From the President s Desk Hello everyone. I don t have a new photo - so that tells the story for me. The fishing throughout May was pretty good with plenty of fish being caught both inshore and offshore. For those who couldn t make the BBQ (although it was bare foot bowls and pizza), there were many varieties of species weighed in. See Richard s report for the details. May was pretty busy with the trip to Maroochydore being the highlight. Marg and I certainly enjoyed it and it seems everyone else did too. I have never caught so many bream in my life and yet for me, none met the weigh-in requirements. I was rewarded for my effort though with a win in the lucky draw. Margaret Steptoe gave us all a real scare and I am so glad that she is back to being well again. I did contemplate that her effort might have been worthy of a presentation of a certain hat but thought better. The end of month lawn bowls and pizza BBQ was most enjoyable. The lawn bowls was real fun. Mike Phillips and I didn t get to be in a team (no one wanted us) (It s okay Mike and I got over the rejection pretty quickly) so we went head to head. It was a good tussle. Richard s presentation of where everyone came in the weigh-in points generated much interest and will be a feature of each end of month BBQ. Many thanks Richard. Josie underwent open heart surgery in May and is recuperating really well. It just goes to show that you can t keep good people down. Many thanks to those who helped to tidy up Josie s gardens and yard on Tuesday. There wasn t a lot to do so I only advertised it within the Committee. Josie s gerberas will now really prosper in Spring. George also has been unwell and was hospitalized for a little while. Again, you can t keep good people down and so he seems to be recovering well. John Crump has been undergoing an exhausting treatment program of radiation which has knocked him around but he is doing well. We all wish you continuing speedy recovery George, Josie and John. The RSL raffles on Thursday nights have commenced. If you are able to make the evening and you are able to wear your Club shirt, we look forward to seeing you there in support of our Club and the RSL Club. Ken and Robyn Roberts have moved up to the Sunshine Coast hence Ken has tendered his resignation from his Committee position. Many thanks Ken for putting your hand up for the position of Assistant Treasurer. We hope that you and Robyn really enjoy the lifestyle up there. Just a reminder of the terms of Michael and Samantha Brown s Mitre 10 support. The gift card won in the monthly meeting raffle can be used to purchase any products in store. The general discount when you tender your membership card only applies to marine, tackle and bait products. Those of you who are members of VMR will have received an regarding marine Dr Ben Diggles project to encourage people living on Bribie s canals to join the project and garden shellfish supplied in cages and grow them to a size where they can then be used to restore reefs etc. For those of you who didn t receive the and would like to learn more, please go to That also advertised 5 free safe boating workshops being conducted from July to November by VMR. I noticed that one of them was on Local Knowledge of Pumicestone Passage and Moreton Bay and one on Local Fishing and Tips and Tricks. These may be of interest to our new members especially those who have just come to the Island. Bookings are essential ring VMR on May all of your target fish be hungry and big. Cheers!

Weighmaster s Report Winter has certainly made its presence felt, as the temperatures have fallen well below 10 degrees in the early hours of the morning but the news is not all bad. It seems that a few of our members are fishing in a very secret spot that everyone know about for a few quality snapper. Ron Winnett and Richard Patterson braved the cold temperatures and caught this great specimen a couple of weeks ago. Richards fish does seem a lot bigger. There is a real opportunity for the ladies to win this month s competition as there have only been a couple of entrants in the past few months. Going on past results you will only need a few bream to win a place so get on out there while the sun is shining. The results for the May Competition 2016 competition are as follows: OFFSHORE: Ladies Winner: N/A Men s Winner: Frank Oostenbroek Ladies Runner-up: N/A Men s Runner-up: Peter McGruddy INSHORE: Ladies Winner: Kerryn Cochrane Men s Winners: Ron Winnett Ladies Runner-up: Tina Patterson Men s Runner-up: Trevor Plant Lucky Draw: Carole Winnett

