Issue 2 Oct. 14, 2012 Wolf Lake - Getting Better with Time Wolf Lake - The Lindsay Machine Rolls Again Continued... I really thought it would be an easy win. With 45 MCC Teams and a few locals running up and down the lake, the crappie just became finicky. I suppose that s what separates the winners from all the others, knowing when to make the right move. If you haven't noticed, MCC acquired some new equipment. The best tournament scale system on the market, a new electronic leader board, a weigh-ticket printer, laptop, the tournamentkeeper software that the pros use, and a brand-new equipment trailer. I don t know about you but I think it s a major step for a little-ole-crappie-club way down in Mississippi. Charles Lindsay, Jr., & Charles Lindsay, Sr. showed us how to consistently produce winning stringers at Wolf Lake. Charles Sr. has won this tournament 4-times. Their winning catch of 9.18# s made them the first back-to-back winners in a long time. When we schedule Wolf Lake each year somehow we tend to forget that the Lindsay s (Charles & Charles, Jr.) are going to finish strong. Well this year was no different. This makes 4 times, that s right 4 times they ve won on Wolf. Two times back to back winners within 1 year (May and October 2012). There s no question, they did find the big stringer for this day. According to Mr. Charles, he s won it 3 times with son Charles Jr, and once with son Chris. We called it luck the 1 st and 2 nd time, now it s called skill. Ok, we all do the pre-fishing 2 or 3 days before but something always happens on t-day. Guess it s the boat traffic. Look, Wolf Lake is a 22-mile long oxbow lake that was once part of the Yazoo River, located about 6 miles northeast of Yazoo City, MS. Wolf was once a prime crappie lake but due to a fish-kill and the Great-Flood of 2011, it s beginning to regain its reputation. According to the old man, they had a spot picked out from prefishing but after 9am and no fish, a change in strategy was needed. The new tactic included fishing as many brush piles and tree tops as possible using the Kentucky-Lake style double minnow rigs. That s right straight minnows, no jigs. The gar had a field-day feasting on those straight minnows and so did the crappie. I warned you guys and gals in the last newsletter to watch out for the Lindsay's, but no one paid me any attention. I even forgot myself. The Friday before was excellent, it produced some huge crappie, Our new president, Ken Middleton secured everything through private donations, MCC didn t spend a dime of our funds. Thank you Ken. When you see Ken let him know you appreciate what he s done. I know Ken hates accolades, praises and compliments but you did good this time and we thank you. This equipment allows us to spend less time calculating and publishing the end-results, and we look professional. However with new equipment comes new challenges, it takes a little longer to get setup and going and we appreciate our members having patience at the weigh-in. Our new weigh-master has implemented procedures that s similar to the pros, where team-members handles their own fish all the way to the scales. This is working great. Thank you Bo Hudson. Our next plan to try and release as many crappie as possible back into the lake. We have seen from past experiences that Crappie in any lake can be depleted. Our job now is to be more conservative when it comes to catch-and-release. Most of our teams have good live-wells and oxygen systems, we re working on a release tank that we can move from place to place. Please help us conserve our precious resources for future generations. MCC is blessed with wonderful people and lots of them. We re just like any family, we argue, fuss and fight. Then at the end of the day we make up like nothing ever happened. Our weigh-ins are funny and humorous. We rag each other and then we congratulate each other and life goes on. At the end we realize its not just the fish or the prizes we re after, its something else, that close personal friendship that s developed before, during and after a tournament. May God Bless each and every one that reads this. Thanks, and see you at Barnett. BW

Page Issue 2 Oct. 14, 2012 From the Tournament Director s Desk - Terry Stewart Lindsay s Master the Wolf again!!! Ole Wolf has changed a little since the flood a couple of years ago. There seems to be more gar and Asian carp than before. However one thing hasn t changed much and that s the tough father and son 1 st place winning team of Charles and Charlie Lindsay!!! Yes folks, this is a repeat win from last year s Wolf tournament in June!! Congratulations guys on a fine catch of 9.18 lbs of Wolf s finest!! I m sure these guys are looking forward to Barnett!! Welcome back the husband and wife team of John and Jennifer Ratcliff!! They showed out with a great catch of 9.09lbs and took 2 nd place!! Good job ya ll!! And Barnett just happens to be close to home for them also!! It s really great to see the younger folks fishing and competing with the MCC group. So