3 COMPLIANCE GUIDELINES FOR NU BOOSTERS The University of Nebraska Athletic Department takes great pride in abiding by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Big 12 Conference rules and guidelines that govern Division I competition. For the benefit of the many alumni, fans and booster club members who are so active in supporting and assisting the Huskers throughout the year, we would like to remind everyone of a few definitions and rules that apply to all athletic representatives and boosters. NCAA Principles Institutional Control It is the responsibility of the University of Nebraska to control its intercollegiate athletic program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. Responsibility The University of Nebraska s responsibility for the conduct of its program includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual, booster or organization engaged in activities promoting the athletic interests of the institution. Compliance The University of Nebraska must monitor its program to assure compliance and to identify and report to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved. An institution found to have violated NCAA rules is subject to disciplinary and corrective actions as determined by the NCAA. NCAA Definitions Athletic Representative/Booster You are considered to be a University of Nebraska athletic representative if you: Are a present or past member of a University of Nebraska booster club or agency that promotes the Huskers' intercollegiate athletic program; Have made financial contributions to the athletic department or to an athletic booster organization of the University of Nebraska; Are, or have been, providing benefits (e.g., summer jobs, meals etc.) to enrolled student-athletes, their family members or friends; Are, or have been, involved in any manner of promoting the University of Nebraska intercollegiate athletic program. Please note: Once an individual is identified as an athletic representative, that person retains that identity indefinitely. The University of Nebraska is ultimately responsible for the acts of all representatives of athletic interests in relation to NCAA rules and regulations. Prospective Student-Athlete A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools and junior colleges, as well as students who have officially withdrawn from a four-year institution and plan to transfer to another institution. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution or a booster provides the individual or the individual s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. A good rule of thumb is to treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects. Student-Athlete A student-athlete is a student whose enrollment was solicited by a member of the athletic staff or other representative of athletic interests with a view toward the student s ultimate participation in the intercollegiate athletic program. Contact A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect, or the prospect s parent or legal guardian, and an institutional staff member or athletic representative during which any dialogue occurs. Recruiting Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect s family member (or guardian) by an institutional staff member or by an athletic representative of the institution, for the purpose of securing the prospect s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution s intercollegiate athletic program. However, here are a few ways that a Husker booster may be involved: Do discuss summer employment opportunities with a prospect after he/she has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Nebraska. Do attend high school athletic events without contacting prospective student-athletes. Do continue existing friendships with families and friends of prospective student-athletes. Do send recommendation letters, newspaper clippings or similar information about prospective student-athletes to Husker coaches. Extra Benefits Guidelines for Boosters Extra Benefit An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or an athletic representative to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Boosters may not provide any special arrangement considered to be an extra benefit by NCAA definition. Examples of extra benefits include but are not limited to: Providing cash or loans of any amount; Signing or co-signing for a loan or other forms of financial assistance; Providing the use of a telephone to make local or long distance calls; Transporting a student-athlete or providing the use of a vehicle; Providing free or reduced rent housing; Giving gifts of any kind (i.e. birthday, Christmas, Valentine s Day); Promising a student-athlete post-graduate education or employment; Offering free services (i.e. clothing, airline tickets, laundry, car repair, haircuts, restaurant meals); Providing payment to a student-athlete for a booster club speaking engagement; Providing employment for relatives or friends. However, here are a few ways that a Husker booster may help: Do invite a student-athlete to participate in non-profit, charitable or educational events. Do invite a student-athlete into your home for an occasional meal. Do contact the NU Athletic Compliance Office for approval prior to a student-athlete engaging in outside speaking or promotional activities. Do pay a student-athlete the commensurate rate for actual and legitimate employment. For further information regarding NCAA Guidelines for Athletic Representatives, please contact the Athletic Compliance Office at or Inquiries may also be mailed to the Athletic Compliance Office at One Memorial Stadium, P.O. Box , Lincoln, NE or faxed to Erin Davis 13 COSIDA ACADEMIC All-AMERICANS Guidelines and Reminders for Boosters A booster may not contact the prospect, prospect s coach, principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate or recruit the prospect. A booster may not expend funds to entertain or provide transportation for prospective studentathlete, family members or friends. A booster may not become directly or indirectly involved in making arrangements for a prospect, or the prospect s relative or friends to receive money or financial aid of any kind. A booster may not contact a prospective student-athlete through letter writing, telephone calling or other forms of communication. HOST OF THE 2009 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS N

