EVA EXHAUST SYSTEMS The Newsletter of the East Valley Aviators February 2008 President Mickey Ohland (480) ; Vice President Mike Wyman ( ; Secretary Harold Ansell (480) ; Treasurer Verlin Boeder (602) ; Safety Officers/Board Members - Bill Cummings (480) , Bruce Van Dyke (480) ; Newsletter Editor Leon Spielbusch (480) ; Training Coordinator Doug Sharpe (480) On January 19-20, 2008 the International Miniature Aerobatics Club (IMAC) southwest season got underway with a bang. Our club hosted the Southwest Region s first AMA sanctioned IMAC points contest of the 2008 season. The contest featured fifty-four (54) pilots competing in the Basic, Sportsman, Intermediate, Advanced, and Unlimited classes. Along with the locals, pilots came from as far away as Texas, California, Nevada and New Mexico to participate in the contest. Our facilities were second to none and the weather, except for the early morning chill, was perfect. Not only did the pilots take advantage of the weather, but many spectators, including EVA members, attended the weekend event marveling at the precision and skill demonstrated by the pilots. The event was a total success and the participants were very complimentary about the event and our club. The following are a few quotes received from some of the participants: The EVA club led by Michael Wyman and Bernie Boland did an outstanding job in their first full IMAC event. 54 pilots, near perfect weather and sky and lots of preparation by the above made this event a premiere event to look forward to next year. Tim Attaway, Associate Regional Director of IMAC for Southern California, AVP for AMA District 10. We sure had a blast at your contest...perfect weather!!! Shawn Best, Lubbock, Texas. Kudos to the EVA club, one of the best contest, I've had the pleasure of flying. Howard Pilcher, Wildomar, California. Big Thanks to Mike Wyman, Bernie Boland, and all the other guys from EVA. The contest was run to perfection, a real treat considering the large field and short days! Thanks for all the hard work, looking forward to next year already. Daniel Rathbun, Midland, Texas. February 2008 Membership Meeting Valle del Oro RV Resort Wednesday, February 13th 7:00 pm Located at 1452 S. Ellsworth, Mesa Directions are: Go east on Highway 60. Exit at Ellsworth. Valle del Oro RV Resort is just north of the Freeway on the left. Tell the guard at the gate that you are here for the RC Club meeting and they will direct you to the meeting room. You can t miss it.
- 2 - Well, the first contest in the Southwest Region is in the books. This was a big contest, and would have been a challenge for any club to pull off, but the EVA club did a great job. I want to congratulate the EVA club membership, Mike Wyman the CD, and all those who pitched in on a great, smooth running event. The advance information posted on this thread by Bernie was very helpful, registration was well prepared and went smoothly, the flight lines moved nicely all weekend, and the awards were very nice. The field at EVA is really a wonderful facility, very well maintained, and in a beautiful location. Steven Dente, La Jolla, California. Mike Wyman, our Vice-President, was the Contest Director, coordinating the activities before, during and after the event. Boy Scout Troop 301 did an outstanding job providing early morning snacks, refreshments and lunches for the contest. The success of any contest is greatly dependent on its volunteers and sponsors, and this contest was no different. Special thanks to the volunteers, which there are too many to name, who were eager to help out and ensure that this contest was a success. Your dedication and countless hours of support were invaluable. Several companies donated merchandise for the contest. I would like to thank the following companies for their generous support and contributions that helped to make this contest one of the premier contests in the southwest: Smart Fly Viper Hobbies D & D Hobbies Black Bear Diner Desert Aircraft AeroWorks Bill Hempel Totally German I would also like to congratulate all of the participants in this years contest. Below are the top three finishers in each class at this year s 2008 Superstition Challenge: BASIC 1. Todd Wheeler Bryan Sennette (EVA Member) 3. Steven Gladstone (EVA Member) SPORTSMAN 1. Rusty Fried Lance Sennette (EVA Member) 3. Kirt Campbell INTERMIDIATE 1. Nick Radle Curtiss Piltcher Dan Jacobsen ADVANCED 1. Ryan Archer (EVA Member) 2. Bernie Boland (EVA Member) 3. Pedro Brantuas UNLIMITED 1. Bill Hempel Eric Powell Daniel Rathbun To view pictures of the contest, please visit our web site: Mickey President s Podium Submitted by Mickey Ohland WOW!!!! 2008 has definitely started out great for our club. With the First Annual New Years Day Club Fly and Lunch followed by our club hosting what has turned out to be one of the premier IMAC contest in the southwest, the 2008 Superstition Challenge. The success of both of these events was dependent on you, the members of EVA. I was happy to see that a large number of our members came out to
