2 Vol. 71 ssue 62 Bowlng Green, Oho Tuesday, January lo, 1989 Local water ntrate level s unhealthy by Scott R. Whtehead cty edtor Due to the hgh level of ntrates n Bowlng Green's water supply, nfants under sx months of age, pregnant women and nursng mothers are at a health rsk f they consume the cty's drnkng water or well water. Ronald Merrll, water supply superntendent for the cty, sad Oho law allows up to ten mllgrams of ntrates per lter (m/l) n the drnkng water. When offcals dentfed the problem on Dec. 30, the level was found to be 11.5 mg/l based on two consecutve water samples. Snce the orgnal testng, Merrll sad the level has rsen to 12.9 mg/l n the drnkng water and 13.8 mg/l n local well water. He added these levels could drop consderably by late ths week f the precptaton level remans low for several days. "We'll be lookng at ths problem for at least the rest of the week and maybe untl next week,' Merrll The prmary health rsk s to nfants, he sad, explanng that the ntrates can nhbt the ablty of the blood to transport oxygen. " suppose t could be fatal but not at the levels we're experencng here," he "n the last 40 or 50 years, thnk 've heard of two fataltes and they were both n the corn states lke owa or Nebraska. But there the ntrate level s around 65 (mg/l) or hgher." Whle Merrll acknowledged that hgh ntrate levels are a recurrng problem for the cty, he sad the stuaton does not usually occur at ths tme of year. "t has the potental to happen every year and the last tme t happened was n June of 1986, but usually the level s around 2 to 3 mllgrams per lter durng the wnter months," he He sad the drought and recent ranfall are contrbutng factors to the ncreased ntrate level. "The ntrates get n the water due to runoff from agrcultural felds, and farmers last summer used more fertlzer than usual to try and save ther crops," he "Combne ths wth the recent heavy ranfall, and there's been a lot of heavy runoff nto our water supply." The cty recommends groups at rsk should drnk bottled water untl the ntrate level drops off to acceptable standards, whch wll be announced. The concern over the cty's drnkng water has created a demand for bottled water at local supermarkets. Accordng to Doug Bortz, manager for Churchll's supermarket, there has been a "tremendous" boost n sales of the water. D See Ntrate, page 4. Engne falure s crash culprt by Robert Ban- Assocated Press Wrter KEGWORTH. England Offcals sad Monday that both engnes on a new Boeng 737 apparently faled, causng the plane to crash besde Brtan's man north-south hghway and kll 46 people. Sabotage was not suspected n the crash Sunday of the Brtsh Mdland Arways jet, the second major ar dsaster n Brtan n less than three weeks, sad Transport Mnster Paul Channon. But Prme Mnster Margaret Thatcher sad no possble cause could be ruled out, ncludng sabotage. One avaton expert called the apparent doubleengne falure a 10 mllonto-1 chance. Eghty passengers and crew members all of the survvors of the crash were njured, ncludng 43-year-ofd plot Kevn Hunt, who was haled as a hero for managng to mss crashng on the vllage of Kegworth or the Ml hghway. The jet, en route from London to Belfast, plowed nto a grassy embankment on the hghway Sunday nght as the plot struggled to make an emergency landng at East Mdlands Arport, about 100 mles north of London. He mssed the runway by about half a mle. "So far the evdence, although by no means conclusve, s consstent wth the rght engne havng stopped before mpact and there are also sgns of fre n the left engne," Channon told BBC-TV. Asked whether both engnes malfunctoned, he repled: "That certanly looks probable at the moment.'' The Boeng , delvered to Brtsh Mdland just 12 weeks ago, had flown less than 500 hours, the arlne Boeng sad the plane had two CFM-56 engnes, bult n France by a consortum of the U.S.