Snapper Comp Last Wednesday s (2 nd August) Social Night was well attended with a presentation from Shikari Charters owner and skipper Al Bevan, giving a comprehensive talk on metro snapper fishing. Most came away from it realising that Al has probably forgotten more about snapper fishing than they ll ever know. The well structured talk covered finding the fish, timing, tackle, bait, jigs and technique and a look at the type of rigs and hooks he normally uses. Ash Hicks and Dylan Picken with a pair of beautiful snapper. Saturday morning turned up fair weather and seven boats turned out to try their luck. It was great to see boats taking out junior and female anglers, fortunately plenty of fish, alas mostly non- scoring. Rikki Kohn picked up a great salmon on 3kg off Port Kennedy to add to her Club Championship points. Dale Moir s Outsider did well for the crew of Dale, Ash Hicks and Dylan Picken. All got into fish on both morning sessions and the evening session with a tally of six point scoring fish, all on 4kg, taking out Champion Boat and Champion Male Angler for Dale with two captures and one tag. His first under GFAA rules. Brad Russell s Oceanic had a good weekend. Andy Pearson s version of the weekend was We had a nice weekend out there - good fun. Brad's daughter Nicky wasn't in the competition but out-fished us old farts pretty solidly on day one, bless her. 8 th August 2017 Page 1

2 A lot of skippy and four dhuies caught on the side, and Brad "released" a slippery, cracker 50-55cm King George whiting when he found out they're hard to juggle with. We had a lot of pinkies too - mostly small though, but I was lucky enough to get the only one at line class, 4.28kg on 4. Dave Littlejohn thought he'd nailed one as well, only to experience a touch of samson-shaped disappointment, while Brad had a nice one at 5kg plus, but on 6kg so unfortunately no points for fillets. Hayden O Keefeon hos boat At Ease caught a couple of fish one of which made the 4 kg line class, but didn t make it to the weighstation and hence missed out on runner-up champion angler. It will still make it to the frypan. Thanks to all crews that participated, as it is this support that keeps these events alive. Watch this space for the next pop-up competition featuring heavy tackle action. Hard to tell whether Dale Moir is grimacing from the weight of the fish, or the cold. Special General Meeting A Special General Meeting is to be held concurrent with the October Social Night to formalise the appointment of a new Auditor. This will take only a few minutes and won t cut into socializing time. All eligible members have been advised by . 5 Wandering FAD The All Marine Services FAD that went adrift on 28 th December is still chugging along although once again caught up in an area where the currents appear circular. It still has 59% of battery charge remaining. Membership Extended membership benefit New members joining between 1st June and 30th September, the club s year end date, will get up to three months free membership, Expiry date of new memberships during that period will be 30th September th August 2017 Page 5

6 Commonwealth Marine Reserves On July 21 st, The Minister for the Environment and Energy, Mr Josh Frydenberg, released the proposed revised boundary and classification changes affecting Commonwealth waters. This is hopefully the end point of deliberations and negotiations that have been ongoing for many years. The draft plans and counter the lockout scenarios proposed by Tony Burke as Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities in the previous Labor government. The most recent threat to lock recreational fishers from much of the Commonwealth waters came in the recommendations of the Commonwealth Marine Reserves Review conducted over the period of late 2015 through to early See Figure 1. HISTORICAL PLAN - ROTTNEST TRENCH The Game Fishing Association of Australia has been fighting for access to these lockout areas prior to and during this period and is pleased with the recommendations of Parks Australia as they have been presented. This is our best chance ever for getting these changes made albeit that we still have a ways to go with management plans. The effects on PGFC members is relatively simple. The original plan was to zone a swath of deep water from just beyond the Rottnest FADs and create a marine reserve inaccessible to recreational fishing on the basis of protecting blue whales. Through the direct efforts of many including ARFF, GFAA and PGFC life members Peter Coote and John Webber, Recfishwest and others, the Commonwealth has proposed to move the reserve to one of the southern arms of the trench, in an area not entirely out of range, but one in which we don t fish. PROPOSED PLAN ROTTNEST TRENCH - July 2017 There remains a major threat to the marine parks legislation which emanates from well-funded environmental groups lobbying hard to have these plans reversed in the misguided ideal of expanding marine protected areas. Members are strongly urged to make submissions in support of the proposed management plans and forward them to Parks Australia using the following link. s of support to cross bench senators would also be encouraged, as the possibility of defeat in the senate is a real one. The GFAA Media Release on the next page spells out GFAA s position.
