Devil DanceSport presents: Saturday November 2, 2013 Arizona Ballroom, Memorial Union Arizona State University Tempe, Arizona Deadline for entries October 19,
Greetings from Arizona! Devil DanceSport is glad to invite you to the sixth annual Devil DanceSport Invitational! As always, it will be held at the sunny campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Last year, our competition saw competitors from seven different colleges and universities register for over 1,000 entries. As a result, the Devil DanceSport Invitational has quickly grown to become the largest amateur ballroom dance competition in the state of Arizona. The competition will include amateur single-dance events and multi-dance events for individual partnerships. These events cover the American Rhythm, American Smooth, International Latin and International Standard dances, nightclub dances such as Salsa, West Coast Swing, and Lindy Hop, and more. We will also offer a Nine-Dance event and a Ten-Dance event that cover the American and International styles of dancesport. For teams, the Devil DanceSport invitational offers a formation team competition. Please see the formation team section of the packet for information on registering your team(s). Additionally, keeping with the collegiate tradition, there will be team matches pitting universities against each other, including our popular Newcomer Team Match. Since we recognize that college students need to stretch their dancing dollars, we are offering competitors the ability to register for three different competitive levels while only having to pay one entry fee for all of the events. Additionally, spectators will now be able to come watch their classmates, teammates or family members completely free of charge. Come and dance your hearts out! The following is our complete DDSI Information Packet, with all the information you need to plan your trip to Tempe, Arizona. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at info@devildancesport.com, or at our Facebook event page ( We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, November 2, 2013! Sincerely, Carlos Ballesteros President, Devil DanceSport Deadline for Entries: October 19, 2013

Rules and Regulations Eligibility The Invitational is open to all amateur ballroom dancers who are affiliated (e.g. students, staff, faculty, recent alumni) with a university, college, or another educational institution. Community members are welcome to participate in the Invitational. However, at least one member of each partnership must satisfy the academic affiliation requirements stated above, and neither the leader nor the follower may be a professional DanceSport athlete. All events are open to leaders and followers of either gender. Entry Restrictions Any one individual can enter in up to three single-dance and multi-dance levels (e.g. two single-dance levels and one multi-dance level, or two multi-dance levels and one single-dance level) in any given style (Rhythm/Latin/Smooth/Standard). We encourage all dancers to enter in as many events as they are eligible for. Nine- and Ten-Dance events do not count towards the three-level limit. If an individual is dancing more than one single-dance level in a given style, then he/she is only allowed to register for two consecutive levels of single-dance events within that style (see exception after table). The same rule applies for dancers competing in more than one multi-dance event in a given style. Examples: Acceptable registrations Unacceptable registrations Bronze/Silver Smooth Newcomer/Silver Smooth Bronze/Silver/Novice Standard Bronze/Silver/Gold Latin Bronze/Silver Latin AND Bronze/Silver/Novice/Pre- Silver/Gold Rhythm Champ Rhythm Ladies registered in the Silver closed-syllabus level are allowed to dance in the Newcomer division if and only if they are dancing in Newcomer as leaders, and their partners satisfy the eligibility requirements for Newcomer. Furthermore, ladies who use this clause to compete in a Newcomer single-dance heat must also register to dance all heats of the same dance in both the Bronze level and Silver levels (e.g. a Silver lady leading Newcomer American Waltz must also register for Bronze American Waltz and Silver American Waltz).
Registration All entries must be postmarked by the registration deadline (October 19, 2013) to be guaranteed to be in the competition s official program. Entries postmarked after this date are subject to a late fee, are not guaranteed to be in the official program, and will be accepted only if they do not significantly disrupt the schedule of events, at the registrar s discretion. Entries received after October 31, 2013 will not be processed. A competitor wishing to register after October 31, 2013 must register in person at the Invitational, and his/her entries must be added manually at the competition using the Drop/Add forms available on-site. Event additions and scratches may be done by: a) Mailing an amended entry form before the registration deadline (October 19, 2013) b) ing the Invitational s registrar (info@devildancesport.com) before October 31, 2013 c) Using Drop/Add forms available at the Invitational. Drop/Add forms will only be processed before the start of the session containing the heats to be added or dropped. The organizers reserve the right to combine or cancel any heats where less than four couples have registered by the October 19, 2013 registration deadline. Syllabus Levels All syllabus-level events are single-dance events. The Newcomer category is reserved for dancers who have never competed or who have been dancing less than one year. All Newcomer, Bronze, Silver and Gold-level events are closed syllabus only. A violation of the syllabus is cause for disqualification. See USA Dance, NDCA, DVIDA, or ISTD syllabi for approved steps. Multi-Dance Events Participants competing in multi-dance events must dance all the dances that comprise the event in order to be scored. Open choreography is allowed in all multi-dance events. Nightclub and Intercollegiate Events All nightclub dance events, with the exception of the Newcomer-level events, are anything goes that is, all levels will compete together and lifts, drops, tricks, etc. are all acceptable. Open choreography is allowed on all anything goes events.
The Newcomer Salsa event is open only to dancers eligible to compete in the Newcomer division for closed-syllabus events. Lifts, drops, and tricks will not be allowed in this event. Time permitting, intercollegiate single-dance events will be offered at the Invitational. Competitors will be able to sign up for these events using Drop/Add forms on the day of the competition. Both members of the partnership must be from different colleges/universities. Additional information about intercollegiate events will be announced a few weeks prior to the Invitational via and via the Facebook event. Formation and Exhibition Teams Formation team competitions are open to groups of four to ten couples. Each school may register multiple formation and exhibition teams, but all teams from each school must perform a different routine. No competitor may perform in more than one team from the same school. Exhibition teams will not be scored, and may be asked to perform at various times throughout the day to help the competition flow smoothly. Exhibition teams will be notified of their performance time in advance. Schools may elect to perform either a single-dance formation or a medley. There will be a time limit of six minutes per routine. The timing of the routine begins when the first person sets foot onto the dance floor, and ends when the last person on the team steps off the floor. Lifts are allowed at any time in the routine. Teams are asked to bring their music on the day of the competition on a clearly labeled CD. Teams are encouraged to bring backup copies of their music in digital format as well, in case there are problems playing the CD. Coaches/Organizers of both Formation and Exhibition Teams should register their teams by using the Team Entry Form before the registration deadline (October 19, 2013). Formation and exhibition team members who are not competing in any partnership event (single-dance, multi-dance, or nightclub dance) are welcome to attend the competition as spectators. Team Matches Two team match events will be offered: a themed team match, and a Newcomer team match. Schools should register for the team matches by mailing a Team Entry Form before October 19, Each school is only allowed to enter one set of participants in the themed team match, and one set of participants in the Newcomer team match. The only exception to this rule occurs when there is more than one distinct
collegiate team from one school; in this case, each collegiate team is treated as a separate school. In order to compete in the Newcomer team match, both members of a couple must be eligible to dance in the Newcomer division for closedsyllabus events. No individual may compete in more than one dance within each team match event. Collegiate teams are strongly encouraged to compete with entirely different rosters for each team match. The dances that will comprise the themed team match will be announced a few weeks prior to the Invitational via and via the Facebook event. The dances that will comprise the Newcomer team match will be selected at random during the competition. Attire and Costumes Costumes (attire with reflective fabric, light effects, feathers, rhinestones, etc.) are allowed at all levels, but not required. No shorts or jeans should be worn while competing. Ladies are not allowed to wear pants unless they are dancing as the leader.