to get more kids involved the Moak brothers Dennis and Sidney asked if they could bring each of their daughters Abigail and Joanna to fish Wolf. They said the girls really enjoy camping and love to fish!! And the answer was absolutely they could bring both of the girls!! We even decided from here out the 3 rd partner rule has been modified to an unlimited number of High School kids and under! Bring as many kids as you would like that you can safely fish in your boat!! (6 pole limit still applies) Thanks Dennis and Sidney for the dedication to your daughters, and thank you other guys and gals that are bringing the kids!! This is something they will never forget and hopefully they will continue the tradition of fishing and the great outdoors!! Boss Barnett is up next and let s all hope the wind s not too bad!! The last 2 tournaments for this season have been record turnouts! So if your reading this and can make it come on out and let s set another one!! Hope ya ll smack em!! Any questions call Terry Registration at Lake Harbor Trade Depot: 5:15am 6:00am Locate.5 miles east of Hwy 43 Boat Ramp Start fishing time: 6:30am Stop Fishing: 2:00pm Weigh-in:3:00pm Hwy 43 Ramp Pavilion. The Weigh-Master s Master s- Bo Hudson Wolf Lake Wow!!! Never dreamed we would have 45 teams register for Wolf. I didn't think it would hold that many boat including the number of locals that fish the weekend. Overall it was an excellent tournament. However I must confess, our new equipment and weigh-in procedures still need some tweaking. I promise you we will eventually get it down. I appreciate your patience while we work out the logistics. It s been a challenge for all of us involved. My philosophy is If you want to go somewhere you ve never been, you got to do something you never did. That s what we re trying to do, go somewhere we ve never been. I personally thank each and every one for all your help and understanding while we experiment. On another note, if anyone wishes to help out with the weigh-in, don t hesitate to ask. We have a job for everyone. See you at Barnett!!!! Bo Hudson

Page Issue 2 Oct. 14, 2012 From the President s Desk - Kenneth Middleton II Thanks to everyone who made the Wolf Lake tournament! It seems to be one of the, if not the, largest number of teams to fish in Yazoo County to date. The Yazoo County CVB members were so pleased with the participation. I really appreciate that so many of you stopped to thank Tonja and the YCCVB for hosting MCC. We had 45 teams fishing the event. Even though the fishing has been tougher than before the flood, it is good to see the weights coming up each tournament. The Lake is on the mend and it won't be long before it's back the way it was just a couple of years ago. We will continue to support Wolf Lake in the future and look forward to spending most of the day culling fish to weigh. I would like to welcome new teams and hope you had a fun time fishing. I appreciate your patience during the weigh-in. We have a fix for the baskets that will keep the sides down and I promise we won't make you carry them a mile to the scales at Barnett. Our plan is to have checkin and weigh-in sites nailed early as possible. We are checking with a couple of hotels in Canton and Gluckstadt confirming security so we don't have to unload boats into the room at night. We should begin getting some fishing reports from Barnett soon to send out to you. Thanks especially to Terry and Tonya Stewart, Bo Hudson, Brad Chappell, Mike and Paula Nowell, Bernard Williams, and all the others we roped into free labor setting up and breaking down the equipment. Your hard work made Saturday a success! By the way, Larry and I fished in sight of Charles and Charlie all day and should have a good set of GPS coordinates to pass out to everyone for next year... Ha! Or maybe make them a door prize at Barnett? More to come, Ken **on another note, I have most of the rooms reserved in my name for Lake Washington and the March tournament. If you would like to reserve one just call Roy's Store and tell Pam to change into your name. That is a busy time of year and rooms can be scarce. 5 Last year s winners David McWilliams & Robbie Niven will try to fish that same brush-pile up-river. Please, don t let that happen. Someone please catch all the fish off that pile before t-day. That was too easy last year. David & Robbie are hard fisherman, they don't give up and they have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. We were lax on you guys last year but this year we re gunning for y all. Good luck but I hear the fish are a lot bigger in Big-Bad-Barnett. Paul & Tommy, please wear your lucky Shirts You might be a Red-Neck if you propose at a crappie tournament. We know the truth now. Ken & Larry, you better sharpen your hooks, I hear the fish are really getting big this fall. Ok y all North Mississippi Boys, come-on on-down. We ve got big crappie too. We plan to open up a CAN on you all. Who could mention Barnett without mentioning the Crappie-Master Rabbit Rogers.

