Fishing Local The record seeking team of Tim Carson and Rick Ashton fished with a purpose last Sunday, as the Australian salmon run continued around the Mewstones area. In what was a crowded stretch of water with congestion reminiscent of Cockburn Sound snapper nights, they successfully made claims for State, Australian and World records. Tim s fish (left) took just 19 minutes to reel in on 4kg lline. It tipped the scales at 5.85kg and is being claimed as a line class record for WA and Australia. Rick s fish is being claimed as an IGFA All Tackle World Record. The fish weighed in at 4.99kg and was caught on 8kg line. 4 th December 2014 Hook-Up Page 1

2 This takes to 4 the record salmon that have been caught by PGFC members in the past month with other claims by Rhyss Whittred and Sarah Coleman currently being processed. Samson fish are out there in numbers at present. Sharks have been spoiling the fun around the barges but one member fishing with Mills Charters on a wreck north west of Rottnest last weekend was treated to a 25kg fish followed by an 11kg specimen. They did not see a shark all day. Approaching the club on Tuesday 2 nd there was an overwhelming aroma of cooked meat in the air. It was master chef Smiddy and his offsider Jesse from the Smoke Shack excelling once again with their highest quality organic pork, chicken, beef, chorizo and Pacific salmon, smoking and cooking to a tee. A solid turnout for a very relaxed evening with 6 new members joining up on the evening including one with a trailer boat and two with 47 and 48 boats. Member Dylan Skinns who heads up marketing at Austral Fisheries made a presentation on his company s activities prawning in the Gulf of Carpentaria and deep water fishing for tooth fish in the Antarctic regions around Herd Island. As a measure of the interest generated, the crowd were silent throughout, being captivated by the images and story. He personally took all the images including the ones of 17m waves. Dylan sang the praises of the eating qualities of tooth fish marketed as Glacier 51 toothfish, which is now winning accolades around the world. He proved the eating quality it with Smiddy doing a quick hot smoke of some samples. To top it off he donated a side of tooth fish as a raffle prize which was won by Dan Hunt. 3 Unusual Catch Bob Burdinat, diving for early season crayfish around Rottnest last weekend (there are plenty of whites around), picked up what appears to be a Morton Bay Bug (Thenus Orientalis) or slipper lobster. Research suggests that they are found north of Shark Bay and are usually a by catch in prawn trawling operations, in other words on a sandy or muddy bottom. Must have had an identity crisis hanging out with rock lobsters in a reef environment! Crew Position If anyone is looking for a consistent, enthusiastic crew member for this season s events I am keen to learn and help the team wherever I can - happy to help with everything that goes with it including washing the boat and gear afterwards. For background: my fishing experience ranges from freshwater, to estuary to rock and surf and a few deep sea outings (jigging and bottom) as well; though I realise I have a lot to learn about game fishing. 4 City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series Big Guns The first of the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series will be held this weekend 6 th and 7 th December. A 10kg minimum line class event and dubbed the Big Guns, it will surely see plenty of samson fish and hopefully some of the bigger yellowfin and big-eye tuna that tend to inhabit our waters early in the season.
