He married RHODA EDWARDS April 1819 in Claiborne Co. TN, daughter of LABAN EDWARDS. She was born Abt in Claiborne Co. TN, and died Aft in Russell Co. KY. Notes for THOMAS HOPPER: Claiborne Co., TN Court of Pleas & Quarter Session , pg Monday Feby. 14th 1820 A Deed of conveyance from Thomas Hopper, Rhoda Hopper, Jason Hopper, Betsey Hopper, Geroge Biggie and Huram Edwards to Spencer Edwards for two hundred acres of land was duly acknowledged in open court by the makers thereof admitted to record and ordered to be registered. Notes for RHODA EDWARDS: From: "Steve and Barb Smith" <bgood@newageinter.net> To: "Jon ThunderChild" <sprtbear@wpe.com>, <TNCLAIBO-L@rootsweb.com> Jon, Hi. It appears Rhoda "Rhody" Edwards, and that's how I have it, was the daughter of Laban EDWARDS. She married Thomas Hopper, son of Harmon HOPPER. Her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Edwards, married Jessee HOPPER, who was an older brother of Thomas HOPPER. Their sister Mary EDWARDS married George RIGGLE. They were HEIRS and LEGATEES of Laban EDWARDS in the deed dated November 1, 1819 in CLAIBORNE COunty. This conveyance was to Spencer EDWARDS. Records show Spencer EDWARDS to be the son of William EDWARDS. The deed clearly shows that the conveyance is for three eighths of a 200 acre tract and that they are selling him 75 acres total, 25 acres for each heir. The deed further states that there are a total of eight parts, taking to mean eight heirs, and that Spencer Edwards, by buying this 75 acres will now divide the previous 200 acres with his brother, Hirum EDWARDS into two nearly equal parts, meaning I suppose, that Hirum already owned 100 acres of it and Spencer Edwards already owned 25 acres of it. Anyway, the unfortunate thing is that the relationship of Spencer Edwards to the other three heirs of Laban EDWARDS is not given. Hope this helps. MELVINA6 FORD (MARY ANN5 HOPPER, THOMAS4, SARAH3 COLE, JOHN2, JAMES1) was born September 1850 in Clairborne Co. TN, and died Abt in Pulaski Co. KY. She married JACOB L. MINTON December 25, 1871 in Pulaski Co. KY, son of JAMES MINTON and ELEANOR HERRELL. He was born 1850 in Tazewell, Clairborne Co. TN, and died June 04, 1917 in Ferguson, Pulaski Co. KY. Notes for MELVINA FORD: Melvina is said to have died in house fire with a Grandfather. It is said that the Grandfather was Elijah T. Ford. House fire started when she threw wood into fire place quickly so as to answer call from Elijah to come upstairs. It is said that she threw a baby out the window to save it's life. Possible, that child was Brazilia Minton. Wayne Co. KY Census 1880 X3611/24 Monticello -Prec. # 1 - page 117 J.L. Minton farmer -TN-TN-TN Melvina wife -TN-TN-TN Sarah L. 5 - dau KY Julia A. 2 - dau KY Eligah L. 2/12- son KY Some info from Bud at lipscomb_ca@ .com Family tradition says she perished at 39 years of age due to injuries received when she either jumped of fell from the second floor window of a house afire in 1889 near Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky. It is generally thought in the family that her father, who was sick abed in an upstairs room, perished in the fire. Melvina is supposed to have hastened upstairs in response to his summons, and to have hastily tossed some wood on

24 the fire in a downstairs fireplace - somehow a kerosene lantern also makes its way into the tale. Some versions of the tale also have her gone to the window with a baby (presumably either Brazilia or Mary) and tossing the child down into the arms of someone or other below the window. She was able to get her father as far as the window, whereupon he fell backward into the flames and perished; she either jumped or fell from the second floor window. Melvina's husband Jacob "Jake" Minton subsequently remarried at least a few years later to Polly Shelton. She, for some reason, never seems to have accepted any responsibility for rearing the children, indeed having young Brazilia and Mary both committed to the Lakewood Asylum, where they spent the remainder of their lives - her daughter [my grandmother Sciota (Minton)Lipscomb] remarked on occasion of a visit to them in 1917 that there was not a thing wrong with either of them ever, and they should not have been sent to that place.
