City Beach Builders City Beach Builders has continued as the Grand Prix Series naming rights sponsor for The club extends their sincere thanks to Brian and Sue Connor for the support of the club in both the inaugural year and next. Brian has fished some of the club competitions aboard various club members boats and has also been actively growing City Beach Builders with a new office currently under construction at Home Base Wembley. Commenting on the continuing relationship with Perth Game Fishing Club Brian said: I am extremely pleased to continue my sponsorship with the PGFC for Construction on David and Robin Gray s new home commenced last month and is coming along nicely. Ben Weston s home completed in 2012 won the West Australian Building Design awards for the architect Yael K, and as the builder I would like to think we have had a fair part to play in that award. this location, to further advertise our association with the club and promote PGFC in general. We will circulate more on this at the opening and club members will be invited to the opening. Free beer if nothing else! Thousands of people visit this centre on a weekly basis, so we are hoping this will be good for both parties. I have not been able to attend as many events on the fishing calendar as I would have liked, so I am hoping I can get myself or Peter Dall to more events next season. I greatly enjoyed the days I did fish with my young son and the wonderful hospitality shown by the club and its members. I have known Ben Weston now for 7 years and I know his passion for fishing and life in general will serve the club well. How any of these guys hold down a day job I don t know, as they put so much into the club. I think Peter Coote has a lot to answer for also! You now have someone with building expertise in and around the club, please take advantage of it. I would love to assist any member, even if it is just some advice you are looking for. I hope to see you all around the club next season. We are moving up to our new office in Home Base Wembley, due to open in early November. There will be a window front display of PGFC in 2 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

President s Message Rhyss Whittred This is my last report as Club President. It gives me great satisfaction to have handed the position over to Ben Weston for the next couple of years. There are fresh faces on the committee, along with Tim Carson taking on the role of Vice President, Ben has recruited some energetic and passionate members to support his goals and club direction. Of course there is the well-grounded Peter Coote and John Webber by Ben and Tim s side and I am positive the club will get stronger and stronger over their terms on the committee. The club is in a wonderful position with membership growth at all-time numbers of more than 360. It will be great to see the members get behind Ben and his team and support the club even more. Dr Kim Hames has continued as our Patron and has vowed to get involved with a bit more fishing this season. Royal Perth Yacht Club Commodore, Barry Honey, has got down to club for a function here and there and between himself, Stuart Walton (RPYC GM) and Harbourmaster, Clem Rogers we continue to have fabulous club facilities and continued support. During the season quite a few marlin were raised and hooked up locally, with some members getting their first marlin tag. We also had an abundance of marlin in more exotic locations that kept many of our members satisfied with their marlin fishing. Members visited Exmouth, Rowley Shoals, Dampier, Cairns, Port Stephens, Bermagui, Fiji, Hawaii and a host of other exceptional game fishing destinations. Their angling results were outstanding with many taking away awards for their efforts. Who could forget the crowning of Craig White as the world champion in Costa Rica this year? What a result! Damien Wham, who loves fishing the Dampier classic, was rewarded with the champion boat accolade. I encourage our members to jot down their stories and add some photos so we can circulate and whet the appetites of our less travelled members. Holding an annual tournament in Jurien Bay was a success and the club gained many new members and sponsors. The next in February 2014, promises to be bigger and better Our club s commitment to delivering value to all of our sponsors has been high on our agenda and both Alex Scholz and Ben Weston have put a huge effort into this area. Discussions with sponsors have given an indication that we are achieving this goal. This has been supported by the ongoing commitments of City Beach Builders, Cape Bouvard, FLIR, Maxsea, Mining and Hydraulics, Bluewater Tackle, Shimano, Northport Marine Services, Seasport Charters, MTU and On Strike charters as well as FAD and club sponsors to continue their involvement for the coming season. Wherever possible please support our sponsors, their products and services. In closing I would like to thank you, our club members, the committee and our sponsors for supporting me over my years as President. Rhyss Whittred President Letter from the Editor This is the 13th edition of Strike in this format; the first was a 40 page issue in October There were 2 editions in each of 2004 & 5. It s great to look back at some of the old ones, the contributed stories are different but equally interesting and express the same passions for fishing that are expressed in the stories that follow in these pages. The fact is that the club is going from strength to strength and this is evident in the comparison with earlier Strikes. Missing this year is separate reporting of juniors, because there have been very few junior captures, next year hopefully more. Similarly there is quite a lot about the FADs because they are a big part of the club s life. Gathering of content for the 2015 edition has begun, thanks to those mentioned hereabouts for their help, and keep in touch with any news whether local or from afar. The describing of organised events has become more prominent as have the events themselves and there is a conscious effort to balance content with club activities. Peter Coote Editor 5

