The following information will assist you in planning for the Girls State Gymnastics Meet. Please contact Amy Doherty, Tournament Director, with questions, or The following information can be found on the MSHSL website ( Revenue Sharing Plan Athletic Rules and Policies Manual Media Policy Manual Student Worker Sign-Up Form (available on the Gymnastics page, under Tournament Related Files) BEFORE THE STATE TOURNAMENT: There is NOT a packet for schools that qualify individuals into the tournament. Go to the League s website at to obtain relevant information. State Tournament documents can be found on your Coaches Clipboard page. PARKING AT THE U of MN SPORTS PAVILION: Bus Parking: School buses and school vans can park on 6 th Street SE. Access 6 th Street parking via University Avenue to 23 rd Avenue to 6 th Street. Parking passes are NOT required for buses and school vans parking on the street. Refer to the parking map that is posted on the MSHSL website (Gymnastics Page). Spectator Parking: There will be NO RESERVED PARKING for spectators. Spectators can park in University Ave ramp if there are spaces available. Once this ramp is full, additional parking options are 4 th Street Ramp (4 th Street and 17 th Avenue), Pay Lot #37 (5 th Street and Oak Street). Refer to the parking map that is posted on the MSHSL website (Gymnastics Page). PLEASE NOTE: The 2016 NHL Stadium Series Alumni Game will be held at the University of MN TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday, February 20 th. Due to this event, teams and spectators should allow extra time to arrive and park on campus. PARTICIPANTS ARRIVING AND ENTERING THE SPORTS PAVILION: 1. Entrances to Sports Pavilion for School Registration: a. The Pass Gate is located at the south entrance into the Pavilion, off of University Ave. b. Pass Gate opens at 7:00 a.m. daily. c. Each participating school is responsible for the conduct of its spectators at the tournament site. 2. Registration: School packets will contain competitor numbers, entry cards, and other pertinent information. The packets will be available at 7:00 a.m. and will be signed out to the coach or to authorized school personnel only. No packets will be signed out to students or parents. 1
2 3. Coach, athlete and spotters hands will be stamped when entering the competitive area. Security will be checking for this stamp to ensure the safety of athletes, coaches and spotters. 4. Coaches Room is located in the Club Room overlooking the competition floor. SPECTATOR TICKETS All spectators must enter through the Pavilion s Main Ticket Entrance on the west end of the facility. Sales of tickets will begin at 10:00 for the morning session and 5:00 for the evening session. All spectator tickets are sold as GENERAL ADMISSION. Schools (including participating gymnasts and coaches) MAY NOT save spectator seating by placing items on the seats. Food, beverages, coolers, tri-pods/mono-pods/selfie sticks, balloons, chair backs and backpacks will NOT be allowed into the facility. LODGING FOR STATE MEET PARTICIPANTS: Information is available on the MSHSL administrative side of the website and on the Coaches Clipboard. Note: A courtesy block of rooms is available as space allows. There is not a guaranteed block of rooms. STATE MEET INFORMATION: OFFICIAL SQUAD, TEAM LINE-UPS and SUBSTITUTION POLICIES for TEAM QUALIFIERS: 1. The Order of Competition: will be established within each section for individual and all-around competitors by a draw. The order will be included in the coach s packet at the registration table. The individual and all-around qualifiers from each section will compete as a group and will rotate together from event to event. When a competitor is "on deck," she should present her score card and her competitor number to the event scorer. The coach should check the scorecard to verify that it is properly marked for the individual and all-around competition. If a gymnast does not compete in her assigned order, she may be disqualified from that event. 2. Substitutions: The Meet Referee shall be informed of all scratches. Individual and All-Around Competition: No substitutions permitted. The individual that qualified cannot be replaced. PREPARATION FOR COMPETITION: Please note: during warm-ups, a member of your coaching staff may be called up to the announcer s area to verify the pronunciation of gymnasts names. 1. Parade of Section Champions: Will be organized prior to each session. Gymnasts will be instructed to line up at the Club Level of the Pavilion. Coaches are invited to participate (no shoes, please).the official squad including the four (4) team alternates will be introduced during the Parade of Champions. Appropriate uniforms are required during the parade. Teams must be dressed in a team warm-up and may carry flowers. All other spirit team items will not be allowed to be worn or carried during the Parade of Champions. Note: the four sections who warm-up in the 8 th warm-up rotation will be the first four sections to march in for the Parade of Champions. Because those four teams have a bye during the first round of competition, they are encouraged to change into their competition leotards at the conclusion of the Parade of Champions or during the beginning of the first rotation. 2. Dressing Rooms: All possessions must be kept with the athlete/team. We will not have access to Williams Arena. There are restrooms available for the changing of clothing. (We will not have access to the lower level locker rooms as we have in past years). Athletes may not change clothing in the bleacher area. 3. Warm-ups throughout the Meet: A three (3) minute 'touch' warm-up will be scheduled at each event at the start of each rotation. When the sections rotate to the next event, three (3) minutes will be provided for gymnasts to have contact with the equipment, i.e., to do a kip on the bars, tumbling on the floor exercise mat, etc., prior to the first routine. Vault touch will consist of one sprint down the runway without contact with the board and a maximum of 2 approaches with contact with the board for each competitor. 4. Music: The MSHSL will provide the music during warm-ups and touch warm-ups. 5. Supervision: A coach shall be present and responsible for participants during warm-ups and competition, including the time scheduled for the coaches meeting. 6. Scoring: The modified open scoring method has been adopted for the State Meet. Judges flash their scores for each competitor and write their scores for each competitor on the judges score sheet, which is then turned in to the official scorer for that event. 2