-based General Electrc Co. and the French company SNE- CMA. SNECMA spokesman Olver Fagard sad he dd not know whether both engnes faled. "t s extremely mprobable that both engnes would break down n such a short nterval," Fagard sad n Pars. Arena to get seats by Angela Blandna assstant news edtor Addtonal seatng to the north end of the Unversty ce Arena wll allow more fans to cheer the Falcon hockey team. The Board of Trustees allocated $650,000 to add 1,700 seats to the north end of the ce Arena at ther Dec. 16 meetng. The arena's current seatng capacty s about 2,900 wth another 600 to 700 people accommodated n standng-room sectons. The average attendance for regular season games over the last fve years s 3,177, accordng to a report prepared by the athletc department. The success of the hockey program along wth the lmted seatng has resulted n the need to publcze that many, f not most, of the games are sold out, the report stated. Chrs Dalton, vce presdent of plannng and budgetng, sad the addtonal seatng s expected to generate an addtonal $100,000 annually n revenue from hockey games. Trustee Vrgna Platt agreed to the expendture wth the stulaton that the parkng probem at hockey games be nvestgated. Research park gets tenant by Angela Blandna assstant news edtor Md-Amercan Natonal Bank and Trust Co. announced Dec. 21 that t wll be the anchor tenant for the Unversty's 88-acre, $1.9 mllon research/ndustral park. Md-Am had consdered locatons outsde the cty for constructon of ts operatons center but chose the park because of ts proxmty to ts headquarters n downtown Bowlng Green, sad P. Mark Hamman, senor vce-presdent of facltes. "t's closer to where we are and where our personnel lve and t wll be less traumatc lor them not to travel as much," Hamman The center's 95 jobs wll ntally be flled by transfers, Hamman He estmated that an addtonal 30 jobs wll be created n the next fve years. Constructon on the Md-Am facltes s targeted for Aprl 1989 and Hamman sad he hopes to have t fnshed by the end of the year. "'d lke to see t substantally completed by Dec. 31, 1989 so occupancy can begn n January," he Phl Mason, executve assstant to Unversty Presdent Paul Olscamp, sad the Unversty expects about 15 companes to locate n the park, whch s east of 1-75 and north of Wooster Street. Although other companes have expressed nterest n the project, Mason declned to release names untl arrangements are fnal. He sad the Unversty s seekng tenants who wll provde research and work opportuntes for faculty and students. Md-Am's announcement came two days after the State Controllng Board released $250,000 to match the ndustral development grant awarded to the Unversty by the Oho Department of Economc Development. Mason sad no plans to commt Unversty money toward the park have been made. "The proceeds from leases wll be used to feedback nto the park," he Farewell budget readed by Martn Crutsnger Assocated Press Wrter WASHNGTON Presdent Reagan was sendng hs farewell budget to Congress Monday, a $1.15 trllon spendng plan that attacks hs bggest economc falure, the federaldefct, by proposng to elmnate or scale back scores of government programs. The presdent's nnth and fnal spendng plan called for reducng the budget defct to $92.5 bllon n the 1990 fscal year, ts lowest level snce the begnnng of hs presdency. That fgure, and many other detals of the budget, were dsclosed n advance of the formal transmttal of the document to Congress. The budget would reach ts defct goal by termnatng more than 80 ndvdual government programs, slashng spendng on farm subsdes and holdng down the growth n Medcare and Medcad, the gant health programs. The budget provded ncreased spendng for two of the government's most pressng problems, balng out hundreds of nsolvent savngs and loan nsttutons and cleanng up contamnated nuclear weapons plants. ADS research and space exploraton would also receve ncreases. Reagan was presentng hs budget only 11 days before leavng offce, and many of ts broad outlnes were expected to be a- dopted by Presdent-elect Bush, who has sad he wll unvel hs own proposals to a specal jont sesson of Congress soon after takng offce. n two key respects, the two budgets wll be alke. Both men pledged to cut the defct, whch clmbed to $155 bllon n the fscal year whch ended Sept. 30, wthout resortng to new taxes and wthout touchng Socal Securty. Bu Bush s expected to seek a smaller ncrease n defense spendng whle allocatng more money n such