2 to update your reading glasses. Second, you have to have a steady hand. Beyond that, anyone could do it with enough practice. It is skill that can be developed to an acceptable level of proficiency. President's Message by Charlie Becker Welding - Is It Time You Learned? Have you ever thought about learning to weld? If you can weld, it opens up lots of creative options. Most importantly for me, it has allowed the construction of an aircraft fuselage for much, much less than if I bought it. It has also allowed me to make a DIY lift to move my disabled wife in and out of the bathtub. I've welded up an extension for a dog gate, made coat racks and even a chandelier. So you see, it does not have to used just for aviation stuff; although I would argue that is the highest and best use for welding!. By being a welder, you can unlock your creative side. For many, they think welding is something that they could "never" learn. I believe anyone can learn to weld. There are two physical requirements to welding that, without them, you will fail. First, you need to be able to see a small weld puddle. If you are over 40, that means you may need Our chapter has a unique opportunity coming up to provide our members with hands on TIG Welding training. EAA has recently received 12 brand new TIG welders from Lincoln Electric. These are the latest, state of the art machines designed for the hobbyist market. EAA will be using them for upcoming SportAir Workshops but those are not scheduled until the Fall. In the interim, I volunteered the chapter to assemble all the machines and "test" them. So we have a few months to use the machines for chapter purposes. We already have one in service for welding the Buster fuselage. At our upcoming chapter meeting, I will present the basics of TIG Welding 4130 Aircraft Tubing. For those who would like to take the next step and learn to weld, we will hold follow up training sessions to teach you the basics of how to TIG weld. At the meeting, I'll pass around a sign up sheet for those interested. If you already know how to TIG weld and are willing to assist with the training, please let me know as I'll need helpers. I find welding one of the most enjoyable things to do. It takes my full concentration so, like flying, I'm completely focused on the welding. There is something primal about joining two pieces of metal together. Don't let this wonderful opportunity pass you by! Tailwinds, Charlie Page 2

13 - Shop Talk - With Ramblin s Mixed In by Randy Novak 2nd Time Around The Re-build of a Taylorcraft Part 14 Repairs As We Go Putting Fabric On - Knots!- Continued from Part 13.- Back in A&P school our teacher had indicated that some IA's might not approve a cover job, unless the knots were visible on the exterior - so, a prudent A&P would check with the approving IA first. The Taylorcraft factory used external knots, and so will we for our project. The stitch spacing required on the earlier built up style wing ribs is detailed in Taylorcraft S.B.'s 22 & 30. The tail surface spacing does not seem to have been well documented. Our aircrafts previous cover job used 3.125, then 3.25" thereafter from the rear edge for the horizontal stabilizers, and 2.5 then 4" thereafter from the front edge for the rudder and elevators. We will retain the same stitch spacing. Alternative methods of attaching fabric - An STC fabric process, such as Polyfiber, is for the installation of their fabric (glued or sewn seams) and coatings - and typically not how the fabric is mechanically attached to the structure. That type of structural detail falls under the rule of maintaining the aircraft to it's original factory condition. The Polyfiber STC is clear and points this out as well. If we wanted to use some other means than what the factory used, it would be a major alteration that would need to be documented by the approving IA. Most often that type of approval is accomplished by FAA "Field Approval", and is not difficult to obtain, it's just part of the process. It's very likely someone else has already done it - which you can than reference as acceptable data. Type clubs are usually a good source of information for this type of thing. Putting Fabric On - Surface Tapes! Amongst Tcrafters there is some debate on whether the factory used continuous surface tape or individual patches over the empennage stitches. I suspect the factory practice varied over the years, and either is acceptable from an airworthiness perspective. Taping and older aircraft - The Polyfiber manual, and AC B provide quite a bit of information as guidance regarding application of surface tapes - which is usually conservative. If the factory documentation for fabric installation is available (not so with Taylorcraft), then that information can be used to advantage during recover. For example, Stinson had detailed blueprints which showed placement of fabric seams, surface tapes, and patches. This might be important for someone wishing to maintain originality. The exception would be the surface tapes dictated by the fabric STC which cover the structural fabric seams. Putting Fabric On - Fabric Seams! If we were covering the plane with cotton or linen, the permissible fabric seams, whether glued or sewn, would be governed by AC B. Since we are using Polyfiber, an STC'd process, the seam requirements are dictated by the STC. Either glued or sewn seams or a combination of the two are approved, and for our project we'll use what works best for what we are trying to accomplish. Today, many people just