ÍÌËÊ D B R C REGINA DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB NEWS DECEMBER 2003 SEASONS GREETINGS Ken (Kenny) Gee RICHMOND TROPHY WINNER 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, Kenny was born in a village near Canton, China in Shortly after he was born his family fled to Hong Kong to escape from the communists that had taken over China. He arrived in Tisdale, Saskatchewan with his mother in 1960, joining his father who had come to Canada in The English language did not come easy to Ken - he was not allowed to speak or read Chinese at home. He was forced to communicate in English only. In 1972, Ken attended Mt. Royal College, working toward a degree in Leisure Education. However before he could graduate, his first son Kelly was born in His grandfather pulled him out of college and instructed Ken that it was time for him to go to work and look after his family. His first job was a manager for a dining room in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. In 1981 Ken was introduced to the game of bridge by Jack Scowen, the local MLA in Nipawin. He enjoyed the game very much, pursuing it with great passion. Ken moved to Regina in 1983 and joined the Regina Duplicate Bridge Club. Ken became a part time bridge teacher in 1984, and in 1997 gave up his import and export business to devote all of his energy to teaching bridge. Since that time Ken has won the Richmond Trophy for five consecutive years. The Richmond Trophy is awarded annually to the Canadian who wins the most master points that year. In 2001, Ken set a new Canadian record for the most master points won in a year with a total of In 2002 he shattered his own record with a new single year performance of 2020 points. Today Ken is Canada s all-time master point leader with a total of 14,528 points. BOUQUETS The little things make this club what it is; the kindnesses that members do as volunteers help to make the club a place where people feel welcome. It is the people who take the time to say a kind word, or give a hug, or smile when asked to take on a task, or just up and jump right in with a donation who make coming to Bridge fun. There are no paid positions in this club (well, other than directors and teachers, whose earnings won t give them a sunny holiday!), so pretty well all that you experience here is due to Page 1 someone making the time to get involved and give what they can. Bouquets are what we can offer to members a little formal recognition. I hope that members will consider using this feature of our newsletter to give out some thanks to someone who makes a positive difference in this club. A little thank you goes a long way! A bouquet and round of applause to those who decorated the club for December. The tree and many of the decorations are Dow Cooney s contribution. The garlands are courtesy of Gladys Foster and Irene Huber. Many thanks to Lois Walker, Mavis Orpen, Irene, and Dow for donating the time it took to decorate. Thank you for making the club look festive! Inside... 2 Editorial Putting together this newsletter has, again, been a task that takes time. I would like to thank those who have submitted articles to this newsletter and hope that more members will do so in the future. I must also thank Janice Anderson for her donations of time and expertise in publishing this edition. The cost per newsletter to the club is about $150. Our aim in publishing this newsletter is to inform members of coming events and promote our club to those who are current or lapsed members. We also encourage members to pass this newsletter (or our web address to others who might be interested in learning to play duplicate bridge. This newsletter is one aspect of the work that the Publicity and Public Relations committee conducts. Another task has been reorganizing the wall space at the club. We hope that the picture re-organization and newly labelled bulletin boards meet with your approval. Please note the new area featuring Ken Gee. We acknowledge that there may be room for future improvements please speak to Dow Cooney. Another aspect of club promotion is our website. James Dulmage is the member who maintains the website and sends out announcements. John Quesnel originally set up this site and our committee is indebted to him for this foundation. It, too, is being revised and, if you would like to help by updating any of the information found on it, please contact us through the website. Erin Anderson and I round out this committee. Please contact any of us if you have an idea for promoting our club, and thanks to those who have already done so. Implementing ideas is sometimes a slow process, but we are working on it! Take care, and may your December celebrations be enjoyable. - Pat Harlton, on behalf of PR and Promotions committee Club Manager s Corner - by Janice Anderson CALLING THE DIRECTOR Call the who...? The Director! It s okay to call the director. If fact, if you don t, you may lose your right to call him later if you are damaged. The director is the one who sold you an entry and passed out the boards. The director is the one who organized the players and the boards so that everything runs smoothly at the right time, the right speed and the right direction. The director is the one you need help from if and when an irregularity happens at your table. The director gives rulings pertaining to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. In order for the conditions of the game to be fair, everyone has to follow the same rules. The director is familiar with these rules and is responsible for seeing that they are correctly applied. The director is also the one who calls the rounds when it is time for you to meet your new opponents. The director puts the results of each board into the computer and posts