areas as chld care, cleanng up the envronment and housng the homeless. Skeptcal Democrats beleve Bush wll fnd t mpossble to fulfll all hs campagn promses for hgher spendng whle relyng on a "flexble freeze" on other government programs to elmnate the budget defct wthout resortng to new taxes. Joseph R. Wrght Jr., drector of the Whte House budget offce, sad Sunday that Reagan's fnal spendng plan was desgned to answer crtcs who clam the defct can't be reduced wthout hgher taxes. "We have proved the crtcs wrong," Wrght sad n an ntervew. "Ths s a great Reagan legacy budget. t encapsulates many of the strong Reagan phlosophcal belefs. t wltprovue a good base for George Bush." Reagan's $92.5 bllon defct target would be well wthn the Gramm-Rudman requrement whch sets a $100 bllon defct goal for The law establshes declnng defct targets leadng to a balanced budget n 1993, holdng out the threat of across-the-board spendng cuts f the targets are not met. The presdent's fnal budget protects hs defense buldup, one of the hallmarks of hs presdency, by proposng a 2 percent ncrease over the expected rate of nflaton. Shoe fts, but no pnch Somewhere on the West Sde of Chcago there s a young man who has to be one of the world's least competent purse snatchers. A few days ago, he selected as hs vctm Mrs. rene Newsome, who was walkng on a heavly traveled man throroughfare n broad daylght. wll gve hm credt for pckng a lkely vctm. Lttle old lades are the best people to snatch purses from and Mrs. Newsome s a genune lttle old lady. She's almost 70, stands four-eleven and weghs about a hundred pounds. Mrs. Newsome. who had car trouble, was walkng toward a servce staton to get help when the purse snatcher jumped out of an alley and grabbed her purse. Then he started runnng back down the alley. But he couldn't run very fast because Mrs. Newsome wouldn't let go of her LETTERS Duo's wshes n 'Edgewse' nspre thought n ther last Edgewse column of Fall semester, the Edwards/Schreffler duo wshed me a holday season "flled wth joy." and "tempered wth a lttle self examnaton." Ther warm wshes were most apprecated, but also compelled me to reflect on the extreme and BLOOM COUNTY purse. "Leggo," he yelled. "You let go, Mrs. Newsome screamed, hangng on wth both hands. Beng a purse snatcher, he couldn" very well let go of a purse, so he just kept gong, draggng the screamng Mrs. Newsome along the ground. After they traveled half a block ths way, Mrs. Newsome lost her grp on the purse, but then she grabbed hm by one of the legs. So they went on that way for several yards, the thef draggng the screamng Mrs. Newsome along by hs leg. Then Mrs. Newsome's grp slpped and she only had hm by the ankle. But he kept gong. And suddenly, she was sttng there holdng one empty shoe n her hand, whle the purse snatcher lmped around a bend n the alley ana dsappeared. Her screams drew some people and they helped her to her feet and out of the alley. "He got my purse," Mrs. self-rghteous ltany (or should say ''gospel") of provocatve and offensve vews that the BG News so convenently allows them to propagate on a regular bass. Prevous letter wrters have humored the par, or taken them to task on specfcs. At the columnsts' nvtaton, my perod of contemplaton led me to consder ther body of work as a "whole." After separatng wheat from chaff, Edwards and Schreffler's pecular blend of retro-mc- Carthysm and curously BGSU "Chrstan" deology, though couched n ther nmtable style, reveals a phobc embrace of the values that brought us the Newsome sad, "but got hs shoe." Snce there was only $10 n her purse, and the shoe was from a par that cost at least that much, Mrs. Newsome had the satsfacton of knowng the thef had not proftted. As they wated for a polce car, a young man came walkng up the street n hs stockng feet, carryng the other shoe. He went rght up to Mrs. Newsome and sad: Gve me my shoe." She sad: "'ll gve you your shoe f you gve me my purse." " ddn't take your purse," the man "f you ddn't take my purse, how dd get your shoe? Mrs. Newsome answered. The young man then proved he was an even worse storyteller than a purse snatcher. He sad he had loaned hs