The Lincoln native and NU graduate has a background of success at all levels in the game of golf and the Huskers continue to make progress under his direction. Spangler is a natural fit to guide the Husker golf program. He followed a strong junior career in the state with a standout collegiate career and a distinguished record in the national amateur ranks. Long regarded as one of the state s top amateur players, Spangler served as an assistant coach with the Husker women s golf program for seven seasons. He took the reins as men s head coach in June of, replacing Larry Romjue, who retired after seasons as the Nebraska men s coach. In his first eight seasons as head coach, Spangler has focused on building a strong program in the Big Conference. A key part of Spangler s building process has been keeping Nebraska s top junior players in state and building around them. Once players are in the program, Spangler incorporates a coaching philosophy that encourages his golfers to focus on their strengths, while helping them refine and improve their mental approach to the game. The confidence and commitment Spangler has injected into the Nebraska program allowed NU to record back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 6 and 7. In the 8- season, Spangler built for the future with his young Husker squad. Although the Huskers finished th at the Big Championship for a second straight season, NU got positive performances throughout the season from its underclassmen. Junior Brandon Crick became the fourth golfer in Spangler s eight seasons at NU to win an individual title, and sophomore Mike Coatman posted a team-best 74.5 stroke average. Six of the top seven stroke averages were posted by underclassmen, and 85 percent of the rounds played in 8- were by underclassmen. The Huskers third-place finish at the Troy Invitational also marked the best team finish at that time under Spangler since March 7. Dedicated to developing each player on and off the course, Spangler saw three of his golfers earn academic All-Big honors Nebraska (85) in 8-. Trent Price was a first-team selection, making him the third back-to-back first-team honoree in school history. In his career, Spangler s golfers have earned a total of 7 academic all-conference honors, as Chris Bruening and Andrew Wyatt were also second-team selections in 8-. Spangler s first season in proved to be a confidence builder for the program. The Huskers recorded six top- team finishes, including a first-place showing at the Branson Creek Invitational, the program s first tournament title in three years. Jim Troy also captured an individual crown at Kansas State s Wildcat Invitational, helping the Huskers to a second-place finish. In Spangler s second year, the Huskers continued to make progress. Nebraska featured a mix of experience and youth, and Spangler s leadership kept the Huskers on track. NU finished in the top six in seven tournaments in -, including five times during its spring slate. Three seniors were relied on through much of his second season, while Spangler also oversaw the emergence of freshman Judd Cornell. Spangler s third Husker team made steady improvements from the fall slate to the spring schedule. Nebraska finished second or higher in three consecutive tournaments in the spring, including a victory at the Pepsi-Cola Invitational. The Huskers spring success came despite a roster that included just two seniors and no juniors. In his fourth year, Spangler guided the Huskers to a seasonopening home tournament victory at the Fairway Club Invitational, and the team went on to snag three more top- victories in the fall. In the spring, the squad tallied four more top-five spots as well as the second tournament victory of the year at the Branson Creek Invitational. The Huskers opened the 5-6 season by winning their own Fairway Club Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club. Spangler s team used the momentum of that victory to record three top-five finishes in the fall and put itself in position for an NCAA Regional berth. Nebraska continued its success into the spring season, where the Huskers placed in the top five four times, including a first-place finish at the Branson

In addition to his 87 U.S. Amateur appearance, Spangler also played in the country s most prestigious amateur event in 86, narrowly missing the cut for match play. Overall, Spangler has participated in eight USGA tournaments, and is also a twotime Lincoln Men s City Champion, and was the runner-up in the TransMississippi Amateur in 85. Spangler again played strong at the 8 Nebraska State Match Play Championship at ArborLinks in Nebraska City, years after his Nebraska Match Play title. Spangler made a run to the final eight of the 64-man field, before bowing out to Husker senior and eventual champion, Brandon Crick. At the Nebraska Amateur Championship the following month, Spangler played well enough through four rounds to earn a top-5 finish. Spangler graduated from Nebraska in 85 with a bachelor s degree in business administration. He is married to the former Alesia Dodson and they have two daughters, Cameron,, and Elsa, 5. program reach those same heights. During his seven seasons as an assistant to Nebraska women s coach Robin Krapfl, the Huskers reached NCAA Regionals five times, including an appearance in the NCAA Championship. Spangler also experienced success in collegiate golf as a player. He was a member of the Arizona State golf team from 8 to 8, then transferred to Nebraska to play for Romjue. Spangler s Husker career was highlighted by an individual and team victory at the 84 Kansas Invitational, and he lettered for Nebraska in both 84 and 85. In addition to his collegiate accomplishments, Spangler racked up an impressive amateur golf resume starting as a junior player and continuing to the present. He captured his first state championship in 7, winning the Nebraska Junior Amateur at Beatrice Country Club. Spangler captured the Nebraska State Match Play Championship in 87 at Lochland Country Club in Hastings, the same year he qualified for the matchplay portion of the competition at the U.S. Amateur. His outstanding season in 87 earned Spangler the first of his two Nebraska Amateur Player-ofthe-Year awards. Spangler was the runner-up in the Nebraska Amateur Championship and represented the state in the U.S. Mid-Amateur that fall. His play earned him a second Nebraska Amateur-of-the-Year Award Dick Spangler Golf Scholarship The Dick Spangler Golf Scholarship Award is presented at the end of each golf season to a sophomore or junior golfer who has made significant contributions to the men s golf program through his attitude, effort and team spirit. Sophomore Brett Sundberg received the award for the 8- season. The recipient is selected by the men s golf coach. Dick Spangler was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 7. He passed away on Saturday, Nov. 8,, in Lincoln. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and sons and daughters-in-law Rich and Marga, Russ and Gail, and Bill and Alesia. Together, Dick and Bill have been a part of Nebraska golf for a total of nearly years. Bill Spangler is in his ninth season as Nebraska s men s golf coach, after serving as an assistant for the women s team at Nebraska for seven seasons prior to being named head coach of the men s team. Like his father, Bill was a golfer for Nebraska (84-85), while earning his bachelor s degree in business administration. Head Coach Bill Spangler Dick Spangler earned three letters for the Nebraska golf team from 5 to 5, was a Nebraska Amateur champion and served on the board of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association. NU went on to make its first NCAA Regional appearance since and finished nd at the Central Regional. In 6-7, Spangler s squad finished second three times while recording seven top-five finishes for the second consecutive season. The Huskers again finished sixth at the Big Championship and came in st at the NCAA Central Regional. Perhaps the best golfer in Spangler s short tenure, capped a terrific career with an outstanding senior season in 6-7. Schnell captured the Ron Moore Invitational title, while recording eight top- finishes and four top-five showings. Schnell finished third at the Big Championship to become the first golfer under Spangler to earn All-Big accolades. In 7-8, freshmen Wyatt and Coatman led NU to an th-place finish at the Big Championship. Wyatt s 75. stroke average was the best freshman mark posted in years, and Coatman competed in every round for Spangler. 3 Tony Bedient Assistant Coach - First Season Teaching Highlights Worked with seven Top teachers in the world over the last four years Lead instructor for ESPN golf schools for three years Head instructor for ESPN at Centennial Golf Club in Carmel, N.Y. Tony Bedient has joined the University of Nebraska men s golf coaching staff and is excited to help the program get to the next level. Originally from York, Neb., Bedient has been traveling the country and teaching for ESPN Golf Schools under the direction of Hank Haney (Tiger Woods swing coach) and many other great instructors. Since 5, Bedient has been learning from some of the best instructors in the world. In November 5, he was personally trained on the golf swing by Haney. I had the opportunity of watching Hank teach students for three straight days in a golf school, Bedient said. I had read all of his books on the golf swing, and I found out watching him teach was a great way to shed light on all he talked about in his books. Bedient also had the opportunity of attending a Hank Haney Teach the Teacher seminar at one of Haney s facilities in Dallas, Texas. At Teach the Teacher, Haney spent time in the classroom going over his swing theories and what is most important in the golf swing. In 6, Bedient was named a lead instructor shortly after he became a full-time golf instructor for ESPN. Bedient not only had the opportunity of working with some of the best instructors in the world, but also had the opportunity of leading golf schools for ESPN in states around the country. Over the course of a three-year period, Bedient taught 4, students for ESPN Golf Schools alone. Seeing that many students was one of the greatest opportunities that I have had in my teaching career, Bedient said. When working with that many students, it forces you to diagnose and fix the main problem in the golf swing. One of Bedient s many strengths as a teacher is his open-minded approach to learning new things about all aspects of the game. In 8, Bedient joined the staff of Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) and became a certified golf instructor. Bedient has since received a level two TPI instructor certification. Bedient s involvement with TPI opens up a new door for players coming to Nebraska to not only improve their game, but also improve their fitness just like players on the PGA tour. One of the things that I want all recruits to know when coming to the University of Nebraska is that I can guarantee that if they come here with an open mind and a great work ethic, they will be prepared to take their game to the highest level if that is their goal. 4 - MEDIA AND RECRUITING GUIDE Tom Osborne Athletic Director - Third Year The Osborne File Nebraska (65) Ph.D. in educational psychology Nebraska (6) M.A. in educational psychology Hastings College (5) B.A. in history Football Coaching Ledger Tied Pct Lost 4 Won 55 Year Totals exceeding any in its rich history. The Cornhuskers mounted a record under Osborne, good for a winning percentage of.86. The 55 victories are sixth-most all-time among major college football coaches while the winning percentage ranks fifth all-time. His achievements were so highly regarded that the National Football Foundation waived its three-year waiting period so that he could be inducted into its Hall of Fame in December of 8. He is one of only four coaches in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived. Osborne s coaching career came to a poetic end in the 8 Orange Bowl. In his final game, the Huskers defeated No. Tennessee, 4-7, giving him a share of a third national title in his final four seasons. The victory left Osborne as the first coach in college football history to retire as a reigning national