Southwest Challenge in March February 2008 MAKE SURE WE HAVE YOUR ADDRESS Did you know that we frequently send important s to players regarding tournaments, singles qualifiers, incentives, and much more? The 13th annual 8-Ball Southwest Challenge takes place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on March 27th March 30th. All active Northern Nevada APA members are welcome to participate. The expected purse is $25,000 for this event with expected participation of over 250 teams from the west coast. This will be Northern Nevada s first time participating, and we d love to get you there to show them what you re made of! Teams are made up of 3 people. You can combine any 3 active Northern Nevada APA players you d like, as long as their combined skill level is 14 or less. Only one 6 or 7 per team is allowed. Male 2 s are allowed. The cost for this event is $450 per team a great deal considering this cost includes one hotel room for 3 nights, the entry fee into the tournament, and green fees for the main event. Slots will be allocated on a firstcome, first serve basis. $100 deposit holds your slot. Entry deadline is February 29th. For more information, contact Seth ( ). Our players know how to have a good time and even in competitive matches understand the importance of exemplary sportsmanship. Each week teams rate each other on their score-sheets, using the 5-Star Sportsmanship Program. We d like to recognize and congratulate the following teams for winning the Sportsmanship Award for each of their respective divisions. The players on these teams were each awarded with a Sportsmanship Patch. Participation in the Top Gun Tournaments was better than ever, making the competition the toughest yet! In the Mizerak Division (Sparks, 8-Ball), the Top Gun Champion in the 2-3SL Tier was Elizabeth Nelson (pictured below). The Top Gun Champion in the 4-7SL Tier was Jodie Rubin (pictured below). In the Yellowjacket Division (Reno, 9-Ball), the Top Gun Champion in the 1-4SL Tier was Annie Aranda (pictured below). The Top Gun Champion in the 5-9SL Tier was Kim Benson (pictured below). In the Comstock Division (Carson City, 9-Ball), the Top Gun Champion in the 1-3SL Tier was Yuliana Kurenkova (pictured below). The Top Gun Champion in the 4-9SL Tier was Roger Alther (pictured below). In the Minnesota Fats Division (Reno, 8-Ball), the Top Gun Champion in the 2-4SL Tier was Shane Way (pictured below). Second place winners in each tier won cash and APA merchandise (including t-shirts, hats, pocket markers, and/or keychains). High Point Champions were also recognized in each division. The High Point Champion is the player in each division who earned the most points throughout the season. Team members are: Leonard Bear Cabrera (captain), Richard Temples, Amber Miles, Stan Scrivner, Dean Skelley, Karen Baldwin, and Daniel Baldwin. The team members, who met at Tommy s, are always sure to have a great time. When asked to share some interesting facts about their players, they amusingly stated the following: Richard looks like the Geico man. Amber comes for the Tequila Rose. Bear comes for the beer. Dean doesn t mind playing on Monday nights as long as his Colts aren t on, and Stan is just looking for a friend. What they enjoy most about playing in the APA is the fun, the competitiveness, being dedicated to a team, and getting out and meeting people. Tommy s recently won the Sportsmanship Award for their division. We are greatly appreciative of Tommy s involvement in Northern Nevada APA.

Their players are: Scott Stanley (captain), Ray Matison, Jodie Rubin, Stan Smith, Kelly Paul, David Kerfeld, and Krista Kerfeld. On December 16th, the Mizerak Division played their Divisional Playoffs. First place went to Donley s Sunday Bunch (playing out of Donley s Irish Pub). Second place went to Donley s Pink Sharks (playing out of Donley s Irish Pub). YELLOWJACKET DIVISION: The Yellowjacket Division Champions (Reno, 9-Ball) in fall 2007 were Diamond Billiards (playing out of Diamond Billiards) (see photo to the right). Their players are: Jim Garrett (captain), Jerry Bailey, Ken Chang, Mike Prebeg, Ace Flores, Annie Aranda, Dana Jones, and Kim Benson. On December 19th, the Yellowjacket Division played their Divisional Playoffs. First place went to Isolated Ground (playing out of Donley s Irish Pub). Second place went to Treky s (playing out of Diamond Billiards). MINNESOTA FATS DIVISION: The Minnesota Fats Division Champions (Reno, 8-Ball) in fall 2007 were The Murphs (playing out of Diamond Billiards) (see photo to the right). Their players are: Dorene Murphy (captain), Jack Murphy, Scott Cecil, Bradly Snyder, Shane Way, Patrick Hogan, and Tina Martin. On January 17th, the Minnesota Fats Division played their Divisional Playoffs. First place went to We Got Luckie (playing out of Luckie s). Second place went to Diamond Billiards (playing out of Diamond Billiards). MOSCONI DIVISION: The Mosconi Division Champions (Carson City, 8-Ball) in fall 2007 were The Pickpockets (playing out of Ormsby Club) (see photo to the right). Their players are: David Scheideman, Jessi Post, Michael Pena, Dan Haddix, Mark Fitzsimmons, Desiree Overcast, and Dan Dauber. On January 21st, the Mosconi Division played their Divisional Playoffs. First place went to Doppelgangers (playing out of Doppelgangers). Second place went to Mike s Misfits (playing out of the Ormsby Club). 4 Upcoming Spring Session Tournaments Participation in all tournaments outlined below is limited to active APA players. Players from any Northern Nevada APA division may compete in all tournaments below (as long as they also meet other outlined criteria). 8-Ball Singles Qualifer Saturday, February 16th at noon $15 entry fee. Location: Carson City (exact location TBD). 9-Ball Singles Qualifer Saturday, February 23rd at noon Must have at least 10 9-Ball matches in the past 2 years. Jack & Jill Tournament Saturday, March 1st at noon Winner qualifies for Jack & Jill Championship in Las Vegas (April 30 May 2). Must have at 20 8-Ball scores before April. One male; one female. Combined skill level of 10 maximum. Must be on an active 8-Ball roster for the spring session. 8-Ball Singles Qualifer Saturday, March 15th at noon 8-Ball Singles Qualifer Saturday, April 12th at noon 9-Ball Singles Qualifer Saturday, April 26th at noon Must have at least 10 9-Ball matches in the past 2 years. $15 entry fee. Must be on an active 9-Ball roster for the spring and summer sessions. 8-Ball Doubles Tournament Saturday, May 10th at noon Winner qualifies for 8-Ball Doubles in Las Vegas (August 15 August 17). COM The American Poolplayers Association (APA) was founded by professional poolplayers Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart in 1979 as the National Pool League, which became the American Poolplayers Association in The two realized the popularity of the sport, but knew that, different from other sports, there was no existing recreational league system. Today, the APA is operating in more than 40 states in the United States, as well as Canada and Japan. The APA has grown to more than 250,000 members and boasts more members than all other "national" leagues combined. The League is administered by a network of local Franchise Operators. League play is conducted weekly with both 8-Ball and 9-Ball team formats offered. The APA hosts an 8-Ball and 9-Ball League system. The APA 8-Ball League and the APA 9-Ball League are offered throughout the country and each year teams have the opportunity to advance to the APA National Team Championships. At the national level, the APA guarantees nearly $1.5 million in national tournament prize money.