shoes to a needy frend for the day, and the frend returned only one shoe, sayng an old lady had stolen the other one. "Do you expect me to beleve Scopes "Monkey Tral," among other low ponts n Unted States' hstory. t's as though Brother Jed and Morton Downey, Jr. earned doctorates and joned the professorate fear and loathng rght here at BGSU, and at best, an embarrassment to any so-called nsttute of "hgher educaton." The ACLU and certanly grant Edwards and Schreffler the same Frst Amendment rghts as the next person, but consderng the responsbltes anyone has as an educator, the extremsm of these two sparks a concern: to what extent, f any, does ther deology permeate the classroom envronment, wth ts convenently captve audence? by Berke Breathed that?" asked Mrs. Newsome, holdng the shoe behnd her back. The young man started jumpng around angrly, but several men from the neghborhood kept hm away from Mrs. Newsome. And that was when the squad car arrved. Polce looked down the alley and found the purse, wth most of her cards and papers ntact, but the $10 was gone. They started to lead the man toward the squad car. "Do you dentfy hm as the person who took your purse?" they asked Mrs. Newsome. She had to admt she couldn't. "No, never really saw hs face. All saw were hs feet and legs.'' That wasn't enough evdence, the polceman sad, and they even made Mrs. Newsome gve back the shoe. As sad, he was remarkably ncompetent. 12 BGNew January 10, Sports "Lot's Make Mchgan Blu" Bowlng Qr n t««*r«g«nc ANDY WOODARD Commentary Layoff hurts Super Bowl matchup Oho football fans can fnally rejoce. After two years of btter frustraton,.e. The Drve and The Fumble, the Super Bowl has a representatve from the Buckeye state. The Cncnnat Bengals accomplshed Sunday what the Cleveland Browns faled to do the last two years wn the Amercan Football Conference champonshp. The vctory over Buffalo gves the Bengals a Super Bowl rematch wth the San Francsco 49ers, who beat Cncnnat n the 1982 ttle same. But the early lne makes the 49ers a sx-pont favorte and the recent trend s for blowouts n the NFL ttle game. There has not been a close Super Bowl snce the Pttsburgh Steelers beat the Dallas Cowboys n (Forget the 49ers-Beng_als game because San Francsco Ted 20-0 at halftme). Also, the Natonal Conference has won the last four Super Bowls and sx of the eght ths decade. Most say ths happens because the wnner s by far the better team, especally n the NFC. For the most part, that's a bunch of hogwash. The blowouts occur because of the tremendous hype put on the Same. t s made out to be bgger lan t really s and then t flops kerplunk! What the NFL offce needs to do s shorten the tme between the conference champonshps and the Super Bowl to one week. Forget the two-week layoff for that so-called needed extra preparaton. t's unnecessary. Tne rest of the season s played wth one week between games, so why not ths one? That extra week allows the Slayers more tme to realze ow bg ths game s to the naton, therefore addng to the pressure. Plus, the coachng staffs have more tme to break down the opposton n all facets of the game and nstall ways to be more successful aganst them. And all the decpherng and extra chalkboard teachng can take away from what could be a great game. n ths Super Bowl, Bengals head coach Sam Wyche and 49ers mentor Bll Walsh wll prepare ther teams to cope wth Walsh should have the edge because he's coached two Super Bowl wnners before but Wvche was an assstant under Walsh n the 1982 ttle game aganst Cncnnat. So, he's been there too. But that extra week does beneft one group of people reporters lke myself. Sports wrters from across the naton get a vacaton to balmy Mam. After wrtng a feature on one of the team's superstars or lttle-known players, the reporters get to go lay on the Beach and soak up the sun. And the players' and coaches' famles wll do the same. For the teams, ths s just another dstracton. nstead of beng able to go about ther busness, they get to tell ther lfe stores to the naton by way of a reporter. Even though most football fans want to Know about everyone on each team, 'm sure everyone would want to forsake