3 Targeting walleye during the hard water season by the Ontario Fishing Guys MANITOULIN While winter certainly as its drawbacks on Manitoulin, ice fishing is the shining beacon for many and allows anglers, young and old, to get outdoors after far too many days cooped up inside. What better way to spend your day than ice fishing and catching a delicious walleye dinner? Avoid the crowds Winter is the great equalizer for anglers. While fishing most lakes during the spring, summer and fall is restricted to the boat owner, ice fishing is an entirely new game. An ice auger, some warm clothes, fishing gear and everyone is on the same playing field. You will always see anglers at the same spot on the lake they gather like seagulls on a discarded French fry so it s easy to find a spot to wet your line. Sure, they catch some fish, and we re not saying don t fish there, but by do- Lake Mindemoya walleye taken on a Northland Buck-Shot in 35 feet of water. ing a bit of research, you will find plenty of fish that aren t as pressured as the highly fished spots. Fish with a game plan Walleye fishermen will tell you that the fish like three distinct areas during the winter. At first ice, they are shallow and feeding aggressively. In February, walleye head to the deeper pockets of the lake with feeding slowing down and by the end of March, they start to make their move to the spawning areas. While this holds true, fishing structure will produce consistent results and up your catch rates, not only in the winter, but year-round. You can repeatedly catch walleye in all four seasons at the same location by fishing rock piles, quick drop-offs and deep pockets with the only change being the presentation. Walleye are notorious nocturnal feeders. Early morning and at sunset is when you will have the most success. Fish what we like to call the twohour window. The two hours following sunrise and the hour before and after sunset. Before heading out, fire up the computer and visit Navonics WebApp. The website is a great resource to get an idea of some possible locations that will hold walleye. Look for deep pockets, fast dropping shoals, points and pinnacles. These areas will all catch fish all year. Navonics WebApp is a completely free website and data contained here is invaluable and will prevent you from randomly drilling holes until you stumble upon the walleye. Keep in mind that not all lakes have been charted yet. Once you are out on the lake, the Navonic Boating App is a must-have for your mobile phone in our books. It s a small investment (about $20) that will pay dividends countless times. You will be able to pinpoint your exact location and drill your holes where you know the fish will most likely be. Time to winterize your boat and small engines by Warren Schlote MANITOULIN As winter approaches, taking care of your seasonal engines is an important task. If you are not mechanically inclined, there are a number of Island businesses that can take on the job and make winterizing your summer tools and toys a breeze before the freeze. For boats, I would definitely have a professional do it if this is their first season. This year we changed a lot of broken blocks from people doing their own stuff, says Brent Leeson, service manager at Harbor Vue Marina in Little Current. In addition to service, his facility offers winter storage for approximately 400 boats, with both indoor and outdoor space available. One of the most important things is to put gas preserver into the fuel system because the gas will go bad over the winter season, says Mr. Leeson. Then, you want to perform general maintenance, such as changing the gear oil, fuel filters, et cetera. It s the same with the engine: drain and winterize the engine or engines and store the boats appropriately. Proper winterizing is also an important task for household small engines that will sit over the winter, such as chainsaws and lawn...continued on page 8 MORE THAN JUST FLOORING Keep warm this winter! 5 Tips to preserving locally-grown herbs this fall by Betty Bardswich MINDEMOYA The Manitoulin Community Fresh Food Initiative (MCFFI) is hosting workshops across Manitoulin facilitated by herbalist and holistic nutrition consultant Danielle Bourgault. Titled Preserve the Harvest, the gatherings are to showcase the use of locally grown herbs to create seasoned salts and infused oils to bump up the flavour of foods. A herbalist is educated and trained in the use of plants to foster healing and counteract and treat illness. Ms. Bourgault was introduced by Kristen Bickell of the Noojmowin Teg Health Centre at the Mindemoya workshop held October 24 at the Missionary Church. Ms. Bickell is the project manager for the fresh food initiative and she also introduced Tom McQuay, who is the steering committee representative for Central Manitoulin, photographer, videographer and web designer Robert Maxwell of Evansville who is developing a website for the MCFFI, and Maya Mielon who provided the meal for the participants. Ms. Mielon s fare consisted of chili made with tomatoes, peppers and Romano beans from her garden as well as tea she had made with mint she grew and dried, organic coffee, zucchini