By the time you all read this our weekend trip to Bjelke-Petersen dam will have been over. There were 28 members and wives that took the trip up to fish the freshwater and no doubt tonight you will learn just how well or how badly we did. For those of you who have not been away to one of these trips I can only recommend it as even if you do not catch too many fish it is a lovely social time with an evening at the restaurant and the presentation BBQ. As you know this year the trip in May to Maroochydore is a midweek trip because we were unable to get a weekend booking. Currently we are unsure whether we can get a late checkout at 12 o clock which enables us to get another mornings fishing in. We will probably not know about this until we get there. When we have had a weekend trip we have always got a late check out on the Sunday because they have very few booking s for the Sunday evening so can do the cleaning later and this is, to me, a great advantage in having the trip on a weekend. We have 15 cabins booked, having cancelled some cabins as we have less numbers this year. Please do not forget the church garage sale in May. John Casey is collecting/storing donations from those of us who live on Bribie and Keith Kable from the Sandstone Point residents. It is intended to use the proceeds from this sale towards subsidising a social trip away. Currently this looks like being a trip to the Kilcoy races in August. My thanks to those who have volunteered for the month end BBQ s and my apologies for not thanking those who organised the March BBQ at that BBQ when I spoke. Keith will be organising the roster for the RSL raffles, which start in June, and which is rapidly approaching. If you are going to be away for any particular month can you please let Keith know As soon as possible. The Christmas in July social outing dinner has been booked for 14 July at the Woorim Golf Club. It will be a subsidised event and at a reasonable cost so please lock the date in to your diaries. Hopefully some of you will have been getting into the fish. I have only managed to get out a couple of times and the fish gods have not shone on me. However for those of you who like crabs I can report that there were a lot around the last week in March. The Tweed weekend in October has been booked. We have booked 11 double cabins (none of the tiny ones) and 4 cabins with double bedrooms which is every cabin they have. Please think about whether you would be willing to share one of the double bedroom (waterfront) cabins with another couple as if you do you will automatically get one of those newer cabins. If we don t get volunteers then we will have a draw. The Moreton bay Council is just about to start putting its budget together for 2018/9 so if you would like to see us have decent fish cleaning facilities at our boat ramps please send an to Brooke.Savige@moretonbay.qld.gov.au telling her you want better facilities. I have already done this and encourage you all to do the same. Happy birthday to all those who are growing another year wiser in April. Tight Lines Mike

Weighmaster s Report March 2018 Well, here we are into the 4 th month of 2018 and as usual in the first 3 months Hasn t the weather turned around? Isn t it still so hot in April? Looks like we are going for a really hot winter! And so of course March saw more activity out on the water than the first 2 months combined! Hopefully, this will be a sign of what is still to come with 17 fishermen and 23 species catching 115 fish in total! And we had 1 new Club Record and 1 equal Club Record! Ray McGilvery with his very first weigh-in scored a previously unrecorded species A Lavender Job Fish which becomes a new Club Record but if he hadn t caught an undersized one first I probably wouldn t have been keen on recording it as a new species! LOL!! And Ron WINNETT equalled his own previous Club Record of a 1.36kg Grunter! Excellent Effort Guys! And for the real reason why these guys figure so prominently each month Trevor PLANT weighed in 22 fish for the month closely followed by Richard PATTERSON with 21. Although Richards was in only 6 days compared to Trevor s 28 days!! Remarkable effort that! And now for the details of the different types of Weigh-Ins in all of the categories!! Ladies Inshore This month saw 3 ladies vie for the prizes catching 18 fish amongst them and with a good range of 7 species! 3 rd Place Rosemary BLYTH 14 Points.64 kgs 2 nd Place Tina PATTERSON 68 Points kgs 1 st Place Pam McGRUDDY 71 Points 4.49 kgs Pam was able to win with a greater range of Species caught being Bream, Dart, Grassy Emperor, Grunter and Snapper making up her catches! Heaviest Bag Tina Patterson with kg although in only 1 week we wonder how she would have gone fishing for the rest of the month?? Men s Inshore We had 11 members who weighed in for the month with all the usual suspects/species caught, we had 27 Bream, 4 Cod, 7 Dart, 6 Sweetlip, 9 Flathead (of 3 varieties), 6 Grunter, 1 School Mackerel (obviously late for classes!), 4 Moses Perch, 11 Snapper, 1 Sole but 3 Small Tooth Flounder, 2 Trevally, 1 Giant & 1 Golden Trevally too and the rest were Summer Whiting! 5 th Place Trevor BOURKE 36 Points 3.07 kgs. 4 th Place Frank OOSTENBROEK 81 Points 9.16 kgs. 3 rd Place Ron WINNETT 87 Points kgs. 2 nd Place Trevor PLANT 128 Points kgs. 1 st Place Richard PATTERSON 131 Points kgs. Special Mentions John DAVIS 1 Point (first for the year!). And John CASEY with an 865-gram Bream up from his 805 gram Bream last month!

