A lot has happened since the last issue of Tightlines and as well as there being heightened interest in the club we have new Committee members. up, putting the Senior members to shame. Cassie caught 7 fish for a total weight of 3.75 kilos and also managed to bring home the largest snapper and the second largest flathead. Alen El-Hilli just out did Cassie with the largest Flathead. For the first time in the history of the fishing club, membership has passed 200 thanks to the efforts of our new Membership Captain, Susie Donaldson. In this issue of Tightlines, there are the usual reports from the division Captains, the change to the club rules passed at the AGM, information about our relationship with the RSL Club and some general information for our new members. To the outgoing committee members, a sincere thank you for your contribution and commitment to the success of the club. Have a wonderful Christmas, be safe on and around the water and may there be tight lines. Rob Claude Zavattaro 17 th September 2011 Captain Claude was galavanting around Europe so Jim Tucker was deputized as trip captain and by all accounts did a commendable job. The charter fished at Rosa Gully wide in good conditions with low seas and sunny weather. In total 35 fish were caught and worthy of note were the efforts of Cassie Tucker who cleaned!"#$%&#'()*! 22 nd October 2011 Longreef wide. Conditions on this trip were a little rough with a solid wind and a strong current making it almost impossible to hold bottom which is reflected in the weigh-in of only 11 fish. Notable fish on this trip were the 0.7Kg snapper caught by Leona and the 0.9Kg Morwong weighed-in by Jeff Lowe. The most fish weighed-in was 3 each to Jim Tucker and Dave Saggers. David weighed-in a Pigfish, Morwong and a Flathead with a total weight of 2.30Kg. 19 th November 2011 Sydney Harbour The charter started out off Sydney Heads but a sea fog made it very difficult for fishing and the boat captain decided it was better to fish within the safety of Sydney Harbour. Only 21 fish were weighed in with 13 of them being flathead. The fisherman to with the most fish and the greatest weight of fish was new member, Tony Sammut with a total of 6 fish weighing 3Kg. % 9:%

2 A couple of charters have been cancelled due to bad weather. Keep an eye on the trip sheets because there will be another away charter added to the calendar. parking. It was a magnificent day weather wise. The best seas we have seen in a long time. The sea was flat with a long slow lazy swell. The colour of the water was a deep blue and we were 2! kilometres out of the heads. The small boats division has been very active and on the last trip 11 boats were booked in although a couple had to pull out at the last moment. It s very pleasing to see the increase in interest in the club and more small boats participating. 7 th August 2011 From Tunks Park We had three boats on this outing with six members and one junior member. We left the ramp at 6.00am and the water was as smooth as glass. It started to get a bit bumpy when we were approaching the heads. The sea got a bit rougher as the morning progressed. The problem was the current, and we had to let a lot of line out to keep the rig on the bottom. There were no leather jackets about but there were whales and dolphins. On the last Roseville trip David Spencer and crew where the only one's that caught fish. This trip David and his crew where the only one's that didn't catch fish. David Spencer and son William went out wide. Roy Kingston, Jack Porter, Bill Grech, Michael Pace and myself fished off Rosa Gully and caught 30 flathead. Ian Hill kept telling me that he was fishing in 60mtrs of water so I went out to 60mtrs of water but Ian didn't tell me that its 2000 square mile area! It was overcast with sunshine peeping through with the odd shower. The biggest fish was caught by myself weighing in at 1kilo. 1 st October 2011 Tunks Park We had two boats and four members. We had a 5.30am start and there was heaps of The rumour got around that this fishing trip % was cancelled, as I am the trip captain, I am the only one that can cancel or postpone a fishing trip. Due to the rumour that went around it would be best to contact me Leo on or in regards to fishing trips. Rob Cooper took Dave Spencer in his boat and left an esky full of bait at home, so lucky for them we had enough bait to go around. Rob and Dave stayed close by on the same reef were we ended up with 14 morwongs 11 flatheads 1 pigfish 1 trevally 2 leatherjackets and 1 snapper. Total of 30 fish caught. The biggest bag went to Bill Grech 9.65kilos and the biggest fish went to Dave Spencer with one morwong weight-in at 1.55kilo. 6 th November Roseville On this trip we had seven boats and fifteen members. The fishing side of things was very poor. The almanac showed very poor fishing weekend plus the strong northerly current was so strong even with the anchor out it was still hard to hold bottom. There was more current behind the boat then the current under Swansea Bridge. Allan said it was advisable the first weekend of next month to be poor going by the almanac and that the weekend before suppose to be very good so we are making the next fishing trip the 26 th November being the last fishing trip for this year. ;:%

