Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club Page 4 Small Boats / Big Boats Challenge Wow- we were not expecting that!!!! the competition seemed to be in decline then WHAM 41 boats joined up and it felt like the good old days. The weather was very, very good, it was holiday time and everything seemed to come together for once, we even had 11 big boats take part to pick up the gauntlet and give the small boats a run for their money in the small boat / big boat challenge. First day s fishing produced 7 stripeys with 4 tagged & released and 3 weighed, the heaviest was 130.2kg caught on 37kg line by Kory Parlane on Koomra (small boat). There was also a blue marlin weighed in by Denis Kendall on Nereus (big boat) at 201.6kg on 24kg line. Mahimahi and spearfish have been in evidence this season, with 3 mahimahi weighed in, the heaviest at 7.34kg to Mark Helms on Blue Hustler (small boat). Hayden Johnstone on Mad Oz (small boat) caught a spearfish of 15.4kg on 10kg line and we had 3 tag & release shark. Baily McIntyre on grandad s launch Senator (big boat) hooked in to a kingi of 10.72kg using 10kg line and Reel a Peel s Chris Mowat landed a snapper of 3.26kg. The first day must have been a warmup as we had heaps of fish on the 2 nd day, of the smaller kind though. There were 3 stripeys, 2 landed and 1 T&R with the heaviest caught by Wayne Kirtlan aboard Nevada (small boat) weighing 108.4kg. Five mahimahi came in with the biggest for Lisa Chadderton on Mistress (big) at 8.02kg, 3 kingis with the heaviest of 6.18kg going to Karlene Moses on Mina. No yellowfin were caught so the tuna section had plenty of skippies weighed in with the heaviest at 5.88kg for Sam Spence on Taniwha (big). Of the 6 snapper weighed in, Leo Scott on Noble Princess caught the heaviest fish of 4.1kg. At the end of the contest small and big boats earned prizes for their 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd placings in the prize list. On the whole, small boats got more marlin, a big boat got the only tuna, small boats got more kingis and snapper but after adding up the points, big boats won for the very first time, with 640 points to the 560 points earned by small boats. A big thankyou to our main sponsor Warren Hay of Warren Hay Marine in Whangarei, Team Daiwa, and to Fusion Leisure who supplied a deflector stone guard for trailer boats which was won by Jack Grooby on 'Christina' in a lucky draw. (PS It was Jack s stag party)

One Base Origins Back in the season of Keith Johnston was club president, and during that season a new club contest was formed which took place in conjunction with the Nationals. Here is an excerpt from Keith s President s Report in the yearbook: For the first time we ran our own contest in conjunction with the National.. this was so successful that the committee have made tentative plans to run an International One Base Contest from Whangaroa just before next year s National. Jan Harvey has been active and has lined up some sponsors so things look bright for next February. That first pre-one Base contest was called the Whangaroa Contest and was held 19 th to 24 th February 1977, running concurrently with the Nationals. There was an award for each of the 6 days for the heaviest fish, and the winner overall was the boat with the highest total weight of fish, which was Waiataiti, skippered by Pat Vincent, with a total of kg. Pat became club president for the season and the first One Base. The very first One Base in 1978 was held just before the Nationals and was a great success. Here is an excerpt from the yearbook and the President s Report (Pat Vincent): Our first One Base Contest was held prior to the National in February. It was a tremendous success. The weather was fine, the fish were there and the other Clubs supported us well, with 45 boats landing 24 Marlin and 6 Shark. The winner was Amorino skippered by Tony Hopper, but several boats were within striking distance right to the end. The prize-giving at Kingfish Lodge was enjoyed by all and was a fitting finale to the first One Base, and definitely not our last. I must thank my committee for the effort they put in to making it the success it was. There were two criticisms but I am sure next year s committee will rectify these points. The two main complaints were some people could not catch a fish, and the other was from anglers who had caught a fish. There were no clubrooms to go to and boast about their catches. The first complaint still carries on to this day of course from time to time, but the 2nd complaint was rectified in that and the following season by the granting of building permission for the present day club rooms, and the huge effort made by many people to build and fit out your club at Whangaroa. The first One Base s prize list consisted of the billfish, shark and yellowtail/tuna sections that we still have today, and an inter-club trophy the Rhodes Waiataiti Trophy, which was presented by Pat and his wife, Rhodes being the surname of the barge owners. In that first contest the trophy was won by Mercury Bay. In the billfish section, there was the Coruba Trophy which was presented by Allied Liquor Merchants and won that first year by Amorino from Mercury Bay. The shark section trophy was as it is today, the Marlin Hotel trophy, presented by the proprietors of the day Bill Manser and Bruce Harwood. That first year it was won by Waimarie from Whangaroa. Surprisingly the Whangaroa Gamefish Trophy for the yellowtail / tuna section was not awarded as there were no fish caught! Pat Vincent was right about the One Base; 40 years later it is still a high-light of the club s contest calendar. One Base 1992