Dan Beebe Commissioner In basketball, nine men s and women s teams have advanced to their respective Final Fours in the past seven seasons as the Big 12 continues its place among the elite intercollegiate athletic conferences. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Big 12 student-athletes also do well in garnering national academic recognition. Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) was named Academic All-America of the Year in volleyball the past two seasons by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America with a 4.0 grade-point average in biochemistry. In addition, she also won the national academic honor presented for all sports each of the last two years and was named recipient of the prestigious Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Pavan is the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed in 1996 to earn the accolade. In its history, the conference can boast of over 300 academic honorees, averaging more than 25 each season. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 201 scholars have received over $1.2 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 12 years of the program. The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, tennis and wrestling. Women s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. The conference is made up of 12 institutions that have shared many traditional rivalries throughout their histories. Member schools include - Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 45 million people and television households in 18 of the top 100 markets within its geographic footprint. The conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the conference in national postseason competition. In the last several years the Big 12 has increased its bowl agreements and expanded television opportunities for all sports through contracts with ABC/ESPN, FSN and CBS College Sports. In its first 12 years, the conference has distributed more than $1 billion to its 12 member institutions. The Big 12 staff administers to over 4,600 student-athletes in 21 sports. Woo, the 2008 Southeast Regional beam and floor champion, is one of NU's most experienced gymnasts and she adds a unique flair to both the floor and beam events for the Huskers. With a beautiful triple twist among her strong tumbling skills on floor, she boasts one of the most eyecatching mixes of skills and choreography in the lineup. On beam, Woo is a two-time All-American whose steady prowess on the event earned her the 2008 Big 12 beam crown. Woo also looks to return to NU's vault lineup in her fourth year. Senior Brittney Williams returns to the Husker lineup after suffering an Achilles tear in early She will enter her senior season bringing considerable experience in her Kylie Stone Tricia Woo Brittney Williams fourth season. A powerful tumbler, consistent performer and clean gymnast on each event, Williams will be a major factor in helping Nebraska's uneven bars, vault and floor teams throughout the year. Junior Kylie Stone also returns to NU's lineup after missing the 2008 season due to an injury suffered in preseason training. A 2004 Olympian and a freshman All-American on vault, she sparkled as an all-arounder in 2007 by setting or tying a career best on every event. Stone is a two-time All-Big 12 honoree, earning conference accolades in the all-around (2006) and vault (2007), and brings impressive tumbling skills and showmanship to Nebraska's lineup. Kathryn Howard gained experience on bars and beam as a sophomore and proved to be one of the Huskers' bright young stars on beam and bars. Howard took home All-Big 12 honors as a freshman and will serve as a solid leadoff on the event, while challenging for a spot on bars. Sophomore Maria Scaffidi also returns to Nebraska's lineup as an all-around candidate in her third year with the Huskers. Scaffidi competed on all four events throughout her sophomore campaign and is poised to do so again this year, with a big demand for her talents on vault and floor. Sophomores Erin Davis and Brittnee Habbib return to add depth to the NU lineup. Habbib begins her sophomore campaign as a strong candidate for the Huskers' bars, beam and floor lineups. Davis will provide much experience for Nebraska's vault and floor lineups in her second year. Davis may also see considerable time on bars. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Seich rejoins the Husker lineup after rehabilitating from an injury in The South Amboy, N.J., native looks to aid the Huskers in their beam and floor lineups. Looking to the Future: The New Husker Class Nebraska welcomes five newcomers to its roster: freshmen Lora Evenstad, Kristin Fyffe, Kassandra Nathe, Claire Stingley and Kailey Ryan. Evenstad, the 2008 Junior Olympic national all-around champion, brings depth and valuable experience to the Husker lineups. In addition to winning her first all-around crown, the Grand Forks, N.D., native and product of Red River Valley Gymnastics placed third on vault and floor and tied for eighth on bars and beam at the Junior Olympic National Championships. A level 10 product of Queen City Gymnastics in Cincinnati, Ohio, Fyffe placed sixth on beam and eighth in the all-around and 12th on vault at the 2006 Nationals. Nathe comes to Lincoln from Granite City Gymnastics in Sartell, Minn. A four-time Junior Olympic National qualifier from 2005 to 2008, she tied for 13th on floor, 15th in the allaround and took 19th on beam at the 2008 Junior Olympic National Championships. Stingley is a Level 10 product of GymNasti Gymnastics in Villa Park, Ill. The 2005 Level 9 Junior Olympic national floor champion also won the 2006 Gateway Challenge Level 10 Championship. A native of Franklin, N.C., Ryan is a two-time uneven bars state champion in North Carolina at Level 9 and Level 10. The Woodward Gymnastics product also earned the bronze in the AA State Competition and placed 16th at the Level 9 Eastern Nationals. N NEBRASKA WOMENS GYMNASTICS

