He contnued, "everybody s dedcated to educaton and all ther people want to teach." Accordng to Dr. Wrth, Russan teachers are pad the same as doctors and engneers. They have no dscplne problem and each teacher teaches three, forty-fve mnute perods., "The Russans take foregn languages from the sxth grade on and each student takes ten subjects n hgh school," sad Dr. Wrth. Dr. Keth,-retred head of the hstory department and former dean of men at Eastern Kentucky State College, has wrtten Beveral ' books, rangng from a hstory of Kentucky through several small books to an autobography, Last summer, a collecton of some 26 of hs speeches that have been delvered n the past.40 years to audences all over the country and n some foregn lands wre assembled and publshed as a book enttled, "Desgns, Dreams, and Deeds." The autobography begns wth a nostalgc descrpton of lfe on a farm n Arkansas and n the rural schools there, contnues wth the author's hgh-school and. college days n Amerca, then descrbes the remarkably dfferent knd of lfe he led at Exeter College, Oxford Unversty. Travel n Germany and France, professonal baseball, and teachng n Amercan schools and colleges follow each other n page after page of sparklng anecdotes. Charles A. Keltn taught school n a place where the howlng of wolves could be heard every evenng. MoreT than once he had to face an angry character who had drawn revolver or knfe and meant busness. At Oxford he had a near dsaster at crcket practce. In Pars he and three other Amercans mpulsvely formed a quartet and entertaned the starlet French wth "My Old Kentucky Home." At Eastern State College, he was confronted by a half-erased war veteran who roared n, determned to shoot the place up. Dr. Keth, who played wth the old St. Lous Browns along wth other professonal teams, has been called a scnolarly athelete for most of hs lfe. Even after he was deep n hs career as an educator, he got hs bggest recreatonal kcks n playng on the ball damond or on the tenns court. He saw acton n a softball game at Eastern when he was 65, and today he would rather take a whppng than mss one of the baseball games at the college or even a practce sesson. The grand old man of Eastern, DWr. Keth s also a storyteller, lecturer, teacher, hstoran, and Masonc leader. A dormtory for men.has been named n hs honor here. Among some of hs other books are "Gems of Jest," "Jewels ql Verse," "Lmerck," and "Pearls of FGable and Fact," collectons of jokes, stores, truth, and tomfoolery, wth Interestng comments and asdes. These have all been publshed snce hs retrement and have been sold n most of the Amercan states and at least eght foregn countres. Publsher of the autobography s Vantage Press, Inc., of New York. When confronted by ths accusaton, the average response Is one of vehement defense. Feathers become ruffled and mmedate ndgnaton arses at such an nsnuaton. However, the rme has come to stop pattng ourselves on the back and to pause for a moment and consder ourselves n the lght of our actons. The present enrollment at Eastern nears the mark. Last week approxmately 150 of ths number attended the dramatc club's presentaton of a Spansh classc play., A few weeks earler dt the last regular communty concert there were perhaps 100 present, whch consttutes a near average attendance for prevous concerts. Durng the same week the play was presented by the Lttle Theater Club, the weekly move flled Brock Audtorum. On'Thursday the Lousvlle game drew hundreds nto Weaver Health Buldng. The ntent of ths artcle s not to condemn moves nor bad games, whch serve ther purpose and add much to cc'lcge lfe. It s rather to queston where our values. le and the sgnfcance of these standards. A college should be a center of cultural actvty. It should stmulate dscusson, debate, and motvaton of ntellectual thnkng as well as provde cheap entertanment. If We cartnot cultvate an apprecaton of anythng above a sex-flled move, n the not-to-dstant future the prvleges we new possess wll undoubtedly be removed. Perhaps they Wll not be mssed by the "average" students, but how great the loss. It seems a shame to have to menton the lack of manners and courtesy dsplayed by college students, but It has to come to-that. Granted, we aren't n a fnshng school where the boys are expected to behave as Lttle Lord Flaunteroy and the grls as Precse Prsclla, but we are supposed to be adults who extend the thoughtful ncetes to others that make lfe a lttle more pleasant. Certanly, there are a few who try to be