the computer print-out of results after each session. Calling the Director When you need a director, raise your hand and call out Director, please -- loudly enough for him to hear but not so loudly that it disturbs the other players. When the Director arrives at your table, he will listen to what happened and explain to the players the ruling that pertains to the irregularity. Some rulings have several options so if you don t understand them fully, don t hesitate to ask for them to be repeated. Since the conditions at each table must be duplicated as much as possible, all the players must adhere to the same set of rules. The Director s main objective is to make the game as fair as possible for all the players involved, while ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable time. Irregularities that may happen at your table for which you must call the director are: - a lead out of turn - an insufficient bid - a revoke - a card missing from a hand - a bid or pass out of turn - failure to Alert an artificial bid - changes of call - disagreements of tricks won - claims with trumps outstanding or disputed claims - bidding errors, etc. The Director is your friend. Do not hesitate to call him or her. In fact, if you don t call the Director, you may have lost the right to call him later when you discover you have been damaged. Above all, if you do not call the director when something irregular occurs at your table, do not complain about what happened to others after the game. An irregularity can affect the overall results of the game so when you call the director you are protecting all players in the game!!! Don t be shy - call the director whenever something irregular happens - the director is your friend and wants to make the game fair and enjoyable for all!! ZERO TOLERANCE Be cool! Bridge is fun. The ACBL Board of Directors and Management are committed to improving acceptable player behaviour at all times. In accordance with Laws 74, 80F, 81C4, 90A, 91, and 92A (Laws of Duplicate Bridge) the following policy outlines what is expected of all players in ACBL sponsored events, as well as in the playing area before and after each session. The Regina DBC is also dedicated to improving playing Page 2

conditions for all our players and we support the Zero Tolerance policy. The ultimate purpose of the Z-T policy is to create a much more pleasant atmosphere in our bridge games. We are attempting to eradicate unacceptable behaviour in order to make the game of bridge more enjoyable for all. Below are some examples of commendable behaviour, which, while not required, will significantly contribute to the improved atmosphere: - Being a good 'host' or 'guest' at the table. - Greeting others in a friendly manner. - Praising the bidding and/or play of the opponents - Having two clearly completed convention cards readily available to the opponents (This one is a regulation, not just a nicety) The following list are some examples of behaviour which will not be tolerated: Badgering, rudeness, insinuations, intimidation, profanity, threats, or violence. - Negative comments concerning opponents' or partner's play or bidding. - Constant and gratuitous lessons and analyses at the table. - Loud and disruptive arguing with a director's ruling. If a player at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, the director should be called immediately. Annoying behaviour, embarrassing remarks, or any other conduct which might interfere with the enjoyment of the game is specifically prohibited by Law 74A. Law 91A gives the director the authority to assess disciplinary penalties. The following procedures have been given to the directors for implementation. - The director, when called, shall make an assessment of the situation. If it is established that there was unacceptable behaviour, an immediate ¼ board disciplinary penalty (3 IMP in team games) shall be assigned to all offenders. This may involve any one or all four players at the table irrespective of who initiated the unacceptable behaviour. If both members of a partnership are guilty, the penalties are additive (¼ board EACH = ½ board!). The Board of Directors strongly believes that assignment of disciplinary penalties will improve the overall behaviour at our tournaments. If it is determined that a second offense has occurred in the same event, then the offender(s) shall be ejected from future competition in that event. An offender removed from an event shall be deemed to have not played in the event, no masterpoints will be awarded and no refunds will be made. In the case of a serious offense and in the case of multiple offenses (three) during a tournament, a disciplinary committee may be convened to determine whether the offender(s) should be allowed to play in other events at the tournament and/or whether additional sanctions may be appropriate. Warnings are strongly discouraged and will be given only when there is no clear violation or in cases where the facts cannot be determined. Offenders are to receive immediate penalties. Regardless of who may have initiated unacceptable behaviour, ALL offenses are punishable. Retaliatory behaviour is a punishable offense. Frivolous accusations will also be considered as offenses under this policy. In accordance with the Laws of Duplicate Bridge, a director's decision to impose a penalty is final; however, all such decisions may be appealed. An appeals committee may not overturn the director's decision, but could recommend that the director reconsider the imposition of a penalty. It should be noted that the committee may feel that the penalty assessed was not severe enough and may refer the matter to a disciplinary committee. A Zero Tolerance Report Form shall be available for players, at tournaments, to report incidents