ths nformaton for a compettve, not to menton close, Super Bowl. Hopefully, the two-week layoff ths year won't take away from the ttle tlt. Every fan of the game wants Cncnnat and San Francsco to make the game a close one, not far fetched. f ths game s a blowout, then the NFL should thnk about movng up the game to the week after the conference champonshps. That way, we can all enjoy the Super Bowl., Andy woodard s assstant managng edtor of The BG News. Falcon cersbuck Broncos by Don Hensley assstant sports edtor KALAMAZOO, Mch. The Bowlng Green hockey team needed to accomplsh two goals over break. The Falcons acheved both of these and more last weekend by sweepng Western Mchgan (W> Saturday and 4-3 Frday. The sweep by the Falcons was ther frst on the road n the CCHA snce Nov. 21 of last year when they dd the same at Ferrs State. "t's hard to say, but those two games ths weekend could have very easly been our season," senor co-captan Greg Parks "f we would have lost those games, we would have been at the bottom of the pack. thnk ths wn gves us some confdence and also shows that we are for real ths year." BG came out on a good note Saturday, when the Broncos were called for a delay of game penalty because they dd not come on the ce untl after the horn sounded. The Falcons turned the power-play opportunty nto an early goal when Marc Potvn scored. The game, much lke the entre seres, featured spurts by both teams. Wth the Falcons nursng a 2-0 lead, the Broncos came back when they talled Soals by Mke Eastwood and.eth Jones. Although WMU responded to kot the score, BG goale Paul Cornell played a superb frst perod, when he recorded 15 save.; and foled two Bronco breakaway attempts. The Falcons notched the decdng goal n Saturday's game when Thad Ruseck pcked up a pass from Parks and splt two defensemen before beatng WMU goale BU Horn wth a backhander. A sold defensve effort proved to be the key factor when the Broncos pulled to wthn a goal wth just under two mnutes left n the game. After pullng Horn wth 50 seconds left, WMU mounted a strong attack and suppled great pressure at the BG end only to be turned away by the Falcon defense. "The calber of competton was very good for us," Voll "We found out thngs we needed to mprove on by playng those teams. Ball possesson was our bggest problem n the three losses?' Regardless of problems wth ball control, junor Ange Bonner ddn't seem to have problems gettng the ball nto the hoop. She also ddn't seem to have problems keepng the ball away from BG opponents. The 6-foot-2 center averaged a team hgh 15.5 ponts a game durng the three-week stnt n whch the Falcons faced Eastern llnos, llnos State, Toledo, Cncnnat, Oho State and Mchgan State. She added a team hgh 9.3 rebounds and nne blocked shots. But Bonner s not the only Falcon who has been a scorng threat. Wth most teams concentratng on shuttng down offensve powerhouse Jacke Motycka, other Falcons have worked to keep the scorng alve. Aded by senors Motycka, Megan McGure and Paulette Backstrom, junor Tecca Thompson and sophomore Trac Gorman, who all posted double fgures n the three wns, the Falcons came out vctorous over SU (81-73), Toledo and Eastern llnos (74-55). The more we get out of any starter the better we are." But for the starters, a new face has appeared on the court for the openng tp-off. Thompson has taken over for Gorman as one of the startng forwards. However, accordng to Voll, the swtch may not be a permanent one. "We constantly have to wat to see how people are playng," Voll "t helps our progress." " am not a bt dsapponted wth the swtch. We have to look at the overall pcture and take t from there." Detrot, led by Paul Wllams' 23 ponts, defeated the Falcons and n the process snapped a twelve game losng streak n front of 1,763 fans. Whle the Ttans breathed a sgh of relef, BG's problems became more complex. The setback was the Falcons' thrd straght and the fourth n ther last fve outngs. The Falcons, 6-6 overall, 0-1 n MAC plav, were wthout the servces of leadng scorer Joe Gregory, who was not wth the team n Detrot for specfc undsclosed reasons. Pppn scored BG's frst bucket of the half at