Fishing Salmon run begins The traditional Easter start to the Perth salmon season has got underway with a bang, with reports of fish in Cockburn Sound generating great excitement. Rhyss Whittred, Viv Lopez, Dave Littlejohn and Albina Zawadka aboard Ashram, braved the cool blustery conditions on Easter Monday, finding plenty of action in the area between Mewstone and The Stragglers and avoiding the estimated 50 boats in the Seal Rock / Rowboat Rock area. Trolling with small Halco Laser Pros, custom Richter Lures and chrome slices, all produced the goods on 3 and 4kg gear. Viv (left) and Albina, chilling a couple of salmon Dave described the technique of hooking up and playing a fish on braid maybe 10m from the boat before casting lures into the school as being very successful. Fish varied from 68 to 74cm, calculated as 4.3 to 5.5kg using the PGFC tables (See page 4). Great fish for light tackle that are sure to be a target for those fishing the Ladies and Juniors Day on May 6 th. 21 st April 2017 Page 1

2 Salmon run continues Meanwhile Andy Ziepe has not only conned a mate into taking him salmon fishing in Geographe Bay, but has successfully cooked their catch in 4 different ways, all to his team s delight. Most people prefer to cook them with a brick and choose the brick to eat. Following is Andy Ziepe s story of the weekend, note there are no photos of cooked salmon or the consequences thereof! Over the Easter break fellow member Michael Sladen and I took our families down to Busselton for some well-earned R and R. Michael brought down his new boat an as yet unnamed 27 foot Glacier Bay catamaran (which he has threatened to name Twin Peaks, much to his wife s horror)! The first few days were very unproductive. Squid are often in almost plague proportions less than a mile straight out from the mooring at this time of year. But this year even Michael s mate, Giff, the squid whisperer, turned up doughnuts not once but a few days in a row. The weather gods forecasted fishing with a high chance of drinking for Good Friday so we took them up on their offer with an esky full of bait and beer to try some of Michael s marks in about 27m of water. We may as well have been drifting over the moon because we turned up zilch despite Michael s Furuno displaying some promising structure. Plan B was to stop drifting, throw out the pick and to see if we could berley something up. The only thing remotely fishy to come near our berley trail was a pair of undersized pinkies. In fact undersized is an understatement because I don t think they would have gone size joined together! It wasn t looking good and I was wondering if mutton-bird would have been acceptable fare for a Good Friday feed. Bugger, now I've caught it, Dad's going to make me eat it. Drew Ziepe Josh Ziepe with a healthy salmon prior to release Mike wasn t keen on plan C because he had heard that salmon were terrible eating, he didn t have a cat and quite liked his neighbours. Nonetheless I convinced him to give it a bash because at least we had a smoker with us to try making them more palatable. So we cranked up the twin 150 Honda s and bombed over to the Cape Naturaliste lighthouse. Within 5 minutes of trolling we had a triple hook-up. Two busted off due to incorrectly adjusted drags and hooks pulled on the third at the boat. The mutton-birds were looking very nervous at this stage. Re-rigged with drags now refined, we put the lines back out and it wasn t long before we hooked up again. Mike and his mate got theirs to the boat relatively quickly on the bottom bashing braid whilst my 2kg outfit was struggling against a decent fish. 21 st April 2017 Page 2

3 Patience paid off and I got mine on board. It was a decent fish but not quite a record. A quick check of the IGFA app and weight/length charts suggests the fish needed to go 80cm to be a potential record on 2kg. This one was north of 70cm but nowhere near the 80cm needed to make it worth keeping as a whole fish to bring back for John Webber to weigh. Collectively the mutton-birds breathed a huge sigh of relief. If anyone wants a YouTube video on how to dress a mutton-bird I am happy to share! Next task was to convince Mike that salmon are at least palatable so that he would take me out again for a day specifically to target them. We decided upon cooking three ways: pan fried in butter, beer battered, and our back-up, the trusty smoker (which Mike informed me is not failsafe because even though he is far from a fish snob it couldn t make him want to eat Queen Snapper again). Well, Mike was a convert, not only was it palatable all three ways it was actually pretty good. So that locked us in for full day of trolling with my two sons Drew and Josh on Easter Monday. There was such carnage in Eagle Bay that even the herring were beaching themselves attempting to escape the salmon. Double hook-up after double hook-up ensued (we only decided to fish two rods this time), until we had somewhere between 15 and 20 (keeping 5) for a very enjoyable day. We added a fourth recipe to our repertoire; Thai Green Salmon curry. I don t know why they get such a bad rap, but I guess that will leave more for the rest of us. Other metro activity. Luke Ryan had some good fortune when he and friend Meagan took to jigging in the depths off Two Rocks on his first outing following recovery from serious surgery. The results included a shark mackerel from the bottom in 40m of water for Luke and an 11kg dhuie for Meagan. Reports of species normally caught in the north of the state have been coming in, including red emperor off Rottnest, suggests the water temperatures at depth are still high. 4 Measure and Release It is timely to revisit the option of measure and release of salmon (and other species) particulaly for the benefit of newer members was a cracker year for Australian salmon in the Perth metro area and southwards. Early in 2014, the tagging authority that the GFAA clubs use (NSW DPI), decided that fish smaller than 60cm should not be tagged. Perth Game Fishing Club took the initiative and prepared tables for all species that we commonly encounter and produced length versus weight tables. These were implemented effective on 1 st October 2014, the beginning of the 2015 season. Simply, if you wish to gain tournament or club championship points for line class fish that are less than 60 cm long, measure them on a brag-mat, photograph and complete a measure and release card. If the fish is in excess of 60 cm (yellowtail kingfish 70cm) you have the option of tagging the fish instead of, or as well as, measuring the fish before release. 5 FADs As in the previous Hook-Up, solid rather than frenzied activity is being reported from the Rottnest Trench FADs with good size mahi mahi being taken. All FADs remain in their deployed positions. The ongoing voyage of the All Marine Services FAD following its departure on 28 th December, is shown on the image alongside. It is now approximately 500nm west of the coast a little north of Kalbarri. This image is from 8pm on 20 th April.