A great night was had by all especially the members who took away trophies from the Annual Club Awards and cheques from the 2013 City Beach Builders competition. The AQWA venue was superb, what a great way to start an evening, walking through the tunnel in the marina and ogling all the edible fish and looking with dismay at the diverse species of tropical and temperate sharks, stingrays, turtles and other species. The venue for the dinner was well presented and the food was excellent. President Rhyss Whittred at his last official social occasion as president took the floor with the microphone as MC. After introducing dignitaries including Patron Dr Kim Hames and RPYC Commodore Barry Honey and their wives, he acknowledged the many sponsors present, life members and the 2 tables of Jurien Bay members who had made the trip down especially. On a more poignant note Rhyss made special mention of the two members that passed away during the year, Ivan Quartermaine and more recently Ivan Erceg whose widow Hazel, was present. Patron Kim Hames spoke briefly about the club and his hope to participate more in future years, before a 25 year membership pin was awarded to long standing member Brian Arnett who missed last year s presentation because of a fishing commitment. Mark Jarrett with one of his many awards on the night The raffle prizes were outlined, a Bradley Smoker donated by The Smoke Shack and a selection of Richter Lures. A ladies door prize of a gold bracelet kindly donated by Ross Ezekiel Jewellers was passed around the room and was eventually won in the draw by Josephine Fitzpatrick. Craig White gave a rundown on the success he and Ivan Erceg had in Costa Rica for the World Championships with some previously unknown descriptions of their antics. Brian Connor the principal of City Beach Builders was represented by Peter Dall who assisted with the awards. Recipients of the cash prizes were very happy with the outcomes and Mark Jarrett in particular with Champion Angler and Champion Boat is expected to shout the bar at the next social function. 6 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

Next was the Annual Club awards which turned up some unexpected results and some captures that were quite significant including Ben Weston s award of the prestigious Michael Officer Trophy with an early season marlin followed just a few hours later with another. Ben shared the story of the capture to the delight of all. The Roland Smith Trophy for the largest game fish went to Johnno Wroth for a whopping 43 kg yellowfin tuna. Jim Ireland took out the Neil Patrick Trophy for the most marlin outside Perth waters for the second year in succession with a total of 8 fish; a margin of just one fish over Jim Stevenson. The closeness of the result for Champion Boat was highlighted when the president got both teams up together before announcing Rock N Roll as Champion Boat and Reel Addiction II as runner up. Brian Arnett was awarded Champion Angler ahead of Mark Jarrett and team mates Dave Gray and Ben Weston tied in the quest for the Carl Georgeff Patron s Trophy with 6 species each. Brenden Fitzsimmons and Dwane Hunt won the raffle prize of the Bradley Smoker, a prize that was the envy of all at the function. The Richter Lures were won by Meesha Watson adding to the Reel Addiction team s haul, and Mark Maher s donated 5 IGFA memberships were won by other members. The raffle raised significant funds towards the expenses of the evening. 9 Shimano WA Open Rottnest Island 23rd & 24th March The weeks prior to this year s Shimano WA Open saw an unusually high number of marlin raised with black, blue and striped marlin as well as large yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel and wahoo making an appearance. It all augured well for the premier PGFC competition which coincided with the 6th event of the 2013 City Beach Builders Club Championship Series. The event exceeded expectations, with a final marlin tally of 43 raised, 32 hooked up, 4 tagged and 1 weighed. These are numbers which have not been since the last big run of marlin in the late 1990 s. The 19 boats competing were treated to fine weather, clean, warm water and an opportunity to find marlin from the southern to the northern extremities of the area typically fished. While marlin were raised from well to the north of the Hillarys Yacht Club FAD, miles to the south of the All Marine Services FAD and west past the 1000 m line, most were found in an inconspicuous patch of water around 25 square miles in size centred a few miles west and north-west of the FSC FAD. The competition started on the Saturday with the traditional round-up of boats led by last year s winner Xotica and the salute taken by the club President, Rhyss Whittred in Thomson Bay. The sail past was followed by a shotgun start and then the race was on to the deeper water and FADs. The 4000 horsepower Bertram 630 Cookie was challenged by numerous smaller more nimble boats including the 8.6 m centre console Double Lucky who were all able to take a more direct route through shallower water around the island, but most were quickly overtaken on the run out. There were a few missed hook-ups and dropped fish of mahi mahi and the like around the FADs early and the first boat to call in the successful capture Zeyad El-Brollosy of a line class fish was Rock N Roll who seems to have a mortgage on this award. Reports of marlin being raised filtered in ahead of the 11:00 radio sched, but it was mid afternoon that the action really got going. As with the Marlin Cup at Jurien Bay a month earlier, a visit from a whale shark entertained the crew of Buddha for some time on the Saturday. These animals and the presence of wahoo must be some of the best indicators of marlin that we get in Perth metro waters. There were several multiple raisings and hook ups of marlin on Saturday but unfortunately most resulted in lost fish for a variety of reasons. Reel Screamer, a Precision 17 recently arrived from Queensland had a double hook up on this, their first outing, followed by a third small striped marlin which resulted in 1 tagged fish. Patrick Kirk aboard The Buffer Zone also tagged an early marlin on the Saturday. Deon van der Westhuizen aboard Striker had a strong day on mahi mahi as did crew members and small fry Zeyad El- Brollosy with his potential (later to be confirmed) Australian record mahi on 3 kg. Striker won the day on points but the day prize went to Jelomi that sustained a full speed strike to the marlin board from a raging blue marlin of around 150 kg. Camaraderie on the fuel jetty was followed by an evening meal at the Hotel Rottnest which was a relatively quiet affair with all the crews expecting a big day on Sunday with so many fish around. Photo Hesham El-Brollosy Sunday was all that it was expected to be after Saturday s action, with an early start for all boats and a few early calls of marlin being raised with at last some sticking. The highlight of the morning being a pack of 4 striped marlin that crashed the spread of Double Lucky causing mayhem for all onboard. 9