use glued seams. Years ago sewing was, I think, much more common than it is today. It was not unusual to find a sewing machine in a shop that maintained fabric covered aircraft. Particularly if the shop maintained a number of aircraft of the same type (like a duster operation), once you had a pattern - fabric envelopes could be turned out in good time. Sewing avoided the need for all the glued seams, saving time. Performance of various sewn seams. About 20 years ago we performed some testing for the FAA. The objective was to evaluate the strength difference between the various approved sewn seams, when using approved polyester fabric. In summary, the fabric seams yielded easily. The only seam that came close to achieving the strength of the fabric was the Folded French Fell seam - and even that one yielded (slipped) quite a bit before failing. All the other seams would permit the fabric threads to simply pull off the edge of the fabric at values well below the fabric strength. NOTE - we were primarily testing for comparative sewn seam strengths in the bare, base fabric only. Glued seams would appear to have an advantage over sewn seams in consideration of the slippage/yielding we observed. We also performed tests with the sewn seams, the base fabric treated with a coat of dope (poly brush), and the required 2" surface tape applied over the top - as it would be installed on an aircraft. With any of those samples the original fabric strength could be achieved. So, it could be interpreted that sewn seams primarily hold the fabric pieces together during the covering process, and the surface tape provides a significant portion of the joint strength when all is completed. Sewn seams, thread twist types. If you do use sewn seams, you are now entering the world of commercial/industrial sewing, and those heavier type of commercial threads come in both left and right hand twist. What is twist? Look at any piece of string and you'll see the cord has a twist to it. If, when held between thumb and forefinger of each hand, it tightens up when twisted to the left - it's a left hand twist. Commercial sewing thread is no different. - Continued in Part 15 - Randy Novak (EAA 57117), A&P/IA of 40 yrs, Homebuilder, EAA Tech Cnslr, Private Pilot, with a 37 yr engineering career - Manager in Product Development & Engineering at Mercury Marine. 15 Bill's Obituary reprinted from Oshkosh Northwestern: Brennand, William William F. "Bill" Brennand, age 92, of Oshkosh, died Tuesday morning, March 14, 2017 at Brookdale Senior Living. He was born on August 20, 1924, the son of Roy and Susan (Murray) Brennand. Bill grew up on a farm that is now the south end of Wittman Regional Airport. As a boy working in the fields, he would watch in fascination as famed air race pilot Steve Wittman would practice racing, zooming around trees for race pylons, never imagining that he would become Wittman's protégé and go on to become a champion air racer himself. Brennand won the National Air Races several times as well as many others, then went on to become an airshow performer with Wittman. After a stint as a corporate pilot flying for a local paper company, Bill opened his own airport near Neenah, which lives on and still bears his name. Bill also spent many happy summers flying to Canada where he loved to fish. As EAA grew in the 1970s Paul Poberezny asked if they could use Bill's private property on Lake Winnebago as a seaplane base. Bill managed the operation for over two decades, and the base continues as one of the busiest seaplane bases in the world during convention week. In the summer of 1970 Bill and some friends embarked on a project that seemed nearly impossible: bring back the wrecked remnants of a Stinson TriMotor from Alaska and restore it to flight. The effort took over a decade, but when completed Bill and his team flew the airplane around the country for years, giving rides to thousands. The airplane is now part of the collection of Kermit Weeks at Fantasy of Flight in Florida. As the decades passed, Bill sold off his airport and aviation interests and spent more time relaxing. As he put it, he never retired, just slowed down a little bit at a time. A longtime member of the EAA Chapter 252 in Oshkosh, Bill's last aviation project was advising fellow chapter members on the configuration and construction of a replica of Buster, the airplane he flew to fame in the National Air Races, for the EAA Aviation Museum. The original Buster is in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Bill is survived by his sister-in-law, Kathaleen (George) Brennand; four nieces, Joanne Pederson Anhalt, Mary Brennand Wegener, Carol (Mike) Pederson Riemer and Eileen Brennand; five nephews, Robert (Carol), Donald (Sandy) and Thomas Pederson, Michael (Teri) and Patrick Brennand; other relatives; special friend Marybeth Jackson, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norbert and George; a sister, Mary Pederson; a brother-in-law, Russell Pederson; a niece, Kathaleen Brennand Zimmerman; and two nephews, Philip Anhalt and Thomas Brennand. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 11 am at the Fiss & Bills Funeral Home at 865 S. Westhaven Drive. Oshkosh, WI Father William Van De Kreeke will officiate. Visitation will be held at funeral home on Tuesday from 9 am until 11 am. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Bill's honor. The family wishes to thank the staff at Brookdale Senior Living for their compassionate care of Bill during the last year of his life. Page 15