brownies and a baguette she had Tea is just one of the many uses for dried herbs. made that morning. Ms. Bourgault began the workshop by noting that she is working on a clinical herbalist diploma and that her presentation would focus on the drying, preserving and use of culinary herbs. For this she had several plates of dried, locally grown herbs laid out, including thyme, oregano, lemongrass, lavender, tarragon, chives, rosemary and sage. As well, Ms. Bourgault had jars partly filled with honey and herbs such as lavender and thyme. The honey is locally sourced and heated just a bit as too much heat can destroy the herbal benefits of infused honey. Raw honey contains vitamins and minerals as well as enzymes to fight free radicals and, as Ms. Bourgault said, garlic honey is especially good for colds. Ms. Bourgault had handouts for the workshop participants on hand beginning with the harvesting of herbs. She suggested using sharp scissors or pruners, picking healthy new growth, and checking for bugs and dirt. A good idea is to rinse or soak the herbs and then twirl in a salad spinner. She also added that flowers are best to harvest just after opening, to con- sider protocols on how and when to harvest plants and to only harvest what you need. Ms. Bourgault outlined the three methods of drying herbs. These are using a dehydrator, air drying and stove light drying. When using a dehydrator, the lowest setting of 105 F is used for herbs and drying time should be set between two and four hours. At that time any dried herbs can be removed, more fresh ones added, and the time reset. The air drying of herbs, as Ms. Bourgault explained, can take from one to four days depending on humidity. To hang bundles, it is recommended to remove the lower leaves of the plants as they will get crushed in the bundles. Twist ties, elastics, strings and so on can be used to create the bundles and Ms. Bourgault observed that this method of drying works best with herbs with sturdy stems such as lavender, sage and rosemary. Make sure, she spelled out, that there is enough air flow and that the herbs are not too wet. If they are clumped together they can rot and mould. Once the herbs are dry, the leaves can be stripped and stored out of direct sunlight in an airtight container such as mason jars. Ms. Bourgault also reminded her audience that herbs should never be stored above or near a stove or any heat source. The table conversation around the drying of herbs led to Anastasia Eranosova of Tehkummah saying, Basil is hard to dry. It loses its flavour. And colour, Sharon Stephens added. Ms. Eranosova is The Island Gardener and has held seed exchanges for interested gardeners for the past two years and will do so again in Tehkummah in She showed a movie about exchanging seeds at that gathering that was held in the municipal building but will have to move to bigger quarters next year as the number of people attending was so large. Ms. Bourgault agreed with the talk about basil and noted that it, as well as chives and parsley, are better frozen and that herbs can be frozen in ice cube trays. She noted that hardier herbs such as sage, rosemary, oregano, thyme and chilis work better with this method and explained that the ice cube trays should be filled with herbs and then oil poured over them. The third method of drying herbs is to line them on a cookie sheet and leave overnight in the oven with just the stove light on as most stoves lowest temperatures are still too high and will damage the herbs. 7 ...Targeting walleye during the hard water season...continued from page 3 the fish smash your lure while you re holding the rod, knowing that your jigging action enticed it to strike. Using a deadstick approach can work well, but for us, we want to take our fishing fate into our own hands. Jigging allows us to fish aggressively, subtly or a combination of both, depending on how the fish are striking and reacting to the jig. We have three go-to jigs that are used 90 percent of the time. The Northland Buck-Shot, Ra- pala Rippin Rap and the Rapala Rap (shout out to the old blue and silver Little Cleo as well) with the Blue Buck-Shot garnering most of the use. Jigging On the topic of jigging for walleye we get met with the same response: Oh I hate jigging, it does not work, or the I just use a minnow, it is much easier line. Sure, dropping a minnow down the hole is simple, but if you want to up your catch rate you should turn to the art of Our most used walleye jigs. Bottom row is Northland Buck-Shots with Rapala Rippin Rap (Top right) and Rapala Rap (top left). jigging for winter walleye. Try tipping your walleye jig to increase your catch. The tried and proven method of a minnow head works great. We are of the belief that big bait equals big fish so when fishing the big water we will use the whole minnow. Another very useful bait to tip your jig with are Lunkerhunt Wax Worms. They are deadly, and if there are perch in the area we will use these most of the time. Tip each hook with one or two. How to jig The Twitch: The most efficient style that continually produces the highest catch rate. The twitching motion takes full advantage of the