After a long day on the Saturday it was finally time for Team Bertram on Cookie to get into the action going on blue marlin for the day. The tagged fish was a special one for crew member Rick Ashton as it was his first marlin and to top it off it was also his birthday. Another much larger fish was dropped after it had almost emptied the spool of 24 kg line and charged airborne towards other boats with them having to be warned off. Laith Rickman fishing on Edgewater pulled a 300 kg bronze whaler out of a school of striped tuna on 24 kg, tagging it after an hour. Wahoo that were weighed created interest because of the disparity in weight of similar length fish. Prior to, during and since the Shimano WA Open, the FSC FAD has appeared to be something of a centre of attention. Matt Kleczkowsi, a skilled photographer and marine biologist jumped into the water each day on the FSC FAD and got photos of the activity. Aside from literally hundreds of mahi mahi swimming at depths to 20 m, wahoo in the kg range were present in small numbers. FSC FAD - image Matt Kleczkowski Angler Deon van der Westhuizen triumphed over Ben Weston by only 2 points, 910 to 908. The photographic prize was won by Dave Gray for the picture below. Presentation night, just 2 nights after the event had most teams represented and, as has been the case for most of the comps in recent years, it could have been anyone s event. The Champion Boat by the small margin of 173 points was Buddha from Striker, and the Champion Dave Gray 10 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

2013 City Beach Builders Competition The concept of running a monthly competition was first raised in a committee meeting early in After much deliberation the details were thrashed out in time for the third Sunday in October 2012 to be the first event to be run. In simple terms the concept was to run a standalone monthly competition which was to run on the third Sunday of each month, sharpening up of some rules; social activities afterwards and awards at the end of the season, recognising members and getting good exposure and value for sponsors. The club s Opening Weekend, the Bertram Marlin Cup and Shimano WA Open were to be included in the event list. The inclusion of a no postponement clause in the series led to 4 events being cancelled due to unfavourable weather, however the participation levels particularly in the mid-season period was strong, tapering off after the FADs were recovered and the weather cooled. The results for the year were: Champion Boat Reel Addiction II Skipper - Mark Jarrett Runner up Champion Boat Champion Male Angler Champion Female Angler Champion & Runner Up Junior Angler Kerry Ann Skipper - Dwayne Lawrence Mark Jarrett 4500 Points Sangeeta Menon 750 Points Runner Up Champion Male Angler Runner Up Champion Female Angler Drew Ziepe and Zeyad El-Brollosy 5750 Points 3000 Points Dwayne Lawrence 3000 Points Lisa Powell 225 points Tie on 100 Points each Awards City Beach Builders Competition Champion Boat $1800 Runner up Champion Boat $900 Champion Angler $900 Runner up Champion Angler $500 Bluewater Tackle Champion Female Angler Prize $900 Runner up Female Angler $500 Champion Junior Angler $300 Runner Up Junior Angler $200 Bluewater Tackle has not only returned as the club s preferred tackle dealer, but has upgraded its sponsorship to Platinum level. 15 CITY BEACH BUILDERS 2014 GRAND PRIX SERIES A refreshed version of the City Beach Builders Championship Series is to run in 2014, known as the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series. Similar in competition format to last year s Championship Series, the calendar is fixed with no postponement options. There have been slight changes in the procedures and rules. To make the series reward consistency and effort, the major change is in the scoring. This is designed to avoid the scenario where one lucky fish capture at any time of the year can blitz the field leaving it unattractive or pointless for many to compete. the Grand Prix system will be used, giving points on an event basis, 25 points for the highest fish score, 20 points for second and so on. Tied scores will result in the higher position score being given to both contenders. Monthly Events: Minimum score 5 points for nominating and responding to radio sched. Yearly score: A tie will result in share of prizes Angler awards: Calculated on same basis as boat scores, below 15th place participation points only awarded Rather than count points based on individual aggregate of fish scores throughout the year, All fish scores will continue to be included in the Annual Club Championship as previously. 16 2013 Bertram Marlin Cup 23rd & 24th February - Jurien Bay In the lead up to the weekend, weather forecasts had been between OK and not so good. Day one served up SSE winds of perhaps 15 Kts with a moderate swell increasing offshore. At about noon the weather moderated for an hour or so but it then came in with a fierce south westerly with increasingly large swells well offshore. The 2013 Bertram Marlin Cup was run in the mid-west coastal township of Jurien Bay some 200 km north of Perth on 23rd and 24th February. It has been run and won and what a great comp it was. 23 boats is a good start and most of them were crewed to the limit, a total of 96 anglers nominated. The fleet of boats participating came from all over and by many means. Three motored up from Fremantle, two motored down from Geraldton, 4 bigger trailer boats arrived on big trailers pulled by serious vehicles. A mix of members who had fished the Shimano WA Open comp at Jurien last year and a smattering of new members made for a diverse group of competitors. The spontaneous humour of the locals provided a background for the briefing night which included team introductions, distribution of sponsor and information grab bags, and the raffle of some great prizes including a 120 qt Yeti Cooler. The evening ended at a reasonable time for most, but not all teams, keen to get out on the water early on Saturday. It was in these early conditions when the Bertram Marlin Cup was won. At around 1020, Reel Addiction II s crew were relaxing with light gear out looking for yellowfin, wahoo or whatever, when an 8 kg outfit went off. Skipper and angler Mark Jarrett called it as a yellowfin and got the surprise of the weekend when the fish surfaced near the boat as a small black marlin. Hoisted aboard briefly for a photo it swam away strongly after being tagged. Ultimately it gave Reel Addiction II and Mark Jarrett the full suite of awards except the most tagged fish. 16 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

