September is here already. We have had a great summer in the San Diego region. Thanks to many of you we have also had some fun outings and activities. The Past President's Picnic was a huge success in August. We had a great turnout, perfect location, good weather and plenty of food and friendly conversation for everyone. Also in August, our club made a proud showing at the Mainstreet America Car Show. Besides our club receiving the highest participation trophy, winner trophies were also collected by the Knutsons, Browns and Tenneys. The turnout by our club, in support of COCSD is what our clubs are about. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate and congratulations to the trophy winners. Coming up on September 18th is a golf tournament sponsored by North Coast Corvettes. We will be fielding a foursome in the tournament. Also in September, Speedweek Coronado will be on the 27th. Make sure you plan for this one if you enjoy the sound of open exhausts, pit crews and vintage racing. Bring your payment for tickets to the meeting on Tuesday, September 8th. Look for more exciting events scheduled in the upcoming months. Check the website often, and listen for new news from Terry and Greg at the meetings. The board has been busy discussing more events and plans that encourage attendance and camaraderie with our members. Next week's meeting will feature submarine sandwiches and beverage. Be sure to come early to enjoy the food and visit with friends. We will be rolling out a plan to help with additional ideas and food meetings for the coming months. On Friday, August 28th, seven members from our club left on the National Corvette Museum caravan. We wish them well, fun and an exciting trip to Bowling Green. With some encouragement, we may get some progress reports from the group. Bon Voyage! That should cover it for this month. Keep those ideas coming in for group activities. One last plea, we need someone or co-persons to step up and take on Plastic Fantastic This is an opportunity to get involved with our major event of the year and get a feeling of accomplishment. Please consider this and contact any board member or me. Take care, Bob Car Club Council Jack Grindstaff Bob Hurst Jan Houshar Newsletter Editor Jeff Brandon jsbarchitect@yahoo.com

6 6 The 12th annual Coronado Speed Fest took place at North Island Naval Air Station on September 26-27, The festival is held as a part of Fleet Week San Diego, and is their marquee event. More than two-hundred antique and vintage race cars competed in the races with the addition of race cars from NASCAR. As always, the pits were open to the public to check out the cars. The freestyle drift circuit car exhibition was big fun as well, if you could handle the tire smoke! This is the only Navy Open House on the West Coast. Attendees were given the chance to climb aboard and tour an active Navy ship berthed at NASNI, visit command displays, watch F-18 flyovers and see military vehicles in action. Attendance for both days was more 22,000.

13 National Corvette Museum's 15th Anniversary a Success Event attendance topped 24,000 over five days. Submitted by Bob Hurst Bowling Green, KY - Labor Day weekend 2009 saw one of the world's largest moving automotive events take place as Corvettes from all over the country participated in Caravan 09. As part of the 15th Anniversary and Grand Reopening of the National Corvette Museum, over 4,500 Corvettes came from all over the United States, Canada, Netherlands, the UK and Australia, got together in major cities as they grew in numbers and then converged on Bowling Green Kentucky. As the "Gateway to All Things Corvette" the National Corvette Museum held a ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming Corvette enthusiasts to the newly expanded 115,000 sq. ft. facility, and hosted a five-day event that included a special exhibit of rare Corvettes, seminars with Corvette designers, engineers and experts, GM Assembly Plant tours, road trips, drag racing, autocross and a surprise appearance by the Stingray Corvette concept car that played the role of "Sideswipe" in the Paramount film Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Attendance over the five-day event exceeded 24,000, as visitors toured the new facility including the exhibit hall, library and archives, Corvette café and interactive exhibits. Three 2010 Corvettes and $15,000 in cash were raffled off and several cash drawings were held for those who preregistered for the event. The annual membership meeting was held yielding great ideas and feedback for the Museum team, a special reception recognizing Lifetime Members took place after hours at the Museum and four Corvette elite were inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame at the annual dinner. News and developments of the planned NCM Motorsports Park were shared, and more details can be found on the new website at < Museum Executive Director Wendell Strode commented afterward, "The tremendous success of this event says a lot about the love people have for - America's sports car, and for fellow car enthusiasts." The Museum welcomed 1,875 new members to the Corvette family during the event. Fast Facts: - 25 Broad Range Caravans, some made up of 2-3 smaller caravans, largest composed of over 900 Corvettes - Over 4,500 Corvettes in attendance - 5,290 people were registered for the event - Overall event attendance topped 24,000-1,875 enthusiasts became new members of the Museum 13 Z06 Shefiff s cruiser Associated Press

