Scruggs Story *See Tammer Jerry Gus Denny Sr. Stories The Cookeville Citizen Salutes: Mrs. Joe Maddux Enjoys Living Along, Gets Much Pleasure From Flower Garden Mrs. Joe Maddux of Baxter, who enjoys living alone so she can do as she pleases, celebrated her 88 th birthday February 7 with her family and relatives. She does her own work except her only son Willard Maddux comes to her home every morning and makes her fire. Mrs. Maddux was born and raised in Gordonsville, but moved to Baxter after her husband passed away four years ago following a long illness. After consultation my son and grandchildren decided to bring me to their house, but I wouldn t have it any other way but to live alone, she said. They bring me my supper a lot of times. Flowers are a great enjoyment to Mrs. Maddux and in the summer she enjoys working in her flower garden. She recalled having the prettiest garden in Rock Springs Community. During the winter months she spends much of her time sleeping. My family laughs about my bed always being messed up, she said. She also listens to the radio, but television hurts her eyes. Good health has been her fortune except for an accident which blinded her in one eye. She was at her sisters leaning back in a chair which tipped over causing her to fall and hit the back of her head. Mrs. Maddux recalled cooking for many pastors and church people during her earlier life. I cooked for 20 people one time after an ordinary service, she said. One preacher commented he enjoyed going where he knew he was no trouble. She is one of six children of the late Bob and Delia Scruggs. Two sisters and one brother, Mrs. W. C. Fuqua, Nashville; Mrs. Calvin McDonald, Murfreesboro; Will Scruggs, Gordonsville are still living. She has three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Maddux and her husband, Joe, lived with her parents the early part of their married life and then moved to a farm of their own. She raised chickens and made a garden in addition to her regular household chores. She recollected how she used to ride horseback and how she would like to ride now if she were young again.

2 Mrs. Maddux like to go back to Rock Springs Community to visit her old friends and be where she lived so many years. Baxter just isn t like it was at home in Rock Springs Community, she added. She is a member of the Methodist Church and was active in the church until the last few years. WINTER ROSES: Mrs. Joe Maddux, Baxter, holds a pot of roses which she hopes to plant outside before long. She celebrated her 88 th birthday February 7, but she still enjoys working in her flowers.
