Fishing Local Dave Gray on Buddha was fishing the north side of Rottnest last weekend when he caught this beautiful early season mahi mahi in less than 40m of water. There was a lot of bait packed along the northern side of the island. There have also been reports of yellow fin tuna off Hillarys and also in Warnbro Sound this week. Dan Hunt has been cleaning up on the King George and whiting in the shallows inside Rottnest. The barges have been loaded with sambos but the men in grey suits have made fishing this area almost impossible already. 27 th November 2014 Hook-Up Page 1

2 Shark sightings have been on the increase over the last few weeks with a salmon fisherman at the Mewstones making the news when a white shark chased the salmon right to the boat and took a chunk out of the gunwale padding. The water on the SST charts is looking good for the upcoming Big Guns Tournament, the opening of the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series on 6 th December. There have been reports of small dollies arriving at the FADs already along with continuing reports of bird activity and small tuna in the 100m area behind Rottnest. The water is still quite dirty and the temperature is around 21 degrees at best inside the shelf. Crayfish are on the move with widespread catches from Mandurah to Mindarie with 20 a pot seeming to be the average for those on the sand. Bluewater Tackle has just landed a large range of jigs just in time for the upcoming finish of the demersal ban on the 15 th of December. Great time to get your lines re-spooled and to stock up on terminal tackle too. Richter Lures has launched a range of Bluewater Tackle exclusive lures with new colour patterns and eyes. They are selling fast so get in and check them out. They are stunning lures and have been proven performers in Exmouth. Recfishwest FADs Shark sightings have been on the increase over the last few weeks Recfishwest has advised that they deployed two FADs on Tuesday 25 th November. One is a floating unit, the other submerged. Details from the Recfishwest Media Release will be forwarded to members when available. Deckie Day The club is looking at running a deckie training day informally over the next few weeks. Anyone that is keen to learn the basics of outriggers, lures and some basic skills please contact the club at contact@pgfc.com.au. Membership Renewals Thanks to the 200 or so members who have paid their fees for Reminder notices costing the club about $1 a shot plus volunteer time have been sent out this week. Please send in your payments as soon as possible. If you don t have the details send a note to contact@pgfc.com.au or call the Treasurer on Crew Position If anyone is looking for a consistent, enthusiastic crew member for this season s events I am keen to learn and help the team wherever I can - happy to help with everything that goes with it including washing the boat and gear afterwards. For background: my fishing experience ranges from freshwater, to estuary to rock and surf and a few deep sea outings (jigging and bottom) as well; though I realise I have a lot to learn about game fishing. 3 World Record Claims The latter part of 2014 has produced an abundance of Australian salmon. Since the last Hook-Up two club members have applied for State, Australian and World records for the species. First up was Rhyss Whittred s capture on 7 th November and aclaim for a 5.8kg fish on 1kg line class, a classic catch in rough conditions where the fish played the game and kept away from reef. Caught around the Mewstones area, the fish was chasing the masses of mulies schooling there. Following up on 15 th Novembe, with a claim for a 5.45kg on 4kg Women s record was Sarah Pitman who captured a similarly well fed Australian Salmon. Congratulatoins to both anglers, a great way to start the new club year. 5 City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series Big Guns The first of the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series will be held on 6 th and 7 th December. A 10kg minimum line class event and dubbed the Big Guns, it will surely see plenty of samsonfish and hopefully some of the bigger yellowfin and big-eye tuna that tend to inhabit our waters early in the season. Then there is always the chance of a marlin which are certainly not unknown as early as October. Details on page 8.