How-To-Section: Spider-Rigging for Shallow-Water Slabs Late Fall and early winter is the season that some crappie fishermen seem to forget, they ve developed Buck Fever, from the current deer season or it s just too cool to fish. For the avid crappie fisherman this is when the weather changes from unbearably hot days to cold nights and cool days, the perfect fishing weather. The lakes become almost empty, very few fisherman on the water. I love this time of the year. This change in weather and water temperature cause something to happen in the crappie psych, the move from their deep water hide-outs to shallow water hold-ups, ready to load up with their favorite food, shad. Crappie start the winter gorge, they try to gobble up as many shad as possible in order to build up weight for the up-coming spring spawn. The Shad Migration The late fall and early winter crappie transformation is caused by the shad migration. Shad begin to travel when the water temps start to drop from the mid-80 s to the low 60 s and the crappie will tag along. Its like the spring-time part II. Crappie will go behind the shad into areas almost to shallow to float a boat. I ve experienced catching slab crappie in water less than 18 inches deep. Fishing shallow necessitates us long-liners and crank-baiters to change methods in order to catch the large crappie. We now have to utilize a technique known as spider-rigging. What I mean is we move both seats up front and use very 6 to 8 long poles (14 to 16 ) placed in our front rod holders, with 6# to 8# test line and either a single or double minnow rigs. We often attach 2½ walleye tubes filled with crappie nibbles and minnows. These rigs are gradually (.4 to.5 mph) pushed along shallow flats or break-lines. Fishing Location We try to find an area of the lake identical to where we fished in the spring. We look for creeks that run off the main channel. We then trail them back to where they begin to split and fragment off to small branches. This is just what the doctor ordered, if the area contains bait fish. Check you depth finder continually looking for the occurrence of shad at or near the surface. When we are probing for our late-fall spots on a new lake we ride the main areas looking for diving sea gulls. Sea gulls are thousands times better fish finders than any electronic device on the market, believe it or not. When we see these birds flocked in a certain spot you can be sure that there s bait fish in close proximity. They don t waste their time; they go where the food is can be found. Starting the Hunt When we coast up to our spot we want to fish we stop at least 50 yards for where we want to start fishing. We bait up and set up our rods in the holders and set the depths. We set 2 poles near the bottom in 5 to 6 of water and then stagger our depths about 1 foot apart up to 18 inches from the surface. We use our GPS and Lake Map to track the break-lines into the shallow areas, frequently adjusting our line depths as we move shallower. If we get a bite we stop and fish the area for a few minutes. The fish in these areas are particularly spooky. We use the 16 poles for two reasons: (1) to carry a broad path, and (2) not spook the shallow fish. Landing a Fish Fishing with really long poles necessitates some practice. When you have a 16 pole with a short string, you simply cannot lift a fish out of the water without breaking the pole tip. You have to maneuver the fish back to the back of the boat and then net the fish at the back, or if I m fishing alone, set the hook and slide the pole to the back of the boat before netting the fish on the front. We utilize a really long dip net, one with a 10 to 12 handle. This permits you to capture the fish further out from the boat than with a short handle net. Seeing the Bite Fishing shallow water calls for complete attention to all the details. Sometime the bite is very ferocious, I mean they will bury the pole tip 2 or 3 guides up the pole, but other times the bite is so delicate that you only see the line moving left or right, this is when you have to decide to set the hook or let him take it more. There are periods when you only see a peck, or thump. I set the hook in either case. Fishing shallow with sharp light wire hook necessitates a light set of the hook. A hard set will definitely cause you to either ripe the mouth or pull the hook entirely out of the fish. The poles have to be the center of your concentration. If I must take my eyes off the pole I place my hand on the rod rack. This permits me to survey any strikes I may get with my back turned. Triggering a Bite When the fish are finicky, I sometimes use diverse tricks to trigger a bite. Listed below are a few of my tricks and tips: A short quick turn to the left or right Speed up and stop or pull up and back-up, this causes the bait to rise and fall. Grab the line near the reel and pull 6 to 8 and let it fall, I do this on all the rods at random time intervals. Placing beads