which occur away from the table; and for directors to document complaints and action taken. The DIC shall provide a summary report of all behavioural penalties to the Tournament Chairman and/or Recorder. Messages from the Game Management Chair We have just completed two successful tournaments, and have received many accolades regarding the hospitality at the sectional. Most of the credit should go to the hospitality chairperson, Lois Walker, and I would like to personally thank her and her assistants for all their hard work. Thank you to all the participants who made the even enjoyable for all. LESSONS The fall lessons, Club Series, Diamond Series and Two-over-One, have concluded. New sessions will begin on the last Sunday in January. Other lessons will be offered depending on interest. Beginner classes will be offered on Friday nights. The format will be a mini-lesson from 6:30 to 7:30 followed by regular play. Please tell your friends about this set of lessons especially those who you think might be looking to make the transition from social bridge to duplicate. Questions about this set of lessons should be directed to Dave Worby, Thanks. -Irene Huber It's not enough to win the tricks that belong to you. Try also for some that belong to the opponents...alfred Sheinwold The real test of a bridgeplayer isn't in keeping out of trouble, but in escaping once he's in...alfred Sheinwold Page 3

DICK S DELPHI A problem came up at the club one Tuesday afternoon. Holding Í Ì Ë Ê K x K A x x Q x x J x x x it seems reasonable to open 1D. With opponents passing throughout (an oddity in itself these days!!) the bidding proceeds with partner bidding 2D. After only a moment of foggy thought you remember to alert it as an inverted minor. What is your next call? This seems to be the problem. You are a NT specialist. After all partner nearly always stops the suit that you can t. I would recommend a different approach which may avoid the agony of watching the opps take the first 5 or 6 tricks. Bid your stoppers up the line. Therefore bid 2S. Pard bids 3C. I think you should try 3D now to confirm the real diamonds and to reinforce your fear of the heart suit. Pard now raises to 4D. Should you try 5D? Think about pard s hand. They don t have hearts (or they would have bid NT). They have more than a minimum 2D bid, or they would have passed 3D. Thus partner s hand must have points in spades, clubs and diamonds. Try 5D - it is legal to play 5 of a minor when you have 11 tricks! Partner s Hand Í Ì Ë Ê A 10 A K x x x Q x x x x x The joy of success and a near top!! Make sure to submit your questions to DICK S DELPHI - the oracle will do his best. rgand@sasktel.net Master - New-comer - by Arnie Lind Invitational games (like our Wednesday and Saturday evening games) are good news and bad news. The good news is that they get new-comers to play more; the bad news is that they cause new-comers to play less. When June and I started playing at the club there were no rookie-master games and no stratified games. You had to learn to swim in the sharks without getting eaten! Now, the good sharks help the little fishes to survive which raises the overall level of club play. First, the good news. There are several reasons why a Master should play with a new-comer. New-comers grow into good players who challenge the Masters evolving from naive guppies to kind sharks like the Masters (and even beat the Masters on occasion). The club membership grows little fishes build confidence and get involved in the life of the club. And, believe it or not, a Master playing with a new-comer has to practise perfect bidding and playing. This sounds easier than it is. The reasons for a new-comer to play with a master are also evident. Kindly nurtured little fish keep coming back for more and progress to a life master more quickly. They, in turn, can bring more new-comers along. What about the bad news? Masters like to show off and prove to the new-comer how smart they are. This is not helpful. Eventually newcomers become knowledgeable, and recall those sharks who focussed on showing off. A Master who constantly berates a novice partner may think that they are teaching when it is obvious to many (small fishes included) that they are not. The result is that the new-comer quits after a while because (s)he is not learning anything. The pond stagnates; the sharks are left alone. Page 4 Now that that is off my chest, here are some hints June and I have followed when playing with beginners: i Play a simple system. Even the Standard American Yellow Card (SAYC) is too complicated for most beginners. i Add conventions slowly, about one a month and only when newcomers ask about them. i Don t discuss every mistake. Pick one or two and, at the end of the evening, illustrate a good learning point. Go slowly; be prepared to be patient as you answer the same question numerous times! (Only someone who trusts you will openly ask questions.) i Don t constantly criticize. Better to say, That was a tough decision and move on. i Don t be afraid to admit that you, too, make mistakes. i Encourage the novice to read, to study and to take courses. i Above all, do your best to make the game FUN for both of you. Like any other sport, New-comers need training, practice, study and coaching. Invitational games can help with all these things. If you are looking for a Master or a Novice and don't know everyone, give June, Irene or Arnie a call and they will suggest a few names of pleasant people you can call John and Mary, married, play as a team. John bids One No Trump. Pass. Mary bids Two NT Pass John, of course, bids three No Trump. Mary puts her hand down not a single point! When questioned by John, Why did you bid? She answered, Well, you always say One No Trump is so hard to make!

