4 MY PERFECT DAY IN NEW YORK CITY I love travelling and I have decided to spend a few days in New York. Each day in the Big Apple should be perfect. I am staying at a friend s flat at the corner of 8th street and 1st avenue within walking distance of Tompkins Square Park. My perfect day starts at 9 a.m, I have pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast and I leave the flat at about 9.30 a.m. My first visit of the day will be the Guggenheim Museum ; I am so keen on its magnificent and quite original architecture. This building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in the fifties. I have always dreamt of taking its spiral ramp to reach the top floor of the museum. I have to admit that I am actually more interested in its architecture than in art itself but the contemporary art collection it houses is just as amazing. I am a great fan of Vasily Kandinsky and I am dying to see composition 8. ( cf picture powerpoint) In order to get to the museum in no time I take subway line number 6 at Astor Place and get off on Lexington Avenue at the corner of 86th. After 2 hours at the museum I decide to have lunch in Central Park so I buy a hot dog and a can of 4

5 coke and stroll about the park. There are two things I need to see: Strawberry Fields in memory of John Lennon and the characters from Lewis Carroll s Alice in Wonderland. I could spend my entire day in the park but my urge for shopping is overwhelming. So I am on my way to Macy s flagship store, one of the most famous shops in New York Macy's is a U.S. chain of mid- to high-range department stores. the chain competes with Belk, Bon-Ton, Dillard's, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. It is the equivalent of your French Nouvelles Galeries. I buy several items of clothes and some brand new sunglasses. It has produced the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City since 1924, and sponsored the City's annual Fourth of July fireworks display since 1976 On my way out I pass Grand Central Station; this building is definitely worth noticing; this beaux art style building was completed in I need to hurry now because the sun will go down in one hour and I have tickets to go to the top of the Empire State building. Some friends told me it was the best moment of the day to go but it is crowded as a result. This way you can enjoy 3 different sights of the city: during daytime, at sunset and at night with all the lights on. It is just magical! I am starving now and I have spotted a little restaurant in Greenwich village on 331 West street and 4ths Street and a lot of regulars go there to enjoy yummy hamburgers. That will be my treat tonight. 5
