Tips o Ocea Salmo Fishig Releasig Fish - Hadle With Care Selective fisheries allow the retetio of adipose fi-clipped coho salmo while requirig the release of o-clipped fish. These types of fisheries allow greater access to hatchery-reared coho salmo while miimizig impacts to wild fish. It is very importat to miimize hook-ad-release mortality by followig these guidelies wheever releasig fish: 1. Idetify the species of the fish as soo as possible, ad for coho whether or ot it has a adipose fi-clip. 2. Avoid usig a ladig et if the fish is to be released. The fish will have a better chace of survival if it is ot etted or removed from the water. If you must use a et, use a cotto or o-abrasive et. 3. If you must hadle the fish, avoid touchig the gills. 4. Whe removig the hook, use oe of several types of tools for removig the hook (log eedle-ose pliers, a dowel with a cup hook at the ed, or ay of the commercial hook-removig devices available). 5. If the fish is hooked deep, cut the lie as close to the hook as possible. Chiook Fishig Methods To help preserve chiook fishig opportuities outside the coho seaso, it is importat for aglers to miimize coho hook-ups. The followig are suggestios to help icrease chiook catches while avoidig coho: 1. From March through Jue, use larger lures or baits to avoid coho. Durig this time period, coho are still fairly small, ad prefer prey items smaller tha 5 iches. 2. Whe fishig i offshore areas, make sure the lure or bait is fished deep (i.e., greater tha 80 feet dow). As a geeral rule, coho ted to be i the top feet of the water colum, ad chiook usually are more abudat much deeper ( feet). I order to get to that depth use oe of the followig techiques: a. For trollig, use a dowrigger with at least 150 feet of cable, ad a weight of at least 7 lbs., or b. Use a diver that is rated to dive at least 100 feet. You ca also icrease the depth your diver will work by usig a kevlar based fishig lie, or c. Use a siker release with lead weights of 12 to 32 oz., ad a kevlar-based fishig lie. d. Whe usig a flasher/dodger while trollig with either a diver or a siker release, use oly the smaller sizes to reduce drag. 3. Troll slowly for chiook. Coho are more likely to strike a faster movig lure tha chiook, ad goig slower also makes it easier to get deeper. 4. If you are fishig ear-shore areas where the depth is less tha 60 feet, troll without a flasher usig large bait (6-8 ich herrig or sardies) ad fish ear the bottom. 9

Measurig Salmo ad Halibut Legth Legth: The legal legth of ay fish (except halibut ad salmo i the ocea) is the shortest distace betwee the tip of the tail ad the tip of the sout with the mouth closed, measured while the fish is lyig o its side o a flat surface with its tail i a ormal positio (see sketch at right). For salmo i the ocea the tail may be faed i order to exted the legth (see sketch at right). The legth of a halibut is measured i a straight lie from the tip of the lower jaw with the mouth closed to the extreme ed of the middle of the tail (see sketch at right). Selective Salmo Fisheries Selective fisheries allow aglers the opportuity to harvest marked hatchery fish while releasig umarked wild fish. Most Orego salmo fisheries that permit coho harvest allow aglers to keep oly those coho that have a healed adipose fi-clip. The adipose fi is the small fleshy fi located behid the dorsal fi. The success of these fisheries depeds greatly o aglers complyig with the regulatios ad makig their best effort to hadle released fish with care (See page 9 for tips o releasig salmo.) 10

