Safe manual handling techniques adopted by supervising adult. 2 adults per sledge to lift down. Induction hand over by member of Rhydd team to responsible adult for group doing activity. Ensure an induction is carried out by the Rhydd Team to the Leader in charge Slips, trips and falls Whilst carrying sledges Ensure safe lifting techniques are used with sufficient numbers of people lifting i.e. two Young Leaders/ adults per sledge. Clear trip hazards from area before accessing. Provide clear information at Safety briefing before activity starts Ensure carry handle is inside sledge and not dragging on ground. Sledges should be dragged across grass by carry handles to/ from sledging site without passengers. Follow manufacturer s guidance on method of entering. Moving parts on Sledge Bruising Trapping fingers in runners As per user guidelines Do not put fingers inside moving tracks on sledges. users must keep hands inside sledges when riding, hold handles inside. Gloves (to be brought by groups/ individuals due to hygiene). NB recommend gloves as per snow sledging. Active and firm group control/ supervision. Page 1 of 5

2 Trapping fingers between sledge and other sledges whilst running. As per user guidelines users are advised to wear gloves. (Need to provide own due to hygiene) users must keep hands inside sledges when riding, hold handles inside. Ensure Safety briefing is carried out to all Leaders and Young people Space sledges out across run (3 sledges maximum) Ensure sledges running parallel to each other. Stagger starts. Collisions with other sledges/other sledge riders. Induction and following of use guidelines. users wearing safety helmets when sledging/ on sledging track. Ensure Qualified First Aider is in attend at all times Ensure slope is clear before commencing run. Active and firm group control/ supervision. One seated rider per sledge. Though two can ride together if under age of 6 years at adult leader s discretion or young children can ride with an adult as per manufacturer s guidelines. Do not use head first. Pedestrians crossing sledge pathways. Due to Collisions Ensure As per user guidelines : Establish cordoned sledging area to keep by standers at safe distance and establish pedestrian route for re climbing slope. Track way in front of sledge is clear of pedestrians before initiating run. Think Safety! Ensure you cordoned the sledging area off Sledges can be given a controlled push off by one bystander. Adverse speeds: do not permit participants to run down slope pushing a sledge. Heavier sledges travel further, if in doubt start further down slope initially to access speed. Instruct all users to brake with feet in a timely way to ensure no collisions with Think Safety! Users should wear appropriate sturdy footwear to enable braking with feet and safe walking up slope towing sledge. 4 Miss use of Oils/ lubricants: Tiroill lubrication of sledge runners. Burns Eye Injury Leaders Application as per manufacturer s instructions by responsible adult prior to use of sledges Safe storage of lubricant. (COSSH) Wear appropriate gloves if applying lubricant (Maintenance team / responsible adult only to undertake this task) Cleaning Sledges after use Lubricating Runners Eye Injury Wear safety goggles provided if power washing / hosing down runners or lubricating runners. this Task Equipment failure Faulty or Damaged Equipment Personal Injury the equipment should be visually inspected immediately before use. equipment should be subject to inspections both on a monthly and yearly basis.
