2 PAGEANT Like the Miss Florida and Miss America Pageants, the Miss Gainesville competition is divided into four phases Interview, Physical Fitness in Swimsuit, Talent and Evening Wear. Each contestant is scored individually from 1-10 in each category, with the high and low scores discarded. INTERVIEW The Interview competition is the first opportunity to meet the panel of five judges. The duration of the interview will be ten minutes. During this time each contestant will be able to converse with the judges about their goals and aspirations as well as express their personal opinions. The judges will be looking for a sharp and tasteful woman that is sure of herself, current events and platform. This portion of the competition counts for 25% of the final score. PHYSICAL FITNESS IN SWIMSUIT The swimsuit competition gives each contestant the opportunity to demonstrate how well they maintain their physical fitness. Each contestant will compete in a one or two piece swimsuit of their choice. The judges will be looking for overall proportion of figure, beauty of face and figure, walk, poise and grace. Physical fitness in swimsuit represents 15% of the final score. TALENT The Talent phase of competition allows each contestant to demonstrate artistic craft. The presentation will not be more than 2 minutes in duration. Some examples of talents performed within the Miss America Pageant System include singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, comic or dramatic reading, baton, acrobatic movements, etc. Contestants are responsible for providing their own music or arrangements. Judges will be looking for interpretive ability, technical skill level, stage presence and integration of elements (costume, choreography, music and props) used in the presentation. Talent represents 35% of the final score. EVENING WEAR The evening wear competition consists of presentation in formal evening attire. Judges will look for sense of confidence, personality, stage presence, walk, poise and elegance. This phase of competition counts for 20% of the final score. ON STAGE QUESTIONS Each contestant is asked two questions, one on current events and one on her platform. The judges will be looking for personality, intelligence, speech, vocabulary and style. This phase of the competition counts for 5% of the final score. PLATFORM ISSUE Each contestant is required to have a platform issue about which she feels strongly. It is best to choose a cause or issue for which the contestant has a strong personal commitment, involvement or conviction (i.e. AIDS, CHILD ABUSE, CARE OF THE ELDERLY, HOMELESS, etc.). This year we are asking each contestant to set a minimum goal that will raise $100 for a Local Pageant, $250 for a State Pageant and $500 for the National Pageant to benefit the Miss America Scholarship Fund and Children's Miracle Network in order to participate. This partnership will create the following opportunities for future contestants and Miss America titleholders: Miss America will act as a goodwill ambassador for Children's Miracle Network throughout her year of service. 6 Things you wish they would have told you BEFORE the pageant! Get Started Early! Register with the Children s Miracle Network. You must raise $100 for this cause in order to be eligible to compete for the title of Miss Gainesville. Log onto: Begin researching your personal platform. Meet with local leaders to learn as much as you can about the nature of your platform and research ways you can help. Find local and/or corporate businesses to purchase advertisements for the Miss Gainesville program book. You can also have relatives, sorority sisters or special friends purchase Good Luck ad pages for you to be included in the program book. The judges will be able to view the program book on pageant day so you ll want as much exposure as you can get! We are asking all contestants to sell at least one page of ads. One lucky contestant will win this year s Program Book Sales Award, receiving a prize and her name announced during the pageant! Watch the news and read the newspaper! Begin a daily exercise regiment and set weekly/monthly goals. Practice! Practice! Practice! Whether it is singing, dancing, walking in high heels, having friends ask you questions, etc, you can never get enough practice time! Pageantry is a sport so you ll want to be sure you have warmed up and practiced before the big game!