9 Depth and Experience Give NEbraska sharp edge Nebraska's Power Punch: Vault 1 All-American: Stone All-Big 12: Stone Nebraska returns three members of its vault lineup from 2008, when the Huskers finished the season as the nation's 13th-ranked vault team. NU loses three-time vault All-American Emily Parsons and All-Big 12 vaulter Desire' Sniatynski. Junior Kylie Stone will headline the Husker rotation, as she is an All-American in the event and is considered one of the strongest competitors in the Husker lineup. Senior Tricia Woo also returns with valuable experience in the event. Junior Maria Scaffidi will look to build upon a strong sophomore campaign. Sophomore Erin Davis is poised to improve upon her inaugural year with the Huskers on vault as well. Along with valuable veteran experience, the Huskers will look to newcomers Evenstad and Fyffe to break into the lineup. With increased depth, the Huskers see themselves in a strong position to remain consistent across the board of competitors in the event. With an offseason devoted to training and preparing early to improve landings and confidence, the Huskers hope to be ahead of the curve in the vault rotation. I think the vault lineup is going to be strong, if everyone is healthy for us," Assistant Coach Tim Garrison said. "There will be more variety in vault this year and less of a disparity between the first girl and the last. We are looking at more consistency. We've really focused on landings. I don't want to give anything away, because on vault you're going to win it or lose it based on how you land. They've been training for a long period of time, and their confidence level is higher because of that. They can focus more on the fine tuning, that is where the landings come in." Swinging to New Heights: Uneven Bars All-Big 12: Williams The Huskers, who finished nd nationally in bars, return All-Big 12 competitor Brittney Williams to the lineup. Absent from the Nebraska bars lineup is the familiar face of Sniatynski, a two-time All-American and Big 12 champion in the event, as well as Parsons, an All-Big 12 performer in the event. Nebraska also returns Woo, Stone, Scaffidi, Kathryn Howard and Brittnee Habbib. Along with the experience of Williams, the Huskers will look to Stone and Habbib as strong competitors in the lineup. Stone, who missed the 2008 season due to injury, finished 2007 on a solid note by hitting 13-of-14 routines. Scaffidi, who was a key member of the bars lineup in 2008, is set to add an edge to the event for the Huskers. With a great deal of depth at the position, NU is also looking for key contributions from newcomers Evenstad, Nathe and Fyffe. The addition of these strong competitors could help the Huskers bounce back from a 2008 season plagued with injuries in the bars lineup. The bottom line is I feel like we're going to have a lot more depth and a lot more to choose from in our lineup," Head Coach Dan Kendig said. "I like the quality that we have, there is always a lot of work to do, but I think that will be a continuation of a work in progress up until the last day of the season. They have to embrace the journey, the day-to-day things. It's going to be a challenge to see who our six are in the lineup, but it's going to be fun. The tougher the decision is, the better our team will be." Nebraska returns two All-Americans to its 2009 lineup, led by three-time All-American Tricia Woo. Balancing Act: Beam 1 All-American: Woo (2) Big 12 Champion: Woo All-Big 12: Woo, Howard The Huskers, who finished 2008 as the 12th-best team on beam nationally, lose All-Americans Parsons and Sniatynski, but return All-American and Big 12 champion Tricia Woo to the lineup. Woo will look to add her spark to the vacant spots left by Sniatynski and Parsons. The Huskers also boast a former national beam champion with the presence of Stone, who was Canada's top beam worker in 2003 and In addition to Stone, NU returns All-Big 12 performer, Howard, who's clean routine and experience will help lead the Huskers. Scaffidi, who also flourished as a strong contributor for the Huskers in 2008, will once again appear to add an edge to the lineup along with Habbib. The five-year Canadian National Team member demonstrated poise and strong skills in her first year with the Huskers. In addition to this experienced group of returnees comes freshmen Nathe and Fyffe, who will both look to break into the lineup in their first year at Nebraska. With an offseason devoted to perfecting landings, developing high-skill routines and adding a unique flair to each gymnast's routine, Nebraska hopes to build upon a strong foundation of beam success in the past. At Nebraska, I feel like our goal each year is to set ourselves apart on beam," Associate Head Coach Danna Durante said. "We've worked every year on not just having high-skill level routines, but making them unique so everybody has something in their routine that makes it different. It's refreshing then when we come to beam. That is my goal. This year everybody has sort of a unique skill, a unique move or a unique dance piece that sets their routine apart. We talk a lot about dance-throughs