Snapper comp coming up on 18 th and 19 th. Some good gear for sale and a clarification of procedures to follow when claiming a record. Fishing Local Apart from what we ve learnt from the various newsletters floating around, there has been little of interest in local waters in the past month. Conditions in recent weeks have not been conducive to wetting a line. Many members have got away from the cold and taken their fishing activities north. Seems like most weekends Mark Jamieson gets up to Jurien. Last Saturday they fished the 4m swells and as usual did very well, bagging out by noon. Rhys Martin (5) scored well with a 5.5kg dhufish, the first he d caught by himself. As usual all the adults landed good fish. Leon Murdoch s yellow tail and Beau Collinson s yellowfin tuna were caught on the trawl around a big bait school on a previous trip. 6 th August 2018 Page 1

2 Exmouth School holidays lured the Oosthuizen family from their chilly Perth home for some fishing and snorkelling. Between them, the kids caught four small black marlin along with a swag of good table fish. A memorable part was snorkelling with the gentle whale sharks. 6 th August 2018 Page 2

3 Exmouth (some more) Intrepid fisho member Dylan Picken and partner Kate, spent nearly 3 weeks away fishing and camping along the Ningaloo coast during July. Fishing was exceptionally slow (Picko s always has great expectations), but they ended the trip nicely getting stuck into some nice fish including squid, rankin cod, coronation trout, spangled and red throat emperors, Spanish mackerel, yellowfin tuna, dolphin fish, sailfish and marlin. Highlights included Kate's 7.5kg mahi mahi on the new Richter Lures Soft Grassy colours which were won at the Shimano WA Open, Kate getting a 9.5kg yellowfin tuna on a Nomad 140 DTX minnow and Dylan s first sailfish estimated at 25kg. The pair raised a total of 5 sailfish and 3 marlin, tagging one of each. One of the sails hooked took a Richter Jelly Babe that was on a 2kg outfit. 6 th August 2018 Page 3

4 Kimberley Members Greg Baker and Peter Coote have just enjoyed a 12 day trip down the Kimerley coast from Wyndham to Cygnet Bay with four others, chartering fellow member Jim Stevenson s boat, Kimberley Pearl. With the emphasis on fishing, there were a lot of hours everyday targetting barramundi, trevally, queenfish, mackerel, mangove jack and fingermark bream to name a few. Legal size barramundi were elusive, but several made it to the baking dish. All the fishing was on light tackle, although there were moments when some heavier gear may have been appropriate. Anything that was not kept for the table was released in good condition. One of the highlights was the setting of crab nets in the mangroves alongside the Mitchel River, yielding close to four dozen muddies in under two hours. It allowed selection of the biggest 20 to be retained. Later in the trip the visit to Montgomery reef on the falling tide allowed trolling along the edges of the runout gully where fat trevally waited to ambush small species being washed from the reef. Renamed trevally alley, the action was thick and fast. Plenty of sight seeing and visits to historic sites were included and broke up the steaming and fishing routine. Included were numerous creek beds with croc-free swimming holes above waterfalls, the site of the wrecked DC-3 and Careening Bay where Captain Phillip Parker King dried ou his 17m ship Mermaid for repairs in The boat s library includes a number of very informative volumes. Late July turned on perfect weather with little or no wind and cloudless skies, it was mild at night and warm during the day. The crew of four were fantastic, the knowledge of the area coming from years of experience. The boat was equally good with the six guests accommodated in individual en-suited cabins. The food was outstanding in selection quallity and preparation. The trip ended at Cygnet Bay (near Cape Leveque), where a Sealegs dinghy transferred the passengers to the beach. Then it was onwards to the airstrip and from there in a Cessna Caravan sweeping down the beautiful Dampier Peninsula coast to Broome. The team that chartered Kimberley Pearl on this trip highly recommends the Kimberley Pearl to those wanting to enjoy a coastal cruise at a leisurely pace, or those who would enjoy the fishing challenges. 6 th August 2018 Page 4
