I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Donna and I are very thankful that we got to spend it with all but one of our kids and grand-kids. We went camping in Northern California in the Redwoods and had and opportunity to really connect with our family and nature. I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very very Happy Holiday and a terrific New Year. Our NCoCC Christmas Party will likely have occurred by the time you read this but I have to say I really enjoy our Christmas Party. I love the venue, there is so much military and Hollywood history attached to it. For those of you who don't know, the location we dine in is the same one that Tom Cruise sang "you've lost that lovin feelin" in the movie Top Gun. A special thanks to Wayne and Marilyn for all their hard work in setting up this event. I also want to thank Bob Brown for leading another terrific Christmas Light Caravan and Dinner Cruise. The weather was great, the Christmas lights terrific, the dinner at the Studio Diner was delicious, and of course we cant forget the gifts handed out by the Belzman's along the way. Thank you Bob and Jo. With the end of another calendar year nearing, I look back with mixed memories. We had a lot of great events and a lot of fun, but we lost a long time club member Ron Rune and we had several other members hit by serious medical problems. I am saddened by the loss of Ron and I want our members who have been affected by serious medical problems to know that I believe I speak for the whole club when I say that you are in our hearts and our prayers and we really look forward to seeing you back in your Corvettes cruising down the highway with us. Thanks to all and have a Happy Holiday and a Great New Year Sam Charity Representative Bob Belzman Car Club Council Jack Grindstaff Bob Hurst Jan Houshar Newsletter Editor Jeff Brandon jsbarchitect@yahoo.com submissions by the 20th to be in the next issue.

5 5 ENDLESS SUMMER 2010 A nearly perfect day for our club show this year. Rick Toomey hosted the event and did a great job. Several members attended from North Coast Vettes and Corvette Owners Club of San Diego. Mark Reynolds was around again this year spinning the oldies and making raffle prize announcements. Pattie Knutson handed out freshly made brownies kick off the day while Bob Stall provided lunch with complimentary hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and drinks. COCSD won the club participation award and our own Bob Brown took home the Sponsor s choice award - hmmmm. Terrific job Rick! The North Coast Vettes gang.

7 An Arizona senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down the I-40 fwy, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw an Arizona State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!" and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding, a reason I've never before heard--i'lllet you go." The old gentleman paused then said: "Three years ago, my wife ran off with an Arizona State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back!" "Have a good day, Sir," replied the trooper. Report: GM suing Mongoose Motorsports over Corvette GS replicas Autoblog.com, by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Mar 22nd 2010 at 5:01PM The 1963 Corvette Grand Sport is one rare roadster. General Motors only built five of the Cobra killers before production was halted, and the rarest of 'Vettes are worth millions at auction. If you don't have Ferrari GTO 250 money to spend, one option is to shell out $189,000 to Duntov Motor Co. in Texas. The company reportedly has full rights from GM to build the vehicles, and The General's badge is proudly displayed. But that isn't the only way to get a replica Grand Sport. Mongoose Motorsports produces a near dead ringer of a roadster, but GM claims in a lawsuit that the company is violating trademark laws by building the vehicles without the automaker's permission. The Detroit News says The General is looking for the courts to bar Mongoose from building any more GS replicas, order the destruction of all labels and signs containing Corvette trademarks and let the automaker inspect the Ohio company's books. On top of that, GM is looking for unspecified damages. Mongoose operations manager Gary Krause Jr. reportedly told DetNews that he was unaware of the lawsuit until the newspaper called him. Why is General Motors coming down hard on Mongoose Motorsports? Because there is a lot of money in licensing (ask any pro sports team), and any company seeking to profit from The General's designs, products or representations is taking money out of the company's coffers. But while the Mongoose Motorsports GS may (or may not) be illegal, it still does look pretty damn cool on the road. Hit the jump to watch video of the realistic replica as it trolls public roads in search of some street cred; or perhaps a speeding ticket. Thanks for the tip, Ismael! [Source: The Detroit News]

8 San Diego Veterans Day Parade 2010 Submitted by Bob Brown. At the 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11 th month 2010, Rick Toomey and I participated in the annual San Diego Veterans Day Parade. Ah, this is a good way to start the day; a former Playmate of the Year is parking her custom Mustang convertible next to my 59 The 59 is all decked out and ready to haul some passenger(s) in the parade. The Playmate is still trying to back her car into her assigned space. At least it was fun to watch. Flags stuck everywhere! The Playmate is still trying to back her car into her assigned space. At least it was fun to watch Almost there! Rick has his 2007 Atomic Orange Metallic Tintcoat convertible all prepped and ready to carry one or more dignitaries. Rick is modeling the special Veteran s ballcap given to all participants. The Grand Marshall poses for a photo.

