CANADA DAY IN MAY! -Elise Yu Canada Day in May. This is my third year being a part of this school event and I almost forget when Canada Day actually is. (it s July 1 st by the way) This year has been our biggest year yet. We ve always gotten McMillan and Fraser to participate, but this time we had a record number of boothsover 40! That s a lot of games to get around. From burgers, snow cones, dunk tanks, angry birds what didn t we have? That was rhetorical because we had just about everything. For proof, I will compile the following short list of the booths I personally remember: henna, pizza, spin the wheel, candy, ice cream, milkshakes, bubble tea, log toss, wipeout, hay ride, superman, you get the idea. CDIM is a leadership-hosted event, and nobody says no to festival food and carnival booth games. It was also nice that the sun was on our side that day. Can you imagine the hassle of those 40 booths struggling to get indoors if it had rained?! All in all, Canada Day in May has always been, and hopefully always will be, a great success, providing the chance for kids, tweens, and teens to all come together to celebrate. But really, we just go for the food.
THE SATS -Jacqueline Pan The end of high school is traditionally portrayed as a time of celebration and new beginnings. For the first time in over 12 years, senior students can finally relax and enjoy a well-deserved break before university in the fall. Unfortunately, for millions of high school pupils who wish to attend American universities, the approach of summer signals only a time of high anxiety and stressful weekends studying for the SAT. It s a mandatory entrance test for the vast majority of secondary institutions down south. As a 3 hour and 45 minute exam, it is full of tedious math, grammar, and critical reading questions that test knowledge dating back all the way to middle school. It is by far one of the hardest, most dreaded things that the average high school student has to study for, and I wish all test takers good luck!
A LOOK AT THE RIOT FOR FREEDOM -Ariel Ezergailis 1969 was a big year. The Jets beat the Baltimore Colts, Paul McCartney said he was not dead, we had our first successful landing on another planet (Venus), and the Stonewall riots occurred. Except, most people probably haven't heard about that last one. I hadn't even heard about the riots until I sat down to write this article. So in case you don't know - on June 28th, 1969, a series of riots against a police raid took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York. However, the probable reason you haven't heard about these riots is because they were done by the LGBT community. In the 60's, LGBT people faced far more oppression than they do nowadays, often not being allowed into some public locations, and the ones they were allowed into (normally bars) were subject to police raids. So when the Stonewall Inn, an LGBT friendly location, was raided, a group of LGBT activists formed and began protests against their harsh treatment, rioting and protesting for days after. A year after the events, the first Gay Pride March was held, thus marking the day in history. That's why June is known as LGBT pride and history month. It marks the beginning of the gay rights liberation movement, and most importantly, a fight for human rights. But even today, LGBT people are not treated well, and some of the same thinking held in the 60's is found today. So think about that if you, or anyone else, is saying anything anti-lgbt; have you ever had to riot for your basic human rights?
SCHOOL S OUT! -Elise Yu Yes. School will end in a few weeks. For some of us, it s permanent. Maybe you re already figuring out how to decorate your dorm room or have decided to take on the real world right off the bat. For others, we still have some years ahead of us at this place, and the next two months will be the much-needed breather we ve been waiting for since last November. Either way, we all have some plan for the long-awaited summer, so what s yours? Maybe you decided that this summer would be the time to better yourself. Maybe you re taking a summer class or wanted to go on a health kick. Or on the more likely side, maybe not. Maybe this is your last summer with your high school friends and have decided to go all out crazy and party before you all disappear to different corners of the world. Now that s a bit dramatic. Most of us end up at UBC anyways. Maybe your summer will be filled with family outings and uncalled for visits from distant cousins. How are we related again? You ll both be wondering the same thing. Whatever you want your summer to be- 10 km hikes, 2 a.m. parties, awkward gatherings- make the most of it. None of us are in school forever, and we should appreciate the two months we have off to do whatever we want. We don t get that once we get a job in the big leagues. You know, unless your become a teacher.
SOME EXCITING NEWS! This issue marks the final issue of this year for the Yale Paw Print. We will be under new leadership next year and our very own Elise Yu will be the editor! She s looking for some feedback to get the ball rolling next year so grab a piece of paper and a pen and help her out by giving the answers to these 3 questions: 1.What was your favourite column/type of article from this year? 2.What was your least favourite column/type of article from this year? 3.What s something you d change to improve The Paw Print next year? Give your answers to either Elise or to Ms. Wedel in room B133! *A note from the editor* It s been an incredible year for The Paw Print with a whopping seven issues that came out! Not to mention the tremendous gain in recognition and popularity that the paper has had. A huge thank you goes out to the most loyal group of writers an editor could ask for, and of course to our supervisor Ms. Wedel, who we couldn t have done it without. The best of luck to everyone next year, especially Elise, and thank you for a wonderful year everyone!