Ladies Offshore This month we had double the number of Ladies weighing in so the message is getting through (or else the weather is getting better!) So, on the same day, Sheila & Julie McGilvery were out and both had fish for the month! 2 nd Place Julie McGILVERY Points.185kgs 1 st Place Sheila OOSTENBROEK Points 1.21kgs Heaviest Bag Sheila OOSTENBROEK with her Venus Tusk fish & Moses Perch Mens Offshore Well with the better weather we had a 300% improvement on the number of Offshore men weighing in with 4 making their efforts count. 4 th Place Alan GOUGH Points.375kgs 3 rd Place Ray McGILVERY 8.25 Points.55kgs 2 nd Place Loris ROUBEN 34 Points 4.6kgs 1 st Place Frank OOSTENBROEK 55.4 Points 4.48kgs Special Mentions Ray McGILVERY New Club Record with a newly recorded species LAVENDER JOB FISH Heaviest Bag Loris ROUBEN 2 very tasty PEARL PERCH for 4.6kgs! Freshwater NIL WEIGH-INS! Heaviest Bag NIL WEIGH-INS! So with my 3rd Weighmasters Report I m starting to pack and get prepared for my first ever Freshwater Comp at Bjelkie-Petersen Dam this weekend! We ve had a few obstacles thrown in like Wally O s wifes unfortunate Hernia Op but as I said to him it s not totally unexpected she s been carrying him for years! I m sure you ll all join in wishing Jenny a quick & speedy complete recovery over the next 5 weeks! So, my ride& boat share is not coming along so not sure what to do for fishing platform?? The dam itself is now up to 30% capacity after the recent deluges, but still well down and hard to know if I should risk taking the Bismark as some have nick named my 6 metre Polycraft! And the word is that because the water level is down the fish are very hungry and scoffing anything BUT ONLY AT DAWN & DUSK! Nothing during the day so starting our comp at Gentlemen s Hours will probably result in a much lower catch rate! MAYBE WE SHOULD RECONSIDER THE START TIME?? Other than that following a much more closely fought March I personally am looking forward to some Redclaw, some decent tussles with freshies to learn new tactics etc and some great company for the trip! So, until next month s edition tight lines, new GPS Spots & here s to trying new experiences on the water!

New Species Although not all new species are eligible to be weighed in, it is worthwhile mentioning that these fish are being caught in our local area. This Yellow-Fin Tripod Fish (Tripodichthys Angustifrons a member of the leatherjacket family) was caught in just two meters of water at Cook s Rocks. The three spikes are non-poisonous and serve as a defence against anything that may be after an easy meal. Sheila caught a Fringe Finned Trevally (Absolom Radiatus) on Cook s Rocks

Noxious Tilapia found on Bribie Island Residents and businesses on Bribie Island have been warned to stay alert to try and prevent further spread of a noxious fish throughout the island s creeks and wetlands. After 12 years of monitoring fish populations in the upper reaches of Dux Creek, it was with great disappointment that I first noticed tilapia had invaded sometime around 2015, said local marine biologist Dr Ben Diggles. The Mozambique tilapia cannot tolerate full strength seawater, so it s likely they got here during either the 2011 or 2013 floods, which spread freshwater across the entire western Moreton Bay from places like the North Pine and Caboolture River systems, which Tilapia invaded many years ago, Dr Diggles said. The upper Dux Creek ecosystem is the last major wetland remaining on southern Bribie Island, and the native fish populations it sustained (including popular recreational species such as bream, tarpon, cod and mangrove jack) have been threatened by extensive urban development over the last 2 or so decades. Unfortunately, we now have these noxious Tilapia spreading into all available water spaces, including those opened up by recent developments such as Gemlife Lake (in the Bribie Lakes development). It s not good news and something needs to be done about it to control the populations of these noxious fish. Tilapia are a freshwater fish, native to Africa. They were originally imported into Australia as aquarium fishes prior to 1963, at which time their importation was prohibited. However, they were still illegally available within the aquarium industry, and by the early 1970 s had been introduced into the wild in places near Brisbane including Tingalpa Reservoir and North Pine Dam. From there, Tilapia populations have exploded whenever they gained access to new environments, either through overtopping of dams after floods, or after their deliberate movement by unscrupulous people. Tilapia are listed as a noxious fish in Queensland, due to their invasive habits that threaten native fish species. It is illegal to have noxious fish like tilapia in your possession, and anyone who catches one must immediately kill it and dispose of it by burial or in municipal waste or risk a fine of up to $220,000. Even dead tilapia should NOT be placed back in the water because many will have a mouthful of live eggs or larvae. Tilapia are mouth brooding fish which deposit sticky eggs on nests before brooding the fertilized eggs and hatched larvae in their mouths. The mouth brooding strategy of the tilapia vastly improves survival of their young, which together with their ability to tolerate muddy water with low oxygen allows them to outcompete native fishes wherever they have been introduced into suitable new locations. Dr Diggles and members of the local fish habitat restoration group OzFish Unlimited have discussed the situation with State Fisheries authorities who have informed them the only way to get the tilapia under control is to try to fish them out. We may never be able to eradicate them, but the advice from QLD Fisheries is to encourage people to fish for them, take out as many as you can, kill them humanely (see for their brain location) and dispose of them properly (never back into waterways), Dr Diggles said. They are an omnivorous fish that feeds mainly on underwater plants and smaller invertebrates, so you can catch them using garden worms, insects or bread/dough on a small hook, or on small lures. Unless we can get permits to use electrofishers or rotenone, it looks like it s up to our local angling community to try to help us combat this silent tragedy. Anglers that catch tilapia in other locations on Bribie besides the upper reaches of Dux Creek (behind the Woolworths supermarket on Hornsby Rd and in the Gemlife Lakes along Bongaree Ave) can report them to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) QLD by ing photos to pestfish@daf.qld.gov.au or calling