ACBL Membership Package Our club is affiliated with the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). While membership in this organization is optional, we do sell memberships for the ACBL at our club. Membership in the ACBL gives you many benefits, including: recording of masterpoints, a monthly bridge magazine and reduced tournament entry fees. To receive a prospective member packet you may contact the ACBL directly. The address is pam.clouse@acbl.org Please mention that you are a player at the Regina Duplicate Bridge Club if you decide to request this package. It is a useful package and may help new players understand the structure of the ACBL and duplicate bridge. SLOW PLAY It is important to remember that bridge is a timed event. As a general rule players are given about 7 minutes a board. This should be more than ample time to complete play. If you are continually finding yourself playing behind schedule you need to try and speed up your game. Here are few ways you can speed up without rushing your play. - make your opening lead before worrying about writing the contract down on your score card - at the end of a hand quickly write your score down and get on to the next board - refrain from discussing a board until you have completed all the boards in a round. - plan your play at the start of a hand - if you are running late hurry to the next table Directors Needed As our club grows, and matures, we need to recruit new directors. The main duty of a director is to promote a pleasant and ethical atmosphere at our club. Directors must also collect fees and answer director calls. This job pays a nominal fee and the occasional free play. So how does one become a director? 1. Be a paid-up member of our club. 2. Decide to become involved (or more involved). 3. Pay a fee of $50.00 (which will be refunded, if you direct, at a rate of $10 per game). 4. Attend two sessions in which the duties of a director are presented. 5. Write a director examination (and keep at it until you pass the test!). If you have taken the seminar in the past you do not need to re-attend all you have to do is write and pass the exam. As Game Management Chair I am asking that members please consider helping us provide more directors so that those who are directing at present do not become played out. You do not have to be a life master, nor do you have to be available each and every week. Please consider becoming a director our club is only as strong as the volunteers who give their time and effort to make playing an enjoyable experience. I am hoping to set up the director seminars early in the New Year and would be glad to answer any questions you may have about becoming involved in our club as a director. Thank you. Irene Huber Monday Niters' Christmas Party - December 1, 2003 The Monday Niters (players with less than 100 points) celebrated the festive season with their 1st annual Christmas Party on December 01, players (12 full tables) attended with Arnie Lind and Irene Huber directing. We enjoyed a wonderful variety of hors d'oeuvres, and Arnie provided both red and white vino! In addition to their other duties, our directors drew names all evening and distributed a myriad of door prizes. As a memento, our group presented Arnie with a framed self caricature (i.e. tennis, bridge, novelist, humorist for Globe & Mail) to hang in his study. Special thanks are due to Irene for her participation and continual support. For a fun and friendly evening of bridge, come out and join us on Monday nights! Submitted by Susie English CARDS If you know of anyone that the club should be sending a card to - get well, sympathy, congratulations, etc. PLEASE call Barb Hogan at Thanks - Club Executive ATTENTION STANDBYS If you cannot be standby when scheduled PLEASE trade with someone else or find a replacement. Your cooperation is needed to make the system work. Thanks - Jill Wellman CLUB MEMBERSHIP Did you renew your membership? Club membership is only $10.00 a year. The club year runs from June 1 - May 31. Players who are not paid up club members are charged an extra $1.00 per session and are not eligible for club awards. Pay your fees to any director when buying your entry. Thank You!! Page 5

Surfing the Net - by Allan Shore My choice of internet use, for this issue, is found at the site. It is very important, when searching for this site, that you use this exact address. When there, you click on "Karen's Bridge Library". When you get to Karen's page, it would be a good idea, to set your bookmark, so you don't have to go through all the hoops, next time. Almost everything you wanted to know about bridge is there. There are topics for "Beginners" from "Basic Bidding" to "Quick Tips". For "Advancing Players" there are subjects concerning "Balancing over 1 - bids" to "Lebensohl". Advanced players will find information on "Strong Jump Shifts" to "Opener's Jump Reverses".
