4 Greater Winnipeg Classic League November, 2010 As we mentioned in the last newsletter, the league decided to use some special lane oiling patterns for this season, instead of the standard easier house shot. Well, we ve done this for 10 weeks now, and the reviews are mixed. For the first 5 weeks, we used an oiling pattern called Middle Road, and the league averaged 183 during this time, which is significantly lower than the league had averaged the previous season on the house pattern. And for the 2 nd 5 weeks, we used the pattern known as Broadway, and the league averaged 189 during this period, a little better, but still a far cry from the previous season s average. This drop in average shows just how demanding a more difficult oiling pattern can be. Although many people will tell you that it s just a number, it still is a difficult pill for some to swallow when your average drops anywhere from 5 to 25 pins. I give credit to the Classic League bowlers for sticking it out for continuing to challenge themselves, and for not giving up. This experience can only help make the league members even better than they already were. We are now beginning our next 5-week segment on the Beaten Path oiling pattern. After the 15 weeks, trying all 3 oiling patterns, the league will be in a position to evaluate the successes (and failures) of this experience. Remember, if you want to learn more about these oiling patterns, you can visit and search in the Lane Patterns area of the website. The league consists of 10 teams and we bowl on Friday evenings at Chateau Lanes. As of Nov 12 th, our league average to date is Our awards and top 5 averages so far this season are: Steve Snyder Oct22 3-game series of 729 (258,235,236) Erick Tagle Oct29 3-game series of 726 (296,212,218) Erick Tagle Oct29 11-in-a-row (296) Erick Tagle Oct pins game over average Marshall Nykoluk Nov05 3-game series of 761 (278,206,277) Marshall Nykoluk Nov05 Clean Series (4 games) Top 5 averages: Blair Chaban 210 Dan Tereck 210 Lynne Gauthier 205 Lucien Casagrande 204 Nestor Valette A T T E N T I O N C O A C H E S NCCP - Intro To Competition Workshop Please be advised that this season the Manitoba Tenpin Federation is hosting 2-3 NCCP Intro To Competition Coaching Workshops. It was his 2 nd shift (yes, he had qualified in two leagues for this tournament), and he bowled games of 216, 247, and then his 300, for a series total of 763. And yes, he and his partner, Bob Marentette came in 1 st. Interestingly, Paul does almost all of his bowling at his home lanes Laverendrye Bowl. But this tournament was held at another centre Chateau Lanes. * Monday, October 4 th was a special day for Al Sylvestre, bowling on lanes 13 and 14, in the Laverendrye #1 league at Winnipeg s Laverendrye Lanes. He rolled his first ever 800 series! He started out with a 256, then rolled a 299, leaving a 10-pin on his 12 th shot. And in his final game, he needed a strike on his fill ball in the 10 th frame for a 245, and an 800, right on the button. Other than Michael Schmidt (but he s in a separate class of his own), no one has rolled an 800 series at the centre in a little over 10 years. Congratulations, Al! * Each year on Remembrance Day, there is an annual event The Hal Ross Doubles tournament that takes place at Laverendrye Lanes. For Clem Perreault, the 2010 event was a special one. In his very first game of the tournament, Perreault rolled his first-ever perfect game. After rolling another milestone an game series many years ago, Perreault had been waiting for this moment to arrive. To have accomplished both of these feats in a career is pretty special. * Our youth bowlers are lighting up the lanes this season! On September 27, at Laverendrye Lanes, in her Monday night youth league, Danielle Lemoine rolled her 2nd 700 series of her career. She had games of 223, 245, and 238, for a 706 series. On October 3 rd, at Chateau Lanes, in his youth league, Mitch Hupé rolled games of 264, 258, and 235 for an awesome 757 series. On November 7 th, in his youth league, Joe Franchewski rolled an 11-in-a-row game of 297. He s come close to that perfect game quite a few times (he s had three 299 games). It s only a matter of time. 5