The Editor s Notes Bream and Pearl Perch I must be getting older because I can t remember ever feeling the cold as much as I have when I am sitting out on the water of an evening. A shirt, jumper, coat, socks, ugg boots and a hot cup of coffee, still don t warm me up. I must admit though, it is worthwhile sitting out on a glassy sea watching the sunset. June is the month when all our anglers focus on bream and pearl perch but it appears that all the fish had prior warning. Quite a few of us have been trying very hard to catch five big bream in a session but most of the bream seem to be quite small compared to past years and the pearl perch situation is even worse as I don t think any fish have been weighed in by the offshore fishos. Stradbroke Island I was recently invited to spend a weekend at Stradbroke Island and was so impressed I thought I would share the experience in case you were thinking of going over for a look. We had booked the Stradbroke Ferry well in advance but when the time came, we were a little apprehensive about travelling to Cleveland Point in the early morning peak hour traffic. We had booked the ferry for 8:00am so we left home at 5:00am to make sure that we wouldn t be late. As expected, the traffic over the Gateway Bridge had come to a standstill at Mango Hill. We crawled along the highway for a little while and then sped up to 100kph just before the Pine River Bridge, selected the left lane and headed towards the Gateway Bridge. There are only 3,500 people living in Deagon, but the traffic seems to come to a stop just before you get to the turn off every morning, so as expected, we spent the next fifteen minutes travelling along at snail s pace. As I looked ahead I could see the cars start to speed up and it wasn t long before we were back up to 100kph. Amazingly all the cars seemed to disappear after the airport turn off so the rest of the trip was a breeze. It had only taken us 1.5hours to drive from Bribie to Cleveland so there was plenty of time to fill the car with diesel and stop for a cup of coffee at MacDonald s. We decided to head out to the terminal to see what was involved in boarding the ferry. As we entered the terminal, we saw a sign that told us to follow the blue line which we did until the blue line ended

at the entry gate. We were greeted by a lovely and very friendly lady who asked us if we would like to board the 7:00am ferry because there was plenty of room. We agreed and were then informed that we had just saved ourselves $10.00 because we had travelled on an early ferry. Boarding the ferry was extremely well organised and we were again greeted by friendly staff. The trip to Stradbroke was smooth and only took us 45 minutes. The last time I had been to Stradbroke Island was in 1972 when the only place worth visiting was the pub. Things have obviously changed. Dunwich is a lovely little spot with a beautiful green parkland and a fresh bakery where you can pick up a tasty breakfast before driving up to Point Lookout at 100kph over a bitumen road. Point Lookout is a small community where the newly refurbished and modern hotel has become the meeting place for all the travellers. The steaks were big and tender and the drinks were refreshing and cold but the most outstanding features were the views. A few years ago about twenty members of our club went to Norfolk Island where we all had a great time and I mentioned a few weeks ago that I wouldn t mind going back but after seeing the views from Point lookout, I think that a week on Stradbroke Island would be better and far less expensive. Our accommodation on Stradbroke was in the Islander Holiday Resort where the rooms are fully equipped with a small kitchen, laundry facilities and a comfortable bed. A small veranda overlooked green lawns and a swimming pool. We could have prepared our own meals but just one kilometre over the hill was a tiny town which was similar to a miniature Noosa or Mooloolaba where we enjoyed a great breakfast. As well as the magnificent views, there are also plenty of beaches you can drive on for just $45.00 per year. I have been to Fraser Island many times and as much as Fraser really is beautiful, I think Stradbroke is certainly another option where I won t miss the thousands of cars that zoom up the beaches and the hundreds of fishermen that stand shoulder to shoulder in an attempt to catch a few fish. Maybe a new venue for the for a fishing club holiday?

