As we enter our 21 st season, we are looking forward to another exciting and successful year! It is our goal to train cheerleaders to compete at the highest possible competitive level according to the skill and ability of each squad. We hold our squads to a high standard as it relates to respect and integrity, especially in the areas of our dress, choreography, and attitude. In short, we strive for excellence in all that we do. We have prepared the information in this packet to help each family understand the details of being on an All Star Squad as well as the level of commitment that it entails. Sonshine Academy was established in 1991 and is owned and operated by Scott & Elsie Rose Wright. The mission of Sonshine Academy is to provide quality instruction in a fun, safe, and wholesome environment. We believe children can experience their specialness and their uniqueness as the creation of God by learning athletic and artistic skills in a positive, encouraging environment. In this type of environment, we affirm their self-esteem as well as teaching life lessons such as teamwork, commitment, goal setting, and respect for authority and for others. In short, our goal is to cooperate with parents to develop their child s ability to shine. Sonshine Academy s Cheer Force All Star Program began in 1998 and has grown into one of the largest and most successful All Star Cheerleading programs in the state. Over the years we have trained thousands of cheer athletes winning numerous regional, state, and national championship titles. Cheer Force has an incredible staff with years of experience and tons of enthusiasm. 2 What is All Star Cheerleading? All Star Cheerleading is a very popular and growing competitive sport. Different from traditional cheerleading, athletes who participate in the sport of All Star Cheerleading do not cheer for a team, they ARE the team. The coaches create a competition routine, which includes the elements of tumbling, stunts, jumps, dance, and other skills set to music. Cheer Force has two different types of competitive squads: All Star and All Star Prep. All Star Prep is for those who want to have the competitive All Star experience with a lesser time and financial commitment than regular All Star squads. Also, many of our first year cheerleaders begin on a Prep squad in order to gain the necessary experience to move to a regular All Star squad the next season. All-Star cheerleading is a great way for young athletes to learn new skills while building teamwork, goal-setting, sportsmanship, and numerous other social skills while making lifelong friendships. 6 Team Expectations Attendance Policy All Star Competitive Cheerleading is a select sport. It takes a full commitment from both the athlete and the family. Both parents and the athlete must be aware of the attendance requirements. Due to the unique team aspect of All-Star cheerleading, the absence of one athlete can severely hinder the effectiveness of practice for the entire team. The ability of all athletes to attend all practices maximizes the team s ability to reach its full potential. Cheerleading is more of a team sport than any other sport. We have no backups or second string athletes. When one athlete misses a practice, it affects three to four other athletes who cannot stunt and affects the entire team who cannot fully execute the pyramid. It is very important for athletes to be fully committed to their teams. All Practices and tumbling classes are mandatory. We do understand that throughout the entire year, there will be graded school events, school cheer commitments, and major family events such as weddings. With the exception of a death in the family or an athlete s summer vacation days (as listed below), any athlete who misses a practice for ANY reason will need to make-up the work done in the missed practice. This includes but not limited to Strength training, jump conditioning, stunting, tumbling, and flexibility exercises. *Note: Tumbling classes are also mandatory but can be made up if missed by scheduling a make-up class. Athletes must notify coaches of the absence in writing with at least 14 days notice. Absences should be ed to absent@cheerforcearkansas.com. You must receive an APPROVED for your absences to be valid. Please do not call or text your coaches or team reps. Please understand that multiple absences will affect the athlete s role in the routine through lost spots in formations and/or changed stunting roles. Recurring absences will result in an athlete being moved to a different team within our program or removed from the program all together due to lack of commitment. If an athlete is sick or injured, they should still attend practice. Athletes who are sick or injured will not be required to participate; however, any restrictions for practice please or send doctors note. During the ONE week prior to Show-offs, local and regional competitions there are NO absences allowed. If you are absent you will not be able to participate at the competition unless coach / director says otherwise. 6

