Ogilvy s victory at last year s Accenture Match Play Championship over Paul Casey was his second at this event and his third World Golf Championships win. Ogilvy, who won the 2006 Accenture Match Play Championship and the 2008 CA Championship, is the only player other than Tiger Woods to win three World Golf Championships events. Ogilvy s 89.4 winning percentage (17-2 record) at the Accenture Match Play Championship is the best current active winning percentage of any player. Ogilvy has reached the championship match in three of the four years that he has played in the event. Ogilvy and his wife Juli welcomed their third child into the world last week. Harvey Jack Ogilvy was born on February 11 at 9 pounds, 7 ounces and inches long.
More on Ogilvy in Player Spotlight section below Only match play event on the PGA TOUR The Accenture Match Play Championship brings the top 64 players (64 of the top 66 in 2010) in the world together for the first World Golf Championships event of the 2010 season. Players go head-tohead in this unique format adding drama to every match and every hole. Suddenly players are faced with winning or losing putts every day instead of just one or two during the course of a tournament. The first day of the event, Wednesday, February 17, features 32 matches and makes up one of the most exciting days of the year in golf. Golf s Global Summit A total of 43 players hail from outside of the United States, representing 18 foreign countries. The 19 total countries represented equals the most in tournament history (2006, 2009). Outside of the United States (21), England leads the way with nine players in the field, followed by South Africa with five and Sweden with four. The other countries represented are: Australia (3); Denmark (3); Spain (3); Canada (2); Italy (2); Japan (2); Northern Ireland (2); and one player each from Argentina, Colombia, Fiji, Germany, India, Ireland, Korea and Thailand. The average age of the players in the field for this year s Accenture Match Play Championship is years, the youngest average age in the history of the World Golf Championship-Accenture Match Play Championship. There are 23 players under the age of 30, the most ever in tournament history (2009 had 20). Fisher, Ross 29 Molinari, Edoardo 29 Scott, Adam 29 Wilson, Oliver 29 Villegas, Camilo 28 Watney, Nick 28 Mahan, Hunter 27 McGowan, Ross 27 Molinari, Francesco 27 Moore, Ryan 27 Noren, Alexander 27 O'Hair, Sean 27 Quiros, Alvaro 27 Na, Kevin 26 Johnson, Dustin 25 Kaymer, Martin 25 Schwartzel, Charl 25 Sim, Michael 25 Ikeda, Yuta 24 Kim, Anthony 24 Wood, Chris 22 McIlroy, Rory 20 Ishikawa, Ryo 18 Course changes Since last year s event, Jack Nicklaus Design collaborated with Design Services of the PGA TOUR to alter the contours on nearly every green (No. 6 was the only one that wasn t touched) to provide additional hole locations, more receptive contours, and a higher greenspeed. Under the supervision of Golf Course Superintendent Jay Ervine, who worked closely with TOUR Agronomy, the extraordinary amount of work was accomplished in a short period in order to provide ample time for the turf to re-grow and form a very good, uniform putting surface.
Quick Facts: o The greenspeed should be as much as 11. o The fairways will be mowed at slightly less than ½. o The rough will be 2 to 3, depending on temperatures and general growing conditions in the next few weeks. Changes to Tees: o Addition of a tee box on No. 5, 50 yards forward of tournament tee o Addition of a tee box on No. 11, 50 yards forward of tournament tee Changes to Bunkers: o Removal of two fairway bunkers and wash re-routed (Moved closer to the tee) on No. 4 o Removal of two fairway bunkers and addition of one bunker on No. 9 o Reduction in size of fairway bunker on right side of No. 11 Quotes from defending champion Geoff Ogilvy at the tournament s media day There were a couple of slopes that were a bit extreme, I think, for the speed that we're used to, and I think that's just been softened a bit, so we're going to be able to get the speeds that a course like this deserves. The grass is perfect, and you want to be able to have like pin positions, not just have to stick them just on flats, because you want a bit of slope because that makes golf interesting, and I think this is just going to create what (course designer) Jack (Nicklaus) had envisioned. I think ironically if you take a couple of slopes away, it ll probably get harder because they can up the green speed a little bit and they can probably tuck a few pins behind some of the slopes that were perhaps a bit too extreme last year. It will probably play similar to last year but more interesting, because there will be a few different pin positions and putting will be -- if the greens are a bit faster and they're a year more developed, it will just be -- short game will be a bit more valuable. I think interesting is the right word because the pins are going to be in spots that they maybe wanted to go to last year but they were a bit afraid. No. 15 par 4, 343 yards The 15 th hole plays as short as 300 yards depending on the tees, and matches often arrive at the hole during a pivotal moment in competition. With a drivable par 4 at such a crucial position of the course, players are faced with the decision of going for the green or laying up, bringing everything from eagle to double bogey into play. PLAYER SPOTLIGHTS: Steve Stricker - USA Steve Stricker is just the fourth player to start the tournament as the No. 1 seed. Stricker moved ahead of Phil Mickelson to No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking with his victory at the Northern Trust Open. The other three players are Tiger Woods (99, 00, 02-04, 06-09), Ernie Els (2001) and Vijay Singh (2005). The eight-time PGA TOUR winner won the Accenture Match Play Championship in 2001 as the No. 55 seed when it was held in Australia, defeating Padraig Harrington, Scott Verplank, Justin Leonard, Nick O Hern, Toru Taniguchi and Pierre Fulke on his way to victory. Stricker is coming off the best season of his career, having captured three PGA TOUR events (Crowne Plaza Invitational, John Deere Classic, Deutsche Bank Championship); he is one of just nine players since 2000 to win three or more times in a season (Woods, Singh, Els, Love, Perry, Weir, Mickelson, Toms). Stricker is the No. 1 seed in the Bobby Jones Bracket and will face England s Ross McGowan in the first round. McGowan is currently ranked No. 66 in the Official World Golf Ranking and is making his first-ever appearance at the Accenture Match Play Championship.