14 Commo Questios About Ocea Fishig Q What should I carry whe fishig i the ocea? A Here are a few must-have items (besides your fishig licese ad tag): Marie VHF radio. Cell phoes are NOT depedable i the marie eviromet. VHF radios provide better coverage, are weather resistat, ca be located by sigal source, ad are moitored by others who may be able to led assistace i a emergecy. Flares: Make sure they are fresh (check the expiratio date), ad uderstad how to use them. Navigatio equipmet: GPS ad other mappig electroics, if you kow how to use them, ca help you avigate home if iclemet weather strikes. Charts: Study them ad avoid dager areas. Q Where do most people get i trouble whe ocea fishig? A Most accidets occur o the bar that poit where the river meets the ocea. Avoid crossig the bar o a ebb-tide it is very ustable ad upredictable. At times, eve o a calm day, breakers may form across much of the bar quickly ad without otice. Always wear a life jacket whe crossig the bar. Q How do I best esure my survival i case of a accidet? A Sice accidets happe without warig, always wear your life jacket. It s early impossible to put o after a accidet occurs. A good life jacket will slow the oset of hypothermia ad give you more time to be rescued. A float coat or survival suit is eve better. EPIRB (Emergecy Positio Idicatio Radio Beaco) uits will brig rescuers right to you. Also, be sure to carry ad use your VHF radio. Other boaters i your area ofte ca provide quick aid. EMERGENCIES VHF-FM Radio: Chael 16 If i distress (threateed by grave ad immiet dager): 1. Make sure radio is o. 2. Select Chael Press/hold the trasmit butto. 4. Speak slowly, ad clearly say: MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY! 5. Give the followig iformatio: Vessel ame ad/or descriptio, Nature of emergecy, Positio ad/or locatio, ad Number of people aboard. 6. Release the trasmit butto. 7. Wait for 10 secods. If o respose, repeat Mayday call. More iformatio at: If ot i immediate dager, follow the same steps as above, except do ot use the word MAYDAY. Make sure everybody is wearig a life jacket! Telephoe: 911 Tell the operator you have a marie emergecy. Be ready to provide the same iformatio required i item umber 5 of the mayday call. Boatig Safety Tips o Check weather, tide ad bar coditios. o File a Float Pla with frieds/relatives. o Do t overload your boat. o Wear your life jacket. o Carry flares ad a VHF-FM radio. o Stay well clear of commercial vessels. o Check weather ad tides before departig. o Have achor with adequate lie. o Boat safe, boat sober

Coastal Boatig Safety Iformatio Boat operators who are experieced, well prepared ad cautious will fid Orego s coastal waters a boutiful, excitig place to fish. Here is iformatio to help you ejoy a great year of fishig safely. Crossig the Bar Most accidets ad deaths that occur o coastal bars are from capsizig. Boats are more likely to capsize whe crossig Note: Orego estuary maps ad hazard iformatio are available at the bar from the ocea because the seas are o the ster ad the boater may have less cotrol over the vessel. Boaters must make sure the bar is safe prior to crossig. Check with other boaters or the Coast Guard to fid out the coditio of the bar. If you are caught o a rough bar ruig i: Make sure everyoe aboard is wearig a persoal flotatio device. Keep the boat square before the seas. Keep the boat o the back of the swell. Ride the swell ad stay clear of the followig wave. Avoid sudde weight shifts from passegers or gear movig aroud i the boat. If possible, have passegers lie dow as ear the ceterlie of the boat as possible. Do ot allow the waves to catch your boat o the side (beam). This coditio is called broachig, ad ca easily result i capsizig. 15

Rough Bar Advisory Sigs Be aware of the locatio ad status of rough bar advisory sigs. These sigs are 6 x6 white, diamod shaped daymarks, with the words ROUGH BAR i black letters. Two alteratig amber lights o the sigs are activated whe observed seas o the bar exceed 4 feet i height ad are cosidered dagerous. odo NOT CROSS THE BAR WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE FLASHING!o If the lights are ot flashig, there is o guaratee that sea coditios are favorable. Coastal bars may be closed to recreatioal boats whe coditios o the bar create a hazardous coditio. I some river systems the closure area also may apply to areas iside the bar. Cotact the local Coast Guard Statio for more iformatio. Failure to comply with the closure may result i voyage termiatio, ad civil ad/or crimial pealties. Tides Tidal currets may gai tremedous velocity, particularly whe the ebb (outflowig) curret is augmeted by river ruoff. It is extremely dagerous to get caught o the bar durig a strog ebb curret. Eve o days that are relatively calm, a fast-movig ebb ca create bar coditios that are too rough for small craft. Always kow the stage of the tide! Avoid gettig caught o the bar durig a ebb tide. It is ormally best to cross the bar durig slack water or o a flood tide, whe the seas ormally are calmest. 16