3 7. Alternates: Only members of the official squad including team alternates will be permitted on the competitive floor during the warm-ups and the meet. Non-participating team members must sit in the general spectator area. 8. Leotards: Competitors shall wear their school/team leotard for team competition on Thursday and for the individual and all-around competition on Friday. 9. Coaches Dress Policy: a. Dress the part, look professional b. NO HATS, baseball or otherwise c. School attire or dress clothes are preferred during the competition. d. Coaches MAY NOT wear heels on the competition floor. EQUIPMENT for the STATE MEET: a. Each school must bring their own vaulting board(s) and, if used, Hand Placement Mat. None will be provided. All other equipment will be provided by the University of MN (please see attached list.) No additional equipment may be brought into the meet. b. Floor exercise music must be recorded onto a CD or may be on an ipod. Reminder: music is best recorded at a moderate level which permits the volume to be adjusted. c. Due to space, there will be only 1 beam available for warm-up and competition. d. Landing mats at the University are 20 centimeters. Please prepare your athletes. e. A tak-covered vault table will be used. Coaches are responsible for educating their athletes on the use of chalk with the tak-covered vault. f. Cabled uneven bars will be used. HEAD COACHES MEETING: Each school s head coach is required to attend a brief meeting prior to the meet. The meeting will be held in the Coaches Room on the Club Level of the Pavilion. The meetings will be held as follows. Class A Ind. & All-Around Part. Saturday-Session 3 8:15 a.m. Class AA Ind. & All-Around Part. Saturday-Session 4 3:15 p.m. GENERAL STRETCH/WARM UP TUMBLING/BAR SETTING SCHEDULE: Bar Settings: Gymnasts may swing between bars to determine appropriate setting. Skills may NOT be performed during the bar settings. OTHER INFORMATION: PHOTO INFORMATION The Minnesota State High School is offering souvenir photographs for competitors in state tournaments and meets. The League has established a photographic partnership with Minnesota Prep Photo. As the Official Photographer of the Minnesota State High School League, Minnesota Prep Photo has established its own photographic website where member schools and the general public may view and purchase photos and posters of various sizes. Photos will be posted within 14 days after the conclusion of each tournament. U of MN SPORTS PAVILION POLICIES: Certain items are not allowed inside, such as balloons, confetti, toilet paper rolls, liquid containers and mechanical air horns. Security guards will confiscate any of these items at the gate. The University of MN is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please advise team members not to leave items unattended. No pop cans or glass containers are allowed in the competitive areas. 4
5 2016 STATE GIRLS GYMNASTICS MEET Tournament Admittance Form The MSHSL does not provide participants, coaches, or additional team members with paper credentials. Individuals entering the competition floor must be listed either in the event program or on the following pass list. (Note: participants, coaches and spotters will be provided with a souvenir bag tag pass to commemorate their participation in this year s tournament.) The MSHSL will use the official roster that is in the event program for participants to gain free access to the floor. Coaches (2) and spotter (1) must be listed below. Non-competitors and additional spotters who are official members of the schools coaching staff, will be charged $12.00 per session or $48.00 for an all tournament pass and must show a picture ID or hand stamp to enter the competition floor area. Each Head Coach is responsible for purchasing additional team member and spotter passes (additional team members will not be allowed on the competitive floor and must remain in the bleachers.) I certify that the coaches/spotters listed on this form have been hired by my school district and meet the following requirements: Have gone through the required background check. Have completed the MSHSL Continuing Education Requirement. Have completed the Gymnastics Rules Interpretation Meeting. By doing so, they meet all MN State Statutes required of MN coaches and MSHSL Board of Directors education requirements. 6 PROCEDURES for RESOLVING VERIFIED CLERICAL ERRORS: 1. Verified clerical errors are those errors which exist after the meet referee has signed the official score sheets. Procedures shall be developed which can correct these errors before the meet results are final. Rules Which Apply: The National Federation Girls Gymnastics Rules book, Rule , p. 9: Article 11. The meet referee shall assist with and verify the meet results by signing the official score sheet making the meet results final. Rule 3-4-4, p. 11: Article 4. Procedure for dealing with verified clerical errors in scores shall be determined by the state association. MSHSL Policy: Under the provisions of the above rules, time shall be provided for coaches to resolve inquiries about clerical errors after the meet referee has signed the results. After that period, the results are final and may not be corrected. 2. During the Meet: coaches are provided with an opportunity to continually examine and question the recorded scores: Rule 5-1-5, p. 15: A coach may address the meet referee only by submitting in writing, an inquiry(ies) concerning his/her gymnast(s). The written inquiry or the verbal intent to inquire shall be submitted to the meet referee no later than five (5) minutes after all scores for that team are recorded for that individual event. The inquiries shall only concern: a. Difficulty/vault value; b. Event requirements; c. Bonus; d. Neutral deductions; e. A mathematical error. Note: No other judgment decisions shall be questioned. Rule 5-1-6, p. 15: A gymnast's recorded scores may be checked by a coach at the scorer's table without deduction. After being recorded at the scorer's table, the judges' event summary score sheets may be checked by the coach without deduction. 3. At the Conclusion of Competition. MSHSL Policy: When the last routines are completed, the following procedures will ensure that a final check is provided before the meet results are final and awards presented: a. The event scoring table shall send all scores to the INQUIRY table for their examination. Coaches have five minutes to make any written inquiry or the verbal intent to inquire (5-1-5) to the Meet Referee.** b. The Head Scorer shall review the final placement of competitors under the supervision of the meet referee. c. After the meet referee has signed the official score sheets, the score sheets shall be posted for coaches to examine. Coaches must immediately bring verbal inquires regarding potential clerical errors to the attention of the meet referee. d. After the meet referee has resolved any inquiries about clerical errors, the awards ceremonies will begin and the meet results are final. ** If there is an inquiry following the last rotation, the meet referee should notify the tournament director/meet manager. 6