The day Joe learned not to yell PULL UP! when Al was doing a low inverted pass can only assume that the majority of the members are happy with the club s facilities and how the club is being run. I hope this assumption is correct. I would also like for you to know that several safety violations, issues, and concerns have been brought to my attention. It is VERY important that each and every one of us follow the rules of our club as well as those of the AMA. Failure to do so could cause the loss of our field, or worse, somebody getting hurt. Because safety is so important, the program for the February meeting will be an open membership forum to discuss the rules that govern our club and field. We ALL need to be clear on what is expected of us as a member of this club. volunteer or simply watch the contest. I thank you for your support of our club and events like these. Not only did the IMAC contest allow us to showcase our facilities and membership on a regional scale, I m very happy to report that the contest made over $1,000 for the club, money that can be used for the field and/or other club activities. Next month, activities at the field will continue. On Saturday, March 1st, we will be having our Spring Club Fly and Swap Meet. Like the New Years Day Club Fly, this event will be a low-key noncompetitive fly-in focusing on having fun. Additional details regarding this event to come. Lastly, there seems like there has been a lot of rainy days recently. That s good because we need the water, but bad since we can t fly. On days when it rains heavily and the road into the field or the runway is too muddy, one of the Club s officers will put the rain lock on the main gate. This is to prevent the field from being torn up by traffic, costing the club money for repairs. For the latest updates about field availability check the club s web site; John Fail has been very good about posting morning and afternoon updates on the field conditions. Remember, if you only have to bend over once to pick up your plane after a landing, it s considered a GOOD landing!!! Mickey On Wednesday, March 5th, the VDO Flyers will sponsor the annual "Flying Fogies Fun Fly" (or the 4F event) at the EVA field from 1:00 to 4:00pm. Again, this is a low-key non-competitive fly-in for EVA and VDO club members. For additional information, please see the event flyer included in the newsletter or contact Russ Peterson. At the December 2007 monthly meeting, I asked for the memberships help by completing a 14-point survey. I hoped that this survey would be a vehicle in gathering input from the EVA membership on what was liked and disliked about the club and its facilities and what members would like to see for the future of the club. As I write this article, I have only received fourteen (14) completed surveys, 6% of the membership. Thank you to those who completed the survey. With the limited response, I
- 4 - Treasurer s Report Submitted by Verlin Boeder The Club effort in planning and operating our first 5-class IMAC contest was a great success in every way. Financially EVA did well also. We had a net profit of $1, after all expenses were paid. Included in contest expenses was $ of hardware items such as a P.A. system and other items we can use next year and in other club events. Membership renewals are excellent this year. As of January 31 st we had 232 members renewed, way above previous year numbers for this date. As a result, our cash balance (with IMAC money) is $2, and our reserve fund is $14, We now have operating money for the summer when income is at its lowest. Those members encouraging new people to apply for membership in EVA, be sure the new person has a current AMA number (green stripe card with 2008). I cannot make a club badge unless I have the AMA number. EVA does not prorate membership dues at any time during the year. It s only $40.00 per year to support the Club. AMA renewal or enrollment can be done quite easily on their website; go to membership services and click on membership renewal. Also by phone: If you pay by credit card a verification form will be sent to you by FAX or . New membership enrollment in EVA is an initial $25.00 fee plus the Individual membership dues of $40.00 or a Family membership of $50.00 per year. Send all new applications to: EVA So. 40 th Street Phoenix, AZ Happy flying and smooth landings, lets all enjoy a great hobby. - Verlin Secretary s Report Submitted by Harold Ansell East Valley Aviators General Membership Meeting Jan. 9, 2008 Board members present: Mickey Ohland- President, Mike Wyman-Vice President, Harold Ansell-Secretary, Verlin Boeder-Treasurer, Leon Spielbusch-Editor. The January general membership meeting was held at Valle Del Oro clubhouse on Jan. 9, There were 54 members and no non-members in attendance. The meeting started at 7:05pm. A motion was made, seconded and carried to accept and not read the minutes of the last meeting. Three new members were introduced. Mickey opened the meeting by thanking Gene Coleman for cooking, John Fail for bring the buns, Fred Johnson for the Chili, and Harold Ansell for the bake beans at the January 1 st first flying of the year. John Fail had the honor of the first flight of the year and Doug Sharpe the first crash of the New Year. Mickey asked for someone to chair an Electric Fun Fly, to be held before the winter visitors return home this spring. Mickey also asked for more of the surveys to be turned in and he would post the results in the near future on the clubs web site and on the bulletin board at the field.