40 th Annual One Base 40 years of One Bases and we hunted through the archives and made a slide show of some of the best and most notable pictures from the 40 years. We have a big mention here for Logan Campbell, skipper of Violator who we hear, has been in 39 of the contests and with the same crew! The pictures through the years were very interesting showing the changes in and around the club. A lot of our sponsors have been with the One Base for many years; Kilwell Sports in particular, and also Advance Trident Ltd, whom to their great dismay could not sponsor day 5 this year. Lion Red Breweries have also been with us for many a year. This year we had 52 boats and 189 anglers, a far cry from the heyday of the contest when we could have over 600 anglers competing and the need for a marquee and water taxi! The weather started off reasonably, got a bit snotty in the middle, and started to fine up towards the end of the contest again. It was not a big billfish fest this year, but everyone went away happy. Day 1 was Kilwell day and 8 stripeys were caught, with 3 T&R and 5 weighed. The best of the day was caught by Trevor Danks on Marcus II at 139kg, and 2 nd heaviest was caught by Dave Chambers from KC (normally a kingfish boat) at 134.2kg. There are no sharks weighed in the contest now, but we had 6 mako tagged and released. Kelvin Mowat on his boat Reel a Peel landed a good snapper of 6.6kg and a good albacore at 11.48kg was brought in by Soscha Ten Cate on Mac 2. Day 2 was also Kilwell day and there were 4 stripeys, with one being landed by Graham Fray on Red Kite, weighing in at 110.4kg. There were also 11 tagged shark, mainly mako but a couple of threshers too. Cam Rathe aboard Warkworth boat Brenda L landed a mahimahi of 5.4kg on light tackle 4kg line! Day 3 was sponsored by Lion Red, Warren Hay Marine and Icey-Tek and as the weather had turned to custard there was a lot of harbour entrance fishing and some good kingfish action! We had 9 kingfish that day with the best weighing in at 13.86kg caught by Jamie Sanderson on Shandi. We did still have a marlin landed that day, with Bruce Bennett on Santana landing a stripey of 108.8kg. There were 2 sharks tagged and released, a mako and a bronze-whaler, and a decent snapper of 4.1kg was caught by Justin Molloy from Carnival. Day 4 was the 3 rd Kilwell day and the sea had settled enough for more boats to venture further afield. There were 4 stripeys with just an under-weight one landed, which will be very tasty when back from the smoker! There were quite a few sharks tagged; 2 hammerhead, a mako, a blue and a bronze-whaler. There were some good snapper on the weigh-station with John Gaffar on Chalk and Cheese landing a beaut at 9.74kg. Jamie Sanderson got one at 7.58kg and Cam on Brenda L got one at 7.42kg. Long-time participant of the One Base; Peter Matheson on Violator landed a good albacore of 11.6kg. There was still plenty of kingfish action with 12 fish altogether, many of them tagged but the heaviest for the day was caught by Dave Chambers on KC with a good fish of 15.54kg. Day 5 was sponsored by Warren Hay Marine for the first time and as the sea conditions had improved more, more boats went trolling again and we had some billfish, even blue bob decided to get in on the act! We had 2 blues; one for Roy Bergquist, skipper of charter boat Albacora at 183.3kg and one for Jason Wech aboard Centrefold at 175.4kg. There were 6 stripeys, 4 of them weighed with Andrew Wylie from Christina weighing in the day s heaviest at 111.5kg. Four mako were tagged and released and Blair Scott on Noble Princess brought in an albacore of 10.86kg.
Time for the final results Marlin Section: 1st Albacora, 2nd Centrefold, 3rd Blackbeard Shark Section: 1st Santana, 2nd Khan, 3rd KC Tuna / Kingfish Section: 1st KC, 2nd Shandi, 3rd Moody Blue Snooks & Lola Fuller Trophy Roy Bergquist on Albacora Kilwell Classic Trophy (heaviest striped marlin) the very first fish to be weighed was unbeaten; Trevor Danks on Marcus II with his fish of 139kg, which also won fellow crew member David Adams the substantial amount of loot from the Calcutta auction. And the hotly contested Waiataiti Trophy the room erupted with cheers as we cruelly announced that Whangaroa had beaten Warkworth by one point, but Whangaroa didn t win it; Waikato did, due to the efforts of the one Waikato boat; Blackbeard (law of averages!). Many, many thanks go to our sponsors without whom this contest is not possible: Kilwell Sports, Lion Red, Icey-Tek, Warren Hay Marine and Garmin, Dave Franks for the glass marlin auctioned off for funds for the tuna mount, Burnsco, Hansens, George & Joyce Hawke, Mangonui Hotel, Snooks & Lola Fuller, Marlin Hotel, John Charlesworth at Seamounts, and World Travellers - Kerikeri who provided a trip for two to Rarotonga this year. We had the 10 bottles of plonk countdown again and the winner was Steve Franich lucky man!
Sandra Moore, our Recorder and Radio Operator, spent many hours making a Power Point Presentation of old One Base photos and we played it over and over on the big screen on One Base nights. This presentation has proved so popular that we are making a DVD of it. The DVD will be available for $10. us at: wsfc@xtra.co.nz if you would like a copy. The Kamo Club fishing guys are getting quite cocky about this tournament. They have booked out the Whangaroa Motel and say that they are coming in force to take the trophy back home. We had better get our Whangaroa team together and plan some strategy meetings etc. How about we leave some notes in a motel room - stuff like where the fish are (but they aren t) marked on maps etc. Any ideas? Hope none of them read this newsletter..
