Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club NEWSLETTER FEB-MARCH 2018 Presidents Report Hi Everyone, Well what a season its been! So far its been very busy at the club this year. Apart from the weather our One Base, Ladies Weekend, Eco Lab and ITM Tournament were all a well supported great success. Congratulations to all the winners and a HUGE thank you to all the anglers who support our club, I would also like to thank all the helpers, sponsors and awesome committee who make these competitions enjoyable, a big pat on the back to you all. Our One Base Calcutta was won by the team on the boat Shagz walking away with an envelope of $10,960 and the lucky Jemma Parrish from the boat Brace Ya Self walking away with a whopping $15,290 for the Ladies Weekend Calcutta. The weigh station deck area is slowly coming together with a finish date in eight weeks I've been told. You will see the piles have plastic sleeves over them to future proof them for over 60 years!! Our next competition is the CLUBS NZ Tournament. We need our Club fishos to get behind us and try and wrestle the title back from the army at Kamo Club! Finally I would like to make a special congratulations to our lucky draw holiday to Fiji and Vanuatu. Well done and we hope you enjoy your holiday you deserve it. Happy fishing everyone, see you all at the club for CLUBZ NZ. Cheers Terry P.s I'm looking to rent a lockable shed local :) Our normal fantastic Meat Raffles COMING UP Clubs NZ Tournament Sat 14th and Sun 15th April 6th Stockies Cockies and Growers Open Competition Hosted by Power Farming Sat 21st to Sunday 22nd April 2018 Friday Night Happy Hour TOTARA NORTH KING OF THE COAST 12th - 13th May 2018 QUIZ NIGHT Theme - Mask 26th May 2018 WSFC Year Books available now
Story of the month Pa Whoop whoop!! Off to Whangaroa for two weeks to catch the big one on the Fish City Albany boat, first couple of days bit too rough to head out so went down to join the guys at the Whangaroa sport Fishing Club on the table of knowledge Finally a nice day, up early. Headed out what a stunning day! Got to the 120 mark put the game gear up and started trawling for 4 hours No catch :( so decided to pack up to find we had left plastic on the lures. Not a great start. Next day swell had come back so decided to go for a Snapper fish stopped to get our lures in the bay, put down sabiki, couldn't work out why my hook was catching, pulled up to find I had no hooks on sabiki?? Bugger! Starting to think we are not made for fishing, tomorrow has to be a better day. This is it another perfect day, Got a good feeling about today, off we go. Packed a nice lunch with refreshments we were set for a big one. Travelled out to the 100 meter mark and up pops one of our crew members ummmm.. Did anyone put the lures in? there was a moment of silence and then laughter. Oh well great scenic tour back to the table of knowledge for the day. Hopefully next year we will have more luck. Becs and the Fish City Crew
Trailer Boats v Launches 2018 Review Page 3 We had a good number of boats again this year, with 34 in total, with 5 of those being launches. The sponsors this year were Makaira Boats in Waipapa, in conjunction with Shimano, ENL and the Farmilo family with Honda Marine. Day 1 saw 4 striped marlin with 3 weighed in and one tagged and released, the biggest fish of 129.3kg was landed by Shane van Biene on trailer boat Sweet As. Unusually there were 2 blue marlin tagged and released as they were caught early in the day. We also saw 7 snapper with the biggest of 4.4kg caught by Steve Pond on Blue Hustler. In the tuna section we had 3 skipjacks but also 5 yellowfin with 3 of them weighing 30+kg. The heaviest was landed by Roy Bergquist from charter boat Albacora, weighing in at 36.16kg. Of the 9 kingfish landed, Hillary Sheard aboard Shagz had the heaviest for the day, at 10.08kg. Day 2 saw the biggest fish of yesterday beaten by a lovely blue marlin of 222.1kg caught by Whangaroa local Peter Thew, from Ultimate Baby. Another good fish for the day was a very good snapper of 9.12kg caught on 10kg line by Bryce Guy on the boat Delivery. The contest as a whole was very successful with the trailer boats well and truly beating the launches with 920 points to the launches 180 points, so the trailers get to have their name first on the new shield trophy kindly sponsored by Makaira Boats.

Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club Page 5 One Base 2018 For our 41 st One Base the weather and sea conditions started off pretty rotten but as the days went on, it got better and better, and so did the catches. This year we had 164 anglers and 48 Day 1 was sponsored by Kilwell and despite the bad conditions there were 2 stripys an underweight one and a T&R by Kerry Smyth on Born to Run. There were also 4 T&R shark with Joe Campbell on Reel a Peel releasing a bronze whaler estimated at 120kg. Of the 7 snapper landed, the heaviest was a respectable 9.18kg for Gary Donald on Mistress. Quite a few kingis were caught with Tim Reid on Madness landing the heaviest of the Day 2 was also Kilwell s and after yesterday, quite a few boats opted to either stay in the harbour or have a lay day, but there were still 2 stripys caught although again the landed fish was underweight, and one was tagged and released by Michelle Beard on Spellbound. There were another 2 T&R shark, 10 snapper, 4 kingfish, with the heaviest at 14.86kg caught by Kurtis Foster on Albacora, and our first yellowfin which was caught by Glen Campbell on Violator 49.18kg; a very nice fish. Day 3 was as normal, the stay-away day, and sponsored by Lion Red and Icey-Tek. We wondered if anyone would stay away thinking of the recent conditions, but a few boats did, venturing as far north as North Cape, under the light. The conditions were starting to come right though, and the heaviest fish of the contest was landed by Kerry Aldworth on Born to Run; a blue marlin of 300.4kg, a great catch indeed, but not a stripy for the Calcutta money, although Kerry and Larry were well pleased with the catch. The first qualifying stripy was landed on this day and a hopeful Mike Jamieson on Albacora hoped no other stripy would be landed to beat his fish of 111.3kg. There was also another good yellowfin landed by Dave Chambers aboard KC, a fish of 30.72kg. As day 3 was much better than the previous days, day 4 was better again, and was a very, very busy day out on the water. Kilwell sponsored the day which saw a spearfish landed by Ron Inkster on Red Kite, weighing 22.9kg, a good mahimahi of 10.24kg by Scott Wilson on Centrefold, a snapper of 9.66kg on 10kg by Tony Porter on Trilogy, and an albacore of 13.16kg by Wade Gerrand on Blackbeard. The weigh-master also weighed in 6 yellowfin ranging in weight from the mid-twenties to mid-thirties with the heaviest at 36.9kg caught by Justin Telfer on Red Kite. And yes, we had 9 striped marlin, 5 of which were tagged and released, and a new Calcutta fish caught by Chris Bullen on Massonia, just scraping in with a fish of 115.2kg. Last day; day 5, sponsored by Warren Hay Marine and Garmin and the blue bobs poked their beaks up for a look. Rodney Brook on Tangalooma landed the heaviest at 163.1kg. There were also another 7 stripys, 2 of which were T&R, and again, by a small margin there was a new Calcutta fish of 115.9kg caught by Alastair Sheard on Shagz. Trophies: the Whangaroa Club Trophy for the tuna / kingfish section was won by Violator, who turned out to be a yellowfin boat this contest, landing 4 good specimens, 2 nd was Titi Wainui who had targeted the kingfish, with 7 caught, and 3 rd was Madness who had 3 kingfish. The Marlin Hotel Trophy for the shark section which is now only for T&R shark points, was won by Born to Run with 3 mako, 2 nd was Santana also with 3 mako, and 3 rd was Violator with 2 mako.
The Coruba Trophy for the marlin section was won by Born to Run with 2 striped marlin and their very good blue marlin, 2 nd was Bayou with 3 striped marlin, and 3 rd was Tangalooma with 1 blue marlin. Larry Bins, proud owner and skipper of Born to Run was very, very happy to win the Snooks & Lola Fuller Trophy awarded to the launch with the most points for T&R and weighed billfish and shark, with the Born to Run crew tallying up a blue marlin, 2 stripys and 3 mako. Gerry Gerrand, skipper of Blackbeard who fishes for Waikato, got to take home the miniature trophy for the Waiataiti Trophy that they won last year, and this year it was won by the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club who s only competing boat Grey Bear won all the points for the club, by catching a stripy and a mako. The Calcutta jackpot money was won by Hamish Sheard who had bought his boat Shagz, and Alastair who landed the biggest stripy. Hamish and Alastair made a wonderful donation of $1000 back to the club, $1000 bar tab for the night and a $1000 donation back to Coastguard Whangaroa, well done Our sponsors need a mention here too: Kilwell Sports, Warren Hay Marine, Garmin, Lion Red, Icey-Tek, George & Joyce Hawke, Burnsco, Mangonui Hotel, Snooks & Lola Fuller, Marlin Hotel, Seamounts, Pacific Harbour Lodge, World Travellers with a trip to Fiji which was won by Tony Porter aboard Trilogy, Whangaroa Lodge Motel and Hansens. Thank you everyone who made the contest possible and we will see you next year. Full results are available on our web site.