- 5 - Mike Wyman gave a rundown on the clubs IMAC contest coming up Jan. 19 th & 20 th. Mike also asked for help at the contest and for everybody to come out at watch the flying. Mickey reported because of two vacant positions on the board, the board appointed Mike Wyman as vice president and Doug Sharpe as training coordinator for the remainder of the term of one year. Mickey reported that the club would be putting up a canopy for the electric area, and would look into shade for the helicopter area. Verlin reported that as of the end of 2007 we had $13,376 and 295 members and as of Jan.9 of this year we have 215 members that have resigned. A motion that No Smoking on the Carpet signs be posted at the field. The motion was second and the membership vote was 100% for the posting. Mickey introduced Jack Burnside, who is the director of the Electric Flight Expo coming up April 25 th thru the 27 th. Jack gave a complete rundown of the event and asks for helpers for the event and invited everyone to attend the event. Verlin reported that our lease for our field with the state was approved but our area was cut down from 40 acres to 12 acres but the flying air space would remain the same. Verlin also wanted to thank Black Bear Diner for the four free meal tickets that were donated for the raffle tonight. All Raffles were held. Meeting closed at 8:00pm Harold East Valley Aviator s Web Site For up to the minute news about club happenings remember to go to the club web site located at: This web site is your best location for news about field conditions on rainy days, special events, late breaking news and answers to any club or R/C related questions you may have. It s open to all, so check it out! I also frequently post pictures on the site, SMILE!!! Mickey You read nothing but transmitter and model manuals in the bathroom. A full-scale airplane passes overhead and you move your thumbs to match its movements. You accept a crash as an opportunity to start a great new kit. When you go to Home Depot and the PVC pipe and fittings section gives you ideas for new wing racks. You keep your old van just to transport airplanes in. If you spend more money at the local hobby shop in one hour than you make in a month. You have a special room for your airplanes. You have at least three different heating irons. Every time you pass a garage sale, you look for wings. You have a gallon drum of adhesive in your shed. You neck shows a white stripe, that is the same width as your transmitter strap.
- 6 - ONE of the DEADLY SINS of RC FLYING Improperly Located Center of Gravity There's an old saying in this hobby that says "A nose-heavy airplane flies poorly; a tail-heavy airplane flies once." Most beginners fail to appreciate how big a role balance plays in the performance of an airplane. Balance is important in full scale airplanes, but it's even more important in RC aircraft, where an inch or so can make the difference between a model that flies well and one that's unmanageable in the air. Most construction manuals specify where the model's center of gravity (CG) should be located, and a model shouldn't be considered complete until you've ensured that the CG is at or near the recommended location. If necessary, you can add a few ounces of lead to the nose or tail to achieve the recommended CG Often adding lead isn't necessary; you can achieve the desired CG by moving the receiver battery backward or forward. Be certain to check the airplane's CG before flying it for the first time. I usually mark the location of the manufacturer's recommended CG with short pieces of trim tape. That way I can check the CG even if I don't remember precisely where it's supposed to be. Assuming your aircraft's fuel tank is on or in front of the CG, be sure to check the CG with the tank empty. Finally, if your airplane has retracts that fold backward (like the F4U Corsair) check the CG with the wheels in the up position. Deploying the gear prior to landing will move the CG forward, but it's better to be nose-heavy during landing than tail-heavy during flight. by Jim Procise, AMA INSIDER news Dad s home and his airplane is in one piece. Maybe he didn t get a chance to fly! Frequency Control If you are using the main field, electric, helicopter or engine test areas, it is imperative that you claim a frequency pin BEFORE you fly. When you are thru flying return your transmitter to the impound and claim your badge so that the frequency is available to others. REMEMBER Whoever has the frequency pin WINS. If you turn your radio on, either on purpose or accidentally, and cause another plane to crash YOU are responsible.
- 7 - Greetings from Harry Taylor, former EVA Member From: hetaylor@it-outlook.com To: lspielbusch@hotmail.com Subject: Greetings from Harry Taylor, former EVA member Date: Sat, 26 Jan :35: Hi Leon, I don t think you know me, but I was a former member of the EVA, I believe ever since its inception. Anyway, about 4 years ago I decided I would spend my retirement in the Philippines, so this is where I am now. Now that I have a couple of young grandkids, I've made the decision to live in the East Valley area for six months so I can spend more time with my grandkids, then the other six months back in the Philippines. In this respect, I wonder if you could print this in the club newsletter as I would like to get in contact with the club members that live in a Mobile Home Park in the Mesa, or East Valley area. When I go back, I probably will be purchasing a mobile home, but would like to know which parks are best for model airplane enthusiasts like me, specially those that have a hobby and/or model plane building area. My address is hetaylor@itoutlook.com, and also hetaylorjr@yahoo.com. Thanks very much. Hope to hear from you soon. Harry Taylor Dauin, Negros Oriental Island Philippines Items left at field On occasion we all have items left at the field. Radios, starters, batteries, tools, etc. If you find an item(s) that has been left behind and are not sure as to the ownership, please contact Mickey Ohland at It is very important that each of us puts our names on our equipment; a simple return address label usually works. Along with this subject, the AMA requires your name, address, and AMA number be clearly marked on or within your plane. General Membership Meeting Schedule The East Valley Aviators general membership meets six times each year on the first Wednesday of the month. Meetings are held in the months of January, February, March, May, October, and December. An issue of the Exhaust System newsletter will be published on the club s web site the week before each of the meetings. We will publish the location of the meetings in our newsletter. We are always looking for any input from our members, if you have any articles, pictures or classified ad (free to club members) you would like to se published please contact Leon Spielbusch lspielbusch@hotmail.com (480) Please support our local Hobby Shops Adventure Hobbies 1949 W.