9 San Diego Veterans Day Parade The Knights of Columbus contingent. Not sure what war they fought in, but they sure had snazzy uniforms. My passenger is City Councilman Todd Gloria. We may differ politically on a number of issues, but we both like veterans. His aides went nuts when their expensive magnetic signs wouldn t stick to the fiberglass Corvette ( when did they start making them out of fiberglass? ), but luckily I had some good masking tape in the trunk. What a tremendous crowd! I think this is the largest crowd I have seen in all the years I have been participating in the parade. After completing the parade route on Pacific Highway we looped back around on Harbor Drive to return to the staging area. There was a wonderful tribute on display just astern of the USS MIDWAY (CV 41) Museum. Getting to the staging area both prior to the parade and after was a real hassle and this is the reason why. They had just towed CARNI- VAL SPLENDOR into port after a few days adrift at sea, and the traffic of looky-loos and TV remote trucks was super heavy. It was a beautiful day for a parade. To all our Veterans, and especially to all those who gave their all that we might remain free, HAND SALUTE. Bob Brown

11 Ron & Cathy Lewis 1965 convertible, 1998 coupe Get to know a member submitted by Liz Brown In the words of a song by Frank Sinatra, It was a very good year , that is. Cathy was in her second year of college at the University of Washington. While working a part time job at the Seattle Center, a handsome GI named Ron Lewis stopped by her booth and asked for her phone number. He told his Army buddies that he was taking her home with him on their first date. The rest is history Cathy Lewis was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the oldest of four children. Her family moved to Seattle in 1962, the year of the Seattle World s Fair Exposition. She completed middle school, high school and 2 years of college when she met and married Ron Lewis in October of Ron Lewis was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his family moved to California when he was 5 years old. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley, Van Nuys, to be exact, and often says his life was like that portrayed in the movie American Graffiti. He would cruise Bob s Big Boy on Van Nuys Boulevard on Friday nights in his 1955 Chevy. He and most of his friends were really into cars even then and he always dreamed of owning a Corvette. Ron entered as a reservist in the National Guard while in college and it was from there that his unit was activated to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he met Cathy on that fateful day in They dated for about a year and when Ron was discharged from the service, they were married and then settled in California. They started their family, Cathy was a stay-at-home Mom, and after moving to Escondido in 1976, were kept busy with work, school and sports and their three kids. A Corvette would not be in their plans until quite a while later. Ron always wanted to own his own business and in 1986, they purchased a 7-Eleven Convenience Store in Rancho Penasquitos. They worked together in the store for about four years when Cathy decided to work away from the store and took a teaching aide position in Escondido. Ten years went by and in 1996, a 1972 Pewter Silver Corvette became part of the family and they joined the North County Corvette Club. Then three years later, the 1998 Torch red coupe. They also purchased a 1955 Chevy Bel Air 2 door hardtop and a 1957 Chevy pick-up. The stable was getting full. Ron continued to work in the store and for another twelve years and then sold it to buy a Minuteman Press franchise with their oldest son, Randy. Cathy found a new career in the stock brokerage business and continues to work in that industry. Ron is now semi-retired as their son, Randy, owns and runs Minuteman Press. In 2006, they purchased a 1965 Nassau blue convertible after selling the 1972 coupe and the 1957 truck. They were part of the 50 th Anniversary Caravan to Bowling Green in 2003 and also the caravan to celebrate the 15 th Anniversary of the NCM in These were two of the best vacations they ve ever had. There s nothing like a road trip in a Corvette! They have three grandchildren and recently purchased their retirement home in Hidden Meadows. They have forged special friendships in the club and will continue being a part of what makes the club great. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Or, if you side with the commies, Nepal and China. The Sherpas who help many climbers summit Mt. Everest frequently have Sherpa as their last name. That s because many of them come from a local tribe of people known as yup Sherpas. That tribe even has their own language called you guessed it Sherpa.