Other boats raised marlin but none was successful in getting a hook-up let alone a tag. Other fish weighed included amberjack, samson, mahi mahi, mulloway, yellowfin tuna and mackerel. As usual the Saturday night festivities were subdued compared with the previous night, with one large crew retiring from fishing by 1 in the afternoon and not surfacing until the following morning. A morning which greeted the fleet with similar windy conditions but a little less swell. Many boats, in the hope of getting at least 2 marlin to figure in the prizes fished for marlin exclusively all day, others, such as local boat Kerry Ann fished lighter tackle and species for points that eventually paid off for them. A lot of fish were caught on the day - mackerel, yellowtail kingfish, mahi mahi, samson, amberjack, wahoo, striped tuna and yellowfin tuna. Michael Jarrett with the winning Marlin At the final count the solitary marlin won the Bertram Marlin Cup, the invitation to the Offshore World Championships, and champion boat and angler points. Dwayne Lawrence on his boat Kerry Ann won the most tagged fish award with 8 fish, a very creditable performance given the conditions and the fact Kerry Ann was the smallest boat in the competition. Brett Martin the skipper and Dwayne also enjoyed the spoils of winning the impromptu Calcutta set up by local boats at the briefing. The Champion Junior and Female prizes were not awarded as there were no captures in these classes, and the less than coveted NAFA Award was won by Cookie. Thermal night vision cameras can help you to find a person in the water faster than any other night vision technology. That s why more Coast Guards, Police Agencies, and Militaries around the world put their trust in FLIR for search and rescue than all other brands combined. Thermal night vision systems from FLIR are easy to use and require no training. Unlike radars, GPS systems and digital chart plotters, the images thermal cameras produce are intuitive and instantly easy to understand. If you can watch TV, you can use a FLIR. FLIR s fixed maritime thermal cameras complement other on-board electronics suite like nothing you could imagine: GPS and chart plotters tell you where you are and where you going; radars alert you to nearby vessels; but nothing lets you see what s out there like a FLIR thermal night vision camera. Once you pilot a boat with a FLIR installed, you ll never want to be without one again. You can do lots of different things with FLIR s line of maritime thermal night vision cameras. They all let you see clearly in total darkness, but you can also get colour or lowlight cameras, gyro-stabilization, radar interfacing and other helpful features. And it s not just a matter of big cameras going on big boats; it s more a matter of what you need it to do. How far away do you need to see? Do you need to install it on an on-board network? Are you going to interface it with your other on-board systems? No matter what kind of boating you enjoy or what kind of boat you have, FLIR has the maritime thermal imager to meet your needs: from an ultra-compact handheld to longrang, multi-sensor fixed vision systems. Good things come in small packages 178 mm MU-/ MV-Series FLIR MLS-/ MS-Series Introducing the new and very small MD-Series fixed mounted thermal night vision camera at 178mm it might be only half the size of its bigger M-Series stablemate but it packs a punch way above its weight and is very, very affordable. Topping out the new FLIR maritime range is the Gyro-stabilised ultra-long-range multi-sensor MU/ MV-Series thermal night vision for the ultimate day-night system which can identify a small vessel at 15,000m. 20 Exmouth Charter Fishing Capt Josh Bruynzeel - On Strike Charters What a season it has been! Our PGFC season starts in October so I thought we would offer you an insight into what has happened up here in Exmouth over the last year. With EGFC s (Exmouth Game Fishing Club s) competition in October 2012 we started preparing for a run of sailfish to enter the Gulf, we fished the three day tournament with three PGFC members on board and took out Champion Boat overall with 28 sailfish tags over three days. PGFC member Johnno Wroth took out Champion Angler with 11 tags. The action continued well into November with us being distracted from catching sailfish by numbers of blue marlin that were lurking out wide. November s action was epic with 6-7 shots a day at big blue marlin many of which were touching that 500 lb mark. The subject of blue marlin is an interesting one with many older stalwarts of both the PGFC and EGFC explaining that this is the best blue marlin season for a long time. I have an opinion on the blue fishery here and believe they have always been here. The concentrated effort of some charter boats and some switched on locals have found the blues to be prevalent. Is it just a coincidence that when we all started targeting them they showed up? I think not. A couple of interesting captures on blues come to mind over the last year, one of our biggest, a 500 lb fish was caught on a skipping gar on 15 kg spin gear, truly a spectacle. Having more than one blue up at a time is also an interesting common occurrence, with striped marlin and sails known for their pod attacks having multiple blues in the spread is a sight to behold! babies and they are world famous for being rock solid and their fishability. On Strike II was launched. In February the blue run continued with many large fish around, and the small black marlin and sailfish starting to keep us busy inshore when the weather did not permit trips out wide. Taking the measurements of one large blue we caught had the weight estimated at 272 kg (599 lb) the angler took 3 1/2 hours to subdue this fish on stand up 37 kg gear! March saw Gamex and many competitors enter town, loads of big blues were caught along with blacks and sails, another great event every PGFC member should experience on their own boat or mine! Black marlin, blue marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, GTs, red bass, wahoo and mahi all put in an appearance in April and May; with typical glorious weather the fish bit well. June saw the craziest Spaniard bites we have ever seen (or maybe we are getter better at it!) we trolled natural baits with astonishing results, there are a couple of PGFC members floating around with some cheeky photos they took of the rigged baits, something you can definitely utilise on metro mackerel, especially when you want to target the larger fish in the