This guide has been produced by the Environment Agency. It is designed to assist anglers when fishing on the River Trent, showing which clubs control which section of rivers, and which are day tickets or members only. The guide has been produced with the assistance of the many clubs mentioned and we would like to thank all the clubs who responded to our request for information. In all instances, we have attempted to provide you with the correct details, but some details may be incorrect, due to changes in ownership, incomplete records, or lack of response from clubs. Any information you may have which could update or improve the guide would be appreciated. Please contact the Environment Agency, on There is a sister publication entitled 'Soar & Wreake Rivers Guide'. The Environment Agency is committed to protecting, enhancing and improving our fishing waters in England and Wales. The Agency Vision is that all waters in England and Wales will be capable of sustaining healthy and thriving fish populations and everyone will have the opportunity to experience a diverse range of good quality fishing. E n v ir o n m e n t Ag e n c y
Rod licences Who requires a rod licence? Every angler aged 12 or over who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish and eels in England and Wales must have an Environment Agency rod licence before they start fishing. Fishing without a licence is a criminal offence, punishable with a fine of up to 2,500. What licence do I need? There are two types of rod licence: Non-migratory trout, coarse fish and eel licence Salmon and migratory (sea trout). This also entitles the holder to fish for non-migratory trout, course fish and eels. Annual licences are available, as well as short-term (8 day and 1 day) licences. The annual licence runs from 01 April to 31 March following. Short term licences run from the specified date and time. Concessionary rates are also available for annual licences - please check before you buy. ENVIRONMENT AGENCY
W here do I get a licence? Rod licences are available from all 17,000 post offices, as well as from Environment Agency offices and certain fisheries during their normal opening times. For details of 'out of hours' licence outlets, please phone our general enquiry line on You can also buy your rod licence (full and junior concessionary licences only) over the phone on and on-line through the Environment Agency website: Do I need to carry my licence? You have to show your licence to an Environment Agency officer or authorised person on request. Please make sure you carry it at all times when fishing - it is a criminal offence not to. A photocopy is not sufficient. If you lose your licence, you must replace it immediately. Please contact the Environment Agency for a replacement*. Please retain the tear off strip from your licence, as this will help us to trace it. *There is a small handling charge for replacement licences. Please read your licence carefully and abide by its instructions. Remember, in addition to holding a valid rod licence, you must have the permission of the owner before you start fishing on waters under his or her control. 2
Midlands Region byelaws Byelaws are the statutory rules and regulations put in place by the Environment Agency which must be complied with by all anglers fishing in the Midlands Region. They exist to prevent damage to fish stocks from insensitive fishing methods and to make sure that fisheries are sustainable for the enjoyment of current and future generations of anglers. These byelaws apply to all types of fisheries, be they owned by angling clubs, syndicates, local authorities or by private individuals. Whilst fishery owners may impose additional more stringent regulations, they are not able to dispense with any of the fishery byelaws. They may, for example, restrict the number of rods a coarse angler can use to two, if they feel it is in the best interest of their fishery. 3
However they may not remove the Agency's maximum limit and allow more than four rods to be fished. Fortunately, the vast majority of anglers and fishery owners are responsible and law abiding. However, there is no room for complacency as the Agency takes a dim view of byelaw offences and will always take action against offending anglers. For a free copy of 'A Guide to Rod Fishing Byelaws for the Midlands Region' please contact your local Environment Agency office, Trentside Offices, Scarrington Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5FA or call