the 15:00 mark and the Falcons drew even at wth 11:27 to play. But clutch baskets down the stretch by Detrot's Wllams and the playmakng of 5-10 junor guard Bll Wood, the Ttans took advantage of BG turnovers and cold snootng to ce the vctory. "Bowlng Green ddn't have the outsde shootng threats they usually have, but we got some key plays out of Bll Wood and got some easy baskets down the stretch," sad Ttan frst-year head coach Rcky Brdsong. Larranaga sad hs team needs to sustan ther concentraton for a full 40 mnutes. The game was stll deadlocked at 3-all when Holmes receved a breakaway pass from Kevn Dahl and streaked n on Horn, who gave hm the top corner and that's what Holmes took by depostng hs second game-wnner n the last four games. "When got the puck from Kevn, ddn't thnk the defenseman that was hookng me was gong to let up," Holmes See leers, page p.13. York jolts cers back nto race by Al Franco sports reporter KALAMAZOO, Mch. The Bowlng Green hockey team has receved the "Jerry Jolt" for ts second consecutve season. The "Jolt" s head coach Jerry York's transformaton of the Falcons' between the frst and second half of the season. Lke the scrawny farm boy who enters boot camp and becomes a refned young man, BG has made smlar strdes as the season progressed both last year and n the current campagn. "(t's) just the gradual maturng of our team," York "Early n the season we have to break players n and nstall systems. Maybe we don't wn enough games early because we're tryng to get the team better as the year progresses." "We want to he just as good n October as we can but, f you're gong to be a good team, you have to do some expermentng and some swtchng. The name of the game s to be a good club the second nab! of the year as the playoffs approach." After 17 games last season, the Falcons had a medocre record, but the jolt boosted them to fnsh Ths season BG had dropped to an 8-9 overall record out the team appears to be headng on the same route, wnnng eght of ts last nne games and uppng ts record to Durng Chrstmas break, BG was near^perfect. They splt wth Oho State before defeatng Colgate and Cornell to capture the Syracuse nvtatonal Tournament. The Falcons came home on Jan. 3 to defeat Mchgan-Dearborn, a member of the Amercan Collegate Hockey Assocaton, then departed to Kalamazoo, Mch., where BG resumed league play by wnnng two games aganst Western Mchgan over the weekend. Two reasons for the turnarounds, both ths season and G See Jolt, page p.13.

13 12 lon.wt January lo, 1989 Tankers sweep over weekend Teams ready for stretch run by Mke Drabenstott sports reporter n what Bowlng Green assstant swm coach Gary Layne called a "glorfed tme tral for our swmmers : " the Falcon men and women opened 19K' by scorng bg vctores ov«r Xaver and Ashland Saturday at Cooper Pool. The men defeated Ashland and Xaver w 1, m, and the women dd lkewse wth and wns, respectvely. Exhbton swms by many BG swmmers n the second half of the meet made the scores appear even less ndcatve of BG's domnaton n the meet. Wth the Falcon swmmers wnnng the meet handly, BG Head Coach Bran Gordon was pleased wth hs squads' performance. "t was a good meet for our swmmers, beng able to come out of Chrstmas tred and stll wn meets," Gordon The tredness to whch Gordon referred was caused by 22 workouts over break, ncludng two before the meet on Saturday mornng. Because of BG's superorty n the meet, Gordon was able to try dfferent swmmers n dfferent events, gvng hm an dea of hs teams' flexblty. Rob Hermanet fnshed wth the best tme n three events (1000 freestyle. 