ball-bearing in your jigs. Adapt to your surroundings. On mud or rocky bottom, allow the jig to strike bottom stirring up debris. Start with your jig a foot or so off the bottom; Lift the rod up quickly, approximately three feet. Allow the jig to drop downand settle just above The Navonics WebApp and the Navonics Boating app are invaluable resources to help you identify structure that will hold walleye. the bottom (strike the bottom if you know you will not get hooked up); Twitch the rod five or six times by lifting the rod tip a few inches quickly. Let the jig settle for a few seconds, repeat the twitching motion; Rinse and repeat the jig pull. The Double Pull: A solid style for those aggressive days. Once again, depending on the bottom structure, don t be afraid to let your jig hit and settle on the bottom for a second or two. Start with your jig a foot or so off the bottom; Quickly lift the rod three to four feet and allow the jig to free fall back down; Immediately lift the rod one to two feet and allow the jig to freefall back down; Let the jig settle for five to six seconds; Rinse and repeat the jig pull. Mix things up with big- ger and smaller pulls, more and less twitching until you find what works for you. The final piece of advice might be the most important: stay mobile. If you are not catching fish or getting knocks, move the hole to a new spot. Generally, 30 minutes is enough time to know if the spot is going to produce. Good luck, keep your rod bent and save a few for someone else. Dedicated to making your winter a little warmer. 8 Managing diabetes throughout the hectic holiday season MANITOULIN Diabetes management is challenging at the best of times. So many factors influence blood sugar control such as stress, disruption in routine, changes to diet and activity patterns, lack of sleep, acute illness and adherence to medication regimes. With certainty, one can expect to have an even greater challenge managing their health routines over the month-long holiday period with all the extra expectations and events that occur. Registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator Laurel LeConte shares some tips that may help you to maximize your health and enjoyment though this special time of the year. Set realistic expectations of yourself Holidays can be a stressful time for many. Feelings of stress increase hormone levels which can independently elevate blood sugars. Feelings of stress also lead to overeating for many. Deciding what your individual priorities are, and sticking to those, can help reduce the pressure and expectations you get involved in activities or opportunities to be around other people. Depending on your individual circumstances this could mean attending a church function, attending an AA meeting, joining a fitness program, volunteering with a service club, or simply calling an old friend and making a plan to re-connect. Most groups are welcoming and looking for new members. The holidays can be a difficult time to maintain a healthy diet. put on yourself. For some, this may mean sticking to a budget, reducing expenditures on gifts and communicating this plan to loved ones in advance. For others, this may mean declining invitations and reducing participation to a manageable level of holiday events. Only you can decide what your priorities are in an effort to limit holiday related pressure. Take action to avoid loneliness On the flip side to having too many holiday events to squeeze in are those who find the holiday period a lonely time. Research shows that loneliness can be associated with depression, having a negative impact on one s ability to participate in all the selfcare behaviours associated with diabetes management. Even if it has been some time since you have participated, reach out and try to MINDEMOYA COME CHECK OUT OUR GIFTWARE SELECTION LADIES 15% OFF NIGHT EVERYTHING WEDNESDAY, NOV. 14 Stay warm this winter! Don t deprive yourself of food or enjoyment One of the great things about the holidays are all the special foods we get to enjoy. However, we know that eating less or more than usual affects blood sugar control negatively. Many people don t acknowledge that deprivation usually leads to bingeing. Trying too hard to avoid higher sugar and fat foods around the holidays often leads to overeating in private and feelings of guilt and shame, leading to stress and more overeating. Try to eat regular balanced meals and give yourself permission to enjoy food. Eating one or two Christmas cookies that you actually enjoy is better for your health and wellbeing than eating seven of a reduced sugar and fat version that you don t enjoy. Plan activities with friends and family that don t revolve around food Eating is one of life s pleasures, however it shouldn t be our only pleasure in life. Many people with diabetes feel judged about what they eat in social settings. In an effort to avoid overeating or more pressure from well-meaning friends and family, consider plan- ning holiday events that don t centre on food. This could include ideas like a card making party, sliding or skating, carolling, or simply a walk to enjoy the Christmas lights. Look for opportunities to