polte, only to be rdculed by ther frends. For nstance, a commonly overheard remark whenever a boy Is thoughtful enough to open a door Or pck up somethng for a grl s "Isn't he sweet" or "You tryng to get a medal-" No doubt, the one makng such a remark s tryng to cover hs embarrassment over lack of manners. Often too, grls fal to apprecate such courteses and don't even offer a smple "thank you" or "please." It s no wonder the males don't go out of ther way to be polte. Let's not forget that the mark of a well-bred ndvdual s dsplayed by hs courtesy and manners. rve can do somethng about ths stuaton and as college students we should want to develop nto thoughtful and Consderate ctzens of the busness world we Wll someday face. The tme to start puttng such acton nto beng s now try a smle nstead of a grunt, a thank you nstead of nothng, a please nstead of a "huh", and see f t sn't true that courtesy s contagous. DO YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE FIVE SPECIALS DAILY? FRBE WLIVEfcY! 4 UH mk LEISURE TIME. By Charle Klonne The man queston on any campus s what to do wth our spare tme. However, when the ar begns to warm, one of our frst desres s to get out In the sttn and partcpate n -some sprng sport. The boy's problem s salved to a great deal by the offerng.of baseball, track, tenns or some other Intramural sport. But'what of the grls, what can they do? Dr. Tnder descrbed modern man as completely successful n attanng advanced techologcal development, but fllng far short n the development of hs ethcal standards. Dr. Tnder stated that any sprtual and moral foundaton must take nto account three vtal aspects of successful lvng. These consst of a coordnaton purpose that takes nto consderaton God's purpose for the worl, an empathc atttude toward other people, and She ablty to reaqt to experences n a postce manner. These are the grls who wll set future fashon trends. About half of the grls who attend church wear hats of ther own accord, smply because they want to wear them and feel dressed up In hats. They feel that a dressy outft sn't complete wthout one. Many relgons teach that a woman's wearng a hat n church shows reverence. Most grls, however, grpe about havng to wear hats, partly because they feel' uncomfortable n them, and partly because of a rebellon aganst havng pressure appled to make them do somethng. Although t s possble to buy a hat for less than two dollars, many grls don't Tave even one. The way a student spends her money s, of course, her busness, but a hat should be part of any college grl's wardrobe. In a sense, the reacton of the student n nterpretng a fgure of authorty runs parallel to the progresson of the prmtve mnd n nterpretng dety as t s presented n Brownng's "Calban Upon Setebos," a progresson from the concepton of a dety embodyng the creature's own base nstncts, to the concepton of an nfnte sprtual power, "The Great Quet." Sometmes,'- also, the teacher's own mage of hmself wll be evdent n hs performance. I have known teachers who thought of themselves prmarly as entertaners such teachers plan everythng, ther entrances, ether regal or casual, ther slghtly rsque jokes, loosely dropped, lke soled pearls, ther fnal exts and farewells. I have known,, teachers who rehearsed ther gestures and facal expressons before ther mrrors at nght. It s obvous, also, that many teachers dress for the part they have decded to play. Any campus wll yeld examples of those who have decded to present themselves to the- student body n the humble guse of a charwoman; there s also an occasonal female teacher who chooses to hde her ntellectualty under the aspect t>f a bedzened chorne, wth a certan grotesque flrtatousness to match. On the male sde, obvous types are the Savle Row, a perfecton talored fashon plate who waxes hs moustache and thnks of educaton as exclusvely for.gentlemen. (Eastern s not represented by ths type.) Then there s-the Old Wrangler, a modfed fronter varety who s lable to wear strng tes and babble about school tradtons such as hawg rfles, etc. Other types sometmes nature ads n the castng of these parts are the lovable Tlotard, the unworldly phlosopher (Some of ths varety cosf metcally treat ther wearng apparel, wth studed art, from ther prvate collectons of egg-stans, mlk-blotches, ketsup smears, etc.), the undergraduate at heart t s consdered overactng, for ths part, however, to wear one's college athletc sweater wth the gant P or U. There s. undenably, somethng * the stuaton of the teacher that leads'hm, f he