1 Fishing round-up. Fisheries analysis of FAD temperature sensors. Working Bee. FLIR night Fishing Metro Members have generally kept off the water in the past few weeks despite some great fishing weather and warm waters continuing offshore. Aside from the newspaper story of the large marlin washing up around Albany, there have ben some photos of a black marlin repoerted as 1 kg being caught off Mandurah. Mahi mahi are still around offshore even though there are no FADs out there for protection. Small tuna and even some spanish mackerel are still to be found around Rottnest. For the non-game fishers there are relatively easy pickings off Mindarie for dhufish and baldchin groper. Last Sunday s City Beach Builders competition was a wipeout due to weather. Jurien Bay Criag White reports that Jurien is still firing with plenty of mahi mahi on FADs with an average size of 4 kg and a few small wahoo lurking. Skipjack tuna to 8 kg are widespread with yellowfin in 50 m to kg+. Yellowtail kings to 25 kg, loads of sambos and amberjacks around the wrecks and Spanish mackerel are hitting jigs in 100 m. On the bottom there are good pink snapper to 10 kg and a few good mulloway between 10 and kg. Pigeon pair of mahi mahi taken on live slimy mackerel from Jurien Bay FADs on Friday June 21st aboard Craig White s Valkoista 25 th June 13 Might be a good time to pack up the boat for a weekend at Jurien. Exmouth Josh Bruynzeel sent in this report at the weekend. Winter has finally arrived in Exmouth with colder mornings having us dusting off our spray jackets for the cool starts. The water temp has stabilised at a chilly 25 offshore (cold for Exmouth!) and the Spaniards have responded in full force with double digit hook-ups not uncommon within a few hours of trolling. 25 th June 13 Hook-Up Page 1

2 Black marlin and sailfish have still dominated On Strike II captures with even the odd blue marlin appearing in our spread on a fairly regular basis once a week. A 500 lb fish woke us right up before lines out last week by eating a garfish rigged for juvenile black marlin. We fought the big blue for just over an hour on kg spin gear before grabbing the leader and releasing her. Our new vessel On Strike II (a 40ft O Brien) was in full pursuit of this fish for the whole time and she is a pleasure to back down on a hard fighting fish in any conditions. Yellowfin tuna have been a regular by-catch along with some great wahoo. Check out our facebook page by searching for On Strike Charters and add us as a friend to get regular updates from your game destination in the north. Mention that you are a PGFC member for a 10% discount for any bookings in 13. Catchya soon Captain Josh Bruynzeel June Social Night The club had the pleasure of hosting Peter DeIsio from FLIR Australia in Melbourne on the evening of June 11 th for a very informative presentation on FLIR fixed and hand held infra-red cameras. Peter explained how the breadth of applications has paralleled that of GPS plotters and the economies of scale have brought down the production costs and hence prices. With a camera set up looking down the marina fairway and a very dark (and cold) night, the imagery was as good as daylight in that every detail could Peter Coote (L) and Peter Deiseo with hand held IR cameras be seen clearly from the rigging on yacht masts to the faces of wavelets. Similarly the camera facing from the northern clubhouse door towards the bar gave highly contrasting images as people moved around the room. See the monitor image above showing 3 people at the bar. The compact hand held units as shown in the image proved to be very interesting to those who fish at night and are wary of cray pot floats or in whatever application have occasion to move their boats in the dark. Note there will not be a social night in July 25 th June 13 Hook-Up Page 2

4 FADs The following is an analysis of sea surface and sea bottom temperatures over a 5 year period recorded on Rottnest Trench FADs following th erecovery of the FADs in May. Summary of water temperatures at the FADs 08 to 13 Alan Pearce & Mark Rossbach Department of Fisheries informal note 6 June 13 Self-recording temperature loggers have been installed on one of the FADs since the summer of 08/09, monitoring both the near-surface (~ 10 m depth) and seabed water temperatures. The recording interval was hourly, thus providing information on the daily and monthly temperatures along the outer continental shelf between November/December and April/May each year. This is proving invaluable in analysing changes in the summer ocean temperatures from year to year and also the variability between the surface and seabed temperatures, complementing the longer-term nearshore temperature logging programme. Surface water temperatures out at the FADs generally varied between 21 and 23 C over the summer and early autumn period February to May as the Leeuwin Current was strengthening and bringing more warm tropical surface water southwards (Figure 1). Unfortunately, the surface temperature logger covering the extreme "heat wave" event of February/March 11 was not recovered, but both the following summers were much warmer than normal. Super-imposed on these monthly changes were surface temperature variations of 1 to 2 C every few days and even overnight on occasion. By comparison, the temperature variability near the seabed was enormous, with fluctuations of up to 5 C every few days (Figure 1). These were almost certainly related to variations in the thermocline depth at the edge of the continental shelf, and were probably caused by sporadic upwelling-like events causing rises and falls in the ocean thermocline. The monthly-averaged temperatures (Figure 2) showed the inter-annual (between years) variations more clearly. While the surface temperatures during the 08/09 and 09/10 summers were similar, the summers of 11/12 and 12/13 were about a degree warmer, matching information from other data sources. At the seabed, however, the temperature was between 18 and 19 C between January and March in 4 of the 5 years, the exception being the appreciably lower temperatures in 09/10. As a result, the surface-bottom temperature difference was highest at 6 to 7 C in 09/10 compared with 3 to ~5 C in the other years. By April, the bottom temperatures in all 5 years were rising (a consequence of the "arrival" of the Leeuwin Current?) so the water temperature was almost constant between the surface and the seabed. It is hoped this monitoring programme can continue into at least the near future to broaden our understanding of the temperature variability along the outer shelf where we have very few measurements. We gratefully acknowledge Peter Coote and the Perth Game Fishing Club for their assistance with this project. Clips For any members who missed the Channel 10 Video Clip on the return of Craig White and Ivan Erceg from Quepos Costa Rica, it can be viewed at Bluewater Tackle is moving from their shop at Melville to new premises on 30 th June. 7 Movement Popular member Hesham El-Brollosy and his family are taking off for Dubai in early July for a 2 year assignment which will have Hesh travelling widely through the Middle East and Africa. He has promised to keep us all posted on where the best fishing spots are and has already suggested Dubai where sailfish and big mahi are common. Salalah in southern Oman which is known for 60 kg+ GTs is another favourite. Hesh expects to remain in contact with the group at PGFC and hopefully his trips to Perth each year will coincide with social nights or competitions. Hesh s son Zeyad picked up an Australian Small Fry 3 kg record for the mahi mahi pictured right caught during the Shimano WA Open. Good luck Hesh and keep us posted on the fishing possibilities in your new neighbourhood.
