1 Perth Game Fishing Club Inc Postal Address: PO Box 57 North Beach 6920 Perth Game Fishing Club 2012 President: Rhyss Whittred In this issue: Shimano WA Open, Local Fishing, Club Championship Scores, Coming Events 11 th April 2012 Shimano WA Open The local golf club in its verdant surroundings provided the ideal venue for the social engagements; Friday evening s briefing night and Sunday night s presentation function. There is no doubt about the humour that emanates from the country folk which is matched by their hospitality. The mix of boats was five who motored up from the Perth metro area, four local boats and the remainder trailer boats from Perth, a total of 19. The briefing got the tournament off to a great start with some local pride at stake driving up the Calcutta funds. The sail-past and shotgun start off the Jurien Bay jetty was a spectacle for the onlookers lining the local town jetty as well as those on the boats. Boats were regaled in Shimano and PGFC flags as well as tag and capture flags flying from the out-riggers. The most photographed boat of the event, the Cabo 32 Xotica led the fleet in the round-up manned by the crew of last year s winning team. Paul Male on Polar left the field behind after the traditional shotgun start. The first morning s fishing was greeted by typical moderate south easterly winds changing later in the day to south westerlies. A swell of 3m prevented all but a few of the locals from trusting the south passage exit from the bay. Radio strength and interference which is apparently typical of the area resulted in little chit chat on the radio, but during the day 3 marlin hook-ups were called in from Centrelink, Xotica and Valkoista, all locally crewed boats. Xotica had their teaser destroyed in a triple pronged marlin attack, however they were unable to successfully hook the fish more than momentarily. Only Centrelink managed to tag their fish which despite their initial call of marlin while it was in the water, turned out to be a very large sailfish. All the billfish were raised in water depths around 50 m. Images from top. 2 Shortly after lines out, Jurien Bay Sea Rescue advised of a missing jet skier and asked for support in search and rescue. Centrelink, Crackawoody, Jelomi, Kokoda, Tom Cat, Valkoista Xotica and Yogi all helped out. The outcome was favourable with the jet-skier being blown onto a beach some kilometres north. At the same time Don Stander s Couta-Cat came across a small boat in difficulty and went into hazardous waters less than a metre and a half deep to tow in a dinghy without a radio. Good catches on many boats were a feature of the afternoon. At the weigh-station tags and capture forms for amberjack, mulloway, snapper, Spanish mackerel, striped tuna and wahoo were counted. Regrettably many fish were disqualified by small rule transgressions such as incorrect leader lengths. No formal events were conducted on Saturday evening as sleep deprivation from the previous night and long day kicked in. With lines in at 0600 the next morning the teams wanted to be there for the start. Local sponsor Sandpiper Tavern put on a great feed for 60 anglers before they headed off for bed. Sunday morning turned up a smaller swell but still choppy seas. The green water of the previous day had given away to cobalt blue and there was good bait and bird activity in waters to the north and north-west within about 15 Nm of the marina. A couple of boats were in fish all day and the results show it. Boats that went south and west saw some fish but were disappointed. An early lines out at 1500 to allow for the presentation night had boats scooting for home, many for trailering home and others to be cleaned up for a delayed departure. Sunday s catch was again diverse with mahi mahi, samson, Spanish mackerel, striped tuna and wahoo being tagged and weighed. The presentation night was again a success with all prizes not awarded being handed out in a free raffle to all the crews. No team went home empty handed. A real positive for the club and the tournament was the joining of 29 new members, most of whom were able to compete in the event. In summary, the trench and FADs were a bit quiet, but west end and in particular the south side of Rottnest were going off. Shark mackerel, southern bluefin and big striped tuna were all tagged. A diver at the FSC FAD at sunrise on Monday morning reported seeing 4 wahoo and there were mahi mahi also biting early. Despite temperatures of 24.1 and 25.0 during the day there was little or no current, and few fish were reported. Good news is that the PGFC is definitely in position although its satellite tracker has stopped reporting. Ben Weston s superb yellowfin tuna Shannon Wham's first mahi mahi Shannon Wham, Damien s sister was very proud to have caught her first mahi mahi over the Easter weekend. On 4kg tackle the fish went about 6 7 kg. Congratulations Shannon. Once through the snapper the mulloway took over with two fish of 17 kg and 19 kg being brought to the boat. Craig White on Seasport Charters Valkoista found bottom fishing slow but confirmed plenty of yellowfin tuna in the kg range in 50 m. Out wide he was reporting resurgence in temperatures with up to 25 being recorded. Several of the boats which motored up to Jurien for the Shimano WA Open took advantage of the good weather and fished up there over Easter. From Sangeeta Menon My biggest game fish. After fishing the Shimano WA Open in Jurien Bay the previous weekend and seeing what game fish were available to catch there, I was pretty happy when Alex Scholz (Rampage) offered Rhyss and I the use of his boat whilst it was still in Jurien Bay to fish on the Easter weekend. As it turned out Alex was able to join us for a quick trip and we experienced fantastic weather on the Sunday.With Alex driving out to the grounds, Rhyss, rigged up two 15 kg outfits and a shotgun 10kg outfit to have a go for some mackerel or tuna on the second bank in about 50m of water. We had 2 Richter skirts out and a red head Halco laser pro all swimming nicely at 8 knots. Sangeeta Menon's 17.8 kg yellowfin tuna The boys got me to put a rod belt on and get the chance at the first fish. The strike came pretty quickly and the reel was having a big screaming fit. I had never taken a fully loaded 15kg outfit out of a rod holder before and I was really quite anxious. Eventually after having my arms nearly pulled out of their sockets I managed to get myself set up and get stuck into what I was hoping would be a new species for me. I got the fish close enough to the boat in 20 minutes for Rhyss to get the leader but the fish had other ideas and took a dashing run trying to earn its freedom. Seeing that it was a quality yellowfin tuna renewed my energy to catch the fish and I worked harder again for a further 25 minutes to get it to the boat. Rhyss brought the fish close to the boat on the leader and an accurate gaff shot by Alex ensured the fish in the boat. Yippee my biggest game fish and a new species to my capture list. The fish weighed in at 17.8 kg gilled and gutted. 11 th April 2012 Hook-Up Page 4