s not careful, to Walter Mtty-lke fantases. If he s of ar'elgous turn of mnd he can thnk of hmself as a pelcan, that medeval symbol for the church whch fed ts young by gvng blood-from ts own breast. If the feedng mage stll perssts, he may pcture hmself as some obese, good-natured Aunt Jemma strrng a large vat of ntellectual vttles, cluckng wth a hgh, Hatte Mc- Dancl-lke whnny as the youngsters, eager for learnng, clutch at skrts, occasonally dealng an, overeager brat a. frendly smash across the mouth wth the heavy wooden mplement. Sometmes- especally f one s employed by-a fashonable-prvate school whoh treats ts teachers as old famly retaners ths fantasy s lkely to. occur: one may see hmself as one of the early Roman slave-pedants who, scratchout complex geometrcal problems wth a stck on the ground, perhaps wns hs freedom, toward the end of the fantasy by gettng young Galba.to learn Eucld. "Come, Galba," we can hear ourselves sayng n ths fantasy, "eat your Latn. It's good, nutrtous Latn, wth plenty of Oxymorons ('Not a football player; not a fgure of rdcule but a fgure of speech) and synedoches.", Publc mage and prvate fantasy often merge n the typcal move presentaton of the teacher as a dowdy, mpractcal, tenderhearted nnnv. We see ths bascally as a Paul Mun-type role. The move verson mght focus n on hs ludcrously clumsy attempts to repar, hs son's electrc tran. Hs efforts are not aded by the fact that one eyeglass has been patched wth Scotch tape, whle the other rests eccentrcally on hs left ear. A guest drops n, a well-heeled busnessman, Sam, who looks on the teacher as a lovably erratc chld. "Sam!" the Mun-type shreks, "I've "just dscovered that the perostts of the perneum parallels the blah blah blah blah pergee of the perhelon!" "Poose, Poose," the obvously more ratonal tycoon croons." the same old Poopse, stll tryng to reform the unverse. Too bad the unverse never lstens. It mght learn somethng." The camera slowly retreats from the soft mage of Sam's ndulgent smle, gazng fondly at Poopse's ragged costume, the same one Mun used when portrayng Emle Zola on Devl's Island. The audence s left wth the dstnct mpresson that not only s Professor Poopse a mountebank of.no value to the world (and by mplcaton all abstract ntellectual actvty s fool's play) but that he s kept out of prson or the Happy House only by the humantaran nstncts of hs frend. la ts portrayal of the teacher, a representatve of the ntellectual man, as a lkeable but eccentrc dreamer, a socety shows ts contempt for the ntellectual approach, ts lack of understandng of t, and ts gult over ths atttude. The publc lkes to thnk.of ts ntellectuals as ragged paupers, and dogs ts best to ensure, the actualzaton of ths mage by payng Its teachers wretchedly. The real ntellectual vgor of Amercan socety can certanly be judged by ts atttude towards ts men of learnng, n comparson to the atttude of many TSuropean socetes, where the professor s a fgure of respect comparable to doctors or lawyers n our socety. At the same tme, attempts to better the lot of the teacher, and to gve the publc a more mpressve mage of the teacher, run aganst the embarrassng truth of the statement of Admral Rckover, that most teachers, although pad lttle, are not worth even the small amount they are pad. The Educatonsts, whle shyng away from "Subject Matter" as a drty word, have certanly attempted to elevate the techncal profcjency of the teacher, nor can ther efforts be sneered at: there s a great deal of art n the rasng of a wndow shade; blackboard wrtng cannot be learned n a day; crses such as eraser-shortage, snappng chalk, -gum on seat-desks demand experence and tranng to cope, lest the crngng"novate, the rooke teacher, panc and weep on h*, frst day of school." Tpaohng s certanly to some extant a matter -of technque, but bascally t s an art. Furthermore, one has only to look, around hm/ to realze that however wdespread the knowledge of the psychology of teachng may be, the best mnds, are not gong nto teachng. The reason s not prmarly economc, even, though one would expect that trees would burst nto flame and the sea gve up ts dead.on the day when the frst Jerkmoble s gven away as a trbute to,one profcent n teachng. Rather t, les n the. matter frst presented, of. the publc mageof the teacher as anythng from a Jplly Santa Claus.tp a harmless eccentrc, as anythng but what he should bor-a. hghly traned, hghly ntellgent professonal who s delverng a servce of even more mportance than the Extractng of teeth.