school! July we had a great run of small blacks and sailfish as the big blues went a little quiet with the cooler water temps. PGFC members Jim Stevenson and Terry Meakins aboard Winora fished with us for two days releasing three blacks and two sails under cloudy skies. August again hailed the start of a massive surge of black marlin and sailfish inshore, with August 2012 still in our December saw the Heavy Tackle tournament in Exmouth which was won by the PGFC vessel Winora the boys did well in extreme conditions, catching some great fish! Our 30 ft sportfisher was dwarfed by the swell and we had some big blue bites but failed to keep the hooks in any over the three days: but we did catch a beautiful striped marlin, caught and tagged by another PGFC member, Gabriel Gomez. January had me on a plane and arriving in Perth where we purchased a 40ft O Brien Game boat, anyone who has fished Cairns has probably fished of one of these 20 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

memories with over 150 billfish released in that month we were hoping for another big month. The fish came on, but not as strong, the weather also hampered us but we released well over 100 billfish, predominately big sails! We ventured wide to the Monte Bello islands with friends in September. Raising 16 billfish in one single day on the trip set the tone for the rest of the trip. GTs, Spaniards, black marlin, sailfish, red bass and a very upset crew after pulling a hook on a very large dogtooth tuna after a gruesome battle on 37 kg tackle. Constant evolution of techniques and fishing styles keep us catching fish all year, we use the latest in satellite imagery and marine electronics to find pelagics. up to here in Exmouth, we have just finished another tournament winning the Champion Boat for the Billfish section (marlin and sails combined), and coming runner up in the sailfish section again with PGFC members on board. Stay tuned for info about our week long charters aboard On Strike II to the Monte Bello islands. This area is a truly untouched area and trout and crayfish are on the menu most evenings! I hope to see you up here soon, and remember to let us know you are a PGFC member for a 10% discount off your booking! Onstrike Charters has been a strong supporter of PGFC and provides the club with awards including charters for annual presentations. I hope this has been a bit of an insight of what we get 21

Dampier Classic 2013 Damien Wham This is the fifth annual report on the Dampier Classic that Damien Wham has filed. The tournament, run by King Bay Game Fishing Club attracts scores of boats and hundreds of anglers and is an important feature on the game fishing calendar in the north west. The comp is well run and allows anglers to fish around the clock. It is open to all WAGFA affiliated anglers, which includes all PGFC members. Regularly the weather conditions are tough, prompting skipper Cameron to comment one year that when the outriggers are touching the water, the obvious solution is not to seek shelter but to reposition the outriggers. They have captured their share of bad luck too. In 2012, after many years of extraordinary effort they came home in second place. In August this year they went one better. The Dampier Classic beckoned and it was that time of the year again to jump on a plane alongside the hi-vis clad FIFO passengers and head to Karratha for the 2013 competition. Arriving in Karratha late on Wednesday afternoon we dumped our belongings at skipper Cameron Marshall s and took off to the briefing which was held at the King Bay GFC club house in Dampier. With the briefing done it was back to Cameron s house to have a few quiet ones and plot our strategies for the next four days. As we normally do, we packed the boat and left at noon Thursday and made our way up to Flying Foam Passage finding a sheltered bay to camp the night. The forecast for the next three days was for strong morning easterlies, not too encouraging for open water billfish, so the decision was made to fish for sharks in the mornings until the winds eased. On the first morning we didn t have wait too long, managing to tag five whalers. A thrill of the morning was witnessing a mackerel leap 6 m into the air smashing bait. In the afternoons when the winds allowed we were able to get to our preferred spots around the archipelago where we caught mackerel, long tail tuna, barracuda, trevally, queen fish and what was probably the highlight of the trip a few cobia that were chasing manta rays around in the shallows. We repeated this morning / afternoon routine for the next two days as well as spending every night fishing for sharks. I managed to tag my first tiger shark and Darren caught two impressive hammer heads, one being 200 kg and the other around 300 kg with a dorsal fin close to a metre high. 24 Mackerel Damien Wham - image Cameron Marshall On the last day, needing a big point scoring fish it was time to go bill fishing and the weather was perfect. Lines were in for barely five minutes before I was into our first black marlin which unfortunately dropped the hooks but we did go on to tag three others in the next hour. The fishing slowed down a little but we managed a few more billfish and a first for Glen - a feisty little sailfish. Sailfish Cameron Marshall and Glen Rattigan - image Damien Wham With only a few scoring hours left we decided to head in and try a few channel markers on the way to the gantry where Glen was able to tag nice tiger shark. With the boat back on the trailer and tag cards double checked and handed in it was time to sit back have a beer and hope we had done enough. Sitting down at the Presentation Night the nerves were shot but I was feeling confident that we had just done enough to do one better than last year. Reading out the boat names from the top ten they got to third place Svengali and the excitement was building. They announced Oh Bugga as runner up and the one we had been waiting to hear Top Shelf champion boat. 10% off For PGFC members Kitchen Tops Bathroom vanities Alfresco BBQ Custom stone work Granite Pavers WA STONE PTY LTD WA Stone provides a wide range of stone products which are manufactured to a high standard whilst still maintaining extremely competitive prices, we specialize in Granite, Marble, Caesar stone, Essa stone and various other available man made products. 