1 WEYMOUTH GOLF CLUB MINUTES OF GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING Tuesday 13th June 2017 HELD AT WEYMOUTH GOLF CLUB Those Present: Alan Bates - Captain Russ Conway - Vice Captain Lennie Harris - Seniors Captain Caroline Tapster - Ladies' Captain Pat Crane - Chairman of House Graham Vile - Chairman of Competitions Frank Martin - Chairman of Greens Des Lochrie - Professional Nicola Adams - Assistant Secretary 1. APOLOGIES 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING The minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday 2 nd Proposed by: Seconded by: Russ Conway Frank Martin 3. MATTERS ARISING 4. CAPTAIN S REPORT Alan Bates From the reports by the various societies and individuals Weymouth Golf Club is doing very well and our reputation is growing within the country. Well done to all greens and house staff for their hard work in making the golf club the success it is. The Hardy A team were knocked out of the cup at Bulberry Woods, however after two wins out of two matches they sit on top of the league. Family Day was a great success and well attended my thanks to all those volunteers for their help on the day. Finally on behalf of Weymouth Golf Club I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Tony Lown who sadly passed away this week. Tony was a well-liked and well respected former member of Weymouth Golf Club he will be sadly missed by all his many friends from within the club. His funeral is next Monday at 10: VICE CAPTAIN S REPORT Russ Conway Practice Area Enhancements Rob Bayliss has ordered the materials required to build/ up-grade the practice area and putting green. The intention is to complete the project by the end of February 2018.
The DGU and the Golf Shelters: I have been informed by the President of the DGU that Weymouth and Ferndown Forest Golf Clubs have been awarded the 2 practice shelters, free of charge. DGU have asked that the Dorset Golf teams have use of the shelters, when booked through the office. I await contact details of the manager at Two Rivers Meet Golf Centre to arrange the removal and delivery of the shelter to WGC. Fire Alarm System Renewal The work on the fire system is complete. I will complete the Fire Log in the next week and handover the responsibility to The President in his Health and Safety role. CASC The 2 nd CASC Sub Committee Meeting has been held. 2 main workstreams are underway: 1. Analysis of the Catering data, supplied with great effort from John and Nicola in the office. 2. Shadowing of the kitchen Staff, led by Dave Clark We will report to the Board in July SENIORS CAPTAIN S REPORT Lennie Harris Having completed two major competitions already in the seniors diary, we are now getting prepared for our Whisky Scramble on 20 th June 2017, which is the big event of the year, although the number of teams are down this year it is still a good field of 46 teams. We believe the reduction is down to the fact the event has been brought forward in the year which has coincided with other clubs major events, this will be something we will have to look at next year. A big thank you to Caroline Tapster and her team for providing ball spotters on the 5 th and 8 th holes and providing a halfway house on the 10 th tee. We wish her well for her big day on the 19 th June Open Champagne Scramble. The seniors teams are now well into their matches, latest results as follows: Team 1 lost to Cricket St Thomas 6 0 Team 2 lost to Rushmore Park 4 2 Team 2 lost to Bulbury Woods Team 1 won against Cricket St Thomas 6 0 Team 3 drew against Sherborne 3 3 Team 3 drew against Long Sutton 3 3 The winner of the June Stableford was Jay Everett with 37 points All teams have stated that they have had a really good day in their corresponding matches. The senior section would like to thank Pat Crane and his team for sorting out the shower problem and carrying out the refurbishments in the gents locker rooms. The Senior Captain presented the Winter League to the winners of the Weymouth team lead by Alan Roberts and Pete Harper. 7. LADY CAPTAIN S REPORT Caroline Tapster Our golfing season is in full swing and it is starting to get very busy!!