Martin Kaymer - Germany Earlier this year on the European Tour, Martin Kaymer outlasted Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy to win his fifth European Tour event at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. Kaymer s victory moved the young German to No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking, the highest ranking of his career. Kaymer, who missed two months of last season following a go-karting accident in which he broke a bone in his foot, is now the second-highest ranked European behind Lee Westwood of England, who is ranked No. 4. Kaymer made his debut on U.S. soil at the 2008 Accenture Match Play Championship, losing to Boo Weekley in the opening round. Martin Kaymer is the No. 1 seed in the Ben Hogan Bracket and will face Chad Campbell (USA) in the first round. Kaymer has never advanced past the second round (2009 T17; 2008 T33) at the Accenture Match Play Championship. Campbell, currently No. 65 in the world, is making his first Accenture Match Play Championship appearance since 2007, when he finished fourth. Campbell s other three appearances have netted him three additional top-10 finishes (T5 2006; T ). Lee Westwood England Lee Westwood, the highest-ranked European in the Official World Golf Ranking at No. 4, is the top seed in the Gary Player Bracket. He is making his 10 th start at the Accenture Match Play Championship and hopes to improve upon a less-than-stellar record at the event, where he has never advanced past the second round (T17 in 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2009; T33 in 1999, 2004, 2006, 2007). Westwood will meet fellow Englishman Chris Wood in the first round. Wood is making his first start at the Accenture Match Play Championship. After missing the cut in his first European Tour start of the year, Westwood has finished T3 and 2 at The Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and Dubai Desert Classic, respectively. He is the 2009 Race to Dubai winner. Jim Furyk USA Jim Furyk is the No. 1 seed in the Sam Snead Bracket and will face fellow American Scott Verplank in the first round. Furyk is making his 10 th start at the Accenture Match Play Championship; he has advanced to the third round four times, including last year where he was knocked out by England s Ross Fisher, giving him four T9 finishes at the event. Furyk, who is currently ranked No. 5 in the world, has not won an official PGA TOUR event since the 2007 Canadian Open; however, he did win the 2009 Chevron World Challenge in December. He has never won a World Golf Championships event (2 nd 2001 Bridgestone Invitational; 3 rd 2009 CA Championships and 2006 Bridgestone Invitational). Edoardo and Francesco Molinari - Italy Italian brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari are the first brothers to qualify for a World Golf Championships event. The brothers recently made history at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup, when they became the first brothers to team up and win the event with a victory over Northern Ireland s Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell and Sweden s Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson. Edoardo won the European Tour s Challenge Tour Rankings with three victories and has moved to No. 45 in the world thanks to a T4 at the Dubai Desert Classic. Franceso, who is currently No. 46 in the world, finished the 2009 European Tour season with seven top-10 finishes. He finished T10 at the 2009 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. Neither has played in the Accenture Match Play Championship before. They are in the same bracket the Sam Snead Division so there is a chance the brothers could face off if they both advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. In the first round, Edoardo faces Stewart Cink and Francesco faces Zach Johnson. Rory McIlroy Northern Ireland McIlroy just missed out on becoming the youngest player to win the Harry Vardon Trophy since Seve Ballesteros in 1976 when he finished second behind Lee Westwood in the inaugural Race to Dubai, having led going into the final event of the 2009 season. His consolation was to become only the second 20-year-old to break into the World s top 10, after Sergio Garcia. McIlroy is currently ranked No. 8 in the world.
Last year, in his first Accenture Match Play Championship appearance, McIlroy advanced to the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by eventual champion Geoff Ogilvy, 2 and 1, and finished T5. On Wednesday, McIlroy will face Kevin Na, who is making his first Accenture Match Play Championship start, in the Ben Hogan Bracket. Stewart Cink The 2009 British Open Champion has reached the final day of the Accenture Match Play Championship in each of the past two years. With an record at this event, Cink lost in the championship match to Tiger Woods in 2008 and beat Ross Fisher in the consolation match after losing to Ogilvy in the semi-finals last year. Cink is currently ranked No. 21 in the world. He faces Edoardo Molinari in round one.
