1 Apprentice Event Written Test Chief Judge: David Benenhaley Event Time: N/A Drop-Dead Time: 15 Minutes Summary: This event is a written test compiled of 24 true/false and multiple-choice safety knowledge questions. Questions will be selected from the APPA and Cooperative Safety manuals. All questions are covered in both manuals. Apprentices will begin the test with 100 points and each missed question will deduct one point. 1. Time will start at judges signal. 2. All apprentices will take the test at the same time. 3. Any incomplete questions will be counted as incorrect. 4. Any answer sheets with more than one block darkened will count as an incorrect answer. 5. Time will be used as a tiebreaker, with the quickest time being awarded. 2 Apprentice Event Hurtman Rescue Chief Judge: David Hayes Event Time: 3 Minutes Drop-Dead Time: 5 Minutes Summary: method. Each Apprentice will perform a Hurtman Rescue utilizing the screwdriver Rules: 1. Apprentice will receive 5 minutes for set-up and questions. 2. Time starts at the judges signal with the lineman standing at least an arms length from the pole. Note: The lineman s belt and hooks will be lying on the ground at an arm length away. The fall arrest device can be attached and adjusted on the pole during the set-up time. Rubber gloves will be inside the glove bag, cuffs down and fingers up, at the start of the event. If fingers protrude outside the bag, the flap must be snapped. Rubber gloves are required ground to ground. 3. The mannequin will hang facing the clevis with the safety strap just above the neutral. The climber will carry the snap end of the hand line rope up the pole. The screwdriver method must be used, and the rope must be rigged with a minimum of one complete wrap around the pole above the screwdriver. 4. The mannequin shall be tied under the arms with three half hitches. Note: (eye spice shall not be used as part of the hitches). The half hitch is the only acceptable knot. A 3 piece of conduit will be used to measure tightness of the rigged Knot. 5. A Buckingham BuckSqueeze Rescue Belt 483M will be used on the mannequin and the climber will cut the orange 483A insert. There will be a 10-point deduction for cutting the belt in the wrong place. 6. Time will stop when the lineman has both feet on the ground. Note: There must be one gaff in the pole at all times when descending the pole.
3 Apprentice Event Obstacle Course Chief Judge: Sean Brown Event Time: 8 Minutes Drop-Dead Time: 12 Minutes Summary: This is a De-Energized event. The apprentice will climb a 40 pole equipped the 3-8 cross-arms. The first cross arm will be mounted at 22 (from ground) and equipped with a drop in Pin Type polymer insulator. The second arm will be mounted at 28 (from ground) and will be equipped with a polymer dead-end insulator mounted to the arm on a 5/8 eye bolt. The top cross arm will be mounted at 33 (from ground) and will be equipped with a 15kV arrestor mounted on an L bracket with a copper ground connected to the bottom (an L bracket and copper ground will also be provided on the opposing end of the arm as well). Each Apprentice will be required to stop at each arm and relocate the arm mounted device to the opposite end of each arm. Rules: 1. The apprentice will have 5 minutes to observe the event site and ask questions. 2. A handline will be available for rescue purposes, but climbers will not carry a handline with them during the event. If an item is dropped, the climber must come to the ground and retrieve it. 3. The apprentice may choose to start relocating each arm mounted device at the top or bottom arm. 4. The apprentice must stop at each arm and relocate the arm mounted device to the opposite end of the arm (The arm mounted device may be positioned on either side of the arm at the beginning of the event). 5. Time will start when the apprentice s first gaff hits the pole. 6. Time stops when the apprentice has both feet safely on the ground. 7. Judging will continue until the apprentice exits the event site. 8. For point deductions, refer to the general rules.

5 Apprentice Event VΦ Dead-End Insulator Change-out Chief Judge: Jim Mussoni Event Time: 12 Minutes Drop-Dead Time: 14 Minutes Summary: This is a De-Energized Event, so Leather Gloves may be used. Each Apprentice will ascend a 40 primary pole and will change out the existing two dead-end insulators with the tools and materials provided. A ground man will not be available. During the set-up time each apprentice will prepare the hand line, grunt bag and inspect the materials for installation. Each apprentice will be required to hang the hand line and lift/lower all required material via the hand line and grunt bag. An eye nut will be placed on the cross-arm bolt for each apprentice to hang the grunt bag. Equipment Provided: One set of Snatch Blocks, One conductor Grip, Two New Insulators Poly, One Nylon Sling, One Hand Line with Hook and Snap, and One Grunt Bag. All Materials will be in the Grunt Bag Rules: 1. Each Apprentice will be allowed 5 minutes for set up and questions. 2. Time will start when the apprentice takes the first step on the pole. 3. Time will stop when both insulators are changed out and all material including snatch blocks are stored in the grunt bag and the bag safely touches the ground. 4. The apprentice will properly restore snatch blocks to their original condition and stored in the grunt bag for the next competitor. 5. The apprentice will also insure that all hardware is with the insulators and stored in the grunt bag for the next competitor 6. The apprentice will be evaluated for safe work at all times 7. Judging stops when the event site is restored for the next competitor. 8. For point deductions, refer to the general rules for 2018

7 Apprentice/Journeyman Event: Knots & Lift Chief Judge: Justin Tedder Event Time: 2:30 Drop-Dead Time: 3:30 Summary: Each Apprentice and Journeyman Team member will tie three knots (square knot, clove hitch, and running bowline). They will also perform a hand over hand cross-arm lift. Stations will be setup at 5 foot spacing. Each station will be labeled with the appropriate knot requirements. Rules: 1. Competitors will be allowed a 5-minute setup time prior to the start of event 2. Only items needed for this event are a climbing belt and secondary safety 3. Competitors will lay their climbing belt on the ground at start line during setup 4. From the start line each Apprentice/Journeyman Team member will put on their climbing belt w/ secondary safety attached. 5. Each competitor will tie 3-knots in their designated order 6. A collar rope will be located at each knot station 7. After all knots are tied, each competitor will proceed to the small H-Frame Structure and place their secondary safety over the cross-arm and attach back to their belt D-ring to safety off. By doing this, it will not allow the competitors to back up to get leverage on the hand-line rope 8. Each competitor must lift/lower the 8 ft. cross-arm (with the provided hand line) 3 times with a hand over hand motion. 9. After the completion of the 3rd lift/lower, competitors will then unsafety from the small H-frame and proceed back to finish line to ring the bell to stop time. 10. Free sliding of the hand line, using a motion not conforming with hand over hand, or dropping the cross-arm to the ground will result in a 2-point deduction.