Langhoff CPO, USN (Retired) 2009 San Diego Veterans Day Parade Committee Vehicle Coordination Subcommittee Chairman Media/Public Contact Assistant Cellular: (619) Greetings to All! I must apologize for getting such a late start at organizing my little part of our grand Parade this year! For those of you that don't already know, I work for the Veterans of Foreign Wars as a Veterans Service Officer, assisting Veterans and their Survivors in obtaining benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies, and given the current state of our economy, we have been very busy over the past year, which has taken an at times exhaustive toll on me, given my own disabilities. Nevertheless, I digress! The 23rd Annual San Diego Veterans Day Parade will take place on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 11:00 A.M., on Pacific Coast Highway from Cedar Street to Harbor Drive! The Parade promises to be even bigger and better this year, and we have taken steps to better organize and execute the event. This year's theme welcomes home our Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom Veterans and Warriors, and our Grand Marshal this year is none other than Gunnery Sergeant Nick Popaditch, USMC (Retired) who received the Silver Star for Valor in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004! Please pass along this along to your fellow automobile enthusiasts, and encourage them to volunteer to help transport one of our many Dignitaries in our Parade! Several of you have already contacted the Parade either via our website or via , and I will be getting back to you shortly to confirm your participation. Don't hesitate to call or write me if you have any questions! Respectfully, Scott H. Langhoff Fun Question (answer on page 13) From: How Dumb Are You, by Adam Winer What is a prime number? A)???
15 Grand Sport packs some Z06 performance into base Chevrolet Corvette By Natalie Neff, August 21, 2009 Take an everyday Corvette, beef up its bod with wider fenders front and rear, throw on a cool-looking functional front splitter and rear spoiler, dress up the corners with unique wheels (we particularly like them in Competition Gray), then add some zing with a pair of stylized fender vents and you're halfway to Chevy's latest offering, the Corvette Grand Sport. 15 Slotted between the base model and the Z06, the Grand Sport is essentially an LS3-powered Z06 Light, if you will, using some of the mechanicals of the zoomier car to give folks seeking the ease of an entry-level Corvette with an extra dose of performance and visual appeal. To that end, perhaps the most compelling reason a shopper might opt for the Grand Sport over the Z06: the option of an automatic transmission, unavailable in the hotter Vette. Chevy says up to 70 percent of Corvette buyers opt for automatic-equipped cars. The Z06 does donate a goodly number of mechanical bits to the Grand Sport, including its 275/35ZR-18 front and 325/30ZR-19 rear Goodyear Eagle F1s. Peek between the five-spokes and you'll see the Z06's brakes tucked in behind, 14.0-inch vented and crossdrilled rotors clamped by six-piston calipers in front, with similar 13.4-inch rears held by four-piston calipers. But the coolest carryover feature? Grand Sports equipped with the standard six-speed manual get the same dry-sump oil system used on the Z06's LS7 and the ZR1's LS9 V8 engines, giving the car's track cred a serious boost. Seeing as Chevy says the Grand Sport is capable of hitting more than 1.0 g of lateral acceleration, the system ensures that the motor will never be starved of oil, even on the most challenging road courses. The Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport can be had as a coupe or convertible Corvette Grand Sport All of those Z06 goodies do add a bit to the price tag. Grand Sports are on their way to dealer showrooms now. Look for stickers to carry a roughly $5,000 premium over standard Vettes, with prices starting at $55,720. Donna Mae Mims BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. - Donna Mae Mims, the first woman to win a Sports Car Club of America national championship in 1963, has died. She was 82. Mims died Tuesday of complications following a stroke, said Aaron Beinhauer, director of Beinhauer Family Services, which is handling the arrangements. Per her wishes, Mims' body was seated behind the steering wheel of a 1979 pink Corvette for visitation hours at the funeral home in McMurray, Pa., Beinhauer said Sunday. Known as the "Pink Lady" because of her preferred color for cars, Mims worked for Yenko Chevrolet and the company's sports car division and started racing in 1958, according to Beinhauer Family Services. Mims' association with the car company led her to race cars, including the Camaro, Austin Healey, MG, Corvette and Corvairs. Mims participated in the original Cannonball Run, where her 1968 Cadillac limousine was wrecked with her teammate behind the wheel. She also became known as "Think Pink," "Donna Amazing" and "Free Maui." "On the back of most of my cars I had 'THINK PINK,'" Mims, of Bridgeville, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette earlier this year. "I liked pink ever since I was a little girl."
16 16 Chevrolet Corvette the only authenticated' return under GM's 60-day guarantee, Lutz says By GREG MIGLIORE, October 14, 2009 Autoweek.com One car has been returned under General Motors' unconventional 60-day return policy--a Chevrolet Corvette. The reason? A customer grew tired of shifting with the manual gearbox, GM vice chairman Bob Lutz said on Wednesday. The Vette was exchanged for one equipped with an automatic transmission. Recounting the story for journalists at a luncheon event in Detroit, Lutz said it's the only authenticated incident of a car being returned under GM's new program, which offers the challenge, May the Best Car Win. Lutz said: He brought it back because he made a mistake. The risky, money-back guarantee is part of the company's goal to be more aggressive in taking its message to consumers. Lutz pointed to an advertisement that shows Chevrolets registering better fuel-economy figures than counterparts from Toyota. We can stand the comparison with just about anybody, Lutz said. [But] we need to close this perceptual gap. The GM vice chairman, who switched from product boss to the company's honcho for marketing, advertising, and communications, said the message is resonating with consumers. He says consideration for GM vehicles is up 15 percent and says its market share in September, 20.5 percent, is the same as last year.