and a spinner blade above the minnow hook. Downsize hooks, minnows, jigs and weights Covering Water The best tip I can give you is to cover as much water as possible. Large lakes are full of dead-water. You have to do away with as much dead-water as possible. I do this by trying to read the natural signs, diving sea gulls, talking to the local fishermen, watching other boats and covering as much water as I can in a day of fishing. Spread your poles as wide as possible, the side poles often produce better than the front poles. I sometimes start out by long-lining an area just to see if I get a hit. If I can catch several fish in an area I mark this area and come back with my long poles. This helps eliminate a lot of dead-water. I must caution you to develop a pattern on the fish. Sometimes it takes several hours to several days. Fish all depths from the bottom to the top. I ve seen times when the water was extremely stained that the fish were only 2 feet from the surface. Don t fish under the fish. It s better to fish too shallow that too deep. Spider-Rigging Advantages Cover lots of water Spider-rigging at.4 to.5 MPH in 8 hours allow you to cover nearly 4 miles of water. With 14 poles out the front and sides, you can cover a 35 path down the lake. Target suspended and scattered fish Good sonar allows you see the baitfish schools and the fish underneath. By setting your line length just above the fish allows you to stay in the strike zone all the time. Fish Directly on Brush Piles, Stake Beds and Ledges Crappie love brush piles, stake beds and ledges, that s no secret. Spider-rigging puts and holds your bait directly over these areas, this is where the fish are, and sooner or later they re going to feed. Stay with the Schools Crappie travel in schools, spider-rigging keeps you on top of the schools of crappie. Catch lots of fish Spider-rigging with 6 to 8 poles increases your chances 6 to 8 fold. This allows you to catch your lake limit much faster. Inexpensive way to fish Fishing live bait is one of the least expensive ways to catch fish. Easy to Learn This technique is one quickest to master, it just takes practice. Spider-Rigging Disadvantages Multiple poles become tangled Its easy to get poles tangled, one uncontrolled fish can wreck havoc on your setup. Long poles Its takes time to learn to land a fish with long pole fishing. Don t try to lift a big fish with the pole, always use a dip-net, these pole tips are expensive to replace. Lots of Bait With 2 baits per pole and 8 poles it takes 16 minnows to get setup. At $2 per dozen that could become a costly. Rigging the Boat Most boats come with a single seat up front, to be effective spider rigging requires both persons to fish out of the front. Installing 2 seats on the front requires the purchase of a Double-Down Seat-Setup. Total Attention to Detail Fishing multiple poles requires your full attention, not paying attention and all your poles become hung can cause major frustration. Aerating your live bait Live bait requires some type of aeration, we use pure oxygen. This makes the minnows lively, they will literaly jump out your hand. A typical oxygen setup with tank, regulator and stone costs around $100. Oxygen refills costs about $12 per tank. Broken Poles Long poles are easily broken if you are not careful. Be careful not to step on the pole tips. Driftmaster Tip-Savers can save your poles from damage during transport. Conclusion While there are numerous ways to catch crappie in shallow water, I personally think spider-rigging minnows and jigs is one of the top fish catching techniques. Find the right lake, the right spot and hold on, get ready for some major action. Bernard

HOW-TO-SECTION: Wildcat Trolling I love to troll; I think any other type of fishing is boring unless you are tearing them up. I started pulling crankbaits and long lining jigs a few years ago and found this to be a very effective way to catch fish. This method works best when water temperature is above 50 degrees. The method works will with any type of trolling, from spider-rigging, long lining jigs to pulling crankbaits. The expert trollers will never tell this so listen closely. My method involves making large looping turns that crisscross each other. What happens when you make turns is the outside baits pick up and the inside baits fall and vise-versa. Since crappie are predator fish, they will attack anything that tries to get away or looks crippled. It s the same principle as a bully uses, if you run you get beat up. It s the same concept with crappie. When they see that jig or crankbait slow down or speed up their basic instinct is to attack. So there you have it, the turns are the key. The wildcat method got its name from me looking back at the GPS route and seeing that I had made a bunch of turns, my partner said that looks wild, and there you have it. Football has its wildcat, why not crappie fishing. This works so well because you can do this on a river channel