1 A Guide to Reading and Searching Joseph Hooker's Indian Letters This guide is designed to help users read and understand both the original letter and the letter transcript. There are also some tips for searching the letters online. Please be aware that search functionality on the Joseph Hooker Correspondence Website is currently limited. The website is a pilot and we are working on upgrading and improving it. As an additional finding aid a full list of the letters which make up the volume of Indian correspondence can be found in an appendix at the end of this document. Tips for searching the letters Please note the current basic search interface is only a temporary facility provided for the initial pilot phase of the project. A more powerful and user friendly interface will be introduced later this year. Enter search terms into the box provided and then either press Return or click on Search to submit your search. This is free text search. There is no capacity to filter searches. Please ignore the filter by type button which is not currently functional. Letter transcripts are currently not included in searches however summaries of the letters' content (where available) are searched and therefore results may be retrieved from terms matched within these. If no results are retrieved try simplifying your search terms or being less specific about the particular person, place, plant etc. you may be interested in, for example try searching for a surname or genus only. Reading the letters & transcripts Please note that when you select a letter only the first page is initially available to read on the letter record page. To read all the pages of a letter you need to view the PDF attached to the record. In the Download section click the link marked 'DOWNLOAD FULL LETTER' this will open a PDF in a new window in your browser. The PDF contains images of all the letter pages. All letters, with the exception of image only records, also have a full transcript available as a PDF download. Order All transcripts provided should display pages in the correct order for reading, even where this has become confused in the configuration of the manuscript letter. The following explanation is to assist with determining the correct reading order when looking at images of the manuscript letters, provided as PDFs. In the case of letters that have been written in a portrait format this is straightforward The reading order of the pages which make up a landscape format letter is not always easy to follow. This is because many of the letters would have been sent folded but have since been stored

2 (and consequently digitised) unfolded. The page order for most landscape format letters is as illustrated in the diagram below: etc. Transcripts All letters, with the exception of image only records, have a full transcript available as a PDF download. Open the transcript file by clicking on the DOWNLOAD TRANSCRIPT link in the Download section. The PDF displays all text from the original mss, including any text that has been struck through but is still legible. As the website is still in a pilot phase please consider all transcripts as works in progress and refer to the images of the original if in doubt. We welcome people to contribute corrections to the transcripts, though it may be some time before these can be reflected on the website. Interpreting the transcripts [[page number]] :all page numbers are inserted within square brackets at the beginning of the page text. * endnote: all numbers preceded by an asterisk indicate an endnote, further explanation about the text marked will be available as an endnote at the bottom of the transcription. [text in square brackets] indicates an editorial insertion. Editorial insertions are most often provided to clarify an abbreviation by expanding it, to correct any spelling that is so erroneous the meaning might otherwise be unclear, or to correct place names to their modern usage or spelling. NOTE

3 where place names have changed completely rather than just in standardised spelling this may instead be recorded as an endnote. <inferred text> where text has been lost, usually because of damage to the manuscript, it can sometime be inferred from the context, where such an inference has been made this is indicated by placing the text in angle brackets. [sic] following a word indicates that the preceding word has been copied exactly from the letter even though it may appear incorrect or misspelled, this is often used to indicate an archaic spelling has been used in the letter and is not a typographical error in the transcript e.g. shewed[sic]. [?] a question mark in square brackets indicates that the interpretation of the preceding word is uncertain, usually because the handwriting is particularly difficult to decipher, any question marks not in square brackets are transcribed from the manuscript and are not editorial insertions. [signature] this text alongside the signature on a letter indicates that the letter has been signed by the author of the letter i.e. it is not a copy made later in another's hand. Copy letters Some of Hooker's Indian letters only exist in the Kew archive in the form of manuscript copies. These are mostly believed to have been written soon after receipt of the original by Hooker's mother: Lady Maria Hooker or one of his sisters, Maria or Elizabeth. If there is no explicit indication on the letter itself that it is a copy but it is clear from the handwriting or signature that this is the case an endnote will state that the letter is a copy. In the PDF transcript copies can also be identified by the alignment of the date and address, only original letters in the hand of the author are formatted with the standard letter layout with the address aligned right. Letters signed by the original author also have the text [signature] after the valediction to indicate this is a genuine author signature not a copy in another's hand.
