Its been a busy few months since the last newsletter, with the Nationals, Fishin Chicks Ladies contest and the One Base all fished within the last five weeks with the Easter Sportsfishing Tournament still to come. The most exciting news for the club would have to be the pending NZ and World record for Donna Pascoe's massive kg. Pacific Blue fin tuna caught on February 19th at the Three Kings during the Nationals in February. Donna spent just over four hours on the monster kg Pacific Blue Fin Tuna in weather not for the fainthearted. Believed to be a New Zealand and World Record, the claim will be sent to the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) for ratification. Along with the massive tuna, Donna also tagged and released 3 striped marlin and 8 sharks over the week long tournament. Nationals Competition Roundup At the conclusion of the competition on Saturday Donna and the team aboard Gladiator (skippered by Scott Sutherland) will be awarded a number of trophies and awards including the City of Auckland Trophy for tuna team Champions, Carol Atwood Trophy for Most Meritorious Tuna, New Zealand Champion Angler for Tuna Section and Champion Line Weight Angler for Tuna. Donna also picks up 2 nd for most tagged & released sharks (8) and 3 rd for most tagged & released striped marlin (3). The team from Ahab were the Shark Team Champions and will receive the NZI Trophy, Dave Kahlenberg taking out the 1 & 3kg line weight Shark Champion section. Junior member Bailey Beaufill fishing from Lured picked up four NZ Junior Champion awards for Albacore on 2kg, Kahawai on 4kg, Skipjack on 1kg & 2kg. Well done Bailey Top teams for Houhora were Ahab 1 st, Gladiator 2 nd and Lured 3 rd. Guy Jacobsen, James Tattersill, Robbie Matthews and Mike Fryer all tagged and released gamefish adding to winning points for the club. As a result of points accumulated over the tournament Houhora Big Game & Sports Fishing Club will receive the Stuart Morrison Interclub Trophy, Composite Development Trophy, Varta Cup Northern and Varta Cup overall. 2 Results from the Houhora Big Game & Sports Fishing Clubs Fishin Chicks Tournament 1st and 2nd March. Fishing both coasts, from land and sea, fifty eight contestants showed they can fish just as good as their male counterparts. Linda Lusty fishing from Attitude 1 landed the only marlin and while no tuna were caught two good sized mahimahi were boated. There were some very good kingfish, snapper and kahawai weighed over the two day tournament. The heaviest kingfish was 21.38kg and all three placed snapper were 7 kilos or better. Winning the $500 cash for Heaviest Kahawai was first time angler Brenda Long with a west coast fish weighing 3.2 kg. Kara Barker won the Best Catch by a Junior prize for her efforts in boating a 11.56kg kingfish. Best Poem Story was won by the girls from River Rough The event ended with a red carpet themed prizegiving where judging the Best Dressed category was nigh on impossible. Eventually the bar tab was split three ways between the crew from River Rough, Tommy Bellingham and Ash & Ann Mitchell. 3 Two hundred and twenty two anglers fishing from 67 boats contested the prizes for the 20th Houhora One Base Gamefishing Contest held from 12th -15th March. The remnants of Hurricane Lusci reduced fishing to three days for most, with only the hardiest of anglers fishing the third day. And just a few keen snapper fishos braving the upper harbour on the last day. The most sought-after prize of $10,000 for Heaviest Striped Marlin went to last year s Heaviest Billfish prize winner Shelley Erceg. Fishing from local west coast boat Karizma Shelley landed a striped marlin on Day 1 of the tournament. Shelley and her team mates Robbie and Lynda Matthews and husband Michael also took out the Team Most Points prize for the second year running. Overall six landed striped marlin, seven tagged and released striped marlin, one kingfish, two tuna, six mahimahi and ten snapper were caught for the tournament.