Anyone who observes or catches tilapia in other locations on Bribie should report them to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) QLD by ing photos to or calling

Photo: Taylor Pheeney Myth busted on dusky flathead sex change DUSKY flathead can be found along the east of coast of Australia from Cairns in north Queensland to the Gippsland lakes in eastern Victoria. In Queensland, dusky flathead is a key target species, with the recreational fishing sector estimated to take 150 tonnes annually (McGilvray et. al 2014). That is approximately three times the reported commercial harvest. Fisheries Queensland collects length, sex and age information from the harvest of both sectors to assess the status of the Queensland component of the Australian east coast stock. Dusky flathead in Queensland is currently assessed as sustainably fished. The current monitoring program began in 2007 and is focused on the southern part of the state, between Baffle Creek (north of Bundaberg) and the QLD-NSW border. Research and monitoring projects are also being carried out on dusky flathead in NSW and eastern Victoria. Recent research has found that, unlike barramundi and yellowfin bream, dusky flathead do not change from males to females (protandrous hermaphroditism) as they grow (Pollock 2015). The sex of an individual is determined at the juvenile stage and is maintained through the lifetime of the fish. The dominance of female fish in the larger size classes and older age groups are a result of the slowing growth rates of male fish in comparison to female fish, and female fish living longer. The monitoring program is reliant on the participation of recreational and commercial fishers and wholesalers, who allow scientific staff to measure fish and collect frames.

Fish size length Length structure of harvested dusky flathead ( ) by sector (commercial and recreational) Dusky flathead are permitted to be harvested between 40cm and 75cm total length (slot limit). Most of the fish in this size range are females. Monitoring program staff measure about 1000 recreationally caught dusky flathead and about 2000 commercially caught dusky flathead each year. Dusky flathead are most commonly harvested in the 40-60cm size range. Fish age A dusky flathead otolith as viewed through a microscope. Dots highlight the annual bands, which are similar to the growth rings of a tree.

A typical age distribution of the dusky flathead harvest (all sectors) for one year. The age of many fish species can be determined by examining their otoliths (ear bones). Fish age, in years, can be estimated by identifying and counting the number of opaque bands, like growth rings in a tree. Each year, whole otoliths of approximately 300 dusky flathead are examined to determine their age. The age is analysed along with fish lengths from the same year to determine the percentage of fish in each age group within the flathead harvest (also referred to as the age structure of the harvest). Results show that the recreational and commercial fishery sectors have very similar harvested age structures. Dusky flathead can live for more than ten years, but they are most commonly harvested as three year olds. Fish which are seven years or older are less common in the harvest due the protection afforded by the maximum size limit i.e. some seven year old fish have lengths over the 75cm maximum size limit. How old is your fish? Age-at-Length graph for dusky flathead