3 Lake Lyell 12th & 13th November 2011 Total fish caught was 36 fish. Jack Porter had 11 fish on board and the rest of us had between one to five fish to weigh in. Tony Zammit got the biggest fish with a Morwong weighing in at 1.1kilo. We finished the day with a sausage sizzle. Lake Lyell turned out to be another great weekend with good weather, good company and beautiful scenery. Unfortunately, the fishing wasn t as good as hoped with only 8 fish being caught. The almanac predicted that the fish would be on the bite around 1pm on Saturday and sure enough, that was when most of the fish were caught. Tony Horn showed every on how to catch trout landing two worthy of 36 and 37 centimetres. Not all fishing was done from boats and Brent and Paul fixed themselves in a nice corner of the lake where we think that Brent felt he could sleep the day away and no-one would notice. To add insult to injury, he even landed a trout (about the size of a pilchard) but a trout, none the less. This trip demonstrates the importance of checking with the trip captain as the launch was changed from Parsley Bay to Roseville on the Friday night due to the Hawkesbury Classic being on at Brooklyn. MEET COTTON - She is a little terrier who wandered into the factory of Tony Sammut. She didn t have a collar, tags or a micro chip so Tony has adopted her. Cotton is getting used to fishing because Tony took her out on the small boats trip on the 6th November The ladies excelled by providing a mix of dishes (meals) that were shared by everyone and on the Saturday night we gathered for a barbeque, presentations and a few yarns. Greg was the star of the night keeping everyone entertained with his usual quick wit aided by some red beverages. Richard and Allan went out again on Sunday and stayed until Richard caught a fish. Six boats went out with a total of 6 trout caught with the largest Brown Trout going to Bill Grech and the largest Rainbow going to Tony Horn. <:%

4 % The weather hasn t been kind to the rock and beach division this year with quite a few trips being cancelled. Budgewoi Beach 24 September 2011 % Four of us attended the Budgewoi trip to find a beach with some good structure after recent heavy seas. Brent opened the scoresheet by landing a good sized salmon after a pod of dolphins swam close to shore and chased a good sized salmon directly on to his hook. Determined to prove it was no fluke, Brent proceeded to land another two salmon during the course of the day. Greg landed a salmon after nightfall, but Paul and Tonie went home empty handed. A very pleasant days fishing with 5.72kg of fish for the pot. Windang Island 16 October 2011 % Three of us made the trip to Windang Island and commenced fishing directly into deep water on the island s furthest point. Conditions appeared to be ideal with calm seas, light wind, and sunny skies. We tried all forms of fishing off the bottom with paternoster rigs, various baits under a float, and a variety of lures. We had no luck whatsoever, but another fisho casting directly =:%

5 into a strong wash with cunje managed to land a monster drummer. We persevered until lunch time before moving to the beach and the breakwater after the turn of high tide. We had numerous small bites fishing off the breakwater, but we did not land any keepers for the rest of the afternoon. Windang looks like the perfect fishing spot offering different options off the rocks, the sand, and the breakwater. But after three visits, we have not yielded a single fish, and may well fish closer to home in future as it is a long way to drive for no result. An immensely enjoyable day in spite of the clean score sheet. Old Man s Hat 3 rd July 2011 Today s outing would not count as an official trip as I was the only person fishing. Being on my own, I slept in for a change and arrived at Old Man s Hat at about 10.30am. Early morning fishos already had good catches mainly salmon, some sergeant baker, and plenty blackfish. I started blackfishing and hooked up on my first cast. I had plenty of bites and caught six fish in less than two hours, and then packed up as I had enough for dinner. Fish were still on the bite when I left. I guess fishing relies on a lot of luck and prevailing conditions. The other two fishos say they fished all day last Saturday and caught a total of 3 fish. When I left today, they had more than a dozen and were still pulling them in. A beautiful sunny day with no wind. Apart from giving the fishing club an annual grant for membership, they also assist with subsidizing events held at the RSL Club. The funding from the RSL Club, along with the money raised through the raffles, goes toward subsidising fishing trips, functions and other activities. Change to the club rules At the AGM a change to the club rules was passed. The change is to the weighing in of fish and relates specifically to catch and release. Rule 42 now reads as follows: >:%

6 42. Catch and Release / Record Rules. General Comment. Catch and Release is/has become a popular and acceptable option with fishers across all disciplines over the years. The Castle Hill RSL Fishing Club recognises this trend and the following conditions will apply across all divisions should a club member decide to follow this technique. Two methods for the recording of catches. a) Buddy System The buddy system is where a fishing companion(s) witnesses the capture, recording and release of a fish. This requires the accurate placement of fish on catch and release (brag) mats to verify the measurement. The fish may be released immediately after the recording has been witnessed. b) Photo System This involves the use of a digital camera to record and validate the catch. Fishers use the camera and measuring mats to capture a clear photograph showing the length of their fish immediately after capture. The fish needs to be located on the mat so that its nose is placed against the end and the tail clearly showing the measurement underneath. Photos are to be made available to the trip captain for viewing at weigh-in and by request for a period of 4 weeks after the trip. Only those species that have official tables are eligible for Catch and Release recording. For the purposes of equality, all eligible species are to be total length, that is tip of mouth to furthest tip of the tail. If a Fishing Club Member believe they have a trophy fish, either for a club record, or for biggest fish of the day, that fish is to be presented at weigh-in, gutted and gilled in accordance with existing club rules. Fishing club members can elect to use this method for presenting details of their catch to the trip captain at weigh-in. The catch is to be recorded on the predetermined table according to the species and length. These tables will be available to all members for download on the website and Trip Captains can also carry stock. Club Members choosing to use the Catch and Release Method are responsible for ensuring they have the required tables and brag mats to record the catch. The Record Tables will be generated from the details found in the Fisheries section of the Department Primary Industries website. ( al/saltwater/weigh#measuring-length). This site contains conversion tables for all the major species both fresh and salt water. These tables are to be reviewed by the committee every 6 months. The associated weights to lengths recorded are considered total, so the Fishing Club rule of reducing by 10% will apply for overall recording purposes.?:%