keep active Keeping physically activity for general health and mobility is important for everyone. Beneficial effects of keeping active can be even more profound in those with diabetes wishing to balance blood sugar levels. There are opportunities to keep active on Manitoulin throughout the winter if you look for them. Some people purchase warm clothing and tracks for their winter boots, resuming their outdoor walking routines year-round. If you don t feel safe walking...continued on page 10...Time to winterize your boat...continued from page 4 mowers. Norman Demers of Manitoulin Small Engine and Marine has been working on engines for nearly 40 years. Before letting a small engine sit, Mr. Demers says it is important to fill the tank with premium fuel and add a conditioner, then run the engine briefly so the conditioned fuel circulates through the system. Fogging the engine is a good idea, says Mr. Demers. In two strokes, (fogging oil) is sprayed through the carburetor and it lubricates the internal components. In a four stroke, manufacturers often suggest taking the spark plugs out, putting a tablespoon of oil in the cylinder and cranking it over a couple of times. For most small engines, that s about it. It s got good, clean fuel in it now and the reason for topping up the tank is so you don t get condensation, says Mr. Demers. He adds that engines that have any sort of water reservoirs like a water jacket on an inboard/outboard should be fully drained or even replaced with straight antifreeze to prevent winter damage. Winterizing is not an impossibly difficult job, nor is it something that should be taken lightly. Mr. Demers and Mr. Leeson both agree that while mechanically-inclined people could take on the task, for those who are unsure about their skills it may be best to use the services of a professional. The costs to repair damage from improper winterization can be as high as $20,000 for a boat, according to Nicholas Insurance of York, Pennsylvania. Compared with the cost of hiring a professional for the job, which could run from $50 to a few hundred dollars, winterization is a sound investment in making your tools and toys last for years to come. We re already starting to see some cool weather and it s important to winterize before things freeze, says Mr. Demers. An appointment is the best way to do it during this busy time. She said to wait one week, strain the oil out using cheesecloth or a small sieve and then refrigerate. Carol Lee also noted that the flowers of chives are a great herb to use for infusion. Seasoning salt was another product that the participants made and took home. The ratio for this is a 1/2 cup of salt with a 1/4 cup of herbs. Fresh herbs would be three loosely packed cups. 10 Surprising facts about shovelling snow over age 50 by Michael Erskine MANITOULIN If you are a healthy over-50 and your spouse is encouraging you to step outside with a shovel in your hand following a winter snowfall, they may actually have your best interest at heart. Despite the common folklore admonition that those over 50 should never shovel snow due to an increased risk of heart attack in the elderly, a chat with your physician will quickly rip that excuse from your household chore lexicon. It simply isn t true and, in fact, avoiding exercise as you grow older can actually lead to a self-fulfilling frailty in the elderly. That isn t to say that caution shouldn t be exercised when heading out into the cold to shovel away winter s bounty or any other cold weather chores. While it is true that, on average, in the US some 12,000 people a year are injured and 100 die as a result of shoveling snow, there is no reason for a healthy adult over the age of 50 to hang up their shovels just yet. You shouldn t be talking about over-50, that s ageist, laughed Dr. Stephen Cooper, chief of staff at the Manitoulin Health Centre. It s not your chronological age that is a factor so much as your biological age. Dr. Cooper went on to explain that if a person has a heart issue, or has poor balance and presents a risk of a fall, then there can be negative health consequences, but a healthy 55-year-old, 65-year-old or even 75-year-old can shovel snow just fine. The thing is that you really need to talk to your doctor or health practitioner about where your personal health lies, he said. For instance, if you have balance issues any activity that involves bending and twisting on a slippery surface will present a greater opportunity to be injured from a fall and, if you have a heart condition, any activity that will present a sud- den increase of blood pressure can be dangerous. But if you are 60 or 70 years old it is not an issue. In fact, Dr. Cooper notes that exercise is an important determinate of health at any age. We don t like to discourage exercise in the elderly, he said. That reduction can lead to a self-fulfilling reduction of activity. A self-fulfilling frailty that could have been avoided can ensue if you start to eschew all exercise as you get older. What s far more important is to be aware of the signs of a heart attack, said Dr. Cooper. Those can come any time, with any sort of activity. The doctor advises to