7 Extra practice may be called to help the team be at its full potential for the upcoming competition. These practices are MANDATORY unless a coach says otherwise. Choreography: Choreography dates are very important and require mandatory attendance. Please make your plans now and notify your school coaches, work, family, etc. Athletes who miss choreography without notice and a valid reason, will not be choreographed into the routine. Competitions: Competition schedule is subject to change at any time. End of the year competitions will be chosen by coaches on a team by team basis. THERE ARE NO EXCUSED ABSENCES FROM A COMPETITION. Every athlete is expected to attend every competition. If an athlete is ill on the day of a competition, they will be expected to show up and do their best to compete. In the case of severe illness, the parents will be expected to stay in frequent communication with the coaches. If an athlete NO SHOWS a competition the athlete will be dismissed from the program immediately and will be charged the total entry fee for the team/athletes that were affected by the athlete not showing. Vacations and Summer: We try to balance the importance of family time and the needs of the team. We will allow a maximum of 6 absences for summer vacations between May 29th through July 24th. Advanced notice of all summer absences will be required by the week of May 30th. We ask that you try to schedule your vacations to minimize the amount of practice time missed, and when possible, take advantage of the All Star summer break from Aug 4th-11th. A Summer Athlete Fill In requirement will be explained at the initial parent meetings. *Note: Tumbling classes are also mandatory but can be made up if missed by scheduling a make-up class. Sunday Practices: June 3 rd - July 24 th : During the summer, we follow a revised practice schedule for those squads who practice on Sunday. This is so that our athletes spend their weekends with their families. Teams will have their normal scheduled weekly practice and their weekend practice will be moved to one day during the week between the hours of 10:00-4:00 p.m. or later in the evening of a weekday if we have any open time slots. All athletes must be available to practice after Christmas break on Thurs., Jan. 3 rd Practice Wear: Each team athlete is expected to wear the correct practice outfit to each practice. Shoes must be worn to every practice, hair must be pulled back in tight high ponytails with bow, and no jewelry of any kind. Wearing the wrong attire to practice, will result in the athlete jump conditioning / strength conditioning at the end of practice. 7

8 Flyers: All flyers are highly recommended to take a Flyer Class for $25 per month. Regardless of age or level, great flexibility, beautiful body positions, sharp motions, and incredible performance are a necessity as a flyer. Starting January 2019 Flyer Class schedule will be modified based on schedule. You will need to resign up if you would like to continue in January. Bases and Back-spots: All bases and back-spots are highly recommended to take a Strength Class for $25 per month. More details will be out soon. Maintain Skills: Athletes are expected to maintain the skills they threw at tryouts throughout the season and may be made an alternate or moved to another team if they lose those skills. Once made an alternate, athletes are not guaranteed their spot back due to choreography changes, etc. Athletes must also be successful at stunting their assigned role to remain on the mat. Summer Skills Check: The week of June 25th-29th will be a skills check week. This means each athlete will be evaluated to ensure they have at least the same skills they tried out with. Movement of athletes between squads will take place at this time. Parent Viewing Prior to Competition: Parents will be asked to follow a drop off policy on the weeks of competitions. This allows for greater focus by our athletes during their team practice time and also allows our parents to celebrate the growth of the team from week to week. Parent Lobby: We desire and promote a culture of encouragement, love, and positivity in all areas of the gym including the lobby. We want our athletes, families and coaches to feel safe coming to the gym. We build each other up and not tear each other down. If this positive culture is difficult for you as a parent to support then CFA is not the program that is best for you. 8

9 Practice, Camps & Competitions ***Summer Camp/Choreography Choreography Camp Senior Level 5 & 2 other teams TBA Choreography with Ben Lear: June 26-30th ***Summer Camp is tentatively set for the weeks of July 23-August 3. Please make note that attendance is MANDATORY for camp. We ask that you schedule vacations, other camps, etc around these dates. Summer Camp is extremely important because this is when routine choreography is learned. Athletes who miss choreography, will not be choreographed into the routine unless a coach/ director says otherwise. Practice Hours: Prep Teams (Tiny/ Tiny Novice) Two 1 hour practices per week plus a 45 minute tumbling class. Prep Teams (Mini-Senior) - Two 1 hour practices per week plus a separate 1 hour tumbling class All Level 1 Squads and Mini Level 2 Two 1.5 hour practices per week plus a separate 1 hour tumbling class All Youth Level 2-4 Squads Two 2 hour practices per week plus a separate 1 hour tumbling class Level 5 squads- One 2 hour practice and one 3 hour practice per week plus a separate 1 hour tumbling class Competitions: The competitive season begins in November and ends in May. No athlete is allowed to miss a competition except under EXTREME circumstances (i.e. family emergency). Missing a competition for any other reason may result in dismissal from the team. All-Star squads will compete in approximately 6-8 competitions a season plus an end of season competition. At least 2-3 of these competitions will be out of state nationals and require a weekend stay. It is possible that some of these out of state competitions may include travel time on Friday and/or Monday. Please be aware that we may add practices on Thursday or Friday of competitions! Competition schedule is subject to change at any time. End of the year competitions will be chosen by coaches on a team by team basis. We will post our competition schedule in late July. 9