or a flat. The key to this method is to overlap your turns when working a certain area. We use the wildcat very effective on the River Lakes, Barnett, Grenada, and Sardis, during the pre-spawn, spawn, summer, and fall. We use this technique during the spawn for no other reason than to just fine the location of the big sows, and then spider-rig them. Speed is another critical factor; sometimes we simply turn the trolling motor off for a few seconds and back on or speeds up and slow back down. I ll try anything to give that jig or crankbait an erratic move. This triggers what we call Reaction Strikes. The crappie might not be feeding but something coming alone and stop or speed up in front of them they can t resist. Tip: I use a Minn-Kota trolling motor with the I-Pilot. While most fishermen use the remote control for boat control, I use the foot control to control my speed. I have more control over the speed with the foot control than I do with the remote. Don t get me wrong, I always attach the I-Pilot remote control to my belt for the times when I need it in a hurry to turn the boat, but for my speed adjustments, I use the roller control on the foot control. It is truly variable control. I can go from 30% to 100% and back to 20% much faster with the roller than the remote. Boat owners should invest in a battery load tester. A load tester will signal you when a battery is not producing the proper voltage when placed under a load. Dead cell batteries can destroy the main board in your trolling motor. The Terrova and Power-Drive motors are designed to draw a certain amount of amperage and voltage, if a bad battery is in the mix, the low-voltage will cause the board to burn up. I know from 1 st hand experience, the boards are costly and will ruin a fishing trip. This technique can be used with any method of trolling, from spider-rigging to longlining to cranking. It can be utilized any season of the year. The key to making it productive is to let the fish tell you the speed they prefer. Bernard Williams

CREOLE CRAPPIE - Most Too Good! - By: Gene Westbrook 6 to 8 fresh crappie fillets Salt for fish fillets 3 T. butter or margarine, divided 1 medium clove garlic, minced 1 medium onion, diced 1 small green pepper, diced 4 Roma tomatoes, diced ¼ tsp. salt 3 drops Tabasco sauce ¼ tsp. garlic salt ½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce Lightly salt both sides of the fish fillets and set aside. In a large non-stick skillet on medium-high heat, melt 1 T. of the butter; then cook the garlic, onions, and green pepper until onions are transparent. Melt another1 T. of the butter and add the tomatoes. Cook, while stirring, on medium heat for about 4 minutes. Add the ¼ tsp. salt, Tabasco sauce, garlic salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir; then simmer for about 7 minutes. Push all of the Creole sauce to the outside edges of the skillet leaving the center of the skillet without any ingredients. On medium-high heat, melt the final 1 T. butter in the now empty center of the skillet. Place the fish fillets in the center of the skillet with the melted butter. Cook the fish fillets, gently turning several times and keeping in whole fillets, until done. Fish is done when it is white in color and not translucent; and is flakes when tested with a fork. Do not over cook the delicate fillets. Spoon the Creole sauce on top of the fish fillets and allow to rest in the skillet for several minutes on the lowest heat before serving hot.` Serves 2 to 3. Baked or Grilled Fresh Catch w/ Greek Seasonings - By: Gene Westbrook This recipe can also be cooked on an outdoor grill. Make a pan of heavy-duty aluminum foil with crumpled edges, for strength, that will hold the fish and sauce, or use a disposable aluminum pan. Spray-oil the foil or foil pan and place on a hot grill; then continue with the recipe below. Close the grill to cook. 6 to 8 crappie fillets Salt 6 T. butter or margarine Juice of 2 large lemons ½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 small clove garlic, minced then crushed 4 green onions, divided 1 tsp. Cavender s All Purpose Greek Seasoning Wash fillets, drain on paper towels, and pat dry. Salt both sides of the fillets. In a small saucepan, melt the butter with the lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and 2 of the green onions that have been chopped including the green tops. Heat on the cooktop until bubbling; then lower heat to simmer and cook for 2 minutes. Put the fillets in a spray-oiled baking pan and spoon some of the sauce on them; then evenly sprinkle with the Cavender s Greek Seasoning. Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree oven. Baste several times while cooking the fish. Cook only until the fish turns from a translucent color to a white color and the fish flesh flakes when using a fork to test. Just before serving, mince the remaining green onions with the green tops and sprinkle on the top of the grilled fish fillets.