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke), whle Andrea Szekely (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Kate Thompson (200 backstroke, 200 breastroke) both took frst place honors. Though Gordon sad the meet was not a good ndcator of Falcon performances n upcomng meets, he offered hs prognoss for both teams. "For the men, every meet ths semester can go ether way dependng on how well they swm. They are capable of wnnng or losng every one," Gordon "The women have the same opportunty n three out of ther fve meets." Gordon also sad both teams show mprovement over last year at semester break. "We are better teams, both the men and the women, than we were at ths tme last year," he contnued. "t s somewhat dscouragng for the women because Mam and Oho (BG's toughest competton) are better ths year than last, but we are good enough to race aganst them. We'll fnd out more durng next month when we swm aganst them," Gordon Gordon also looks for the team to contnue ts mprovement durng the second half of ths season. "Each week s a new challenge. We want to take a step forward each week and have everyone become better n some aspect of ther race," he The BG swmmers contnue ther January slate n Dayton on Frday as they swm aganst Wrght State. Cagers face hghs and lows by Bran Hollenbeck sports reporter The wnter break for the men's basketball team started off wth a jolt of optmsm when the Falcons toppled perennal power Kentucky n the Kentucky nvtatonal, but lke the weather outsde, as the break contnued, the Falcons turned cold. The cagers followed the Kentucky wn, whch head coach Jm Larranaga called 'the bggest n BG hstory', wth a lambastng at the hands of Arkansas State n the cham- Elonshp game of the nvtaonal. The Falcons then returned home and defeated Wrght State Xaver then came nto town and knocked off the cagers, 89-75, startng a Falcon three game skd wth losses followng to Md-Amercan Conference rval Toledo (65-51) and the Unversty of Detrot (68-62). Before the Detrot game Larranaga suspended senor, cocaptan Joe Gregory for dscplnary reasons. Larranaga had no comment on the specfc reason for the suspenson. Gregory's counterpart at the guard spot, Darrell McLane, also mssed the game because of a hamstrng njury. Sophomore Blly Johnson, a Romulus, Mch, natve, flled the hole at pont guard admrably tossng n 18 ponts and dshng off four asssts. Johnson played pont n hgh school (Romulus Hgh School) and planned on playng pont when he came to Bowlng Green. He sad hs past experence made hm feel comfortable aganst Detrot. "Last year played some pont n the frst ten games of the season, and thnk that really helped mprove my ball handlng sklls." Johnson " just decded was gong out and play hard and gve t my best shot. The team really helped me out by showng confdence n me." Johnson sad he thought ever- Kthng went well n the frst half ut felt the Falcons dd not execute well n the second half. " thought n the frst half we dd a real good job of workng the ball around and gettnggood shots," Johnson "That's what we ddn't do n the second half. Wyche wants quck snap CNCNNAT (AP) - The Natonal Football League says the Cncnnat Bengals could have used ther quck-snap tactcs n the AFC Champonshp, despte a pre-game statement that seemed to outlaw the practce. League spokesman Joe Browne sad Monday evenng that a msunderstandng led the Bengals to beleve the 3uck snap was prohbted n le champonshp game Sunday, won by Cncnnat " thnk there was mscommuncaton all around, ncludng on the part of our offce," Browne The Bengals wll be allowed to use the quck snap n the Super Bowl aganst San Fran- csco, as long as they aren't n the process of changng offensve players when they decde to do so, Browne The quck snap became the subject of a week-long controversy buldng up to the AFC Champonshp. Blls coach Marv Levy complaned about the quck snap, used by the Bengals to get a penalty aganst a defense for too many men on the feld. Wyche defended the quck snap as legal, and sad he was angry when league offcals released a statement before the game that seemed to outlaw t. The statement sad that a play would be nullfed "f t s deemed by the game offcals that the offense ganed an unreasonable and unfar advantage by a quck snap of the ball, e.g. a quck snap whch s ntended to cause the defense to be penalzed for too many players on the feld." Tnat's the ntent of the quck snap, so the Bengals ddn't use t durng the champonshp game for fear of beng penalzed. They dd use ther nohuddle offense, whch wasn't affected by the rulng. Wyche sad Monday he was stll troubled by the way the rulng was handed down beforetne champonshp game, and he wanted the quck snap allowed for the Super Bowl. WELCOME BACK!
