Fishing Local Marlin at the Rottnest Trench appear to be prolific with many reports circulating of fish being raised and hooked up by members and non-members alike. Considering the number of boats fishing solely for billfish, it is reallly turning out to be a bumper season. Spanish mackerel are around with fish recently caught by landbased fishers at the north mole and by boat fishers trolling inshore. Social media reports indicate that schools of Australian salmon have also been active in the metro area. Quite a contradiction! Two standout captures in the last 2 weeks are Alex Kaiko s blue marlin, his first metro caught marlin and John Holmes blue marlin, his first ever marlin caught on Good Friday. Here is Alex s account: Due to weather and work commitments Brian Luecke and I hadn t been able to get out on the water for over a month. Given the weather Estimated 200kg blue marlin forecast for Sunday (29th Mar) we decided on a trip out to the trench to try our luck. We got the boat on the water and headed out enjoying the very favourable conditions. Along the way we stopped off for a quick bottom fish to try and catch some dinner so we would have something to show for the day s effort. Four drops got us a 52cm pinky and a nice 60cm red snapper. We had our feed so we headed to the FSC FAD. There were a couple of boats already there and we had timed our arrival perfectly. The boats that were there were catching mahi, we could see them jumping so we gave it a couple of passes with no luck. We decided to stop wasting time on the mahi and rigged up the gear for marlin. The conditions were perfect with a light breeze, we got the spread set and settled in for what we thought was the usual long wait. 9 th April 2015 Hook-Up Page 1

2 We were heading north to the PGFC FAD and passed by Recfishwest FAD to see some guys catching what looked to be very nice mahi. Continuing north, and after about a further 15 minutes, there was a very audible snap of a rubber band followed almost instantly by the sound screaming 24kg outfit. I looked out the back to see a marlin jumping to port at a very high rate and I knew we were on. We both leapt up to clear the deck. I had my short corner in and was hooking up the gimbal when I checked the reel and realised that the line was smoking off and there was only about 100m left. Brian hadn t managed to get the long rigger in yet, but I had to tell him to leave it and chase because what little line that was left was disappearing very quickly. Brian turned the boat and started to chase much to my relief because I reckon I only had about 20-30m of line left. As we chased the fish down we were given a great aerobatic display as the marlin headed west in front of us. I quickly recovered about 150 m of line and was able to get my gimbal on properly. I was now all set and still pumping out the belly when the line went slack and my heart sank. I kept winding in the hope that it had just turned, luckily that was the case and after gaining another 50m, the line started to tighten and I managed to get full pressure on the gear. I still had m of line out and the fish was deep. It was still taking line so I went to 13kg of drag in the hope of slowing it down. That s about all it did, slow it down. Alex s marlin being revived after a long battle So began a one and a half hour slog of backing down and circling to try and regain line. Brian did a great job driving the boat and I knew it was nearly over when the rubber band on the line came to the surface. It was still another ten minutes before we saw the fish and realised why it had taken so long, it was a beauty. Brian got the trace and we promptly had the tag into my first Perth metro blue marlin which we estimated to be around 200kg. After reviving the fish for about 30 minutes its colour came back and it started to headshake and kick, so we let it go and watched it swim away. As we were about to head home with smiles on our faces, we caught up with another boat that was trolling the area and found out that they had had a hook-up earlier which spooled them before they got their gear in, a situation that we had only just barely avoided with our fish. 3 Good Friday was indeed a good day for Glen Rattigan fishing on his sparkling 7.6m Wellcraft Southern Blue with crew member John Holmes. Leaving Cockburn PowerBoat Club ramp at 4am, they headed first for the All Marine Services FAD. Getting there in the half light they found plenty of 5-6kg mahi ready for to feed. John s marlin boatside Afer bagging 4, they riged up the 24kg marlin gear and headed north to the HYC FAD. Water temperatures were in the low 23 range. Passing the PGFC FAD they noticed heaps of mahis in the crystal clear water. Generally there was little to excite in the way of bait or birds although striped tuna were reported by others as schooling near the north wall. From HYC FAD and heading south, the 24kg outfit on the left rigger snapped into life in the 230m area just west of the line between FSC and All Marine Services FADs, an area that has been very productive during recent years. Keeping constant pressure on the fish estimated at between 80 and 100kg and behaving impeccably with only a couple of jumps, angler John Holmes had the tag in his first marlin after just 20 minutes before reviving it and releasing it for another day. A big day for the boys on the water running more than 100 Nm over 12 hours or so. Water temperature by the end of the day had increased to 24. The lure used was a Black Bart dark blue and black striped Hot Breakfast. Congratulations to skipper and angler. 9 th April 2015 Hook-Up Page 3

Last year, the fleet of 64 international teams with fishermen from 24 countries experienced one of the most epic sailfish bites in sport fishing history. Doubles, triples and quads came to the boats with surprising regularity and the teams learned the meaning of a hot bite PGFC is proud to have two teams representing the club at this year s Offshore World Championships in Costa Rica. The first invited team qualified with their victory at the 2014 Marlin Cup aboard Ashram and comprises Rhyss Whittred, Shane Anderson, Dave Thomson and Deon Visagie. Their progress can be followed on Facebook PGFC 2015 OWC. Having won their entry invitation at the 2014 Shimano WA Open, aboard Rock N Roll, the other team is led by skipper Brian Arnett.