Measure the total length of your fish then estimate the age using the graph below. For example, a fish of legal length (40cm) is likely to be between two and four years of age. Thanks to all the stakeholders who generously assisted with the monitoring program by retaining and donating fish frames or by allowing scientific staff to measure catches of fish. Thank you to Bush 'n Beach Fishing magazine for this article. A Newsletter Article from 2006 Last Saturday was the day when the Old Dogs would learn some New Tricks. We had left Spinnaker Sound Marina at 04:00am. Richard, George and Ron left in Ron and Carole s Allison 189 and I took Syd Noel in our boat, as well as a couple of other deckies. Moreton Bay was fairly sloppy, but as we rounded Comboyuro Point, the ocean became a smooth and shiny mirror that got everyone excited. A few more minutes and we would be there. I can t believe I actually took these guys to my secret spot. Sid was the first to strike it lucky. I really wanted to take Syd Noel out because Syd and Lyn have been putting in the extra effort to make a complete success of the fund-raising evenings. They are also the reason that we can enjoy all of the benefits that the extra funds bring. I can still see Syd hanging on, as this monster 6.5Kg Snapper gave him the fight of his life. Every time that Sid used that tiny little rod to get the Snapper near the surface, that drag would scream as the fish swam all the way back to the bottom. The fight kept up for approximately fifteen minutes until finally the fish gave up, to the sheer delight of all on board. Meanwhile on the other boat, Richard had caught a massive Spangled Emperor that also weighed in at 6:5kg. This unlucky fish had lost the fight to an old twelve Kg nylon line that should have been thrown in the rubbish bin years ago. Richard had also caught a Snapper that would have been a good two kilos. George was happy with what would normally have been good size fish.

The gentle noise of the waves lapping on the side of the boat was broken with a WAAHOOOOO!!! from George as the radio echoed his call. Ron has just caught a ten kilo Snapper he said. Although we didn t believe it was ten kilos we could hear in George s voice that is must have been a whopper As it turned out, Ron had caught a 7.5 Kg Snapper. The biggest fish he had ever caught, and it was actually caught on a Soft Plastic. Many more were caught throughout the morning and it was good to see that quite a few big fish were returned to fight another day. We left for home about twelve thirty and headed back to Spinnaker Sound Marina and I feel sure, that the stories of the ones that didn t get away, will be heard for a long time to come. It was great to see that everyone had caught fantastic fish on soft Plastic lures. It was also great to see that everyone had caught their biggest fish ever, but it was even better to see that you can teach these old dogs some new tricks.

Joke of the Month A LOVE STORY I will seek and find you. I shall take you to bed and have my way with you. I will make you ache, shake & sweat until you moan & groan. I will make you beg for mercy, beg for me to stop. I will exhaust you to the point that you will be relieved when I'm finished with you. And, when I am finished, you will be weak for days. All my love, The Flu P.S. Now, stop thinking about sex all you senior citizens, and go get your flu shot! OLD FELLA LOGIC An elderly gent was invited to an old friends' home for dinner one evening. He was impressed by the way his buddy preceded every request to his wife with endearing terms such as: Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc. The couple had been married almost 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love. While the wife was in the kitchen, the man leaned over and said to his host, 'I think it's wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your wife those loving pet names.' The old man hung his head. 'I have to tell you the truth,' he said, 'Her name slipped my mind about 10 years ago and I'm scared to death to ask her what it is!' Did you know? When wearing a bikini, women reveal 90% of their body. Men are so polite they only look at the covered parts. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you love someone? That's your common sense leaving your body. I was always taught to respect my elders, but it keeps getting harder to find one. You should - aspire to inspire before you expire.

Those who Support Our Club The Bribie RSL Fishing Club provides a real service to the community by extending the hand of friendship not only to the fisher men and women with a common interest, but also to the many residents of Bribie Island and the surrounding area who would otherwise lead a lonely existence. Currently our club has approximately eighty members of whom only twenty to thirty are regular fisher people. Without the ability to raise the necessary funds, our club would not be able to exist, so through the generosity of the Bribie RSL Club, members of our club are able to raise the finances required by conducting meat tray raffles on a Thursday night from June until January of each year. In addition, the Bribie Island RSL Club supports us in very substantial and significant ways use of facilities at the Sports Club for our monthly presentation BBQ s, use of the ANZAC room for our monthly general meetings and very importantly, a $20 voucher each month for our member s draw. Many thanks Bribie Island RSL Club we really do appreciate your support. There are also occasions where we have the ability to raffle other prizes that have been kindly donated by our local businesses. The prizes that have been donated are actually great prizes that provide a real benefit to the people lucky enough to win them. Owners of Browns Mitre 10 on Bribie Island, Michael and Samantha Brown have very kindly agreed to support us by donating a $20 gift card each month to be used as a raffle prize at our monthly general meeting. In addition, they have offered a 5% discount on all fishing, marine and bait goods when members show their Bribie Island RSL Fishing Club member identification at time of purchase. Browns Mitre 10 is a Wilsons fishing tackle distributor. If members provide a Wilsons product number for the item they wish to purchase and it is not in store, Michael will order it for you. This is a great service. In addition, Michael has offered to provide better pricing for group buys or for certain high turnover items. Thank you, Browns Mitre 10 Bribie Island.

Steve Kelly from Mr Minute is a very keen fisherman who has supported the club for a number of years. Steve has generously donated numerous prizes including Leatherman tools and a number of Led Lenser LED flashlights/torches.
