1 Catalogue Entry # 3 December 2013 Partnership Record & Highest Team Totals This ar(cle has been produced with acknowledgement to the scores entered into MyCricket by the clubs involved and to the Reporter which was published in Box Hill from 1889 to Most would be aware of the outstanding efforts recently seen at the highest level of the compe((on. Firstly, we had a 425 run partnership in the recent McIntosh Shield game between Forest Hill and East Box Hill. This was followed two weeks later by the Box Hill North Super Kings score of 445 against St.Davids, also in McIntosh Shield. Forest Hill vs. East Box Hill 19 October 2013 The below is a copy of the score entered in MyCricket Forest Hill won the toss and batted first. The two opening batsmen, Ben Johnston and Charles Erasmus batted through their eighty overs until 6:25pm Forest Hill vs. East Box Hill Whitehorse Reserve McIntosh Shield 19 October Run Opening Partnership Forest Hill 1st Innings Ben Johnston not out 201 Charles Erasmus not out 200 Sundries 24 TOTAL FOW: NIL A.Gauld ; C.Gauld ; A.Yaman ; G..Shelley ; J.Roche ; S.Law ; L.Cramer ; A.Bethune This effort had a number of historians looking through their records to see if there has been a higher partnership in the BHRDCA or even in local cricket. So far, we re yet to find beter. The two records we ve established are:- BHRDCA Record Partnership (based on available records) BHRDCA only known instance of two batsmen reaching double- centuries in the one innings. I should also men(on Blackburn, who made against St.David s in McIntosh Shield on the same day. Colin Mckenzie (148) and Heath O Dwyer (119 not out) both making tons. I did note that the first wicket to fall was at 302, but with Rob Chancellor making 59 from number three, I suspect that O Dwyer re(red at some point during his innings (happy to be corrected!)

2 Box Hill North Super Kings vs. St.Davids 2 November 2013 The below is a copy of the score entered in MyCricket In posting 445, the Box Hill North Super Kings only faced 62.5 overs equating to a scoring rate of 7.08 runs per over. In all, fifty-two fours were hit along with nine sixes which equates to 58.8% of runs hit to or over the fence. As the bulk of the informa(on has been sourced from s, details regarding partnerships can only be es(mated. But team totals are quite easy to write- up. From 1890 to there were five scores found over 450, with three teams managing to post scores over 500. Here is a brief descrip(on of each of the three matches.

3 Mitcham vs. Croydon 20 & 27 November 1909 Mitcham batted first and kept going until they finally declared at It is not recorded how long they batted for or how many balls they faced, but they declared well into the second day of a three day game. Dudley Boyle s score of 216 beat the previous Reporter record individual score of 215 by H.Hughes for Doncaster Heights against Mitcham twelve months earlier. 216 stood as the individual record until April 1920 when S.B.Gravenell made 238 for Box Hill against Surrey Hills. The total of was the highest score recorded to 1946 and evidence of a higher total in the BHRDCA has yet to be found. From a partnership view, it s likely that Boyle and Kennedy would have added ~350 for the third wicket. Bowman not out 10 Sundries 16 TOTAL FOW: not recorded Brock 0-16; Walker 0-50; Walden 2-46; Willis 0-30; Binks 0-22; Homewood 1-136; Clark 0-36; Cheong 1-113; Nimmo 0-88; Schukraft Jnr 0-32; Schukraft Snr 0-7 Responding to 592, Croydon was dismissed for 31 with Paddy Gilchrist taking 5-16 and W.Kennedy It was no surprise that Croydon decided not to play on the scheduled third day and accept their 561 run loss with Mitcham gaining outright points from what was effectively a forfeit. Croydon finished the season the lowest ranked of the sixteen teams in the competition. Mitcham finished top of the Eastern Section ladder and beat East Burwood by an innings and 83 runs in the semi final with Paddy Gilchrist taking for the match. In the grand final, Mitcham belted Canterbury who after posting a lowly 90 (Lew Barelli 8-46) watched Mitcham reach 427 with Wally Boyle making 209. The Reporter noted that Canterbury s bowling was very poor which is surprising considering that bowlers such as Tom Mackie were included in the attack.

4 Surrey Hills vs. Doncaster 3 & 10 March 1923 It was the last match of the home and away season and while Doncaster had secured a spot in the final four, Surrey Hills had lost five matches during the season and were well out of the finals race. Batting first Surrey Hills were led by captain, George Gunner, who was one of the most experienced batsmen in the competition. At the end of the first day, Surrey Hills had reached with Gunner on 141 not out. Back in those days there was no compulsory closures and Surrey Hills had no need to push for the win so bat on they did until they were dismissed late on the second day for 558. Doncaster responded with 1-31 in the time available. George Gunner was bowled by Les Britt Snr. for 158 which was one of his five centuries for Surrey Hills in a career that lasted well over 300 games with 6657 runs in all. Cedric Crouch completed the innings with figures of 4-224, which remain the most expensive bowling analysis found in BHRDCA history, although by , Crouch was also the highest recorded wicket-taker in BHRDCA history with 1,115 wickets between several Doncaster based clubs (and a very brief stint at Blackburn) A deflated Doncaster played Box Hill in the semifinal and lost by an innings and 77 runs with Box Hill going on to defeat Canterbury by a whopping 317 runs in the grand final. 5 Box Hill Wattles vs. Doncaster B 17 & 24 February 1934 The Box Hill Wattles had endured an ordinary season up to this point. The Wattles had only averaged 107 runs per innings before this game, with six totals under 100 and a highest score of 166 in the first game of the season. Against them in this game was Doncaster s second XI who was entrenched at the bottom of the B Grade Section II ladder with an average of 92 runs per innings, although this included a score of 236 against Box Hill South. The Wattles batted first and at the end of the first day had bolted to with the opening combination of Starling and Hatfield adding ~250 for the first wicket. The Wattles then continued on their merry way on the second day before finally declaring at Box Hilll Wattles vs. Doncaster B B Grade Section II 17 & 24 February 1934 Reporter 3 rd Highest Total Box Hill Wattles 1st Innings W. Les Zerbe made 77 not out, while J.Barry followed up his 58 with In the following match, the Box Hill Wattles came up against the Box Hill Combined side and in reply to the Combined s score of 376 made a miserable 61 to lose by 315 runs. The Wattles finished outside of the final in fifth spot on the B Grade Section II ladder, while Doncaster B finished last.