26 Deepwater Daytime Broadbill Fishing The crew aboard Neil Patrick s Safari II may just have opened up a new fishery. One of the highlights of 2013 was the capture in mid August of a broadbill swordfish by Ben Patrick aboard the boat. This is the first recorded daytime capture of this species by a PGFC member off our coast. Fishing in 550 m the fish hooked up in 15 minutes and took just 25 minutes to get boatside. Weighing in at 28 kg on 37 kg line it was caught to regulations, but unfortunately did not go line class. The crew of Neil Patrick, Tim Carter, Bob McCarthy, Jim Stevenson and Ben Patrick fished for another 3 hours and had one rasped leader but did not hook up or detect the bite. Ben s comments were that it was a great day. We did remember the fish on Gerry O Loughlin s boat (around 15 years ago) but as far as we know this is the first daytime deep-drop broadbill on game fishing tackle at the trench. Looking forward to getting out there again! Broadbill swordfish are most often caught at night, but in recent years recreational fishers particularly off the east coast of USA and the north island of New Zealand have fished deepwater during the day for very considerable success. 28 2013 in Jurien Bay With limited opportunities chasing billfish due to our busy charter schedule, we still managed to raise 14 bills with 10 captures ranging in size from 35kg to 150kg. Our hook-ups were wide spread with our shallowest fish coming from 40m deep about 2 miles from the back of Seaward ledge. The FADs were deployed in December and had fish on them within days, as the season progressed the mahi mahi grew considerably, by August the average size was around 9 kg with plenty around kg, some of the biggest mahi I have seen in the area. Live bait, Ricter Hokzheads, stick baits and knife jigs were all working well. There were plenty of small wahoo sitting deeper on the FADs which had great delight in biting of our jigs. Spanish mackerel were once again wide spread with some epic sessions early morning out on the banks. Amberjacks, samson fish and yellowtail kings were plentiful throughout the year with the standout being a 30+kg amberjack and a 23 kg yellowtail. Tuna were quieter this year, most of the yellowfin we caught were in the deeper water over the shelf, skipjack were wide spread but down in numbers with very few southern bluefin caught. The stand out for the season was the amount of cobia around, the biggest being a 23.7 kg and a 27 kg caught on jig using my Stella 5000 with PE2 line. Jurien Bay has again lived up to its reputation as a great sportsfishing destination with plenty of baldchin groper, snapper and dhufish offering an enjoyable alternative. We are looking forward to the influx of members from Perth and Geraldton for the Marlin Cup in February. 28 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

Offshore World Championships Craig White and Ivan Erceg returned from Costa Rica with their heads held high and trophies to match. The excerpt below from Sport Fishing magazine is a good summary of how it happened. The Social Night on May 7th was a reel hoot with the boys in infectious high spirits. Both gave an informative commentary on how they fish over there and video of hooking up and tagging showing exceptional speed and teamwork from skipper and deckie. From Sport Fishing Magazine The Offshore World Championship recognizes the top six anglers in the competition and this year s winner was a true Cinderella story. The two-man team representing the Shimano Western Australia Open tournament in Perth, Australia, Ivan Erceg and Capt. Craig White. were there to have a good time first and whatever came their way on the water was icing on the cake. After the first two days of fishing they released four sails and sat in 45th position and couldn t be happier. However, during the final two days everything fell into place for the team, and they caught 15 sails and a blue, putting them in 4th place and earning Craig White the top angler award for releasing 12 sails and one blue. White received a beautiful King Sailfish Mount trophy, Accurate reel and Guy Harvey artwork. Sadly Ivan died following a motorcycle accident some 4 months later, but his spirit and legend live on in the club and the hearts of the many who got to know him in Quepos. IN MEMORIAM Vale Ivan Erceg It is with great sadness that Perth Game Fishing Club advises of the passing of member Ivan Erceg in a motor cycle rally accident on 25th August. Ivan was just 41 years old. Ivan joined the club in 2009 and immediately showed his talents as a game fisherman with Champion Angler and Runner-Up Champion boat in that year s Shimano WA Open Tournament. In 2011 he was part of the winning Champion Boat Team aboard Craig White s Valkoista. Going one better in 2012, his distinctive red Cabo, Xotica, was Champion Boat at Jurien Bay and Ivan was runner-up Champion Angler. The pinnacle of his game fishing exploits came earlier this year when, with his mate Whitey, they competed in the World Championship of Game Fishing in Costa Rica. He had a great time, was embraced by all other competitors and organisers and they came in equal third as a team. As a club member he was enthusiastic and competitive, loved people and a party, and was often loud but always respectful. To know him was to have been touched by his genuine warmth and human generosity. Those members who have contacted the club shortly after his passing were deeply saddened by the loss. Our club and the world have lost one terrific bloke. In remembrance of Ivan, the club will be including a memorial trophy or medal at each future tournament held at Jurien Bay. The Committee and Members extend their deepest sympathy to Hazel and their two daughters. Diverse Engineering (WA) Pty Ltd began in 1986 as a mobile, ondemand mechanical repair business. 30 FAD Program 2013 The 2013 FAD deployment was the 14th consecutive year of the modern FAD program organised by PGFC. The term modern is used, as when it began it was a multi FAD operation with equipment that was recoverable. Previous programs had launched only a couple of units at best and whilst they were large and robust, they were weighted down and generally constructed of scrap materials and were not recoverable. A reminder who our FAD sponsors are: Delayed by weather, the first shot at deploying FADs for the 2013 season was on Saturday 1st December. The crew of the Challenger Institute s Maritime Image, assisted by PGFC members launched the FADs in a seamless operation taking less than 6 hours port to port in what were less than ideal conditions. This season the FADs had a higher and more visible radar reflector and all were fitted with satellite trackers as part of the program to identify the reasons for FADs being lost. This also enabled club members to get the latest on their