TASHI RIDER PART 2 -Katie Martens Tashi! Tashi! Come out from hiding! This isn t funny! Angel cried out as she searched frantically for the small child. She couldn t have travelled far, could she? Angel thought to herself as she worried over the lingering thought. She would have to find the child before she got too far away. Angel walked over to where Tashi was known to hide, the sandbox that one of the other kids made for her, but with no luck. Raine came out from the cabin Angel and Tashi shared with a worried look on her face. Starting to walk over and see what luck the sixteen-year-old had, Angel ended up trotting upon the figure of Tashi s most beloved stuffed toy, a griffin who goes by the name of Fledge. Never in a million years would Tashi leave Fledge behind on one of her adventures. The thought came with a sickening blast, Tashi could have been kidnapped or, worse, captured! Angel bent to pick up the discarded creature and clasped it to her chest as she fell to her knees, her head pounding with a force she barely recognized. It was a new power, being unleashed, but full of pain and fear. Raine ran over to Angel, grasping at her arm. Angel! What s wrong? Is that Oh my god! Tashi left Fledge, here, where could she be? Raine could hardly breath through all the worry clogging in her throat. Her voice was tight and small as she held onto Angel. The white haired woman then got up with a firm resolve, fighting back waves of emotion and power, as she started to run for the woods. I think I ve found her. Hurry, Raine! She s in trouble! With that the two women ran as fast as they could, leaving Fledge all alone beside the empty sandbox, golden eyes staring after them. *Moments Earlier* A small child with gleaming hair sat in her make believe kingdom on the sandy shores of Sandbox Land. With her King Fledge at her side, she would defend her land from the evil ants who tried to crawl within it. She moved yet another one of the invaders when suddenly, feet came into view. Looking up she found a smiling little girl watching her. She seemed not much older then herself and soon they struck up a new game. My name is Lillian, what s yours? the girl asked in a melodious voice that drew you in and could keep you captive if she so wished it. My name s Tashi. I m a big girl, six years old! Tashi replied with a smile on her face. She was completely taken in by this new girl. Do you live near here? I ve never seen you here before. Are you new? She questioned with a slightly babyish lisp added to every s sound. The girl laughed drawing Tashi further under her charming spell. Sort of, I ve lived here a long time. Angel wouldn t like me talking to
CONTINUED... you. She doesn t like me or my family. She stated sadly, drawing from Tashi s compassion, she added, I don t have anyone to play with like you do. I have only big kids who would rather play without me. They are my family. Tashi s rainbow, shifting eyes filled with deep compassion and clouded over as she fell further under the spell of Lillian s. I want to be your friend! We could play together everyday! Forever? Everyday? Won t Angel miss you? Tashi shook her head, her eyes burning a bright green now as she fell completely under the spell. Forever! I promise! Lillian started to give up the act of the little kid and said in a somewhat more dangerous voice, though Tashi couldn t hear the undertone shift. Come with me then! I want you to meet my family. They would love for you to stay with us, forever. We can sing and dance and play forever, with nobody to tell us what to do! Tashi got up and followed the girl into the woods, leaving her forgotten kingdom and fallen king. Ants started to come back into the walls of the destroyed castle. The more deceiving and evil enemy had taken the queen. Tashi ran through the woods at a startling pace for a child, as if carried by the wind, her leader running just ahead. Tashi gasped in awe as she finally came to a clearing, filled with people in marvelous clothes, dresses and suits, enough to fill any queen s dreams. She watched as everyone gave her smiles and hugs, falling further into the trap. After being led to a table full of food, sugary and sweet, she glanced above to the face of a tall man. His beard seemed to trail down like a waterfall until it reached his belly. Go ahead and eat, Tashi. After you have had enough you can play and sing and dance. Tashi looked up into his warm, comforting face, but it felt fake to her. It seemed to glimmer before her very eyes. The green glow faded from her eyes as she fell partially out of the spell. Thinking of something to say, Tashi uttered the first thing that came to mind, But where is supper? Don t we eat that first? Then desert? The man seemed shocked, then quickly covered it up with a smooth lie. This is supper, dear. We eat sugary things that Angel never would have let you. We don t care for stupid veggies and fruit. All we like is chocolate and candy. Tashi s eyes grew less green, showing more and more clearly what was going on. She saw a flash of something bonelike and evil beneath the thin veil of a kind old man. Tears sprang to her eyes as she sobbed out, I don t like chocolate or candy! The veil was torn as the spell vanished. Read next month s issue of The Paw Print to see what happens in part 3!
Dear Ask Ali: How do I write a newspaper article? ASK ALI -Emily Higgins To write an article, you start by introducing the topic, so that the reader knows what the column is about. Once you have the idea down, all you need to do is try and flesh it out so that there are lots of words, but not a lot is actually being said. Try repeating what you ve already written, but in different ways, so that you aren t really giving any new information, but you re rephrasing what you have already said. Also, try and throw in a few random facts relating to the article s topic; did you know, for example, that the bar codes of all newspapers and magazines anywhere in the world begin with the digits 977? Another tip is to try re-wording sentences that you have jotted down beforehand, to remind the reader of your topic and to make it seem like you have a longer article, without adding any additional information. When you get to the end of your newspaper article, try to wrap everything up, and give the reader something to think about. Does that answer your question? Have a question that needs answering or a problem you need help with? it to yalepawprint@gmail.com and it could be answered in the first issue next year! PERSONAL PET PEEVE -Ariel Ezergailis My personal pet peeve is having to try and come up with so many of these personal pet peeves.