Joke of the Month SALESMANSHIP The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship. Little Sally led off. "I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30" she said proudly. "My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success." "Very good", said the teacher. Little Debbie was next. "I sold magazines" she said. "I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events." "Very good, Debbie", said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "$2467," he said. "$2,467" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?" "Toothbrushes," said Little Johnny. "Toothbrushes," echoed the teacher. "How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?" "I found the busiest corner in town", said Little Johnny. "I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample." They all said the same thing; "Hey, this tastes like dog poo!" I would say, 'It is dog poo. Wanna buy a toothbrush?' "I used a politician's method of giving you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it's free and then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth." Little Johnny got five stars for his assignment.

For Sale/Giveaways Ron Russell has a stainless steel sink and top (see photos) to give away to any Club member who has a need for their own use. It will cost any non-club member a bottle of Scotch. Ron Russell s neighbour has off cut sheets of bench top board material that is ideal for outside use. It is a particularly dense and tough material. These are giveaways. Talk with Ron for his neighbour s contact details. A small team of gardeners only took an hour to put a smile on Josie s face

Those who Support Our Club The Bribie RSL Fishing Club provides a real service to the community by extending the hand of friendship not only to the fisher men and women with a common interest, but also to the many residents of Bribie Island and the surrounding area who would otherwise lead a lonely existence. Currently our club has approximately eighty members of whom only twenty to thirty are regular fisherpeople. Without the ability to raise the necessary funds, our club would not be able to exist, so through the generosity of the Bribie RSL Club, members of our club are able to raise the finances required by conducting meat tray raffles on a Thursday night from June until January of each year. In addition, the Bribie Island RSL Club supports us in very substantial and significant ways use of facilities at the Sports Club for our monthly presentation BBQ s, use of the ANZAC room for our monthly general meetings and very importantly, a $20 voucher each month for our member s draw. Many thanks Bribie Island RSL Club we really do appreciate your support. There are also occasions where we have the ability to raffle other prizes that have been kindly donated by our local businesses. The prizes that have been donated are actually great prizes that provide a real benefit to the people lucky enough to win them. Owners of Browns Mitre 10 on Bribie Island, Michael and Samantha Brown have very kindly agreed to support us by donating a $20 gift card each month to be used as a raffle prize at our monthly general meeting. In addition, they have offered a 5% discount on all fishing, marine and bait goods when members show their Bribie Island RSL Fishing Club member identification at time of purchase. Browns Mitre 10 is a Wilsons fishing tackle distributor. If members provide a Wilsons product number for the item they wish to purchase and it is not in store, Michael will order it for you. This is a great service. In addition, Michael has offered to provide better pricing for group buys or for certain high turnover items. Thank you Browns Mitre 10 Bribie Island.

We have some fantastic support in our community and we really appreciate all the help that our local businesses have provided but there is one company who just keeps on giving. Danny Payne, who owns Outback Adventures in Morayfield, has provided us with countless gifts over the last few years and continues to offer on-going support on a daily basis by providing our members a discount on all fishing gear. We really do appreciate the friendly service that Danny, Ken and all staff give us. Many thanks Outback Adventures. Some other recent prizes include: Eyewear Plus has donated a fantastic pair of quality polaroid sunglasses that any fisherperson would have loved to own. They have also provided us with a couple of lens cleaning spray bottles and appropriate cloths. Steve Kelly from Mr Minute is also a very keen fisherman who has supported the club for a number of years. Steve has generously donated a number of Led Lenser LED flashlights/torches. Led Lenser is well known as of the best names in quality LED torches and they also command a high price. A number of discount vouchers have been donated by MODE Hairdressing. It is nice to have a prize that can be utilised by the ladies.

Pacific Harbour Golf Club has donated quite a few gift vouchers for 18 holes of golf with a buggy for the last few years and although there are only a few members of the club who play golf, the prizes are greatly appreciated and are highly valued by the players. BRIBIE PASSAGE KIOSK & BOAT HIRE Kate and John McAuliffe have been sponsors of our club for many years and have donated many great prizes for our fishing competitions. Kate and John s support is ongoing and provide a valuable resource as our primary weigh in station. We thank you all for your ongoing support.
