Never use equipment when residents/visitors are in the grounds around the equipment. 5 Weeding Filling whipper snippers, hedge trimmers and other equipment with fuel What ca happen? cancer Bites from poisonous spiders, snakes and other insects, contact with bacteria, etc Leaking fuel causing damage to the environment where possible ( early in the morning) Wear appropriate protective equipment and clothing such as wide brimmed hats, long-sleeved tops, and sunglasses, which conform to Australian Standard All ers to apply SPF 30+ sunscreen at the beginning of the day and reapply every 2 hours when they are ing doors 3 Use hand tools such as gardening spades etc, where possible Wear correct gloves such as woven or leather gardening gloves whenever weeding or completing similar 2 NEVER refuel where people are smoking, using naked flames or near sources of heat Ensure the fuel to be used is the correct type of fuel provide sunscreen and PPE and ensure all ers are wearing appropriate protection. 6 Using equipment such as whipper snippers, hedge trimmers and other equipment in close proximity to others What ca happen? Fire/explosion from leaking fuel Damage to eyes, skin from contact with fuel Lacerations, puncture wounds, and possible eye injuries caused by objects being ejected or coming into contact with rotating cutting devices and only use purpose built fuel containers in good condition Wear correct PPE as per manufacturer and at least gloves and goggles Always add fuel before beginning Never remove the fuel cap or attempt to add fuel while the engine is running Always refuel and lubricate the equipment in a well ventilated area side Clean up any fuel spillages immediately Replace fuel cap securely 1 Ensure there is an adequate safe ing distance between ers where there are 2 or more ers in the same area. Where they must cross over, there must be adequate protection for both of them one or both should stop the task that they are involved in until the other has passed Use powered tools and equipment during local government regulated hours. Never use equipment around residents/visitors. Set up safety signs and barriers where necessary to prevent others from coming too close to powered tools and equipment. Others should be kept at least 15 meters away from equipment whilst in use. 7 Trimming hedges at a ing height where there is a risk of a serious fall What ca happen? Serious injuries including broken bones, and possible head and spinal they have passed and are a safe distance before continuing. Keep hands and feet well clear of the rotating blades/parts when starting and operating the equipment. Never operate equipment near electrical wiring or leads, and metal objects such as fencing as the rotating blades/parts can get caught and kick back Only operate powered tools and equipment during daylight hours Always stop the engine of equipment when you leave them unattended and when crossing footpaths, etc Ensure that all equipment is turned off and spark plug is disconnected when checking for faults, changing the blades, cutting cords, etc Ensure all equipment is in good order with no obvious signs of structural damage Always wear the correct protective equipment safety eyewear, boots and hearing protection as a minimum 1 Work at Heights Permit must be obtained and completion of risk assessment prior to starting any activity where there is a risk of a person falling more than 2 metres (e.g. heights, pits, unprotected open Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) General Gardening with Equipment Reviewed 23/02/ Page 7 of 10
8 (generally heights above 2 meters should be considered high risk) Exposure to herbicides, pesticides, fungicides through spray units What ca happen? injuries Central nervous system effects, eye irritation, respiratory tract irritation, liver or brain damage edge, sloping or slippery surface, unstable surface, etc) DO NOT from ladders with powered equipment requiring 2 hands to use, such as hedge trimmers etc If you are using non-powered equipment make sure that any ladders used are secured at top and bottom, and you NEVER step on to the top 2 rungs of the ladder Set up trestles with guard rails or use a scissor lift or portable scaffold for at height with powered equipment 2 Select non-dangerous, and non-hazardous alternatives if available Ensure good natural ventilation is present at all times Always know readily where available water for washing or emergency use Determine safety precautions for the substance via the manufacturer s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and ensure people ing with the substance follow the precautions Ensure personal protective equipment including half face respirator, chemical splash goggles and gloves are suitable for the substance and are worn correctly Dispose of excess substance correctly as per the Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) General Gardening with Equipment Reviewed 23/02/ Page 8 of 10