The Coronation Foursomes was won by Caroline Tapster and Dilys Grant who will progress to the Area Final at Bath in August; The Wessex Cup was won by Helen Strachen, and the Golf Foundation Brooch by Val Parsons. Weymouth ladies had some good results in the County Seniors at Lyme Regis, Libby Legg is the new County Senior Champion, Carol Freeman and Di Loving were 7 th and 8 th respectively and there were five Weymouth ladies in the top 15. The Beales team have started well with wins against Rushmore and the Isle of Purbeck We had a very successful coffee morning and are looking forwards to our Open Champagne Scramble on 19 th June; we have 24 teams entered which is one of the largest entries for several years. Thanks in advance to the seniors for their help in ball spotting; we will reciprocate the following day for the Whisky Scramble and are also providing a half-way house. Finally thanks to Pat and his team for painting the on course toilets!! Proposal for half way house On behalf of the ladies section I would like to propose that a permanent half way house is included in the club`s development plan. I understand that this has been discussed before and some rough costings have been looked at to include water and electricity, possibly located at the back of the 9 th green. The ladies section is doing well with their fundraising this year and would be able to contribute c 500. The seniors section have been approached and have expressed concerns about possible vandalism, although this could be mitigated by the type of materials used and security measures. Graham has already mentioned in his report that there is at least one member who would be willing to make a financial donation in return for a memorial plaque and there may be others willing to do this or to contribute towards the cost of equipment. To begin with the half-way house would be run by volunteers for specific events but there would be scope for more commercial activity at a later date. This year the gazebo has already been up and down 4 times with more to come, it is getting a bit worn, is not suitable for wet and windy weather, and is not a good use of green staff time. A permanent half way house would benefit members and would be an asset to the club in the future, I would welcome the committee`s support and advice on how to take this forward CHAIRMAN OF COMPETITIONS REPORT OCTOBER Graham Vile 1. Competitions during. Date Competition No of Entries 2017 No of Entries 2016 Var +/- Wed 3 rd Sat 6 th Medal Tankard Sun Sat 7 th 13 th Tankard Beets/Hambro Fri 29 th Stableford
4 Sat 20 th Captains Charity Scramble Sat 27th Jubilee Cup & Jack Roberts Trophy It s good to be able to report for the first time in three years that numbers in all of the competitions played in were slightly up on last year. 2. I can now confirm that all Club Competitions, Seniors and Ladies fixtures have now been placed on the BRS Tee booking system for I asked that both the Seniors fixture secretary and the Ladies Vice-Captain check to ensure they are happy with what has been booked on the system. 3. I have been asked by some members how long it takes for monies won in a competition to be placed onto their gold card. Perhaps we can agree a specific timescale? Nicola replied that the usual time scale is one to two weeks depending on the work priorities of the Office 4. Pink Day The date of this event has been changed to Saturday 7 th October. This has been done partly to try and get everyone once again involved after some difficulties a few years ago. I did speak to young Robbie about the date and he was quite happy with the change. I have with Nikki s support sent letters to a variety of companies and individuals to gain sponsorship and support for both the auction and raffle. If any member of the Board/Committee is in a position to help Nikki and I would be pleased to hear from you. 5. Club Invitation Day As in recent years the interest and support for this event from our members is very poor. At the time of writing we have only 12 pairs, no ladies...is it time to call last orders on this competition? 6. We did try to arrange a super 6 competition over 8 holes on Thursday evenings but the event was poorly supported. It s our intention to arrange a monthly 8 hole competition on a Friday, perhaps this will appeal to a wider range of members? 7. Roll Up Groups I have ed the nominated person for each group confirming the decision made at our last meeting that they will retain their status for another 12 months.
8. Memorial Half Way House I have been approached by a member who is willing to make a financial donation towards a permanent halfway house on the course. The only thing asked for is a memorial plaque displaying the names of those members no longer with us whose family or friends have made a donation. Perhaps the Club could offer to pledge 50% of whatever members donate? This will enable us to construct a quality and lasting facility that will benefit members for many years. The committee s views on how we might progress this would be appreciated I have written a notice inviting members to contact us if they are interested in becoming a Course Marshall. This has been sent out on , and copies placed in both changing rooms and the main notice board. 9. CHAIRMAN OF GREEN REPORT Frank Martin A fairly major leak occurred on the irrigation system behind the 11 th tee and of course true to Murphy s Law it had to go wrong late on a Friday just as the greens were drying out. The break was on a large bore pipe that feeds the ring main over the road and could not be isolated at all; therefore a temporary bodge was immediate priority. The offending item was a saddle joint which just happens to be an unusual part that nobody keeps in stock, so we had to wait quite a while for the new one to arrive. When it did eventually arrive it was duly fitted and so we straight away got the system fully up and running again. So of course that s when it started raining. Typical! Path behind the 11th tee has been repaired with a tarmac patch and is back in use again. Our annual divot day had to be cancelled this year as virtually every day in the calendar was taken up with competitions. Of course we are still filling divots on the odd fairway whenever we can fit one in. Thankfully the divot trailer is still proving popular so thank you to all our conscientious members that are helping to keep the fairways up to scratch in this way. Our old fence along Cumberland Drive had deteriorated somewhat over the years and a fencing contractor has done the best he can at patching it up. Apparently the chain link is an odd size probably due to its age, which nobody stocks anymore. So it was doubly annoying to find that within a few days of its repair somebody decided to cut through the wire and break it down. Neighbours have said they saw two young lads loitering around over there and the matter has been reported to the Police. End of and the beginning of June contractors are due to be on site topping off the Leylandii hedges behind the 12 th tee and 13 th green. This is necessary work that is needed around every five years or so to prevent the hedge becoming so thin and open that it doesn t stop golf balls flying over the boundary. Steps to the 8th tee that were rotting and had the potential for an accident to happen have been repaired and made safe. Replacing the sleepers is planned in for w/c 11 th Sept. The range ball collector snapped in several places this week including the main frame which is bent and twisted to the right. Fitted an additional strengthening piece of angle iron on to the frame as there was nothing left to weld to. The middle collector is off the ground which is caused by the extra angle iron. At least one of the bushes is missing and the pivot points don't seem to have been greased in a while. A complete rebuild would take Rob B several days to carry out which is time he doesn't have available at present. Des is investigating and pricing a replacement. 10. CHAIRMAN OF HOUSE REPORT Pat Crane Not too much to report, boards have been fitted in gents toilet area.
