Summer jus flashed pas leaving only memories, mos of hem good: visis and expediions wih grandchildren, quil rereas wih friends, long sunny days wih specacular sunses, guild quil shows ha revealed friends alens and hard work Perhaps he bes summer memory for many of us is he road rip. Road rippers may have a desinaion in mind, or hey may jus wander seeing pars of our vas counry. Prairie people seek he ocean; coasal people head o he mounains; easerners explore he wonders of he wes. We ve ofen heard he phrases, Half he fun is geing here, and I s he journey, no he desinaion. Personally, his summer embodied his ruh. A rade show in Vancouver was a worhwhile desinaion. I learned new echniques, found new producs, sewed new projecs, made new conacs and horoughly enjoyed he hospialiy of he rade show sponsors and he ambience of he Vancouver-Vicoria areas. (A plus was he opporuniy o visi grandchildren and heir parens). The oher side of he coin was he rip iself. Our roue, somewha o my husband s discomfor, len iself o sops a several paricipaing Row by Row quil shops. In fac, a map of our exac roue would have a non-quiler scraching his head and concluding we mus have been los, which was no a all he siuaion. Wih a copy of Counry Regiser in one hand and our GPS in he oher, I knew exacly where we were going o he nex Row by Row quil shop, of course! Wha a variey of paerns here was. Many included colour phoos and explici insrucions packaged aracively and colourfully. Some shop owners had gone so far as o hire professional designers, and had wrien deailed direcions hemselves. A few were less deailed. One in paricular sands ou a small coloured phoo aached o a few pages of copyrighed ouline figures aken from he inerne. No insrucion of any kind -- fabric requiremens, mehods or dimensions was provided. This mus have been confusing o beginning quilers, and almos cerainly no wha he Row by Row originaors inended. However, his one poorly-execued paern was cerainly he excepion. Since here were lierally hundreds, if no housands, of good Row by Row paerns available one or wo unusable or unsuiable paerns were mere blips in he grand scheme of hings. Overall, he Row by Row experience added o he summer enjoymen of hundreds of ravelling quilers, and many of us hope i will be repeaed someime in he fuure. Auumn Thoughs Upon Auld Lang Syne by Keri Habben I ofen find myself somewha reflecive wih he naural shif of seasons. In lae winer I begin o wach he garden and he rees for he firs signs of awakenings. I savor planing he flowers and ending hem so ha hey will be healhy and full during summer. Then, of course, gradually he lush abundance dwindles. The leaves become a colorful esimony o auumn s rue message. Wih every bi of color we are compelled o reasure he momen, o sudy he inense beauy, knowing ha all oo soon he hues will fade. Those once new leaves shall reurn o he earh once more. As auumn arrives i always srikes me how quickly he year has slipped by. Therefore, i did no surprise me ha, as I was in he kichen early one morning, I found myself sofly singing a languid, almos spiriual version of Auld Lang Syne, sopping a some of he lyrics in paricular. I searched he Inerne for he words and hisory of he song. On New Years Eve, I prefer o quiely be wih hose I love and who love me. The ball drops in Times Square and he clock icks down. We remember he recen and far pas and we graefully welcome he coming year. Of course, wha acually happens is simply anoher end o one nigh and he beginning of he nex day, as has been for all he ones before and hose ye o be. Which brings me o he line I wisfully paused upon: We ll ake a cup of kindness ye. I suddenly realized ha all of he oher words are subjecive and pas ense, bu his phrase looks hopefully o he fuure. I ve also been pondering kindness, paricularly for some monhs. Las auumn fosered roos ha led ino a winer of uncerainy. Ulimaely spring offered is precious rebirh and became a summer of blessedly ordinary days. Throughou hese seasons, my moher and I were he recipiens of many acs of kindness wih unending love and friendship, all of which we are exremely graeful for. In he bes and wors of imes (and every one in beween), we ry o be kind. I akes so lile effor and is refreshing o look beyond oneself o ruly see hose around us. I ve been noicing how ofen I am a par of or winess o ohers making his world a beer place simply by being kind. I come away hankful for he goodness ha ye breahes in his world of ours. We are ofen oo indignan, readily prepared o be angry wih lile cause. We can all grow oo busy o ruly pay aenion o hose around us. No one is immune o all of he negaiviy ha surrounds us. Someimes i is all oo simple o forge ha he beauy of our world is parially creaed collecively by every one of us one momen and one kindness a a ime. Which brings me back o Auld Lang Syne, which ranslaes direcly o Old Long Since. In my research I read verses I ve never heard sung. One lingers in my mind: And here s a hand, my rusy friend! Sanding as all as he older genlemen were siing down, my seven year old son confidenly sruck up a conversaion wih four simple words. All hree smiled back and answered yes. Teague had no seen hese older cousins in wo years, a quarer of his young life. He remembered waching hem play high school baskeball, and he remembered how imporan hey made him feel as a fan. As his moher, I definiely remembered. The wins could have easily lef he field house wih heir senior buddies, bu hey did no. They found us afer he game and even posed for picures. Today heir mohers observed wihou cameras, amused and amazed a he exchange beween hese boys in very differen sages of life. Two college sophomores, a high school freshman and a firs grader were discussing golf. Siing on folding chairs, surrounded by srangers and exended family, hese older boys had made my lile man s day once again. When I caugh up wih my son in he lunch line of our gahering, he gave me a rundown of everyone he had visied wih so far and who he would cach up wih afer his meal of briske and green beans, seasoned wih sal. I know how o sar a conversaion wih anyone, Mom. Indeed he does. Teague has always loved people. He sees he bes in everyone, and he is he mos houghful person I know. Alhough he usually aended afernoon class, one day he was expeced o be a school around 8:00 a.m. for program pracice wih he morning sudens. I believe ha each has a gender and a disinc personaliy. I believe ha he machine chooses is human parner as much as he human parner chooses he machine. How did I come o his srange belief? Many years ago, I decided o replace my aging sewing machine. I aended a large sewing fesival and ried ou many differen brands. I became enamored wih a op-of-he-line, all he bells and whisles, model cosing more han my firs car. I came home wih me. Wha a disaser! Tha machine never did sew well and spen more ime in he repair shop han i did sewing. Tha machine was belligeren, o pu i mildly. She haed me. I finally ended our relaionship by selling her for $25, elling her buyer ha she had been nohing bu rouble o me. When I replaced Belligeren Bey, I was nervous. Wha if I had he same experience wih my new parner? I decided o approach my new machine in a very differen way. I unpacked Bernie, my new Bernina sewing parner and se him on he able. We alked. The conversaion was a bi one-sided bu I old him how excied I was o have him. I described all he beauiful hings we would creae ogeher and promised o respec him and care for him o he bes of my abiliy.