champion, along with the nation s best active winning percentage. Osborne guided the Huskers to back-to-back titles in 4 and 5, then capped his career by sharing the 7 title with Michigan. Under Osborne, NU became just the second school all time and the first since Oklahoma in to post back-toback perfect national championship seasons. Osborne s last five Nebraska teams put together the best five-year run in collegiate football history with an amazing 6- record, including five consecutive -win seasons. Osborne - coached Nebraska teams captured conference crowns, including six of his last seven seasons on the sideline. All 5 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl, while 5 won -or-more games. In the classroom, the Husker football program totaled 65 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in Osborne s 5 years. To put Osborne s dedication to developing complete student-athletes in perspective, he accumulated more football Academic All-Americans in his 5 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history. Prior to becoming head coach, Osborne spent five seasons under Devaney, helping the Huskers win backto-back national championships in 7 and 7. In 7, Osborne succeeded Devaney, who also served as Nebraska s Athletic Director from 67 to. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, have three adult children, Mike, Ann and Suzanne and four grandchildren. Education Nebraska s 4th all-time national championship in, while the volleyball squad won another Big title and advanced to the NCAA semifinals. Across the board, Husker programs have started an upward trend in the Big and national standings the past two years and head into - riding a wave of success. In the classroom, Husker studentathletes found stellar academic success in 8-, the first full year with Osborne at the helm. Nebraska had six academic All-Americans, bringing its nation-leading total to 7, while also setting a conference record with 7 academic All-Big selections across all sports. Since retiring from football in 7, Osborne has found several ways to stay active in his home state. His most visible post-coaching foray came in the political arena, as he served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from Nebraska s rd congressional district from to 6. He also made a gubernatorial bid in 6 before turning to academia. A native of Hastings, Neb., Osborne served as a senior lecturer at Nebraska in the College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics, in the fall of 7. Osborne also worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments for two years. I ve spent the majority of my life working with the athletic department at the university and I want to do what I can at this point to continue in the pursuit of excellence that has been previously established, Osborne said. Osborne has also poured time and effort into building a unique mentoring program within the state. The TeamMates program, founded by Tom and his wife, Nancy, in, provides support and encouragement to school-aged youth with the goal of seeing children graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education. Osborne still actively provides leadership in the college football ranks despite being away from the sideline for a decade. He is currently a voter on the coaches poll for the Master Coaches Poll. While he may hold a key position that molds the future of Nebraska Athletics, many will always remember Osborne for his legendary service to the program as a football coach. Osborne was named Nebraska s 5th head coach following the 7 season and worked the sideline for 5 years. Under Osborne s direction, the program achieved remarkable success, Nebraska Athletic Director (7-present) Congressman, Third District (-6) Nebraska Head Football Coach (7-7) Nebraska Assistant Head Coach (7) Nebraska Assistant Football Coach (67-7) Nebraska Part-Time Football Coach (64-66) Nebraska Graduate Assistant (6-6) A Hall of Fame football coach returned to his roots on Oct. 6, 7, to become the th athletic director at the University of Nebraska. Tom Osborne accepted the position at the time because, Osborne said, Harvey Perlman asked me. Perlman, UNL s chancellor, asked Osborne to lead the program where he had served so productively as head football coach. Two months later, on Dec., 7, he announced that the word interim had been removed from Osborne s title. In June, he announced that Osborne would remain in the athletic director position for the foreseeable future. Tom originally agreed to come in temporarily and get the department moving in the right direction. He clearly accomplished that. I believe he now feels comfortable serving on an ongoing basis and I certainly feel comfortable having him do so, Perlman said. Osborne has repeatedly stated his preference to head the athletic department until two of his biggest projects the Life Skills Center and a new basketball practice facility are fully funded and the buildings are completed. Holder of master s and doctorate degrees from the University of Nebraska in educational psychology, Osborne said he probably would not have considered coaching if he had not met Bob Devaney, who convinced him to become a volunteer graduate assistant on his staff. Bob epitomized the value of loyalty, and I will always be grateful for the confidence he showed in me, Osborne said. Because of his leadership and empowerment as a coach and an athletic director, I was fortunate to serve 5 years as head coach. Devaney put Osborne in charge of the offense that won two national titles and allowed him to concentrate on three areas he thought were important a strong academic program for student-athletes, a strength and conditioning program and a more formalized program to attract walk-on players. Each area has grown into an important asset for all Nebraska sports programs, which Osborne now oversees. Within months of his appointment, Osborne quietly reestablished an athletic department mission based on five core values integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and loyalty. Under Osborne s leadership, the Husker bowling team brought home Hastings (5) 7
