2 Interesting and historical courserelated facts Spyglass Hill Golf Course takes its name from Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, Treasure Island, published in Local legend maintains that Stevenson once wandered the Spyglass area gathering ideas for his novels. A unique aspect of this course is that the holes are named after characters in Treasure Island. Hole names such as, "Black Dog" and "Billy Bones" are hints for the unwary. As players attempt to master this difficult course, they may hear the laughter of pirates in the distance. Spyglass Hill was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., as part of the master plan for the Pebble Beach ocean front. S.F.B. Morse, founder of Pebble Beach Company, and chairman of the board of Del Monte Properties, envisioned a string of golf courses around Del Monte Forest's shoreline. Morse commissioned Jones to design a course between Cypress Point and Pebble Beach. After six years of planning, Spyglass Hill opened March 11, The design features two dinstinctly different kinds of terrain that influence the way the holes look and play. The first five holes roll through sandy seaside dunes, challenging the golfer to carefully pick the safest path. The following 13 holes are cut through majestic pines with elevated greens and strategically placed bunkers and lakes to grab the errant shot. The PGA Tour consistently lists Spyglass Hill's holes 6, 8, and 16 among the toughest on the tour, and during the 1999 United States Amateur, the stroke average of the field during medal play was in excess of 79. 4 the president of MPCC s Board of Directors ( ). The Dunes Course was originally designed by Charles B. MacDonald and Seth Raynor in The Dunes Course was redesigned and rebuilt in 1998 by Rees Jones. The Dunes fairways are parkland style, and the course is a 6,762 yard, par 72. The Shore Course was originally designed by Robert Baldock and Jack Neville. Construction began in 1960, and the course was opened for play in Reconstruction of the Shore Course began in February 2003, and the new course was opened in June Golf course architect Mike Strantz created a links-type golf course on the club s ocean-side property. The Shore has 6,914 yards and is also a par 72. The Crosby Pro-Am was played on MPCC s Dunes Course for 18 consecutive years beginning in 1947, and then shifted to the Shore Course in 1965 and In 1967, the tournament was moved to Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The ACSP is an education and certification program that helps golf courses protect our environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. With its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and Del Monte Forest, Pebble Beach closely monitors its chemical use. Pebble Beach Co. participates in a range of recycling programs and Dalhamer's staff uses electric maintenance equipment. The golf course uses reverse osmosis to produce water for irrigation. Wildlife on the course Height of Cut Greens Poa annua 0.110" Rough ryegrass Deer; Fox; Gopher; Hawk; Otter; Rabbit; Raccoon; Several different species of birds; Squirrel Interesting and historical courserelated facts Pebble Beach Golf Links was designed by golf course architects Jack Neville and Douglas Grant in 1919, redesigned by Ed Conner and Jack Nicklaus in 1991, and Nicklaus redesigned the par-3 No. 5, located along the Pacific coastline on a 50-foot cliff, at a cost of $3 million in The No. 1 ranked public golf course in America by Golf Digest, Pebble Beach hugs the rugged coastline, providing wide-open vistas, cliff-side fairways and sloping greens. The wind, which is frequently a 2" presence at Pebble Beach, is always the determining factor on how the course plays. In preparation for the 2010 U.S. Open, oceanside fairways on holes No. 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 were moved closer to the cliffs. Some of the green approaches were widened, and the fairways on holes No. 11 and 14 were reshaped to bring the bunkers more into play. Three bunkers were added to the right side of No. 3 fairway and four more were added to the left side of No. 15 fairway. A large fairway bunker along the left side of No. 6 fairway was replaced with five smaller bunkers to narrow the landing area.