positions which vary according to currents and wind. The mooring line scope may result in a swing radius of up to 500 m. During the deployment it was noticed that there were a lot of birds working on the south side of Rottnest and many flying fish on clear blue water at the trench, raising hopes of an abundant game fishing season in On deployment all trackers were responding correctly, indicating their positions on a 12 hour report. The following day, December 2nd, and after reporting only twice, the HYC tracker failed to respond to cut a long story short, at the next opportunity when a club boat could check it out, it was found to be missing. The FAD had lasted little more than 24 hours. Total loss of a tracker indicates destruction either by mechanical damage or sinking. In this case the loss was attributed to a ship strike. The HYC FAD was replaced at the end of January. Throughout the season the FAD positions were monitored, with the majority of the swing being to the southern extremities of their reach due to the favourable Leeuwin current. The FADs did what they were meant to do, attracting mahi mahi, tuna, wahoo and other species for the benefit of the many club and other recreational fishers that used them. Recovery of all the FADs was effected on 22nd May, confirming that the design changes implemented for 2013 were successful, notwithstanding that ship strikes may remain our biggest concern. The FAD program is dependent on the efforts of volunteers with 4 working bees held to prepare, deploy, recover, clean and refurbish the FADs. It has been difficult to round up volunteers, but those below who have contributed are very much appreciated. Tim Armstrong, Brian Arnett, Rick Ashton, Kevin Baker, Bob Burdinat, Darren Burleigh, Tim Carson, Peter Coote, Bob Fitzhardinge (FSC), Dave Gray, Desert Gray, Mark Jarrett, Chiarinai Jatuchatsulon, Alex Kaiko, Matt Kilpatrick, Mark L Oste-Brown, Sangeeta Menon, Rob Nesbit, Andy Pearson, Dean Polain, Jono Pullin, Al Reida, Dean Rundell, Peter Salmon, Alex Scholz, Dave Thomson, John Webber, Ben Weston, Nick Wheeler, Bill Woodthorpe and Rhyss Whittred. The crew of Challenger Institute s boat Maritime Image, John Pozzi, Andrew Ings, Mick Thiele and Tony Antenucci as well as volunteer students put in their usual superb effort. 32 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

FAD Temperature Studies Summary of water temperatures at the FADs 2008 to 2013 By Alan Pearce & Mark Rossbach - Department of Fisheries informal note 6 June The following is an analysis of sea surface and sea bottom temperatures over a 5 year period recorded on Rottnest Trench FADs following the recovery of the FADs each May. Self-recording temperature loggers have been installed on one of the FADs since the summer of 2008/09, monitoring both the near-surface (~ 10 m depth) and seabed water temperatures. The recording interval was hourly, thus providing information on the daily and monthly temperatures along the outer continental shelf between November/December and April/May each year. This is proving invaluable in analysing changes in the summer ocean temperatures from year to year and also the variability between the surface and seabed temperatures, complementing the longerterm nearshore temperature logging programme. 4 of the 5 years, the exception being the appreciably lower temperatures in 2009/10. As a result, the surfacebottom temperature difference was highest at 6 to 7 C in 2009/10 compared with 3 to ~5 C in the other years. By April, the bottom temperatures in all 5 years were rising (a consequence of the arrival of the Leeuwin Current?) so the water temperature was almost constant between the surface and the seabed. It is hoped this monitoring programme can continue into at least the near future to broaden our understanding of the temperature variability along the outer shelf where we have very few measurements. We gratefully acknowledge Peter Coote and the Perth Game Fishing Club for their assistance with this project. Surface water temperatures out at the FADs generally varied between 21 and 23 C over the summer and early autumn period February to May as the Leeuwin Current was strengthening and bringing more warm tropical surface water southwards (Figure 1 overleaf). Unfortunately, the surface temperature logger covering the extreme heat wave event of February/ March 2011 was not recovered, but both the following summers were much warmer than normal. Superimposed on these monthly changes were surface temperature variations of 1 to 2 C every few days and even overnight on occasion. By comparison, the temperature variability near the seabed was enormous, with fluctuations of up to 5 C every few days (Figure 1). These were almost certainly related to variations in the thermocline depth at the edge of the continental shelf, and were probably caused by sporadic upwelling-like events causing rises and falls in the ocean thermocline. The monthly-averaged temperatures (Figure 2) showed the inter-annual (between years) variations more clearly. While the surface temperatures during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 summers were similar, the summers of 2011/2012 and 2012/13 were about a degree warmer, matching information from other data sources. At the seabed, however, the temperature was between 18 and 19 C between January and March in 34 PERTH GAME FISHING CLUB - STRIKE 2014

Ashram Rebuild Barry Wiseman Traditionally an ashram is a Hindu term for a spiritual hermitage. A place to find solace, tranquility and learning; a place close to nature.and what better than out there somewhere on the ocean. For fishing guru Rhyss Whittred, who also happens to be a long-serving president of the Perth Game Fishing Club, naming his boat Ashram not only made sense because of his love for the sea, but it also represents the initials of his name, his partner Sangeeta, son Cameron and their dogs Hakeem and Mustafa. Ashram is a 2008 Wellcraft 270 Coastal, a blue water fishing vessel imported from the United States. Rhyss purchased it locally from the owner who wasn t using it here in Perth as much as he would have liked. Ashram s fit out included a major re-think up front. An active and very enthusiastic member of the PGFC for the past 21 years, Rhyss has always skippered other members boats, winning them many club team awards. Plus he has numerous personal awards for scoring the highest points during a fishing season. He has served on the club committee for 19 years and in recent times was awarded Life Membership for services rendered. Rhyss recently retired as President, vowing