1 4-H PARTYLINE Volume 14, Issue 4 April 2019 Maryland 4-H State Horse Bowl Contest On March 16, 2019, 4-H members traveled to the University of Maryland to compete in the annual Horse Bowl Contest. They competed as a team and individuals. The junior team, ages 8-10, came in sixth place. Madison Glover, senior category, ages 14-18, came in first place in the individual category, which qualifies her to attend the national event. Madison s scramble team of three came in second place missing first place by one point. The team was coached by David Ferguson, Melissa Glover and Caroline Evans. 4-H Horse Jamboree The 2019 Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree will be hosted by Calvert County July 5-7, 2019 at Patuxent River 4-H Center in Upper Marlboro, MD. Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree is an overnight program designed to give 4-Hers the chance to learn about horses, share their existing horse knowledge, learn new skills, and share ideas with other horse-crazy Maryland 4-Hers and adults. ALL Maryland 4-Hers ages 8-18 who love or want to learn about horses are welcome! You do NOT have to be enrolled in the horse & pony project to come to Jamboree! The focus of 4-H Horse Jamboree is learning and FUN! Highlights of the Jamboree include workshops about equine topics, horsey crafts and games, a campfire hangout, and Ponypalooza! Registration will open early April Maryland State 4-H Horse Skills Clinic On Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Plant Sciences Building 4291 at College Park, MD 4-H Youth and volunteers will have the opportunity to attend a clinic to acquire the skill sets and knowledge about the different aspects of Communications, Hippology, and Horse Judging. Participants will hear talks from Extension and industry professionals with special breakouts for youth and volunteers/coaches. Register for this event via 4-H Online. Together we can grow the next generation of true leaders Public Speaking Contest Public Speaking Event 4-H members, their parents and volunteers met on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Garrett College to participate in the County 4-H Public Speaking Contest. Presentations by the youth, ages 8 to 16, were provided in four categories : Prepared, Extemporaneous, Interpretation, and Radio Spot. New this year was a Clover Division, ages 5 to 7 for Show and Tell. Participants received the following awards: Prepared Speech Junior: Peyton Edwards-Champion, Olivia Hayhurst-Reserve Champion, Kane Edwards 3rd, Lillian Brenneman and Lindsay Miller-participation Intermediate: Harley Hayhurst-Champion, Lauren Friend-Reserve Champion, Izzy Hauser-3rd, Nathan Brenneman and Morgan Qualls-participation Senior: Lilah Schmidt-Champion, Lacey Miller-Reserve Champion Extemporaneous Junior: Brady Garlitz-Champion Intermediate: Krista Rinker-Champion, Tanner Garlitz-Reserve Champion, Mason Qualls-3rd Senior: Piper Wilt-Champion, Serena Lewis-Reserve Champion, Mariah Klotz-3rd Radio Spot Junior: Wyatt Fridley-Champion Intermediate: Mason Qualls-Champion, Morgan Qualls-Reserve Champion, Krista Rinker-3rd, Lauren Friend-Participation Senior: Erika Ritchey-Champion Interpretation Mariah Klotz-Champion Clover Participants: Brenton Gnegy, Molly Hayhurst, Raelynn Smitt-Pritt All 4-H members named as champions are eligible to participate in the State Public Speaking contest that will be held on April 27th at the University of Maryland in College Park. 3 Robotics Open House Plan to stop by GEARS on Sunday, April 14th from 3-5 pm for open house at the Garrett Engineering and Robotics Society Center in Accident, Maryland. You will get to battle your friends with the SuGObots, challenge your buddies to a RoboRace, and get to see all the 4-H and FIRST robotic platforms. Refreshments will be served. Come to experience the fun and excitement and support your 4-H teams. Spring Into 4-H Workshop 4-H Camp Algawa 4-H Opportunities! 4-H Camp Algawa The information and registration forms for Camp Algawa 2019 are included in this newsletter. 4-H Camp fills up quickly so you are encouraged to get your registration form in as soon as possible. Garrett/Allegany/Washington 4-H Camp Algawa will be held July 7, 2019 to July 11, 2019 at the Maryland 4-H Environmental Education Camping Center near Bittinger on Rt Maryland 4-H Robotics Challenge One of the fastest growing areas of 4-H across the country is robotics. 4-H members in Maryland have the opportunity to participate in robotics through the Maryland 4-H Robotics Challenge. The challenge has two contests: the LEGO Robotics Challenge and the Robotics Engineering Challenge. The theme for this year s LEGO Robotics Challenge is Be the Change, 4-H members involved in the LEGO Challenge will create LEGO robots that will complete seven different missions on a 4 X4 board. Participants in the Robotics Engineering Challenge will build robots to play on a 12 X 12 playing field. These two challenges are patterned after FIRST s First Lego League (FLL) and First Tech Challenge (FTC) robotic games. The 4-H Robotic Challenges are an excellent way to get youth involved with 4-H. Garrett County is organizing local teams if you are interested in joining a team contact the extension office at An optional statewide workshop will be held later in the spring. Garrett County Fair Sets Farm Queen Program The Garrett County Fair Board of Directors has set the following deadlines for the 2019 Farm Queen and Princess Program: Princess Applications Due ~ June 8, 2019 Princess Interviews Due ~ June 22, 2019 Farm Queen Applications Due ~ July 12, 2019 Dinner & Rehearsal (attendance mandatory) ~ July 15, 6:30 p.m. at the Garrett County Fairgrounds Ag Heritage Hall Visit for more information and new revisions Join us for an afternoon of fun making your own fairy garden to take home. 5 Western Maryland District Show The Western Maryland 4-H/FFA District Show is one of the four regional Spring Livestock Shows for Maryland 4-H and FFA members. Although this show is judged, it is designed as a learning experience. District Show is scheduled for May 11, 2019 at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. Entry deadline is May 3, 2019, via 4-H Online. If you should need assistance with registering, contact the UME office. Spring Weigh-In The weigh-in for all market sheep, swine, and goats will be held on May 10 th and May 11 th. Animals will be tagged and weighed. All market swine and cattle are required to have a USDA Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag. If you have questions about the RFID tags, please call MDA at (410) MDA Health Forms, also known as Certificate of Veterinarian Inspection (CVI) forms are required for all exhibited animals. Contact your veterinarian to make arrangements for getting health forms completed for all animals that will be weighed in or shown at the District Show. The Extension Office will no longer be coordinating veterinarian visits. There will no longer be a veterinarian doing health checks at weigh-in, you must contact your vet 4 weeks ahead to complete health checks and health papers. Weigh-in weights will be the beginning weight that will be used in the rate of gain calculations. All Garrett County youth participating in the Western Maryland District Show must weigh their animals on Friday evening. Packets were mailed to members with market livestock projects. If you are planning on showing a commercial heifer, lamb, or goat, please contact the office to get a commercial animal registration card. Please contact the UME office if you should need a packet. Livestock Entries for State Fair If you are planning to take an animal to the State Fair, you must participate in the May 10 th and May 11 th weigh-in and complete the online state fair entry form. Contact the UME Office at to obtain your State Fair Animal ID card to bring with your animal to weigh-in. The guidelines and the 2019 Online Entry Systems are available at Maryland State 4-H Skillathon Results 4-H Members from Garrett County competed in the Maryland State 4-H Livestock Skillathon at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg, MD on Saturday, March 2, This contest covers the understanding of Animal Sciences related to the beef, sheep, swine and meat goat project areas.
