1 Hi! We're reading Paddle to the Sea by Holling C. Holling this year with our American History studies, and I wanted to flesh things out a little bit with some notebooking. The first page (page 2) is a map of the northeast part of the United States. It was difficult for me to find a map of the region I wanted, so the Canada portion on this map is sparse. Since Paddle to the Sea starts in Canada, I want to make sure we learn about Canada as well, so you'll have to sketch in some of the provinces there. You or your child will have to sketch in some of the lakes and rivers by using the map at the back of the book. Directions on what to map and when to map it are on page 3. Encourage creativity and precise coloring when mapping. Shade in lightly, perhaps stressing darker colors on the outline of each mapping activity and shading the color lighter as you get to the center. Make a key using different colors. I've tried to guide you in what colors to use to keep things all straight, but feel free to do whatever pleases you! Some assignnments will require extra research. I've tried to provide links (though these often go dead), but the questions are vague enough to be able to use any number of resources. Get your kids researching! There is copywork, mapping, sketching, writing (or narration/copywork; whatever you're up to). Some assignments are wide open and others have been directed more precisely. There are some 3D components in this set of notebook pages as well. Just follow the directions and paste onto your notebook page as directed. I've tried to do a lot of different ways to keep the interest level high. Just pick and choose your favorites. I did not include every single location in the book in the mapping exercises, only the major cities, lakes, and rivers. Please add them in as you come upon them in your reading if you wish. Visit me at my blog I've got a lot of free printables, hopefully some to suit you. If you would like to share this, please don't share the PDF directly, but direct them to my blog. You are free to use these for your family, but please don't alter or share the PDF directly on your site. Link away to my blog if you wish! :) Julie 1 For education only. Not for sale. 3 Use the map at beginning of this document throughout the whole book, carefully and neatly adding in the following items. I have noted the chapter in which the labeling should be done. The map at the end of the book is very helpful for locating these landmarks. Chapter 2 - Label/color blue Lake Nipigon. You will have to sketch this in. Draw little log cabin on east side, and draw snow-capped mountains around lake. Use map at end of book to help you find and draw this lake. Use the same blue color for all lakes, and label it in key. Chapter 8 - Label/color Lake Superior blue and the town Isle Royal. Use a dot for the town of Isle Royal in the key. Draw a tiny red sawmill with logs around it on west side of Lake Nipigon. Label the sawmill in key so we know what it is. Chapter 9 - Label Thunder Bay, shading blue as necessary. Draw grain elevators on map and label in key. Chapter 11 - Color/label Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan different colors. Label their capitals with a star. Place star in key and label "Capital." Label cities/towns of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconson with dot. Chapter 12 - Sketch in the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior (use map at end of book to help) and label them. Sketch as much of Ontario, Canada on map as possible, color any color you wish, and label using map at end of book to help. Chapter 14 - Use map at end of book to draw a small shipwreck where Paddle-to-the-Sea wrecked. Chapter 17 - Color/label Lake Michigan with blue. Color/label Illinois with it's capital, Springfield, as a star. Also label Chicago with a dot for city. Label/color Indiana any color you wish and label it's capital (Indianapolis) with a star. Chapter 20 - Color/label Lake St. Claire and Lake Huron blue. Chapter 21 - Color/label Lake Erie in shades of blue as described above. Color/label Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, along with their capitals as stars. Chapter 22 - Color and label Niagra Falls. Draw a tiny picture of Niagra Falls and paste on map. Chapter 23 - Label Lake Ontario in shades of blue. Chapter 24 - Sketch St. Lawrence River, Lake Champlain, and Quebec on map using map at end of book to help. Label and shade in all of these places. Label Montreal with dot and Ottawa with star in Quebec. Chapter 25 - Label Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine with their capitals as stars. Label New York City, New York, Washington D.C. and the shade the Atlantic Ocean blue. Color/label New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island with their capitals. 3 For education only.