be aware of the warning signs. If a crushing angina, chest pain, is happening, or if you are experiencing heavy sweating and nausea, you should stop at once and seek medical attention. We have medicines today that can reduce the damage if they are applied quickly. THE PAPER YOU LOVE available whenever you need it! A sensible approach to exercise at any age is important, particularly if you are heading out into a bitter cold to do any heavy type of exertion. Warming up is important. As with any exercise, you should begin with a five-to-10-minute warm-up try walking or marching in place to warm up their body. Warming up is not about body temperature. It is using slow, gentle exercise to increase blood flow and flexibility to those mus- cles and joints you will soon be putting to work. It also allows the heart rate to increase slowly, thereby avoiding a sudden strain. Doing a few arm movements and stretches for back, chest and shoulder muscles will help warm up the upper body and avoid muscle tears or dislocations. Be sure to dress warmly enough and cover your head, face and hands when outside for prolonged periods of time. If you become overheated, take a break from shovelling maybe lose a layer. Wear waterproof boots to protect your feet from the cold as well as keep them dry. Choose a non-skid pair of boots to help prevent falls on slick snow or hidden ice. Choose a smaller shovel because a shovel full of snow can weigh up to 15 pounds. A smaller shovel results in a lighter load, and that can reduce the risk of injury. As with any activity it is important to stay well hydrated take a few sips after every 15 minutes or so. Another winning strategy is to not wait until the snow stops falling get stuck in when the snow level reaches about two inches and just break it up into a couple of outings. It is also a good idea to pop back indoors after 20 to 30 minutes and start again after you have had a good rest. As with any exercise that involves lifting, use your legs not your back to lift and consider pushing instead of lifting where possible. Let you legs do the work, not your back. Finally, avoid caffeine and nicotine before shoveling, as those drugs increase heart rates and constrict blood vessels, which in turn puts more strain on the heart. So have a chat with your health professional, dust off that (appropriately sized) shovel and get stuck in against Old Man Winter s worst.

11 Tips for coping with fewer hours of daylight this winter MANITOULIN Daylight saving time comes to an end each fall, at a time when the hours of available sunlight already are beginning to decline. Some people are more accustomed to darkness than others. Norwegians, Swedes and people living in Alaska and the upper reaches of Canada near or above the Arctic Circle may go through a period when winters can be especially dark. Although much of the rest of North America doesn t experience such profound periods of darkness, when the darkness of fall and winter arrives, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. Borrowing some of the coping mechanisms relied on in northern latitudes can help many people to see the dark in a different light. Be aware of SAD. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a type of depression that s related to changes in seasons, beginning and ending at about the same times each year. Symptoms tend to start in the fall and continue into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel moody. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to severe problems if left untreated. Light treatment, talk therapy and medication can help people who are susceptible to SAD. Make daylight hours count. Spend time outdoors while the sun is bright in the sky. Make an effort to switch your schedule if work interferes with getting outdoors, even if all that can be managed is an outdoor walk at lunch. Sit by a bright window and soak up rays whenever possible. Celebrate winter activi- ties. Go skiing, snowboarding, outdoor ice skating or snowshoeing. Look forward to winter for what can be done, rather than what can t. Socialize more often. Instead of holing up indoors alone, frequent the places that become indoor gathering spots for locals. These can include coffee houses, breweries, restaurants or even the local church. Plan more social occasions with friends and families so everyone can collectively shoo away the winter blues. Exercise more. Use the darker hours as an excuse to exercise, be it at the gym or outside. The Mayo Clinic says that exercise and other types of physical activity can relieve anxiety and depression, lifting an individual s mood as a result. Light a fire. Set the kindling ablaze in a fire pit, fireplace or woodburning stove, or just light a handful of candles. Flames can be soothing and less harsh on the eyes than artificial light. Fall and winter darkness does not have to send a person into the doldrums if they embrace the right attitude. Many people feel the effects of waning daylight hours. photo by Warren Schlote Winning Wild Game Cook-off Recipe Barb McMurray of Tehkummah is the winner of this year s Wild Game Cook-off held as part of Assiginack s Manitoulin Deer Show.
