1 KETTERING HOCKEY CLUB FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER QUIZ NIGHT Quiz night proved to be a huge success as the clubhouse was heaving with 21 teams pitting their wits against Evil Quiz Master Telf The lead fluctuated throughout the contest and the perfectly pitched questions kept everybody interested. The winning team, by one point, included Neil Manley (but we think he had some help from our very good friend of the club Martin Baker!).

2 This team also managed to win the Freddie Flintoff signed photo and ball courtesy of JACAMO, our headline sponsors for the night. Some of us failed to do their Freddie Flintoff homework and paid the price. Worryingly some of the younger people had no idea who he is (a sure sign the rest of us are getting old) Just for reference the young girl in the picture round was Adele and not Shez our Ladies 2 nd team skipper, although Shez thinks she is a better singer - Yeah, right! Thanks to Kate and Telf for hosting the evening and to everyone who turned up to support the event. A magnificent 400 was raised to be split between our Club funds and our two chosen charities, Johnny s Happy Place and Wren Spinney School. We would like to thank all members who support our social events and particularly those who are unable to attend but still purchase tickets. Funds raised help provide benefits for club members such as the free shirt to new members, face masks for our defenders and much more.

3 So what s next??? RACE NIGHT The penultimate social event before the Annual Dinner Dance and Presentation of awards is the RACE NIGHT. Could you or your company sponsor the evening 100 or maybe simply sponsor a race for 20 - Website advertising in the run up and on the night. Big crowd guaranteed. They are guaranteed 5000 for getting this far! It is now down to a public vote, you can vote each day until the end of the voting process. If they come 2 nd or 3 rd, they will win 50,000! If they win the whole thing, they will get 200,000 which will be used for the good of the whole club!!!! The public vote opens at 9am on Monday 5 th February at@ SPREAD THE WORD AND GET VOTING!

5 WHAT HAS THE CLUB EVER DONE FOR YOU? WELL KETTERING GOAL KEEPERS were treated to a fabulous coaching session with JAMIE CACHIA Sunday 28 th January saw Kettering s goal keepers treated to a coaching session with Scotland goalkeeper and National League coach Jamie Cachia. Jaime worked his sessions around the needs of the individual keepers and is an advocate of good technique being the key to success. Jaime showed the keepers some great drills that they will be able to work on themselves and he also had a great coaching style. All the keepers enjoyed the session and hopefully the tips they gained will help them in games. All involved hope to have Jamie back in the future. This is further investment by the club in improving areas that often get left out. Before next season we hope to run a coach education evening so that all our coaching staff are up to speed with the latest coaching methods. The coaching this year appears to be having a positive impact on the pitch and the Club want to make that experience even better.

6 & SHIRT REBATE FOR NEW MEMBERS Kettering Hockey Club have agreed to refund the cost of one playing shirt to all brand new members of the club who have paid their subs and have ordered two playing shirts. This is a really fabulous offer and eligible members will be contacted soon by the executive committee.

7 & FACEMASKS With the safety of players in mind facemasks have been purchased and handed out to the various teams. Defenders have been delighted with the protection they now have when defending penalty corners. & UMPIRE RADIO MICS Thanks to a grant from Northamptonshire County Women s Hockey Association, the club has purchased a set of umpire radio mics with the aim of improving umpire communication skills across the county. The idea is they will be used as a training aid to help new umpires build confidence & STORAGE CONTAINER AT BISHOP STOPFORD SCHOOL It s finally arrived! KHC is now the proud owner of a storage facility next to the pitch at Bishop Stopford school. This will allow teams to use equipment on site without having coaches car boots filled to the brim! & COACHING COURSES Kettering Hockey Club plan to organise coaching development and education training to help all our super coaches and indeed any members of the club interested in going into coaching to get up to date with all the latest techniques and best practice. Watch this space.. Easy fundraising is up to with 49 supporters so far, with a membership of around 250, come on join in and raise much needed funds for your club

8 OVER 75+ TOURNAMENT NEWS from our very own super star BILL GREENWOOD Having previously expressed delight at the thought of 3 days hockey instead of just two, some of the ancients decided that the over 75 tournament should not include other friendlies to sap their energy, so the arrangement for 2018 is to hold the official Regional competition on Friday and Saturday, leaving Sunday for the friendlies. This led to some protests from those who only planned to play for two days that they would miss the buffet However, the arrangement stands and hopefully, most players will want to play on all 3 days, making programming easier. So far it looks as if the over 75 section will include teams from the South, West, East and Midlands plus the over 80 s, one of the LX ladies over 60 s teams and Alliance. Aspirants are a bit slower in confirming their entries. So far we have heard from LX Ladies, Wales over 70 s (possibly with two teams) and we are awaiting replies from Scotland, Netherlands, LX Men and Khalsa. If any fail to respond it will give Kettering Under 14 s a chance to run rings around the old men again, after their impressive performance last year. The feedback from pretty much all those who have participated in the three years to date has been positive, with great praise for the support provided by Kettering Hockey club members not to mention the superb buffet and not least the relief provided by the physios. As always it is the club s support which makes this event possible in the first place, and many players who imagined that Kettering was in the frozen North have discovered their mistake. No doubt there will be a larger group of club members happy to support this event on April 6 th 7 th & 8 th April by helping with refreshments, umpiring or simply cheering the teams and wondering how some of the over 70 s manage to keep going so well. An additional bonus is our second fixture against the England LX Club on February 25 th when Kettering over 50 s will play against the LX over 65 World Cup team, The LX team is in effect England second eleven. 10 CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!! Big news of the season is the wedding of Ollie and Dawn on the beach in Australia over the Christmas break Many congratulations to you both! Challenge Jannika is at it again! By Jan Randle Way back in October evil daughter number three, obviously with one eye on an early inheritance, suggested we run the Cambridge half marathon. To quote Suzie after all it s very flat With my mouth working well in advance of my brain I said Yes of course what a good idea Well, the run takes place on Sunday 4 th March and I have decided to try and get some sponsorship which will be donated to our two chosen charities Johnny s Happy Place and Wren Spinney School. A huge thank you to those who have already promised to sponsor me in the event and here s hoping the rest of you can spare a pound (or two) for two really good causes. I ll be bugging you with sponsor forms during the next few weeks.