6 Painter is starting to decorate on course toilets this week. Dave Clarke is monitoring the kitchen for a study for the ongoing CASC report. I have a quote for the heated rails in the green shed as asked for by the head green keeper. Can we move to order new carpets? A meeting will take place on Thursday 15 th June with Pat Crane, Caroline Tapster Clark, Russ Conway, Alan Bates and Asia Teperek to discuss colours. New flag has been made and is being used. 11. JUNIORS REPORT Diary Dates Poker Night Every Wednesday Quiz Night Friday 30 th June Race Night T B C 2017 Club Competitions The Junior Peach Trophy was played on 13. Unfortunately, this had to be reduced to a 16 hole competition which made it a non-qualifier. Jack Pallister won with 35 points, with Toby Trott runner up with 30 points, beating Alex Johnston on countback. The second round of the Royal British Legion Junior Knockout was played on Saturday 20 th at Bramshaw Golf Club. The 2 teams comprised Alex Johnston and Jack Kerslake, and Jacob Tidswell and Jack Pallister. Both teams performed well maintaining the lead for most of the round. Alex and Jack Kerslake won 6 up after 18 holes, and Jacob and Jack Pallister won 4 up, giving a very impressive final score of 10 up! They will now play Hayling Island in the next round in June. Dorset Schools Golf Championships: The juniors excelled in the Dorset Schools Golf Championships held at Weymouth GC, with Sam Trott, Toby Trott & Jacob Tidswell representing Budmouth winning the Team event. They will represent Dorset in the National Schools Championship at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire on the 12 th July. Alex Johnston won the overall scratch and the Under 16s Championship with a great round of 73 gross. He will represent Dorset in the National Championship at Walsall Golf Club on 24 July. Alex Johnston and Jacob Tidswell also qualified for the South West of England School Championships at The Players Club in Avon which was played on 30 th. Jacob had 2 great rounds of 70 and 75 gross, which qualifies him for the National Championships at The Kendleshire on 26 th June. Tigers Tigers are still enjoying their Saturday sessions and have played the 5 hole academy course a few times, numbers are still holding up and hopefully now the football season has finished we will add a few more to our numbers. 12. PROFESSIONAL S REPORT Des Lochrie No Written Report Des Lochrie informed the Golf Committee that the junior s fees are the most expensive in the area. Alan Bates informed the Committee that junior s fees and age categories have been discussed at the Management Board and will be an item at the next AGM.
7 13. ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION None 14. AOB & ACTIONS Russ Conway In Russ asked if Club Opens run by the Seniors and Ladies Section should pay a green fee, for visiting players. It was agreed to review this in October when Charity Week is also being reviewed. Russ informed the Committee that we have now been awarded one of the covered practice bays. ACTION: Russ with Frank and a member of the green staff to go to Christchurch and check the size. Nicola Adams ACTION: The Golf Committee agreed to cancel the Club Invitation Day. Nicola to book tee times for those who have already entered the competition and delete the remaining tee times. Des Lochrie ACTION: Des Lochrie to inform the members that the Club Invitation Day has been cancelled, members who have already entered will be able to play and a cost of 10 for their visiting partners. A Vote was taking and by 5 to 3 it was agreed a Day Book Entry Stableford will take its place, Des to arrange. Caroline Tapster Clark The Ladies Section would like a permanent halfway house and will donate towards the cost. A lady member has offered to donate as a sum as a memorial which could include a plaque on the halfway house. The Golf Committee voted agreed 8 to 0 for a halfway house on the course. ACTION: Caroline offered to take on the project of the halfway house, to communicate with members requesting donations and requesting any members wishing to help build or supply materials for the memorial halfway house. Alan Bates ACTION: Alan will take the project of the halfway house to the Management Board. Graham Vile The Club Championships are on the 8 th and 9 th July and it was requested holding a BBQ on the Sunday afternoon to encourage embers to stay. ACTION: Frank Martin to check with the green staff the fairways..