Nationals 2018 Nationals is finished and I was despairing that Whangaroa would get any awards but at the end of the day we didn't do too bad when the final results came out: 2nd Champion Line wt angler for snapper on 10kg - Andrew Freeman, and 3rd is Chris Lay from the Ezyees team on Christina, with fish of 8.42kg and 7.48kg. Champion Line wt angler for striped marlin on 37kg - Chris Lay with his fish of 161.7kg. 2nd Most T&R Shark - Baily McIntyre with 5 mako from Senator... NZ Junior Champion Blue & Black Marlin Angler and also NZ Junior Champion Billfish Angler for Blue & Black Marlin - Sean Mackay with his blue marlin of 169.1kg from Macksom. Sean will also receive the Mavis Rooke Trophy at our annual prizegiving, for the member weighing in the heaviest fish for the Nationals. Whangaroa's top team - Macksom Well done everyone, in not ideal conditions!!!
LADIES WEEKEND 2018 Page 9 Uniform Ladies not! Theme this year anything in uniform, and we had 40 boats and 105 anglers taking part to catch a fish, dress up, make poems, have fun, and dance the night away to DJ Venom, and all of this despite the weather which did not play ball this year, so there was a substantial bit of harbour fishing! First day was not very nice. Was the 2nd day going to be better or worse????? do we go trolling today or tomorrow. Or at all??? Tactics were thought out and played and despite the conditions we still had 3 marlin for the day; Linda on Kallista, and Chloe on Macksom both tagged and released a stripy and Susan Potier aboard Live Wire had the first stripy landed in an effort to win the biggest Calcutta jackpot I think we have ever seen at this contest! Her fish weighed 106.6kg and she even caught it on 15kg line. There were also a few shark T&R with the biggest fish, a bronze whaler estimated to be 150kg caught by Carol Parrish on Brace ya Self. Jamie Sanderson and Shandi know where to find the fish, with crew member Crystal Sanderson weighing in the biggest of 7 snapper, at 7.6kg and Amy Spicer had the heaviest kingfish out of 7 for the day, with a fish of 10.1kg. Day 2 was not much better on the sea but again we saw the fish on land again. Jill Wiggins on Add H2O had all 3 snapper prizes with fish ranging in weight from 2.72kg to 9.24kg, all caught on 10kg line. Of the 8 kingfish landed, Crystal on Shandi had the heaviest fish again, of 14.38kg. Yellowfin jumped on the hooks today, all in the mid-thirties weight range, with junior angler Rayne Blakeman on Choppa Gun landing the heaviest of 35.08kg. Carol Parrish managed to T&R a 2nd very important shark! Again, there were 3 marlin caught, one under-weight and one of a very good size and a Calcutta winner a stripy of 153.2kg caught on 24kg line by Jemma Parrish on Brace ya Self. The 3rd stripy was caught by Rayne Blakeman but they didn t manage to get a pin in it, but Rayne s fish was estimated to be about 85kg.
For the final prize giving, Susan Potier took the awards for the first billfish landed and weighed, and also for the fish with most IGFA points as her fish was caught on 15kg line and still beat Jemma s much bigger fish caught in 24kg line. Carol s 2nd shark won her a beautiful rose gold Mizzano watch from Showcase Jewellers in Kerikeri, and Jemma s big stripy won her the rest of the trophies and of course the huge Calcutta prize money. Besides the fishing there is also the fun element of the contest and on Friday we had a prize for the best team uniform which was won by an outstanding margin from the floor and the judges the fluorescent pink vests and sunnies of the Choppa Gun team. There was also a very amusing ditty from the girls on Bacchus which won them a bar tab amongst much laughter. On Saturday we judged the best fancy dressed team and we had firemen (fire persons??), police, builders, army, and the FBI. The clapometer and the judges decreed that the sexy police crew from Brenda L won the night and then DJ Venom cranked up the music and the girls and guys still had plenty of energy left to dance long into the night after fishing for 2 days! As ever we need to thank the sponsors for this contest who are always so generous to the ladies: Kilwell Sports, Icey-Tek (for the very sought after pink chilly bins), World Travellers in Kerikeri for a trip to Vanuatu, the Whangaroa Sport Fish Café, Hair by Chris, BHair, Kingfish Lodge, Snooks & Lola Fuller, Hansens, Burnsco, Mad Millies, Hooker Lures, Unichem Pharmacy in Kerikeri, Electrolux, Whangaroa Motel, Showcase Jewellers, Seamounts and Daryl & Linda from Darlin Imports.