and visualization, all of that helps us become more comfortable and confident on beam as we compete." Finishing with Flair: Floor Exercise 1 All-American: Woo Easily the Huskers' most entertaining and showstopping event, the floor exercise lineup will shine again in Nebraska completed 2008 ranked 16th nationally as a floor team. Nebraska looks to Woo as its anchor, as she is an All-American on the event who brings stellar twisting and power and a sharp edge to the Husker rotation. Stone also brings powerful skills, as she returns to Nebraska's lineup. Along with Stone, Scaffidi proved especially dependable for the Husker rotation in 2008, as she earned the first individual crown of her career as a sophomore. Habbib also returns as a strong contender for Nebraska's lineup. She hopes to battle for a spot in the rotation every week. In addition, Davis, the seventh-ranked vault competitor in the conference, will find her spot within the lineup as she adds valuable experience in the event. The Huskers once again boast an array of depth in floor exercise with the addition of several freshmen to the team. Junior Olympic all-around champion Evenstad will aid the Huskers in her first year with the team. Along with Evenstad is Nathe, whose exciting routines will help NU's rotation break from the pack. There is a lot of different choreography this year, some of the other stuff and some new stuff, Durante said. "It'll be a lot of neat stuff that the people in the stands will remember and will know when it's coming. I think their routines are muc h more fun this year, and the girls are having a good time with them." "Floor is where you close the night out, especially for us at home," Garrison said. "That's the show, that is what people are coming for. I think their routines are exciting. I think they are going to show up really well this year, because they've started preparing so early. They're really getting prepared, so they're much farther along and should be more prepared once the meets roll around. Floor will be fun to watch this year. The group, as a whole, is doing a great job for us." 13 COSIDA ACADEMIC All-AMERICANS HOST OF THE 2009 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS N

10 13 COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS GUIDE TO WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS General Six gymnasts from each team compete on each of the four events. The team score is obtained by adding the five highest scores on each event. Common deductions are landing deductions. One tenth is taken away for each step that the gymnast takes, while half a tenth is taken for a small hop, and two tenths are deducted for a large hop, step or jump. Other deductions include bent arms, legs, toes or leg separation. Falls that occur are deducted five tenths each time. Finally, a gymnast can receive a neutral deduction on balance beam and floor exercise. Neutral deductions are one tenth; and are received for being over time on beam and floor, and for stepping out of bounds on the floor exercise. They occur each time a gymnast violates these rules. Each event, with the exception of vault, has a series of six (bars) and seven (beam and floor) special requirements (SRs), and omission of any of these requirements results in a two tenths deduction from the start value. Start Values Start value for college 9.5, extra.5 earned through bonus All judges determine start value It is not mandatory that the start values agree Evaluation of Optional Exercises Optional Exercise Requirement Formula A. Uneven bar routines must contain change of direction that is at least 180 degrees or more for the fifth SR. The final SR is a dismount. A bar routine must contain at least 10 skills. Special Requirements At least two bar changes Two flight elements (minimum of two different "C" elements or a "D" and "B") One element with LA (longitudinal axis) turn, minimum of "C" A C dismount Balance Beam The Huskers work to move on the beam like they would when performing on the floor. Their goal is to have routines that set them apart from other teams in the country. The beam is 16 feet long, four feet high and four inches wide. Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration. A beam routine cannot be more than 90 seconds. The first SR a beam routine must contain a tumbling series. It must also contain a dance series of two leaps and/or jumps, one of which must have a value of C or higher. The gymnast must complete a turn of at least 360 degrees for the third SR. The fourth SR is a leap with large amplitude, which may be part of the dance series or on its own. Finally, the gymnast must dismount the beam as the final SR. Special Requirements One acro series with a minimum of two flight elements (both must start and finish on the beam; one element must be a "C" with or without hand support) One dance series of two or more elements (one element at least "C" or higher) Minimum of 360 degree turn no hand support permitted One leap, jump or hop requiring a 180 degree split (front or side) C dismount or B dismount preceded by and directly connected to any C element (acro/dance) Floor Exercise Floor exercise is a combination of dance and tumbling to music on a 12 meter by 12 meter space. Unlike the other events, each vault has its own start value. Many vaults done in college do not start from a Deductions are taken from the start value for technical errors in the pre-flight (approach), the block (the rise from the horse), the post-flight (height and distance from the horse) and the landing. Each gymnast will perform only one vault but has a maximum of three attempts to go over the vault table one time. Special Requirements Must touch the vault table with both hands Must land on feet first Uneven Bars A bars routine must contain at least two bar changes for the first two SRs.