it to be his last term. Time will tell. While the Wellcraft 270 Hard Top was already well equipped with tackle drawers, rod holders, livebait well, and live-aboard luxuries such as sleeping for six, complete galley with microwave, stove and fridge, other game fishing hardware needed to be installed. Outriggers would fit easily to the extensive heavy duty aluminium pipe work supporting the hard top. The major focus for Rhyss was at the helm. The skipper s main job during a tournament is to locate the fish. The team s success is only as good as the person at the wheel. Nature will provide some clues as to where the fish are, such as a change in the appearance of the water surface, floating seaweed, passing flotsam and jetsam, or a tell-tale flock of birds on the hunt. A good skipper will know how to use the bank of navigation instruments in front of him. Never before has so much information been available to improve and enhance a skipper and crew s boating experience and their safety at sea. Some might argue Rhyss is one of those fishers who seems to be able to talk to the fish. Seldom does he not come home without adding to the Club points ladder or a feed for the table. But one thing is for sure, he knows how to interpret the navigation instruments on the dash. For those members who don t know, Rhyss is Electronics Sales Manager Western Region - for Taylor Marine at Henderson, a company that provides Furuno electronics to about 70 percent of Western Australia s commercial marine sector, from the oil and gas industry to fishing. Sea rescue group and Water Police vessels are all fitted with specialised Furuno equipment. Taylor Marine technician Simon Gie and Rhyss during the Club s recent Open Day at RPYC Fremantle Annex. (Picture: Barry Wiseman) Ashram, a labour of love for PGFC Life Member Rhyss Whittred. (Picture: Rhyss Whittred) Re-built console to accommodate the latest Furuno electronics. (Picture: Barry Wiseman) 37

Ashram was not only in a position to be fitted with the latest in advanced navigational equipment depending on the size of Rhyss wallet, but here was the opportunity to customise a working game fishing (and family) vessel with Furuno and other complementary brand electronics that Taylor Marine could use as a show boat. Customers would be able to see in situ what they might have been considering for their own craft. Excitement in the project was very catching and it wasn t long before fellow Taylor Marine colleagues, technicians Simon Gie, Jason Barrett and Russell King got involved. Word spread among a number of Taylor s suppliers, with MaxSea 2D/3D Plot computer based navigation coming onboard along with Icom, Fusion Sound, Hella Australia, Reelax the outrigger people, and All Marine Services where partner Sangeeta works. Rhyss knew what he wanted but making it fit was another challenge. The original helm was not big enough. Enter Ben Punch from Fibrelite Boats at O Connor. Ben is a qualified shipwright and not only builds his own range of fibreglass boats but he is an expert at re-fits and customisation in timber or glass. He suggested re-modeling the overhead console in the hard top in front of the skipper s seat. Big enough to accommodate flush mounted instruments including a 12-inch Furuno FCV-1150 LCD sounder, a GPS coordinate screen and autopilot. Then the team looked at the helm console. That was required to take a Furuno 9 NavNet TimeZero Touch screen with multi-functional display, plus a 12 screen for the MaxSea marine software system. This large monitor also allows for great flexibility to run cameras and view DVDs when relaxing of an evening. Integrating and networking all these gadgets was left to Simon, Jason and Russell. Ben solved the cable problem from the upper console by installing a heavy duty stainless steel support between the top and bottom sections: Big enough to carry thick radar cables, CAN bus, wiring for the two 3 kw transducers, plus power and radio cables. It s also very handy to hang on to while climbing out through the opening in the windscreen to get to the foredeck. A serious sound system has been installed and Kevin Betty from Hella Marine suggested LED low power lighting for night operation, including underwater units fitted to the hull to attract fresh baitfish. Ashram made her public debut at a recent PGFC Open Day at the Fremantle Annex and attracted much attention. While the project has cost Rhyss and Sangeeta a pretty penny, now the weather is improving and a new fishing season about to start Ashram is guaranteed a good workout. Be sure to watch the points ladder back at the club house. Furuno s NAVnet TZ touch technology on the left and the 12 MaxSea computer system on the right. IN MEMORIAM Vale Ivan Quartermaine On 7th July, the club lost its longest standing and oldest life member when Ivan Quartermaine passed away at the age of 96. An enthusiastic fisherman who aside from joining PGFC in 1964 and being the club s president in was one of the founding members of the Nor-West Game Fishing Club, later to be honoured with NWGFC life membership. They ventured to Rosemary Island in the early 60 s and built the first shack on the island. In those days Dampier and Karratha did not exist, there were no GPS, markers or even reliable charts and these waters were truly pioneered by the likes of Ivan. To this day his WA record of 15.2 kg for yellowfin tuna on 3 kg caught at Bernier Island stands. During the Second World War Ivan spent much of his time as a POW in Kuching, and was advised after returning that it would affect his life expectancy, hence he took early retirement from his role as a partner in accounting firm Stowe & Stowe giving him time to enjoy his fishing past time. Ivan s health prevented him from joining in the recognition of 25 year plus members at the club s 2012 Annual Presentation Dinner, however shortly thereafter President Rhyss Whittred caught up with him at his home and presented him with the white gold pin. Ivan had strong views on killing fish to weigh. He turned his fishing ethic towards catch and release and pioneered this style for future club members. Ivan s efforts in this area saw the introduction of the Ivan Quartermaine perpetual trophy for The angler with the highest number of fish tagged in local waters which is still presented annually by the club. This important legacy will continue. Ivan leaves 3 daughters, Susan, Jennifer and Jane to whom we extend our deepest sympathies. The club is hopeful of borrowing some of the rods that Ivan made to display at a future social night, among them is a fully rollered 3 kg outfit.
